MSDs can be prevented by maintaining neutral postures through properly adjusting workstations and equipment to fit each individual. This involves keeping the wrists straight, elbows bent at 90 degrees, monitor at eye level, and using chairs, keyboards and mice in ways that avoid extreme motions or positions. Taking frequent breaks and varying tasks can also help reduce injury risk.

- 2. Why Use Proper Keyboarding Techniques? Reduce injury and stress to the body Increase productivity Key correctly
- 3. Eight Essential Keyboarding Techniques Home Row position Eyes on copy Feet flat on the floor Good posture Keyboard placement Quick, snappy strokes Fingers curved, wrists natural Elbows in, arms to side
- 4. Home Row Position Fingers should be curved and placed on home row keys: Left hand: ASDF Right hand: JKL; Tip: Use bumps on F and J keys to keep fingers in place.
- 5. Eyes on Copy Eyes should stay on text that is being keyed at all times. Do not look at keyboard. Taking your eyes off of copy will cause you to lose your place.
- 6. Feet Flat on the Floor Place feet in front of you and flat on the floor. Your feet serve as an anchor to your body when keying. This helps to keep your body from moving around. It also helps with proper alignment and posture.
- 7. Good Posture Sit up straight, Using good posture helps you to avoid injury. NO!
- 8. Keyboard Placement The keyboard should be placed at the edge of the desk. Your body should be about a hand span away from the desk.
- 9. Use Quick, Snappy Strokes Strike the keys with quick, snappy strokes. Do not hold down keys in a slow motion.
- 10. Elbows/Arms Elbows should be tucked in. Arms should be relaxed and remain close to the body. What’s wrong with this picture?
