atau metasystem. Dan sistem
terdiri dari beberapa subsystem.

• Sistem menjadi bagian dari sistem yang lebih besar (yang
disebut supersystem atau metasystem). Sistem juga
terbentuk dari beberapa sistem yang lebih kecil (yang
disebut subsystem).
• Beberapa sistem ter-agregasi dan bersinergi secara terpadu
membentuk supersystem. Dan sistem dapat terdekomposisi
menjadi beberapa subsystem yang saling berinteraksi
simultan dan terintegrasi.
• Semakin sempit lingkup sistem yang dipelajari, semakin
detail dan terstruktur permasalahannya. Semakin luas
lingkup sistem yang dipelajari, semakin kompleks dan
majemuk permasalahannya.

  1. Paradigma yang berkembang dan menjadi tantangan bagi Teknik Industri : Waste & Lean. Kompetisi merupakan hal yang pasti dalam dunia usaha. Salah satu aspek yang perlu dikendalikan adalah masalah pemborosan atau waste. Diupayakan untuk dieliminasi atau direduksi. Berkembang prinsip lean manufacturing dengan didukung berbagai metode dan tool untuk mengidentifikasikan dan mengurangi pemborosan. Change & Agile. Perbedaan dan perubahan pada permintaan dan perilaku pasar menjadi tantangan dan peluang dalam dunia usaha. Bahkan dapat dikatakan bahwa semuanya mungkin berubah, kecuali satu yang pasti yaitu perubahan itu sendiri. Berkembang prinsip agile manufacturing yang merespon dengan cepat atas perubahan yang terjadi bahkan mengantisipasi lebih dini. Green & Sustainable. Ketersediaan sumber daya semakin mengalami penurunan dan bahkan menuju kelangkaan, terutama sumber daya yang tak terbarukan. Jumlah populasi sebaliknya semakin meningkat, sehingga permintaan juga menjadi melonjak. Juga menjadi perhatian global mengenai konservasi lingkungan sebagai penyokong utama kehidupan. Berkembang prinsip sustainable manufacturing untuk mengembangkan upaya daur ulang reuse-recycle-recovery, di mana ujungnya adalah upaya reduce baik pada pencemaran maupun eksploitasi sumber daya. Borderless & Supply Chain. Peran pemerintah negara untuk melindungi pertumbuhan ekonomi bangsanya semakin dikurangi. Perlahan-lahan batas teritori negara tidak mampu membatasi aliran produk atau sumber daya lainnya melintasi antar negara. Bahkan berkembang pula Supply Chain Management, di mana pelaku usaha semakin mempersempit core-business-nya untuk meningkatkan competitive-advantage-nya dalam lean-agile-sustainable business. Supplier-Producer-Customer tidak dibatasi oleh aturan-aturan proteksi politis bahkan tersebar lintas negara secara global.
  2. Dalam paradigma waste & lean dikenal istilah “muda”, “mura’ dan “muri”. Muda bermakna pemborosan. Mura bermakna ketidak-teraturan atau ketidak-bakuan. Muri bermakna pembebanan berlebih. Tiga istilah tersebut menghambat penerapan lean dalam usaha. Terdapat 7 macam waste atau pemborosan yang digambarkan dalam roda. Metode Kaizen atau perbaikan berkelanjutan diterapkan secara bertahap untuk mengurangi ketujuh macam waste tersebut. Setiap perbaikan diperoleh maka dibuat pembakuan atau standar kerja yang baru agar dapat mengendalikan pemborosan secara lebih baik.
  3. Tujuh macam pemborosan melibatkan tiga komponen, yaitu material, mesin dan manusia. Beberapa contoh pemborosan dan penyebabnya dapat dilihat pada gambar.
  4. Dalam paradigma Change & Agile, dapat dilihat pergeseran yang terjadi di dunia usaha pada gambar kiri. Terdapat perubahan dari mass production menjadi mass customization. Semakin banyak alternatif yang dapat dipilih oleh konsumen. Perubahan dari make to stock menjadi engineer to order. Dahulu sebelumnya, karena kompetitor sedikit bahkan mungkin menjadi pemain tunggal, produksi lebih cenderung memproduksi banyak dan distok, selanjutnya konsumen memilih dari stok yang ditawarkan. Namun sekarang kompetitor bisa sangat banyak, dan bahkan memberikan kewenangan pada konsumen untuk meminta dibuatkan sesuai keinginannya. Semakin pendeknya siklus hidup produk Tuntutan untuk mengubah aliran proses sekuensial menjadi proses concurrent. Perubahan perilaku konsumen. Perkembangan teknologi dan inovasinya Sehingga kapankah tepatnya pelaku usaha melakukan inovasi atau pengembangan produknya atau bahkan memikirkan kembali terkait core businessnya. Gambar kanan menunjukkan gambaran siklus hidup produk yang juga dapat digunakan sebagai model siklus hidup bisnis. Awalnya belum dikenal, dan tumbuh secara perlahan, terus meningkat hingga pada akhirnya setelah mengalami kejenuhan atau ada produk (usaha) yang baru (kompetitor) maka mulai mengalami penurunan. Apakah menunggu setelah mengalami penurunan??
  5. Gambar kiri menggambarkan siklus hidup produk yang lain. yaitu dari produk dikembangkan hingga produk dipakai dan dibuang. Merupakan rangkaian proses, baik yang memberikan nilai tambah ataupun tidak. Terlihat bahwa pada penganggaran atau perencanaan seringkali biaya desain produk relatif kecil. Padahal dalam upaya memenuhi kebutuhan dan keinginan konsumen memberikan pengaruh yang paling besar.
  6. Pada paradigma Green & Sustainable, Teknik Industri perlu memperhatikan atau berwawasan lingkungan hidup, biotik dan abiotik. Pada saat membicarakan ekologi dan pencemaran, maka tidak terlepas dari dari environmental carrying capacity. Dalam bahasa Indonesia, dibedakan dua: daya dukung lingkungan hidup dan daya tampung lingkungan hidup. Pada saat mempelajari pencemaran, maka masalah daya tampung lingkungan hidup yang perlu diperhatikan. Sebaliknya terkait ketersediaan atau kelangkaan sumber daya, maka masalah daya dukung lingkungan hidup yang perlu diperhatikan. Upaya yang dapat dilakukan adalah: mulai disposal di tempat pembuangan akhir hingga conserve. semakin ke atas upaya yang semakin ramah lingkungan.
