ABSTRACT
 This paper deals with the topic “Project Loon”
which can make a revolution in the year to
come.
 Many of us think that the internet as a global
community . But two-thirds of the world
population does not yet have Internet access.
 The internet is one of the most transformative
technologies of our lifetime.
 So, Google-X the secretive lab announced its
latest project known as “Balloon Powered
Internet access”.
4
Introduction:
 What is meant by Project Loon?
Ans:
 Project loon is a network of stratospheric balloons
designed to bring internet connectivity to rural and
remote communities worldwide.
 These are network of balloons travelling on edge of
space, designed to connect people with the help of
internet access.
 It is a Google project sending hot air balloons into
air to provide Wi-Fi access.
 Project loon is also known as “Google Loon” (or)
“Balloon powered internet access”.

Project loon design:
 There exist mainly three components of Loon.
1)Envelope: It is sheets of
Polythene plastic and parachute
attached to top of envelope allows
Controlled descent and landing
When a balloon is ready to service.
2)Solar Panels: It is in between
Envelope and hardware and it
Produce nearly 100 watt power in full
Sun and also charges to keep the unit
running even in Night time.
3)Equipment: It is a small box that contain
Circuit boards , Radio antennas , Batteries.
7
Where loon is situated:
 Loon balloon float in the
stratosphere at 20 km
altitude.
 Stratosphere is the
second layer of atmosphere
with range 10-50 km altitude.
 Stratosphere is in between
Mesosphere and Troposphere.
8
Advantages of stratosphere:
 The winds here moves steadily and slowly
between 5 and 20 mph.
 Commercial airlines fly between 9 and 12 km
altitude , thus it avoid airplane traffics.
 Most weather phenomenon occur in troposphere ,
thus they avoid adverse weather.
 This sphere is great for solar panel, because there
is no cloud to block to sun.
 The wind pattern in the sphere can be modeled
with reasonable accuracy.
 This layer is advantageous because of it’s low wind
speed and minimal turbulence.
9
How loon Moves:
 Each layer of wind in stratosphere varies in direction.
 Software algorithms are used to determine where the
balloon need to go ,then moves it into a layer of wind
blowing in the right direction.
 By moving with the wind, the balloons can be arranged to
form one large communication network.
10
How loon connects:
 A user with the specialized antenna sends
signals via a radio frequency over
ISM(Industrial, Scientific and Medical) bands to
a balloon close to him.
 Each balloon is equipped with a GPS for
tracking its location.
 The balloon sends signals to neighbouring
balloons. Then the signals reach the balloon
which is connected to the local internet.
 The local ISP receives the data and forward
them via balloon in the sky to the Destination.
11
How loon connects:
 Finally, the balloon close to the receiver broadcast the data
to the ground via a radio frequency over ISM bands.
 It provide ground connectivity to an area about 40 km
diameter circle at 3G speed.
 The special antenna installed outside home receives data.
12
Advantages:
 Easy to use
 Very speed performance
 Increase internet use with cheaper internet
 Weather Surveillance and intelligence gathering
 Use of Renewable Energy
 GPS expansion and disaster management
 Remote communication
 Launching it does not require high technical
skills
13
Disadvantages:
 Very high in cost
 Maintenance problem
 Balloon can work for few weeks only
 Take’s more time to manufacture
 Hardware Failure
 Internet Privacy
 International politics hurdle
 Crash incidents
 Cost of operation is not revealed by Google
14
Applications:
 It can improve communication during any
disaster to affected regions.
 It will be available at all places even in deserts
such as Sahara and in cold climate regions.
 It is fast , efficient and more reliable than wired
broadband connections.
 It can improve internet usage in developing
countries such as Africa and Southeast Asia that
can’t afford underground fiber cable for
providing internet connection.
15
Future scope:
 Indian company specify Inc. is the first private
non-profit company which is working with outer
net to provide global free Wi-Fi access.
 Outer net is planned to begin broadcasting now
a days.
“ FORGET THE INTERNET-SOON
THERE WILL BE THE OUTERNET “
16
Conclusion
 Project loon is a ambitious project and the world
will highly benefit from it.
 Project loon, an initiative to help fill in those
internet gaps through the use of networked
balloons.
 The goal is to provide broadband-like internet
for the two-thirds of the world that doesn’t have
access to a reliable internet connection by
balloons.
 It is still in experimental phase.
