A low cost method of real time pavement condition data sharing to expedite maintenance intervention
Pavements for roads in cities and highways are degraded with potholes, cracking, and rutting distresses. There is a strong need to identify these locations and sections with undesired longitudinal roughness quickly and accurately every year. Traditionally, expensive standalone survey vehicles for roughness measurements and more expensive multi-function vehicles are employed by highway agencies or through contract services, which most cities and local agencies can’t afford. The primary objective of this study is to describe a low cost method to collect essential pavement condition data and share real time to expedite maintenance intervention needs. This facilitates rapid identification of pavement sections with undesired longitudinal roughness and local defects. This paper discusses the impact of social media, crowd sourcing, and advances in cheaper accurate motion sensors and cloud server data processing. These tools make it possible to develop easy-to-use low cost methods, which are affordable by city public work and smaller road agencies.

With the constant increase in vehicular traffic, existing traffic management solutions have become inefficient. Urbanization has led to an increase in traffic jams and accidents in major cities. In order to accommodate the growing needs of transport systems today, there is a need for an Intelligent Transport System. Vehicular Ad hoc Network VANET is a growing technology that assists in Intelligent Transport Systems. VANETs enable communication between vehicles as well as fixed infrastructure called Road Side Units RSU . We propose a distributed, collaborative traffic congestion detection and dissemination system that uses VANET. Each of the driver's smart phones is equipped with a Traffic App which is capable of location detection through Geographic Position based System GPS . This information is relayed to a remote server which detects traffic congestion. Once congestion is confirmed the congestion information is disseminated to the end user phone through RSUs. The Mobile App transmits the location information at periodic intervals. Using the latitude, longitude and the current time, the location of each vehicle is traced. Using location information, the distance moved by the vehicle at a given time is monitored. If the value is below a fixed threshold, congestion is suspected in a particular area. If many vehicles in the same area send similar messages, traffic congestion is confirmed. Once traffic congestion is confirmed, the vehicles approaching the congested area are informed about the traffic through display boards that are available in the nearest RSUs traffic signals . The congestion information is also made available through the Mobile App present in vehicles approaching the congested area. The approaching vehicles may take diversion and alleviate congestion. Abstract—In this paper we study models and coordination poli-
cies for intermodal Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand (AMoD),
wherein a fleet of self-driving vehicles provides on-demand
mobility jointly with public transit. Specifically, we first present
a network flow model for intermodal AMoD, where we capture
the coupling between AMoD and public transit and the goal is
to maximize social welfare. Second, leveraging such a model,
we design a pricing and tolling scheme that allows the system
to recover a social optimum under the assumption of a perfect
market with selfish agents. Third, we present real-world case
studies for the transportation networks of New York City and
Berlin, which allow us to quantify the general benefits of
intermodal AMoD, as well as the societal impact of different
vehicles. In particular, we show that vehicle size and powertrain
type heavily affect intermodal routing decisions and, thus, system
efficiency. Our studies reveal that the cooperation between AMoD
fleets and public transit can yield significant benefits compared
to an AMoD system operating in isolation, whilst our proposed
tolling policies appear to be in line with recent discussions for
the case of New York City.
I. INTRODUCTION
TRAFFIC congestion is soaring all around the world. Besidesmere discomfort for passengers, congestion causes severe
economic and environmental harm, e.g., due to the loss of
working hours and pollutant emissions such as CO2, partic-
ulate matter, and NOx [1]. In 2013, traffic congestion cost
U.S. citizens 124 Billion USD [2]. Notably, transportation
remains one of a few sectors in which emissions are still
increasing [3]. Governments and municipalities are struggling
to find sustainable ways of transportation that can match
mobility needs and reduce environmental harm as well as
congestion.
To achieve sustainable modes of transportation, new mobil-
ity concepts and technology changes are necessary. However,
the potential to realize such concepts in urban environments is
limited, since upgrades to available infrastructures (e.g., roads
and subway lines) and their capacity are often extremely costly
and require decades-long planning timelines. Thus, mobility
concepts that use existing infrastructure in a more efficient way
are especially attractive. In this course, mobility-on-demand
services appear to be particularly promising. Herein, two main
concepts exist. On the one hand, free floating car sharing
systems strive to reduce the total number of private vehicles
in city centers. However, these systems offer limited flexibility
and are generally characterized by low adoption rates that
result from low vehicle availabilities due to the difficulty of

A New Paradigm in User Equilibrium-Application in Managed Lane PricingCSCJournals
Ineffective use of the High-Occupancy-Vehicle (HOV) lanes has the potential to decrease the overall roadway throughput during peak periods. Excess capacity in HOV lanes during peak periods can be made available to other types of vehicles, including single occupancy vehicles (SOV) for a price (toll). Such dual use lanes are known as “Managed Lanes.” The main purpose of this research is to propose a new paradigm in user equilibrium to predict the travel demand for determining the optimal fare policy for managed lane facilities. Depending on their value of time, motorists may choose to travel on Managed Lanes (ML) or General Purpose Lanes (GPL). In this study, the features in the software called Toll Pricing Modeler version 4.3 (TPM-4.3) are described. TPM-4.3 is developed based on this new user equilibrium concept and utilizes it to examine various operating scenarios. The software has two built-in operating objective options: 1) what would the ML operating speed be for a specified SOV toll, or 2) what should the SOV toll be for a desired minimum ML operating speed. A number of pricing policy scenarios are developed and examined on the proposed managed lane segment on Interstate 30 (I-30) in Grand Prairie, Texas. The software provides quantitative estimates of various factors including toll revenue, emissions and system performance such as person movement and traffic speed on managed and general purpose lanes. Overall, among the scenarios examined, higher toll rates tend to generate higher toll revenues, reduce overall CO and NOx emissions, and shift demand to general purpose lanes. On the other hand, HOV preferential treatments at any given toll level tend to reduce toll revenue, have no impact on or reduce system performance on managed lanes, and increase CO and NOx emissions.
Creating Better Places with Transportation Demand Management (TDM)Mobility Lab
A “transit premium” can increase property values by anywhere between a few percentage points up to more than 150 percent.
TDM focuses on shifting travelers away from single occupancy-vehicle modes like biking, walking, bus, and rail. In many cases, however, TDM solutions and programs may address only a single alternative mode, or ignore the increasing diversity in how people – particularly younger generations – are traveling.
There is strong evidence of this narrow focus occurring frequently. Residential buildings may tout their WalkScore as a measure of pedestrian-friendliness. Or a commercial building may earn a Bicycle Friendly Business’ designation from the League of American Bicyclists. While these tools and designations are certainly valuable, sustainable buildings should have an an equitable distribution of transportation options and opportunities.
Most property owners and managers (and the business leaders who operate within them) can find ways to better promote and encourage a range of multi-modal options.
My contribution to helping them do so is the Multi-Modal Transportation Score (or what I like to call ModeScore for short). It measures the total accessibility of a given building, taking into account all possible sustainable transportation modes. My overarching goal is that building users will create and embrace programs to encourage and increase alternative travel.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

THE PROBLEM IS TRAFFIC
Traffic is a condition on transport networks that occurs as use increases, and is characterized by
slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queuing. A situation in which a long
line of vehicles on a road have stopped moving or are moving very slowly.
Solving the problem of traffic congestion. Traffic congestion is a growing problem in many
metropolitan areas. Congestion increases travel time, air pollution, carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions and fuel use because cars cannot run efficiently.
4. Page | 4
CMR UNIVERSITY
BACKDROP OF PROBLEM IDENTIFIED
Too many cars for the roadway due to inadequate mass transit options or oath-the rapid growth
of the population, so that the number of cars is increasing annually. Obstacles in the road causing
a blockage and merger. These can be any of the following:
Double parking
road work
lane closure due to utility work
road narrowing down
an accident
Traffic signals out of sync many times on purpose or occasionally when the computers
are malfunctioning.
inadequate green time
too many pedestrians crossing not permitting cars to turn
too many trucks on the road due to inadequate rail freight opportunities
Overdevelopment in areas where the mass transit system is already overcrowded and the
road system is inadequate.
There are more number of women drivers and younger drivers today than in the past.

CMR UNIVERSITY
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO TRAFFICPROBLEMS
Introduce electronic road pricing and road-space rationing systems
Encourage more people to opt for bicycles
Road tax should be levied on car owners depending on their road usage each day
Buses and other public transport services should be improved
Proper lanes should be created for four-wheelers7 and two-wheelers separately
Heavy penalties should be imposed on those who fail to produce emission test reports
LITERATURE REVIEW
-Traffic congestion is a temporal condition on networks that occurs as utility increases, and is
characterized by slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased queuing. When volume of traffic
is high and so heterogeneous that the interaction between vehicles slows down the speed of
traffic, traffic congestion is the result. As demand approaches the capacity of a road (or of the
intersections along the road), traffic congestion sets in. When vehicles are fully stopped for the
period of time, this is colloquially known as a traffic jam.

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)
GIS is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen
on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical
analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. These
abilities distinguish GIS from other systems and make it valuable to a wide range of public and
private enterprises for explaining events, predicting outcomes, and planning strategies (Moses
Santhakumar, 1998). GIS store information about the world as collection of thematic layers
which can be linked together by geography. This is a simple but extremely powerful and
versatile concept has proven invaluable for solving many real-world problems from tracking
delivery vehicles, to recording details of planning applications, to modeling global atmospheric
circulation. GIS allows us to bring all types of data together based on the geographic and
location component of the data. But unlike a static paper map, GIS can display many layers of
information that is useful to us(www.esri.com). Using this, one will be able to integrate,
visualize, manage, solve, and present the information in a new way. Relationships between the
data will become more apparent and the data will become more valuable. GIS gives us the power
to create maps, integrate information, visualize scenarios, solve complicated problems, present
powerful ideas, and develop effective solutions like never before.

TRAFFIC STUDIES
Traffic studies or surveys are carried out to analyze the traffic characteristics. These studies help
in deciding the geometric design features and traffic control for safe and efficient traffic
movements. The traffic surveys for collecting traffic data are also called traffic census.
The various traffic studies generally carried out are:
Traffic volume study
Speed Studies
Traffic flow characteristics
Traffic capacity study
Parking study
Head way study

DETAILED EXPLAINATION OF SOLUTION WITH FLOWCHART IF ANY
Traffic Flow is the study of the movement of individual drivers and vehicles between two points
and the interactions they make with one another. Unfortunately, studying traffic flow is difficult
because driver behavior is something that cannot be predicted with one-hundred percent
certainty. Fortunately, drivers tend to behave within a reasonably consistent range and, thus,
traffic streams tend to have some reasonable consistency and can be roughly represented
mathematically. To better represent traffic flow, relationships have been established between the
three main characteristics:
(1) flow,
(2) density, and
(3) velocity
These relationships help in planning, design, and operations of roadway facilities.

TECHNOLOGY
New technologies in traffic management Balance between Meeting and Managing
Demands:
A choice is open to society as to the extent to which demands for travel should be met or
managed, and the individual's preferences may not lead to the best result. The CTS-3
models are designed to forecast travel demand under the influence of assumed policy
inputs. The selection of policies will have a great influence on the resulting demand, how
that demand manifests itself, and hence the "need" for infrastructure to meet the demand.
10. Page | 10
CMR UNIVERSITY
The most important single variable in this context is the size of the private vehicle fleet,
since this is known from experience to be manageable via fiscal measures. The
commercial vehicle fleet size is much less amenable to change by fiscal measures, since
the vehicles, and their trips, are needed to maintain the economy, and the cost of
transport forms only a small proportion of the total production costs of goods or services.
In effect, the commercial sector will track the changes in the economy, and the
determination of the direction of the whole economy is beyond the scope of CTS-3. In
addition, transport policy can have little effect on the other input variables that determine
demand, such as population and GDP levels.
CTS-3 has examined the demand that arises from a wide range of development
scenarios, as described in Chapter 2. A key element of the low, medium and high growth
scenarios is the forecast fleet size. The high private vehicle fleet is that which is
estimated by the Consultants to be most likely if economic growth picks up soon and
continues and if no additional restraint measures are employed. The medium and low
fleets imply a less booming economy and/or increasing levels of restraint. The
Consultants consider that the implications of the high vehicle fleet on the need for
infrastructure, and the probable deterioration in the environment, are such that it will be
undesirable, and so in the long run restraint measures may be needed. However, given
the current state of the regional economy, it may be some years before significant
problems are encountered. Under these circumstances, the most prudent course is to
monitor the increases in vehicle fleets, and the resultant increases in highway traffic, and
11. Page | 11

to act firmly if the forecast problems start to manifest. This action could take the form of
ownership or usage restraint.
The infrastructure plans provided by CTS-3, together with modifications resulting from
subsequent review, will allow Government to handle future traffic increases. The
possible restraint measures that may be used are described below:
Private Vehicle Restraint
The possible strategies for managing road use by private vehicles can be broadly
subdivided into ownership restraint and usage restraint.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
Traffic management measures should be implemented based on:
1. Category and function of the street
2. Forecast traffic intensity and the structure of transport flows
3. structure of transport flows
4. General concept of traffic organization
5. Results of traffic organization solutions impacting concrete groups of traffic
participants
6. Adjustment of traffic organization solutions to the needs of people with reduced
mobility
12. Page | 12

7. Increased traffic safety on streets
8. Protection of urban sensitive objects from intense transport flows
IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS AND CHALLENGES
Various solutions have been developed and implemented in solving traffic congestions especially
for congestions in urban areas categorized the solutions into two strategies: hard and soft. Hard
strategy involves changes in network topology structure while soft strategy focuses on managing
the traffic based on current structure. Hard strategy will incur extra cost and manpower
compared to soft strategy.
Traffic routing is the process of improving traffic flow by redirecting and re-routing the vehicles
in the traffic0 network according to changes in traffic conditions. The main purpose of traffic
routing is to homogenize and improve traffic flow in network structure. It is a different problem
compared with Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). In VRP, the algorithm tends to find the shortest
path for vehicles to visit all nodes at a time. While in routing process, the objective is to find the
best route for vehicles from its origin to the destination.

TECHNOLOGY BASED SOULUTION FOR THE PROBLEM:
Each of the citizens should obey traffic laws and safety guidelines, this fundamental self-
discipline is the key to turnaround the problems in traffic. Technology cannot help much in this
case.
Use public transport: take mass transit as much as possible.
Obey traffic rules: Always follow rules, signs and speed limit so all vehicle will go
in flow & traffic would not be stuck.
Map out alternative routes.
Walking should be preferred for less distance.
First reduce the need of moving from one place to another. Internet / Video calling is
great example of that.
Smaller Single person electric car.
We can use carpool
We can use Google maps

CONCLUSIONS AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Thus from above conclude that using the method of density bases control of traffic lights we
save a considerable amount of time and also we can prevent excessive traffic jams thus leading t
smooth traffic flow
In India we are following time based control of traffic signals and we are experiencing a heavy
traffic jams all over which in turn consumes lot of time and fuel we hope these methods will
adopt as soon as possible so that the limitations we are experiencing with present method can be
overcome
Learning experience
We can car pool to reduce traffic
We should use public transport
Mass travelling
Obey traffic rules
Use Google maps technology to find the easiest way

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IN HARDWARE
Dell Technologies is thinking like Alphabet/Google
Dell Technologies will be a mix of independent units tethered to each other. That's similar to
Alphabet, which has a bunch of independent units led by Google working closely with each
other. The Dell Technologies units will continue to function independently, but also work
together to offer integrated products like hyper converged systems that mix Dell's servers, EMC's
storage, VMWare virtualization and private-public cloud assets.
Overlapping products are not in immediate danger
The Dell-EMC merger made sense because the assets were compatible, particularly Dell servers,
EMC storage arrays and VMware virtualization assets. Before the merger was completed, Dell
made space for EMC's assets by agreeing to shed its software business for $2 billion to equity
firms Francisco Partners and Elliott Management. It also sold its IT services businesses for $3
billion to NTT Data. There are still some overlapping clouds, security, and storage products, but
Dell Technologies won't kill them off immediately.
There will be no changes to the PC business
There will be no changes in the PC business, Dell says. Driver development won't change, and
customers will get the same level of support. The company will continue to offer XPS,
Alienware and Inspiron PCs, and it will explore new areas of growth. In fact, Dell plans to show
groundbreaking products at CES early next year, and displays will be a big area of focus for Dell
34. Page | 34

Technologies, Burton said. Virtual reality and augmented reality are also a big part of the
company's future.
All-flash arrays and rack-scale infrastructure are priorities
All-flash storage is huge and growing at a rate of 100 percent a year, so it will be a big area of
focus for Dell Technologies, Burton said. Another long-term focus will be on rack-scale
computing and infrastructure, which will change server structures and bring more processing
speed to data centers.
The company will break up traditional server components like storage, processing, and memory
into discrete boxes, and they will be networked with super-speedy interconnects. The goal is to
make a data center configured like one giant server, and the rack-scale structure will help reduce
power bills and cut inefficiencies in processing and data movement. Dell already offers servers
for rack-scale infrastructures.
EMC product users won't be shortchanged
Existing Dell Technologies assets like VMware and Pivotal are used in servers from several
vendors, and that won't change. VMware products figure to have higher levels of integration in
Dell servers, but customers with a preference for non-Dell servers will still be able to buy EMC
products and support. HPE and Lenovo are notable partners with VMware, but it's not clear if
those partnerships will remain in place.
Dell Technologies won't be a slave to Wall Street whims
35. Page | 35
CMR UNIVERSITY
Dell went private in 2013 to stay away from the bright lights of Wall Street, where shareholders
demanded immediate results, which the company says stifled innovation. In that vein, remaining
private will help Dell Technologies to chase long-term goals.
"We don't have to cater to short-term thinking that exists in the market. We can think to
decades," Burton said.

CONCLUSION AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Dell has a come a long way from building computers in his dorm room to becoming one of the
biggest company in the world. It is interesting that Dell bought IBM parts from a warehouse and
created PC that he later sold by mail order. It was a simple move that created the biggest
computer company in the world. His method is simple. He sells his computers directly to the
customers without using retail stores. It strives in efficiency by selling customers with best
quality in a low price. Dell Company uses business to business as well as business to consumer
to buy and sell products on internet, which is also known as e-commerce. In a conclusion, Dell
company will continues to grow by its direct selling strategy. Dell Company will continue to
offer new quality products which both individuals and businesses will need.
Processes to backup and restore any VMware vSphere component participating in ELM must be
absolutely reliable and supportable across Converged Systemsand data centers. To maintain
synchronization of PSC replication requires 100% network availability between PSCs in
different Converged Systems or data centers. After a PSC outage, synchronization may take
some time to occur.
