Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
tasks?
Erika Dobson
Our main product is a music video for the track ‘Be
Somebody’ by indie rock, Cold Fire. My ancillary
tasks are print products, one firstly the digipak for
the track and secondly our advert for the digipak
album suitable for a rock based music magazine such
as NME.
2. • In the real world, all of these products would be
produced by the same record company
,marketing team to carry out the same theme
throughout them all to give uniform and coherent
identity to update and improve the already
established style for the artist.
• This means that for our products to be effective
there has to be a similar use of media language
across all of the products, involving similar
connotations and representations.
5. Ancillary Products
The aim for these were to promote the artist and product.
We had to make them realistic and convincible to an
audience and continue the theme of the music video
across the ancillary products.
To create the perfect digipak, we had to research a variety
of different digipaks of the same genre to see what was
needed. We noticed that for an alternative genre that most
digipaks did not feature the artist, similar to the magazine
advert which was designed with the same style as the
digipak.
6. Here, we carried the
polaroid theme from
our digipak, onto our
magazine
advertisement. We
featured some of the
same shots as our
digipak but also
two band shots
are involved, which
still doesn’t identify
who they are and
what they look like,
which is done within
the other products.
From our research,
we involved the
release date of the
album and where it
is available to buy
or download.
7. Media Language
• Roland Barthes, a French theorist, born in 1915,
suggested that a narrative has a five code theory that
activates the reader to make sense of it.
• Throughout all 3 products, the main theme that is
featured in them is the lighting. The lighting in our
products, is quite dull and mischievous. This connotes
the style of music, being alternative and not pop. With
this is mind, the colours we have used are also quite
dark, being browns, blues etc. also connotes a nonmainstream alternative genre.
8. Media Language
• The cropping of our music video highlights a
mysterious singer as it doesn’t identify much about the
band, only that it involves a man. This also challenges
the theory of Andrew Goodwin, as he stated a rock
music video involves a stage performance, in which
ours doesn’t.
• Facial expressions are a key feature of mise-en-scene
as it highlights the story our music video, wanting to
‘be somebody’. This is why our actors seem frustrated
and down when life opportunities are going wrong.
Following on to them being happy when they have
achieved a goal and becoming somebody.
9. Representation
• In the Music Industry the way an artist is represented to
their fans is vital to achieve commercial success.
• A fans experience may not be just the music that they
enjoy, it could be that they like the artists attitude,
ideology, fashion style, sex appeal, performance etc. In
recent years, an artists personal life can determine whether
or not a person likes their music. Also these days fans often
relate very closely to the representations of an artist which
influences them on how they perceive themselves and
others. They base their choices on a particular artist, being
how to dress, how makeup should look and their attitude.
• As our music video is more mysterious, the representation
of the artist is practically none. With this how it is, fans
may take on board the way that the characters are
portrayed, this being virginal innocent characters, wearing
none objectifying clothes to catch the eye of the male gaze.
The attitude of the characters are very eager and confident
in trying to do well in their profession, which can inspire
fans to be just like them and aim high. Their attitude is
very mature and adult like which hopefully gives a positive
vibe to the fans and they follow their steps.
10. • Some of Barthes codes relate to our print
products as the audience will recognise that it is
our band, Cold Fire, if they see an image that has
been taken from our digipak or magazine
advertisement, this relates to the semiotic code.
• The enigma code is also used across our three
products as the thing that is hidden from the
audience is our artist
• Also, the action code is used as the audience
knows something that doesn’t need explaining,
this relates to our coursework as they will be able
to identify the three different products and what
they are due to their layout etc.
