First words Your child will probably
say his first word right around his first
birthday (what a nice present for
Mom!). By 16 months, she'll be able
to say a handful of words—an
average of 50 for girls and 30 for
boys. (Boys tend to develop speech
about a month or two later.)
IDIOMORPHS:
Words small children invent in their
initial attempts to acquire a
language
e.g. wa wa for cat
EXAMPLE FOR IDIOMORPHS
 (Reich, 1986). For example, a child may
have a special invented word that refers to a
toy or to his personal blanket. This
idiomorphs is a “word” in the sense that it is
stable and used to refer to a particular
object on a consistent basis. In addition to
these invented words, children also produce
more conventional words that resemble
adult pronunciation and meaning.
WHAT IS EGOCENTRIC SPEECH ?
Egocentric speech
Explanation:
Egocentric speech is a form of speech
that is observed typically in young
children, and involves them using
speech without addressing anyone in
particular. In the following sections we
will learn more about this speech and
understand its many components.
- To give an example ;
--observe a young child at play. You will
find that a child has the tendency of
talking to himself and literally giving a
commentary of what he/she is doing.
While feeding a doll, or playing with a car,
for example, they'll say something like
'Now I'm going to feed the doll' .

Children quite naturally want to
talk about what surround them
Parents fuss a great deal over
their children first word
Every children have a got ability to

The birth of grammar
 Babies start learning grammar from the
moment they're born, a study has revealed.
 Researchers found that in their first year of
life, infants are listening intently to language
and deconstructing word patterns.
Holophrastic
 term used to describe one-word sentences
used by small children .
 Using or consisting of a single word that
functions as a phrase or sentences.
 Examples for holophrastic
 The children were matched for mean length
of utterance, all subjects
performing at the holophrastic level
Transformational generative
grammar
Chomsky’s model of grammar which posits a set of
grammatical rules or transformation which operate on
phrase structure to generate all and only of the
sentence of a language .

PIVOT
Word used by young
children either to begin or
end a two word utterance .
For example :
Dady car
