The document discusses conventions used in media products and how the student's media ancillaries develop or challenge conventions.
Some key conventions utilized include featuring the artist prominently on promotional materials like the magazine advert and digipak to draw attention to them. Outdoor natural settings are used to portray the artist positively, mirroring conventions in the genre. Consistent visual themes like a dominant color span multiple pieces to create cohesion. Including social media platforms and clear labeling of album details follows standard conventions. The ancillaries aim to effectively promote the artist and album within conventional expectations for the genre.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Magazine and digipak evaluation - evaluation question 1
1. In what ways does your
media ancillaries use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
By Ihab Saeed, Jack Melton, Toby Prichard, Tom Macklin,
2. Jack Melton
• In our magazine advert we used the convention of the artist front and centre on
the page. As we are doing a pop style video and ancillaries it was important to us
to utilize this convention, as it is seen in many other artist's such as Ed Sheeran
and Olly Murs. The artist is always in the front and centre of all advertising as
their image and face will be the main image they want their audience to
remember. Which we utilized having tom front and centre on the magazine
advert. This is also seen throughout our digipak and music video with Tom
appearing on 3 of the 4 panels of our digipak, with the one he doesn't appear on
featuring his USP of the hat, and with the music video always him in the centre of
the frame and the focus always on his story with the girl he is trying to get.
• In terms of our Digipak we also utilized the convention of having our
artist in roughly the same theme of location throughout both our ancillaries and
through the music video. This is seen when we see Tom mostly in outdoor or
nature location as this is seen on our digipak with the inclusion of the sun and
greenery and shrubbery throughout with similar locations for the performance of
our music video.
3. Jack Melton
As you can see with
Olly Murs who is an
artist that is very
similar to ours who
also has the theme of
keeping the Artist's
image front and
center.
We used this convention in
our music video and ancillaries
as you can see here with our
digipak album cover, magazine
advert and music video
Also we can see here Shawn
Mendes who is another
example of a male solo pop
artist who also follows the
convention that we used of
the artist being front and
center.
We can see with Justin
Bieber another example of
a pop male solo artist who
uses the convention that
we utilized of having the
singer front and center of
all promotional packages
and music videos.
4. Jack Melton
• Another convention of our genre that we utilized was to keep him in a
familiar setting that could link him to all the ancillaries and the music
video.
• We chose this to be a nature or outdoors scenery. This is evident in our
magazine advert, digipak and music video. We picked outdoor scenery as
we thought it put our artist in a better light and create a better image for
him to look the best as possible and have a more open and positive and
light image for him which we thought places such as the sunset, by a river
and on a field provided with the natural whole colours of nature such as
the grass and places such as the river added a dynamic background for the
artist to be in the background in a shallow focus.
• This is also seen in other examples of male pop artist's such as people like
Olly Murs or Ed Sheeran.
5. Jack Melton
Here are some example of
Artist's in our sub-genre
that also use the theme of
outdoors as scenery to
highlight the artist in a
positive light
Here we can see Olly Murs
who is an artist very similar
to us who is using similar
setting and theme to
promote and give a fluidity
to his image and album
Here we can see another
example of another artist that
is similar to ours who is also
using the theme of the same
setting and image through his
album to provide the audience
with a link through all
promotional packages as we
do.Here we can see our ancillaries and
music video also having this outdoor
image to put the artist in a positive
light and have the overall setting
through all promotional pieces to
provide a link to all our pieces of
work which is a typical convention
that we use in our sub-genre.
6. Tom Macklin
• In our ancillaries we included the artist USP, which includes his
costume with the fedora hat and the blue blazer. This utilized as it
adds to the artists image of bring smart and simple minded.
• This connection between the video and the ancillary's are used quite
often, from artists like Olly murs and Brandon Flowers.
7. The artist carrying there USP through to
their magazine poster.
In our poster the artists hat is highlighted from between the contrast of
the bright background and the dark shadow on the hat.
This kind of nostalgia is used a lot by other artists, who are also wearing
the same costumes in there posters and social media as in there video.
This convention isn't just limited to smart clothing, depending on the genre the costume of
the artist is usually suited towards the target audience.
Artists such as Eminem can be seen in a hoodie or lose
clothing in his videos and ancillaries.
8. For our digipak we tried to create a dominant color to create a sense of nostalgia
through all of the panels. We made sure that in the photos we captured a lot of outdoor
shots which we also focused on capturing a lot of the sky. This made our
photos primarily blue which also connected to our artists clothing, as being dominantly
blue with the fedora hat, blue blazer and jeans.
The idea of a color theme is used often with music artists promotion material, such as
Will Young and Justin Bieber who used a variety of different color depending on the
mood of there albums.
9. Like our digipaks Bieber based had a dominant color that span
across the rest of his digipak. The color yellow is seen in every
panel, this generates a sense of nostalgia and the atmosphere
that sets the audience in the mood for some light pop music.
Will Young uses a blanket of yellow
that covers the image which covers
him and the background. Which is
also used in the rest of his digipak
panels.
In our Digipak we didn't cover the image in a
blanket of color, but still had a prominent color
in the background of each color, like Biebers
digipak.
This kind of color is faint and not as obvious as the blanket of color
seen in Will Youngs digipak but it still makes an impact on the viewer
making the panels seem more connected.
10. Toby Prichard
• For our magazine advert we followed the very standard convention of
having the album name displayed very prominently and clearly as it is
the product that we are trying to sell and we need the audience to
clearly see the album name first, this is a heavy convention
throughout all magazine adverts. As the bottom line is to get people
interested in the album.
11. Toby Prichard
• In our magazine advert another convention we have is that the record
label and copyright information is shown on the front, this is a
convention of all musical magazine adverts because the record label
need to be represented and need people to take notice of it.
12. Toby Prichard
• For our digipack we followed the convention of having the artist and
his USP clearly visible on the CD cover art. We have 3 varied shots of
our artist and a panel dedicated solely to his USP, having the artist
and their USP visible in the Digipak is a convention we have followed
because we want people to see who has performed in that
particular CD- who the artist is so people will listen to it and
remember or know who to look for when they buy it.
13. Ihab S
How do we USE conventions in our magazine advert
• The convention I will be talking about is the use of social
media advertisement. We used this convention because it fits
our artists personal image.
• The use of social media on our magazine advert is extremely
important for us to include due to our artist being mainstream.
With being mainstream we are trying to promote him music
through most music platforms, these include Spotify,
Soundcloud and iTunes
• The main purpose of having his social media music platforms
on his magazine advert is that people who read it will be able
to see where it is available, furthermore, 2 of these 3 platforms
are free to use and you can stream the music free so it is
accessible
14. Ihab S
How do we USE conventions in our
Digipak
The convention I will be talking about that we used I our digipak,
is the use of the artist. As you can see we have used the artist in
3 of the digipak slots this is because we are trying to promote the
artist as much as possible. By having him in the digipak it shows
that he the main character he is talking about in the album
The use of having him in the digipak creates a good image for
him because it shows he is singing about his personal
experiences which makes it more interesting for the audience
because they can relate to the real-life situations they have been
though
This convention is widely used in the industry. The main goal for
them is to try and make as any sales as possible so having the
artist in the frame creates that goal of sale increase
