Professional Development of
English Teacher
Growing professionally through- attending various training courses,
conferences, seminars,
workshops, collaboration with schools and colleges, university,
using print and internet resources,
Professional development refers to many types of educational experiences
related to an individual’s work.
Doctors, lawyers, educators, accountants, engineers, and people in a wide
variety of professions and businesses participate in professional development
to learn and apply new knowledge and skills that will improve their
performance on the job.
Many fields require members to participate in ongoing learning approved by
the profession, sometimes as a requirement for keeping their jobs.
Professionals often also voluntarily seek new learning.
In education, research has shown that teaching quality and school leadership
are the most important factors in raising student achievement. For teachers
and school and district leaders to be as effective as possible, they continually
expand their knowledge and skills to implement the best educational
practices. Educators learn to help students learn at the highest levels.
Many people may not be aware of their local school system’s methods for
improving teaching and student learning. Professional development is the only
strategy school systems have to strengthen educators’ performance levels.
Professional development is also the only way educators can learn so that they
are able to better their performance and raise student achievement.
What constitutes professional development?
When people use the term “professional development,” they usually
mean a formal process such as a conference, seminar, or workshop;
collaborative learning among members of a work team; or a course at a
college or university. However, professional development can also occur
in informal contexts such as discussions among work colleagues,
independent reading and research, observations of a colleague’s work,
or other learning from a peer.
Professional development may occur:
During the regular school day;
At school, but before classes begin or after they end;
After school on an educator’s own time;
During days a school system sets aside solely for professional
development; or
During the summer and other school breaks.
Where does professional development typically occur for educators?
Educator’s benefit most by learning in the setting where they can immediately apply
what they learn — in the school where they work. However, other professional
development may occur at:
An educator’s school district office or professional development center/school;
A third-party site such as an education service center, corporate office, or learning
center;
Another school, school system, state, or a foreign country;
A college or university (summer or evening courses, or institutes);
Local, state, or national conferences, seminars, or workshops; or
• Online.
Collaboration
What are typical modes of professional development?
Individual reading/study/research.
Study groups among peers focused on a shared need or topic.
Observation: teachers observing other teachers.
Coaching: an expert teacher coaching one or more colleagues.
Mentoring of new educators by more experienced colleagues.
Team meetings to plan lessons, problem solve, improve performance, And/or learn a new strategy.
Faculty, grade-level, or departmental meetings.
Online courses.
College/university courses.
Workshops to dig deeper into a subject.
Conferences to learn from a variety of expertise from around the state or country.
Whole-school improvement programs.
Use online professional development?
Seminar
A seminar is, generally, a form of academic instruction, either at an
academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional
organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for
recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in
which everyone present is requested to actively participate. This is
often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a
seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of
research.
Training program
A comprehensive training program might include the following:
Training for new staff who've never done this particular work before.
Training for new staff who may be experienced in the work of the
position, but not in the particular method or style which your
organization uses.
Conference
A conference is a gathering of people with a common interest or
background, with the purposes of allowing them to meet one another
and to learn about and discuss issues, ideas and work that focus on a
topic of mutual concern. The Latin roots of the word “conference”
mean, literally, “Bring together.” A conference brings together people
and ideas. In the cases of health and community work, conferences
often have the goal of generating or working toward solutions to
problems or broader social change.
Conferences may be held in places other than the workplaces and
neighborhoods of their participants, so that the people attending can
focus on the topic at hand without distractions. Some conferences are
even held in another area of the country or the world.
Collaborations
When we work together, we create a better learning experience.
Teacher collaboration positively impacts student achievement, and
allows us as educators to explore new territory.
With time, teachers can develop genuine collaborative teams in which
they share goals, engage in mutually beneficial professional learning,
use communal resources to increase student achievement, and advance
their own skills, knowledge, and beliefs related to student learning.
Reflective Practices
- helps to reflect on actions/ teaching
- provide scope for improvement
- leads to adopting of new teachnique

  • 2. Professional Development of English Teacher Growing professionally through- attending various training courses, conferences, seminars, workshops, collaboration with schools and colleges, university, using print and internet resources,
  • 3. Professional development refers to many types of educational experiences related to an individual’s work. Doctors, lawyers, educators, accountants, engineers, and people in a wide variety of professions and businesses participate in professional development to learn and apply new knowledge and skills that will improve their performance on the job. Many fields require members to participate in ongoing learning approved by the profession, sometimes as a requirement for keeping their jobs. Professionals often also voluntarily seek new learning.
  • 4. In education, research has shown that teaching quality and school leadership are the most important factors in raising student achievement. For teachers and school and district leaders to be as effective as possible, they continually expand their knowledge and skills to implement the best educational practices. Educators learn to help students learn at the highest levels. Many people may not be aware of their local school system’s methods for improving teaching and student learning. Professional development is the only strategy school systems have to strengthen educators’ performance levels. Professional development is also the only way educators can learn so that they are able to better their performance and raise student achievement.
  • 5. What constitutes professional development? When people use the term “professional development,” they usually mean a formal process such as a conference, seminar, or workshop; collaborative learning among members of a work team; or a course at a college or university. However, professional development can also occur in informal contexts such as discussions among work colleagues, independent reading and research, observations of a colleague’s work, or other learning from a peer.
  • 6. Professional development may occur: During the regular school day; At school, but before classes begin or after they end; After school on an educator’s own time; During days a school system sets aside solely for professional development; or During the summer and other school breaks.
  • 7. Where does professional development typically occur for educators? Educator’s benefit most by learning in the setting where they can immediately apply what they learn — in the school where they work. However, other professional development may occur at: An educator’s school district office or professional development center/school; A third-party site such as an education service center, corporate office, or learning center; Another school, school system, state, or a foreign country; A college or university (summer or evening courses, or institutes); Local, state, or national conferences, seminars, or workshops; or • Online. Collaboration
  • 9. Use online professional development? Seminar A seminar is, generally, a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate. This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research.
  • 10. Training program A comprehensive training program might include the following: Training for new staff who've never done this particular work before. Training for new staff who may be experienced in the work of the position, but not in the particular method or style which your organization uses.
  • 11. Conference A conference is a gathering of people with a common interest or background, with the purposes of allowing them to meet one another and to learn about and discuss issues, ideas and work that focus on a topic of mutual concern. The Latin roots of the word “conference” mean, literally, “Bring together.” A conference brings together people and ideas. In the cases of health and community work, conferences often have the goal of generating or working toward solutions to problems or broader social change. Conferences may be held in places other than the workplaces and neighborhoods of their participants, so that the people attending can focus on the topic at hand without distractions. Some conferences are even held in another area of the country or the world.
  • 12. Collaborations When we work together, we create a better learning experience. Teacher collaboration positively impacts student achievement, and allows us as educators to explore new territory. With time, teachers can develop genuine collaborative teams in which they share goals, engage in mutually beneficial professional learning, use communal resources to increase student achievement, and advance their own skills, knowledge, and beliefs related to student learning.
