Experiments
Joy Buck
To start...
My production experiments are going to be consisted of music, different voice
tracks and different ads/sponsors.
To carry out these product experiments, I will be using the program, Garage
Band. This is carried out on the iPad.
I will take screen shots of what I have done and explain them. This is the
process.
The result of this will be the Reflection. In this I will tell you what I want to
carry out to the real product and what I wouldn’t.
Music Experiments
Music Experiment 1
Process
This was music experiment number one. It consists of 2 beat sequencers,
electric piano, voice mic, electric guitar and drums. I pulled it altogether
with the effects. This was intended to be an intro/ending as it has a time of
30 seconds over 15 bars.
It has a fast tempo. This could, also, make my audience excited to listen to
my talk show.
Process
First, I started a back beat. I used
the ‘retro rock’ beat sequencer. I
thought the base of the drum
would be great for a back beat. I
made each beat about 1/8th of a
bar. This made up the fast tempo. I
wanted to experiment with tempo
because It’s been a while since I
making music with a fast tempo.
This worked well.
Process
Next, I brought in the electric piano.
I thought of adding this instrument
because it has flexibility. You use
this instrument for any kind of
music. I pressed the deepest
sounding chord on this scale, Em.
This is shown by the red arrow. I
made this electric piano arpeggiate
at a rate of 1/16. this matched the
bass sound, made earlier.
Process
Then, I have added the ‘Liverpool’
electric guitar. I wanted to add a
triplet in.
I played these in an equally timed
order, on the C chord, as seen by
the red arrows.
This sounded slower than the rest
of the music but worked well. This
adds a relaxed base to the song.
3rd
2nd
1st
Process
After, I added the other beat
sequencer in, ‘modern 808’.
I wanted to add more rhythms in. I
went with cymbals. There were 2
types. I decided to use both as they
both sounded different but
sounded well together. One
sounded more deeper than the
other. I added these in, equally
spaced, playing 1/2 a bar each.
Process
After that, I wanted to add in some
vocals. I wanted this to sound more
simpler than the whole song itself. I
recorded myself saying the ‘p’
sound once. I shortened it as there
may have been background noise.
After, I looped it to the end of the
song, as seen below. Then, I added
echo to the track making a small
echo after each ‘p’ sound.
Original loop...
Process
Finally, I added a cymbal ending.
Playing the ‘SoCal’ drum, I played
the cymbals in the directions of the
red arrows.
This was a fitting ending for the
song as it did what was intended to
for 1 bar.
Process
I defiantly took the song to a new
level when adding effects to the
whole song. This was a new addition
to my experiments as I had never
done this before.
After the 4th bar, I started to press the
purple box, slowly to the left then the
right till the end of the vocal part. As
shown by the red arrow.
This made the music, sound like it
was going under water and back up
again. I want to use this again!
Music Experiment 2
Process
This is my second music experiment. It consists of three instruments. The
electric guitar, beat sequencer and an electric piano. Like the first, this music
was intended for an intro/ending. Both songs could be shorted to fit breaks
between scenes.
This piece is less complex than the other but ranges at the same amount of
bars (15) and takes 30 seconds to play through.
It plays at a slower tempo than the first piece, but I really wanted to
experiment using simple sequences, doing this song.
For inspiration, I have researched, on YouTube, different talk show
introductions.
Linked here- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm8C5MB1yaPLx3QNG05131TOJXTkpReHO
Process
First, I wanted to create a base for
the music to go by. I created this
with the electric bass guitar,
‘Liverpool’.
I used the automatic player, circled
at the top (1). I played this on the
chord of C. This was great as I am
not an electric guitar player. It
sounds professional and upbeat. So,
it set the tone for the song.
Process
Then, I used the beat sequencer to
create an evolving beat. I started
with orange, then blue and finally
purple. This beat is the 2nd most
important to the song. I will be
using the beat sequencer in my
final product as it sounds upbeat
like the rest of the song. You can let
your creativity go crazy with this
instrument.
Process
Finally, I finished the song with the
electric piano, ‘reminisce keys’.
Different to the original electric
piano, it sounds retro and lasts long
due to the delay and reverb. I, also,
placed it on the soft setting as I
thought this song needed a softer
touch. It worked with the song. I will
continue use instrument
combinations that work well. I played
the three keys, in the order left to
right, dotted red.
Voice Experiments
Voice Experiment 1 Kim.
Process
Firstly, I recorded Kim, the first hosts
voice. I am doing these voice
experiments as I want to make up their
voices before I make the script. This is
because I want a feel of what the
character is like, though their voice. I
wanted Kim to sound confident. I said,
“oh hi I'm Kim.” into the mic. In a tone
that sounds like she knows what she is
saying, sounding confident and fast
thinking. I said this once and then
copied and pasted it into another voice
section. This was to compare which
one sounded the most like I imagined
the character. The top image sounds
the most like I imagined.
Voice Experiment 2 Lara.
Process
Then, I did the same technique with
the rest of the characters, starting with
Lara.
I wanted her character to be the
comedian, a laugh to the audience. I
spoke into the mic, “he he he, I’m
Lara.” This shows that she would be the
joke star of the hosts.
The only thing I would change about
her would be that I want to ad an
accent to her character. So, that the
audience would know she’s not from
around here.
Voice Experiment 3 Mrs Chesterfield.
Process
After, I experimented with an
accent. This was the posh, old
lady, guest, Mrs Chesterfield.
I wanted her character to sound
posh and her to be self
absorbed. I spoke into the mic,
“Hello, I’m Mrs Chesterfield.”
This was in an overly posh
accent which some of my
audience would laugh at.
Voice Experiment 1 Meybel.
Process
Finally, Meybel is the next guest. I
wanted her character to sound positive
but shy. I spoke into the mic “Hi ... I’m
... Meybel.”
This made her character sound shy
which worked well. I also think that
this character should come out of her
shell (being shy) by the end of the
interview.
Ad/Sponsor Experiment
Nursing home ad.
Process
For my last experiment, I have completed a nursing home ad. I wanted to find
a great backing track for my final ‘ad’ products. I think I will use this technique
in the final product.
I have used 2 instruments. The acoustic guitar and a voice mic. This ad lasted
6 bars and 15 seconds.
Process
Firstly, I used the automatic feature on the acoustic guitar to strum a base line
tune for the ad. This was in the chord of C on switch number 1. This is circled with
red. This sounded caring as it was soft sounding.
Then I added a few ad details. I spoke into the mic, “Would you like to take your
next steps into old age, well with Stepping Stones nursing home we will provide
accommodation for you and your carer. Just call the number”. This was spoken in
a soft monotoned voice.
For the final pieces I will be using this technique. I will find a theme and stick with
it. Starting with a base line tune.
Reflection
Reflection
For my final product, I will be including several techniques. These are
rhythmic sequences, theme picking and accents.
Firstly, the rhythmic sequences. When doing the music experiment, I liked
using rhythms to further extended and make the pieces more complex.
Additionally, they are mostly upbeat and excite the audience. This makes
them want to listen to the whole talk show.
Next, I want to include theme picking into my final piece. Theme picking is
mostly used for my ads/sponsors. You need a theme for your ads. I went with
picking a base line sound and then making your voice match. This makes the
ad aurally pleasing to listen to.
Finally, I want to include accents in my final piece. Accents make the piece
more exciting to listen to, for the audience. For example, Mrs Chesterfield’s
accent sounded over the top. This showed the kind of person she was, self
absorbed. This entertains the audience.

Production experiments - FMP

  • 2. To start... My production experiments are going to be consisted of music, different voice tracks and different ads/sponsors. To carry out these product experiments, I will be using the program, Garage Band. This is carried out on the iPad. I will take screen shots of what I have done and explain them. This is the process. The result of this will be the Reflection. In this I will tell you what I want to carry out to the real product and what I wouldn’t.
  • 5. Process This was music experiment number one. It consists of 2 beat sequencers, electric piano, voice mic, electric guitar and drums. I pulled it altogether with the effects. This was intended to be an intro/ending as it has a time of 30 seconds over 15 bars. It has a fast tempo. This could, also, make my audience excited to listen to my talk show.
  • 6. Process First, I started a back beat. I used the ‘retro rock’ beat sequencer. I thought the base of the drum would be great for a back beat. I made each beat about 1/8th of a bar. This made up the fast tempo. I wanted to experiment with tempo because It’s been a while since I making music with a fast tempo. This worked well.
  • 7. Process Next, I brought in the electric piano. I thought of adding this instrument because it has flexibility. You use this instrument for any kind of music. I pressed the deepest sounding chord on this scale, Em. This is shown by the red arrow. I made this electric piano arpeggiate at a rate of 1/16. this matched the bass sound, made earlier.
  • 8. Process Then, I have added the ‘Liverpool’ electric guitar. I wanted to add a triplet in. I played these in an equally timed order, on the C chord, as seen by the red arrows. This sounded slower than the rest of the music but worked well. This adds a relaxed base to the song. 3rd 2nd 1st
  • 9. Process After, I added the other beat sequencer in, ‘modern 808’. I wanted to add more rhythms in. I went with cymbals. There were 2 types. I decided to use both as they both sounded different but sounded well together. One sounded more deeper than the other. I added these in, equally spaced, playing 1/2 a bar each.
  • 10. Process After that, I wanted to add in some vocals. I wanted this to sound more simpler than the whole song itself. I recorded myself saying the ‘p’ sound once. I shortened it as there may have been background noise. After, I looped it to the end of the song, as seen below. Then, I added echo to the track making a small echo after each ‘p’ sound. Original loop...
  • 11. Process Finally, I added a cymbal ending. Playing the ‘SoCal’ drum, I played the cymbals in the directions of the red arrows. This was a fitting ending for the song as it did what was intended to for 1 bar.
  • 12. Process I defiantly took the song to a new level when adding effects to the whole song. This was a new addition to my experiments as I had never done this before. After the 4th bar, I started to press the purple box, slowly to the left then the right till the end of the vocal part. As shown by the red arrow. This made the music, sound like it was going under water and back up again. I want to use this again!
  • 14. Process This is my second music experiment. It consists of three instruments. The electric guitar, beat sequencer and an electric piano. Like the first, this music was intended for an intro/ending. Both songs could be shorted to fit breaks between scenes. This piece is less complex than the other but ranges at the same amount of bars (15) and takes 30 seconds to play through. It plays at a slower tempo than the first piece, but I really wanted to experiment using simple sequences, doing this song. For inspiration, I have researched, on YouTube, different talk show introductions. Linked here- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLm8C5MB1yaPLx3QNG05131TOJXTkpReHO
  • 15. Process First, I wanted to create a base for the music to go by. I created this with the electric bass guitar, ‘Liverpool’. I used the automatic player, circled at the top (1). I played this on the chord of C. This was great as I am not an electric guitar player. It sounds professional and upbeat. So, it set the tone for the song.
  • 16. Process Then, I used the beat sequencer to create an evolving beat. I started with orange, then blue and finally purple. This beat is the 2nd most important to the song. I will be using the beat sequencer in my final product as it sounds upbeat like the rest of the song. You can let your creativity go crazy with this instrument.
  • 17. Process Finally, I finished the song with the electric piano, ‘reminisce keys’. Different to the original electric piano, it sounds retro and lasts long due to the delay and reverb. I, also, placed it on the soft setting as I thought this song needed a softer touch. It worked with the song. I will continue use instrument combinations that work well. I played the three keys, in the order left to right, dotted red.
  • 20. Process Firstly, I recorded Kim, the first hosts voice. I am doing these voice experiments as I want to make up their voices before I make the script. This is because I want a feel of what the character is like, though their voice. I wanted Kim to sound confident. I said, “oh hi I'm Kim.” into the mic. In a tone that sounds like she knows what she is saying, sounding confident and fast thinking. I said this once and then copied and pasted it into another voice section. This was to compare which one sounded the most like I imagined the character. The top image sounds the most like I imagined.
  • 22. Process Then, I did the same technique with the rest of the characters, starting with Lara. I wanted her character to be the comedian, a laugh to the audience. I spoke into the mic, “he he he, I’m Lara.” This shows that she would be the joke star of the hosts. The only thing I would change about her would be that I want to ad an accent to her character. So, that the audience would know she’s not from around here.
  • 23. Voice Experiment 3 Mrs Chesterfield.
  • 24. Process After, I experimented with an accent. This was the posh, old lady, guest, Mrs Chesterfield. I wanted her character to sound posh and her to be self absorbed. I spoke into the mic, “Hello, I’m Mrs Chesterfield.” This was in an overly posh accent which some of my audience would laugh at.
  • 26. Process Finally, Meybel is the next guest. I wanted her character to sound positive but shy. I spoke into the mic “Hi ... I’m ... Meybel.” This made her character sound shy which worked well. I also think that this character should come out of her shell (being shy) by the end of the interview.
  • 29. Process For my last experiment, I have completed a nursing home ad. I wanted to find a great backing track for my final ‘ad’ products. I think I will use this technique in the final product. I have used 2 instruments. The acoustic guitar and a voice mic. This ad lasted 6 bars and 15 seconds.
  • 30. Process Firstly, I used the automatic feature on the acoustic guitar to strum a base line tune for the ad. This was in the chord of C on switch number 1. This is circled with red. This sounded caring as it was soft sounding. Then I added a few ad details. I spoke into the mic, “Would you like to take your next steps into old age, well with Stepping Stones nursing home we will provide accommodation for you and your carer. Just call the number”. This was spoken in a soft monotoned voice. For the final pieces I will be using this technique. I will find a theme and stick with it. Starting with a base line tune.
  • 32. Reflection For my final product, I will be including several techniques. These are rhythmic sequences, theme picking and accents. Firstly, the rhythmic sequences. When doing the music experiment, I liked using rhythms to further extended and make the pieces more complex. Additionally, they are mostly upbeat and excite the audience. This makes them want to listen to the whole talk show. Next, I want to include theme picking into my final piece. Theme picking is mostly used for my ads/sponsors. You need a theme for your ads. I went with picking a base line sound and then making your voice match. This makes the ad aurally pleasing to listen to. Finally, I want to include accents in my final piece. Accents make the piece more exciting to listen to, for the audience. For example, Mrs Chesterfield’s accent sounded over the top. This showed the kind of person she was, self absorbed. This entertains the audience.
