For this coursework, the brief that my group followed included creating a main product of a video and ancillary tasks
in the form of print media. This included a digipak and an advertisement.
We feel that creating these three products together is effective. A music video for an artist or in our case a band, is
usually released when a new single is completed or when and album is completed. For example, relating to our genre
of alternative rock, Coldplay released a music video Adventure of a Lifetime to show of their new single before their
new album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ was released. This is similar to my groups production as we have created a music
video with our album’s main single and then we have created a digipak with the rest of the album songs with the
single included. Completing these two tasks together has allowed us to be as realistic as the bands and artists do in
reality.

 With the advertisements, from research, these are usually released
when a band or an artist has an upcoming album, concert, festival or gig.
Due to a large proportion of bands and artists releasing new albums, we
felt that a digipak and an advertisement would work hand in hand as our
audience (if we were selling this too them) would be able to find the
advertisement with the name of the band/artist and the new album. Then
they could, from the information in the advertisements, go out and by the
new album because they know that it exists.
 If the advertisement was not created then some of the potential
audience would miss out on the album due to lacking information that the
album exists. These three tasks link hand in hand with each other and if
the music video did not have any ancillary productions to go along side,
then our audience (if we were a real band) would not be as interested if
our band was advertised and an album provided to act as a context to the
new video.
It can be said that these tasks together were not 100 per cent effective. The brief that was chosen was
to complete a video and print media. In this improving technological society that we live in along with
our target audience being young, there is a decreased popularity for advertisements that are in print
from. It can be said that the majority of the younger generation prefer to use digital technologies to
gain information rather than buying magazines were an advertisement may be featured. With the
creation of a print advertisement, it could be suggested that with a small upcoming band, that album,
tour or concert dates might be missed by the potential audience as they have not picked up a magazine
like Alternative Press. It could have been said that especially for a younger adult audience, that a
music video being created alongside web based ancillary tasks may have been more effective in the
current technological world. An example of advertising online could include posting on social media
when a new album or song will be released.
For the digipak, again it could be said that this may not work especially for my
groups target audience due to the increase in demand for music streaming
services. For example, Apple Music and Spotify. Society has already seen a
change from using VCR to CDs and DVDs and this could be said to be occurring
again with CDs and DVDs to digital streaming or downloads. From my own
experience as a media consumer, the majority of my generation do not go out
and buy CDs. They listen to new music on these streaming services listed above.
Again, it could have been said that completing a music video may have worked
better with web based ancillary tasks.
 To convey genre throughout the products we have used the same colours for the
typography on all three productions and the same coloured background for the digipak
and advertisement. This is present in Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ digipak and
advertisement which is how we have conveyed the correct genre of Alternative rock in
our products.
 As our genre is Alternative rock, the song we have chosen is part of this genre and the
name of this song is on the advertisement and digipak, and the song is the soundtrack
for the video which conveys the genre of Alternative rock throughout our products.
 For the style of the typography, the font used has sharp edges with a stencil feel which
is present in all three of the productions. This is also prominent in ‘real texts’ in the
Alternative rock genre such as the advertisement for ‘American Idiot’ by Green Day.
 On both the digipak and advertisement, all members of the group are present in all of
the productions and this links to genre as Alternative rock usually featuring bands
rather than individual artists.
 With have shown the representation of our band by using a male singer/member
and two female singers/members showing our band as incorporating both
masculinity and femininity. It also represents our band as fair and allowing
opportunities for both genders as stereotypically, the majority of rock and
alternative rock bands contain solely male singers/members.
 The use of a leather jacket, a white top and dark jeans has represented us as an
Alternative rock band as this style of clothing is shown in ‘real texts’ such as 3
Doors Down and Green Day.
 The use of our song as our main single, ‘Meanwhile’, has shown the type of
songs that as a group we would use. They song has characteristics especially
with our video which shows Alternative rock and it has represented us as
Alternative rock artists.
 We have effectively targeted our audience in all three of our
productions. This is due to the fact that from audience feedback,
they understood the genre of our productions through the use of the
mise-en-scene with the use of leather clothing in the video and on
the print work. They also understood our genre from the font and
colours used in our productions along with many other features
 The colour scheme of black, dark grey and white is used throughout
‘real texts’ and incorporated in our print productions which has
allowed a clear link between the genre of alternative rock which our
audience understand.
 We have used ourselves in the video, which relates to targeting our
audience effectively as our target audience is 18+. Using ourselves
who are of the same age of our audience means that we are more
relatable to our audience which is a effective way to target our
audience

  • 2. For this coursework, the brief that my group followed included creating a main product of a video and ancillary tasks in the form of print media. This included a digipak and an advertisement. We feel that creating these three products together is effective. A music video for an artist or in our case a band, is usually released when a new single is completed or when and album is completed. For example, relating to our genre of alternative rock, Coldplay released a music video Adventure of a Lifetime to show of their new single before their new album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ was released. This is similar to my groups production as we have created a music video with our album’s main single and then we have created a digipak with the rest of the album songs with the single included. Completing these two tasks together has allowed us to be as realistic as the bands and artists do in reality.   • 3.  With the advertisements, from research, these are usually released when a band or an artist has an upcoming album, concert, festival or gig. Due to a large proportion of bands and artists releasing new albums, we felt that a digipak and an advertisement would work hand in hand as our audience (if we were selling this too them) would be able to find the advertisement with the name of the band/artist and the new album. Then they could, from the information in the advertisements, go out and by the new album because they know that it exists.  If the advertisement was not created then some of the potential audience would miss out on the album due to lacking information that the album exists. These three tasks link hand in hand with each other and if the music video did not have any ancillary productions to go along side, then our audience (if we were a real band) would not be as interested if our band was advertised and an album provided to act as a context to the new video.
  • 4. It can be said that these tasks together were not 100 per cent effective. The brief that was chosen was to complete a video and print media. In this improving technological society that we live in along with our target audience being young, there is a decreased popularity for advertisements that are in print from. It can be said that the majority of the younger generation prefer to use digital technologies to gain information rather than buying magazines were an advertisement may be featured. With the creation of a print advertisement, it could be suggested that with a small upcoming band, that album, tour or concert dates might be missed by the potential audience as they have not picked up a magazine like Alternative Press. It could have been said that especially for a younger adult audience, that a music video being created alongside web based ancillary tasks may have been more effective in the current technological world. An example of advertising online could include posting on social media when a new album or song will be released. For the digipak, again it could be said that this may not work especially for my groups target audience due to the increase in demand for music streaming services. For example, Apple Music and Spotify. Society has already seen a change from using VCR to CDs and DVDs and this could be said to be occurring again with CDs and DVDs to digital streaming or downloads. From my own experience as a media consumer, the majority of my generation do not go out and buy CDs. They listen to new music on these streaming services listed above. Again, it could have been said that completing a music video may have worked better with web based ancillary tasks.
  • 5.  To convey genre throughout the products we have used the same colours for the typography on all three productions and the same coloured background for the digipak and advertisement. This is present in Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ digipak and advertisement which is how we have conveyed the correct genre of Alternative rock in our products.  As our genre is Alternative rock, the song we have chosen is part of this genre and the name of this song is on the advertisement and digipak, and the song is the soundtrack for the video which conveys the genre of Alternative rock throughout our products.  For the style of the typography, the font used has sharp edges with a stencil feel which is present in all three of the productions. This is also prominent in ‘real texts’ in the Alternative rock genre such as the advertisement for ‘American Idiot’ by Green Day.  On both the digipak and advertisement, all members of the group are present in all of the productions and this links to genre as Alternative rock usually featuring bands rather than individual artists.
  • 6.  With have shown the representation of our band by using a male singer/member and two female singers/members showing our band as incorporating both masculinity and femininity. It also represents our band as fair and allowing opportunities for both genders as stereotypically, the majority of rock and alternative rock bands contain solely male singers/members.  The use of a leather jacket, a white top and dark jeans has represented us as an Alternative rock band as this style of clothing is shown in ‘real texts’ such as 3 Doors Down and Green Day.  The use of our song as our main single, ‘Meanwhile’, has shown the type of songs that as a group we would use. They song has characteristics especially with our video which shows Alternative rock and it has represented us as Alternative rock artists.
  • 7.  We have effectively targeted our audience in all three of our productions. This is due to the fact that from audience feedback, they understood the genre of our productions through the use of the mise-en-scene with the use of leather clothing in the video and on the print work. They also understood our genre from the font and colours used in our productions along with many other features  The colour scheme of black, dark grey and white is used throughout ‘real texts’ and incorporated in our print productions which has allowed a clear link between the genre of alternative rock which our audience understand.  We have used ourselves in the video, which relates to targeting our audience effectively as our target audience is 18+. Using ourselves who are of the same age of our audience means that we are more relatable to our audience which is a effective way to target our audience Black, white, silver and grey
