The document discusses selecting and constructing photography for a music magazine. It examines the work of two photographers, Tom Barnes and Mark Latham. For Tom Barnes' photography of a band, the document's author likes an image that is atypical and draws the audience in with its serious tone, plain black background, and use of lighting to emphasize the subjects. They suggest it could work well as a double-page spread in the magazine. For Mark Latham's live concert photography, they like an image that captures a real performance moment and uses a low camera angle to make the subject appear powerful. They say it could be featured but not as a central image, as it is an action shot.
2. I looked at a series of websites to find appropriate
professional photography that I could use in my
magazine. This is because:
I need to have lots of options for what to use in the
magazine.
I need to have plenty of variety that helps to represent
my music scene accurately.
3. Tom Barnes Photography (Artists and bands)
Tom Barnes is a photographer that does a lot of set up photo shoot for musicians. Each shoot he
does is very different, often depending on the bands personality, image and genre. His work is
very well appreciated for the kinds of images he presents. He uses props, scenery, emotion and
camera angles to get specific shots and achieve the kind of image he wants.
4. I like this image because it’s very different
to the typical shoot. The focus’ are all
emotionless and using direct mode of
address to make the audience feel drawn
in and make it feel more serious. There is
a plain black background which I think is
useful because it makes the image more
mysterious (you don’t have any clues to
where they are/what is the story behind
the image) and it makes the focus’ more
bold as they’re wearing white and lights
have been put in front/above them to
emphasise the image.
It would influence the design of the page
by the uses of colours that would be used.
The colour scheme would be based around
the image so the house style would be
influenced.
It might have been created by a
photographer for a number of reasons. It
was most probably for commercial use to
publicise the band (e.g. tour posters or
magazine posters).
It could be used for a double page spread
in a magazine as it is a wide image and
would fill out a page well, the rest of the
writing could be placed around the image
and seen well as there is no background
to interfere and make it hard to read. I
also think that the image would draw me
into reading an article about the band as
it looks very strange but appealing. I
don’t think the image is bold enough to
make a front page as it is landscape
rather than portrait and the colours don’t
really draw you in (based around shades).
5. Mark Latham Photography (bands within ‘Rock’)
Although many of these images are
set up, many photographers focus
their photography on live images.
Such as ‘Mark Latham’ who also
does photography work for an array
of bands, mainly under any genre
within Rock.
6. I like this image because it captures an image
from a live music performance so well.
Although this image was not set up (e.g.. The
photographer did not tell the focus where to
stand/what to wear etc.) it represents a real
image of the bands performance. The image
has been taken from a low angle, although this
may have been because the photographer can
only stand in front of the barrier and not get on
stage to take photos, it works well because low
angles cause the focus to look tall and
powerful. It makes the focus look superior and
really emphasises the image as a whole.
It could be used for a feature shot in an article. The image would probably not be used for a
main centre image on a magazine because it’s an action shot, but if the magazine was
reviewing a gig or talking about the bands live performance as a whole, an image like this
could be used (they are used frequently).
It probably wouldn’t influence the design of the page so much because it wouldn’t be a
main focus’ image but it would be important the image fitted in with the overall colour
scheme being used on that page.
