2. I looked at a series of websites to find
appropriate professional photography that I
could use in my magazine. This is because:
I need to see the type of photography that is
appropriate for a music magazine to help me decide
what I should be including.
I need to have plenty of variety that helps to represent
my music scene accurately.
3. I like this one because I think the
composition works well in the photo.
The way the band members are stood
in a triangle formation clearly shows
who the lead singer is in the band. As
well as this, the way the lead singer is
much more colourful compared to the
other two and the background it
makes your eyes more drawn to her,
which is a good feature as she is likely
to be the most recognisable person in
the band.
It could be used for either a poster in
the magazine or as a large image to
go on a double page spread, with the
other page full of writing. I think this
would work well as it’s quite an
attention grabbing, interesting photo
so I think it should be made as the
focus.
The photo uses a direct mode of
address which engages the viewer,
and the body language is quite casual
which makes it seem more natural
and open. The lighting used in the
photo makes you focus in on the faces
of the people in the band, making
them more recognisable.

4. I like this photo because it shows the group at a concert which reinforces the idea that
it’s a picture of a band. As well as this, even though it shows the band standing in a line
it’s still obvious who the lead singer is by looking as their poses/body language. I also
like the way the smoke in the top corners frames and brings focus in on the band
members, as the background is quite busy and otherwise would steal your attention.
The black and white nature of the photo means that the design of the page would
have to be changed in colour scheme so as to make it match. For example, a really
colourful background would take focus away from the picture. I think this picture
would work best in a minimalist themed page.
The photo is in black and white which is useful because it stops you from getting
distracted by all the people in the background. I think the background works well
because it shows the fan base of the band which makes it more interesting. As well as
this the top balcony is used as a frame which brings focus back down to the band. The
photo is taken from a high angle which allows it to include the whole background to
the ceiling from the floor which improves the composition of the photo.
5. I like this one because the composition
works well and the person in the photo is
doing an interesting pose compared to
what you’d usually see in a magazine.
I think this would work well as a feature
article photo with a page of writing
alongside it. Other than this it could be
effective to cut use Photoshop to cut the
person out and use it on a contents page.
This photo wouldn’t effect the design of
the page much because it has a pretty
basic colour scheme and is a relatively
unobtrusive photograph. The only way I
think this picture could affect the design is
that it wouldn’t work on a bright or
colourful background because there isn’t a
wide range of colours in it and it wouldn’t
fit in with the design well.
This photo uses the rule of thirds to bring
focus to the right. As well as this the use of
lighting is fairly interesting because it’s
somewhat basic apart from the flare in the
top right. This works well because its
positioning lines up with the arm and fist
of the musician in the photo. This photo
also uses a lower angle which is useful
because it allows his whole body to be
seen in the picture.

6. I like this one because the composition
is quite different and so is the use of
focus. I think the way the background
is all blurred makes the photo much
more effective because your eyes are
much less drawn to what would have
been a busy and colourful background.
As well as this I think it’s unlike a lot of
live shots of bands seen in music
magazines.
It could be used as a secondary lead or
on a contents page.
It would influence the design of the
page because it is quite a detailed
photo, however because it’s landscape
it couldn’t be used as a feature article
photo which means it’d be quite
difficult to include as it shouldn’t take
away the focus from the main photo.
This is why I think it should be used on
a contents page where it will bring
attention to the article without
actually being on it.
This photo uses a mid-range shot which I
think makes it more personal and therefore
individual from other photos of bands I’ve
seen. The rule of thirds is also used which
draws your eyes towards the focus of the
photo much more effectively. The indirect
mode of address makes it seem like a more
natural photo which displays in action shots
much better.
7.
I think this is a good photo
because it shows an “in action”
shot of a concert. I also think
the composition of the photo
works well as it focuses in on
one person – the lead singer –
making the others in the
background less noticeable. I
also like how the photo is taken
on a slant as it makes it much
more interesting compared to
how it would be normally.
I think this could be used
as the feature photo of a
contents page if the
magazine was to include
an article about a show
with this band.

This picture would
influence the design
because it’s quite
colourful and
interesting so it
would need to stand
out against the
background. This
means the area
around it would have
to be quite simple
for the picture to
stand out.
I think this photo was
taken from a lower
angle, which allows the
lead singer’s face to be
shown in the picture. I
think the use of lighting
is helpful is bringing
focus to the centre as
the lights point towards
the middle of the stage,
where the lead singer is.
As well as this, the
bright, colourful lights
make it more attention
grabbing and
interesting.
8.
I like this one because it’s
quite an unusual shot in
terms of composition and
lighting, which makes it
very interesting. I also like
how the smoke is used to
add texture to the photo
when the lights shine
through it. The guitars you
can see in the photo also
connote the genre, which
gives across the personality
of the band.
It could be used for a
double page spread as
it’s landscape and the
focus is central which
means writing can go
around it.

It would influence the
design of the page
because it’s quite dark
around the edges which
means that the writing
would have to be in white
or another bright colour to
make it stand out from the
background.
The photo uses framing by
using the people in the
crowd and the lights across
the top of the stage,
bringing focus to the
people performing. Despite
the fact this is a long shot,
the use of the “BMTH”
lights in the background
indicate who is performing,
making it more accessible
to the person viewing it.
The lighting is also quite
effective because the lights
stand out against the
background which
immediately brings focus
to the centre.

and I also think the use of
lighting and angles used make
the photo quite unique.

It would influence the
design of the page because
the colours are quite dark
and the page would have to
use dark colours too for it
to look in place.
I think that the use of
lighting is useful in this
photo because it’s lighter
where the ,ain feature of
the photo is and fades out
towards the lefts where
there’s less focus. This
photo was taken from a
lower angle which makes it
look as though it’s from the
perspective of someone in
the crowd, making the
photo feel more authentic.
The use of framing is also
quite effective around the
left and underneath of the
bassist. An indirect mode of
address is used which I think
works well for an in action
shot because it has more
emphasis on what the
person in the photo is doing
rather than them.
10.
I like this one because the use of
focus is very interesting and
makes the photo much more
aesthetically attractive as well as
making the lead singer – the focus
of the photo – stand out from the
background much more. I also like
the way there’s a lot of blue on the
right side of the photo and a lot of
red on the left because it makes it
look organised and compliments
the composition.

To create this photo I think that the
photographer used a low angled
long range shot. Framing is also
used around either side and the
bottom of the singer which helps
bring focus to them. The blurred
out background might have been
used to make the centre seem
sharper which, again, brings more
focus to the lead singer.

Here are some textures and graphics that might help me to establish the
overall look of my magazine…
12. Some of the common techniques that appear to
be used in photography for this genre include…
Using a mid to long range shot.
Framing around whoever is the focus of the
picture.
Manipulating the composition of the photo to
make it obvious who is the frontman of the band.
