Process
I started off by looking for a leaflet for
guest houses. The image above gave me
inspiration and ideas for what to do for my
experiment.
On the image at the top, the ’about us’ section I have placed
four boxes which is the Rectangle Tool Frame that will allow the
image to be placed straight into the box.
I believe that it went well as
I had researched enough
about leaflets for
businesses to know what
headlines to use for it to a
useful leaflet for customers.
This is relevant to my project as
I am going to be producing a
leaflet.
I haven’t produced a leaflet
previously so this has been
quite interesting to make one
and get it printed out to see
what it looks like.
Throughout this experiment I have learnt
to make sure I have the guidelines on as
they helped loads. Another thing that I
have learnt is how to set up the layout.
I used InDesign to try out my leaflet and to see if it would work
out. I used the guidelines so then it would direct where to put the
text and the images.

I printed out the leaflet from the first page. At the start of this experiment, I wasn’t sure whether to use InDesign or
Photoshop. I decided to use InDesign as it was easier to set out. It worked out quite well.
I used a map of Harrogate from Google, however it was very blurry so for the next time I need to either make my own
map or find a less blurry image. To keep my work consistent I’m using the same tree which appears on the front page
of the leaflet but was blurry so I think I’m going to put it in the corner, small.
Also, I used the Facebook and Instagram logo which turned out non-blurry which was good because it resulted in the
logos not being blurry when they got printed out. For the inside of the leaflet, I had to research things to do in
Harrogate. When it came to the prices for the rooms, I had to look on the Ash Grove Guest House’s website and
viewed the rooms.
As I wanted the leaflet to be back to back, I needed to send it through to my tutor to get printed. We got it printed out in
two versions of the leaflet because we didn’t know which way was the right way. The first way we tried was the long
edge and the second was the short edge. Out of both of them we both found out that the short edge worked best.
As you can see from the images on the slide above that this way is the short edge.
On the next slide is the long edge.
Producing this leaflet and printing it out was very relevant and useful because it helped to know the layout of the leaflet.
On the leaflet, I decided to annotate it to show where the images should be placed or where the text needed to be
instead. Some of the text and images weren’t central so next time, I will need to sort out the guidelines so it’ll make it
more central.
From this experiment I have learnt a lot of things that will come in useful for when I actually
produce my leaflet. Such as how to make my layout better.

This is this leaflet that was printed out on the long edge.
The relevance for this was to find out which way was the right way
to be printed out which now I have learnt.
Reflection
What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
 Producing and then printing this leaflet was very interesting to make but at the same time
really helpful that I did this so then I could see what it's going to look like.
 There are going to be a lot of things I'm taking from this experiment for my final product.
Some elements that I will be including is the layout. I'm going to be keeping the layout
exactly the same because I think it works better this way and still looks good.
 Another part of this experiment I'm going to take is the colour scheme I have used. As the
client's business is green, I'm going to keep the colour scheme green. This way, it will
always link back to the business.
 One key part to producing the leaflet is I'm going to use InDesign. If I need to edit any
images then I will use Photoshop and import the images through.
 I will be using similar images to ones I have used for the experiment. But for the final
product I will need to find less blurry images so the audience can see them properly.

When I taking these images, I wasn't too sure what to do or where to stand or if the lights in the
room should be on or not. However, I took these images around the house for the experiments.
I will be going back to the client's business to take some more images. I did not use a college
camera for this, I used my phone and I think it is safe to say that the images came out really well
and not blurry.
I decided to take some photos of the rooms at my client’s business. The images at the top are of
the double room which has just been redecorated recently.
The relevance this has to my final product is these images are going to be used for the social
media posts, the poster or the leaflet.
I think taking these images went really well because I tested out different angles in the room to see
where looked best.

I found this magazine at the client’s business and asked if I could borrow it to see if there was
anything that could help. Most of the magazine was articles about different hotel owners etc.
There was a few pages which were relevant to my work. They were photographs of a hotel.
This is relevant to my work as it showed me what kind of images I should be taking and how. I
looked at the different angles the photographer had taken these images. It is more relevant
because I will be taking photographs of my client’s business.
I have learnt how to position myself and I now know if the lights should be o in the room or
whether just to use natural light. The best way is to just use natural light as any additional light will
create shadows on the walls and it attracts the audience’s eye straight to the light.
I have used the magazine ‘hotelowner’ apart of my experiment. Apart from the magazine not
having as much information as I had hoped, I think this experiment went well.

What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
 After finishing my second experiment I have now thought about what I wanted to
include in my final product. As this experiment was taking photographs of my client’s
business I know have knowledge of what to do and how to position myself within
the room.
 I will be including some props as part of my final product to make the room look
more attractive than it is now. Props such as a pile of newspaper, flowers, stack of
books etc.
 I will make sure that I only use natural light rather than side lamps or the torch on
my phone. This will improve the image by not having any shadows going on in the
image.

To show that I had taken action on my previous work, I went onto YouTube to see if there was
any videos on how o take photos of rooms. I thought this might be a good way to see as a
visual person.
I didn’t know if that was all the help and tips that were out there so I researched ‘how to take
photos of rooms’. I looked at a website and copied and pasted the key points on how to take a
photo of a room. This was to make sure that the ideas were along the same lines as the video.
They both went well as my next experiment was another action taken on after watching the
video and reading the article.
I have learnt about where to stand in the room for the image to look good. Also, I have learnt
how to organise the room with props and how to get creative.
This is relevant to my final product as I will be taking photographs of the client’s business. This
is how I’m going to be promoting the business.
Reflection
What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
 I’m going to take the ideas of how to create a good atmosphere a room and how to
add props and more character to the room. By this I’m going to use different angles
and heights which are going to help capture the furniture and the objects in the room
more.
 As I’m taking photos of the rooms I will need to know what to do with myself so after
researching I feel I am more able to take photos of the rooms. If anything does go
wrong though, I have easy access to my client’s business so I am able to go back
and take more images, if needed.
 The good thing with copying and pasting the tips is I can keep looking back at them if
I get stuck or I don’t know what I need to do. Hopefully, I won’t need to keep looking
at these but if I get stuck then this is my back up.

As I said in the last process about taking action. I have taken action on the previous
experiment. I decided to take some more images around college to show that I had learnt
something from the past research. This time I used the camera which last time I used my
phone so the photographs will be different.
This is relevant to my final product as I will need to make sure the images I take are
appropriate and professional as I will be using them for social media and other aspects for my
client’s business.
I have learnt that there is going to a difference when I face the camera towards the window
compared to other side of the room. This is why I left the room and went into the atrium where
it is big and full of light to take images.
I believe this experiment went alright as it me something about using the camera. However, I
should have used my phone as well to see which is better to use when it comes to taking
images for my client.

Production Experiments

  • 2. Process I started off by looking for a leaflet for guest houses. The image above gave me inspiration and ideas for what to do for my experiment. On the image at the top, the ’about us’ section I have placed four boxes which is the Rectangle Tool Frame that will allow the image to be placed straight into the box. I believe that it went well as I had researched enough about leaflets for businesses to know what headlines to use for it to a useful leaflet for customers. This is relevant to my project as I am going to be producing a leaflet. I haven’t produced a leaflet previously so this has been quite interesting to make one and get it printed out to see what it looks like. Throughout this experiment I have learnt to make sure I have the guidelines on as they helped loads. Another thing that I have learnt is how to set up the layout. I used InDesign to try out my leaflet and to see if it would work out. I used the guidelines so then it would direct where to put the text and the images.
  • 4. Process I printed out the leaflet from the first page. At the start of this experiment, I wasn’t sure whether to use InDesign or Photoshop. I decided to use InDesign as it was easier to set out. It worked out quite well. I used a map of Harrogate from Google, however it was very blurry so for the next time I need to either make my own map or find a less blurry image. To keep my work consistent I’m using the same tree which appears on the front page of the leaflet but was blurry so I think I’m going to put it in the corner, small. Also, I used the Facebook and Instagram logo which turned out non-blurry which was good because it resulted in the logos not being blurry when they got printed out. For the inside of the leaflet, I had to research things to do in Harrogate. When it came to the prices for the rooms, I had to look on the Ash Grove Guest House’s website and viewed the rooms. As I wanted the leaflet to be back to back, I needed to send it through to my tutor to get printed. We got it printed out in two versions of the leaflet because we didn’t know which way was the right way. The first way we tried was the long edge and the second was the short edge. Out of both of them we both found out that the short edge worked best. As you can see from the images on the slide above that this way is the short edge. On the next slide is the long edge. Producing this leaflet and printing it out was very relevant and useful because it helped to know the layout of the leaflet. On the leaflet, I decided to annotate it to show where the images should be placed or where the text needed to be instead. Some of the text and images weren’t central so next time, I will need to sort out the guidelines so it’ll make it more central. From this experiment I have learnt a lot of things that will come in useful for when I actually produce my leaflet. Such as how to make my layout better.
  • 5. Process This is this leaflet that was printed out on the long edge. The relevance for this was to find out which way was the right way to be printed out which now I have learnt.
  • 6. Reflection What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  Producing and then printing this leaflet was very interesting to make but at the same time really helpful that I did this so then I could see what it's going to look like.  There are going to be a lot of things I'm taking from this experiment for my final product. Some elements that I will be including is the layout. I'm going to be keeping the layout exactly the same because I think it works better this way and still looks good.  Another part of this experiment I'm going to take is the colour scheme I have used. As the client's business is green, I'm going to keep the colour scheme green. This way, it will always link back to the business.  One key part to producing the leaflet is I'm going to use InDesign. If I need to edit any images then I will use Photoshop and import the images through.  I will be using similar images to ones I have used for the experiment. But for the final product I will need to find less blurry images so the audience can see them properly.
  • 8. When I taking these images, I wasn't too sure what to do or where to stand or if the lights in the room should be on or not. However, I took these images around the house for the experiments. I will be going back to the client's business to take some more images. I did not use a college camera for this, I used my phone and I think it is safe to say that the images came out really well and not blurry. I decided to take some photos of the rooms at my client’s business. The images at the top are of the double room which has just been redecorated recently. The relevance this has to my final product is these images are going to be used for the social media posts, the poster or the leaflet. I think taking these images went really well because I tested out different angles in the room to see where looked best. Process
  • 12. I found this magazine at the client’s business and asked if I could borrow it to see if there was anything that could help. Most of the magazine was articles about different hotel owners etc. There was a few pages which were relevant to my work. They were photographs of a hotel. This is relevant to my work as it showed me what kind of images I should be taking and how. I looked at the different angles the photographer had taken these images. It is more relevant because I will be taking photographs of my client’s business. I have learnt how to position myself and I now know if the lights should be o in the room or whether just to use natural light. The best way is to just use natural light as any additional light will create shadows on the walls and it attracts the audience’s eye straight to the light. I have used the magazine ‘hotelowner’ apart of my experiment. Apart from the magazine not having as much information as I had hoped, I think this experiment went well. Process
  • 13. Reflection What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  After finishing my second experiment I have now thought about what I wanted to include in my final product. As this experiment was taking photographs of my client’s business I know have knowledge of what to do and how to position myself within the room.  I will be including some props as part of my final product to make the room look more attractive than it is now. Props such as a pile of newspaper, flowers, stack of books etc.  I will make sure that I only use natural light rather than side lamps or the torch on my phone. This will improve the image by not having any shadows going on in the image.

  • 16. Process To show that I had taken action on my previous work, I went onto YouTube to see if there was any videos on how o take photos of rooms. I thought this might be a good way to see as a visual person. I didn’t know if that was all the help and tips that were out there so I researched ‘how to take photos of rooms’. I looked at a website and copied and pasted the key points on how to take a photo of a room. This was to make sure that the ideas were along the same lines as the video. They both went well as my next experiment was another action taken on after watching the video and reading the article. I have learnt about where to stand in the room for the image to look good. Also, I have learnt how to organise the room with props and how to get creative. This is relevant to my final product as I will be taking photographs of the client’s business. This is how I’m going to be promoting the business.
  • 17. Reflection What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?  I’m going to take the ideas of how to create a good atmosphere a room and how to add props and more character to the room. By this I’m going to use different angles and heights which are going to help capture the furniture and the objects in the room more.  As I’m taking photos of the rooms I will need to know what to do with myself so after researching I feel I am more able to take photos of the rooms. If anything does go wrong though, I have easy access to my client’s business so I am able to go back and take more images, if needed.  The good thing with copying and pasting the tips is I can keep looking back at them if I get stuck or I don’t know what I need to do. Hopefully, I won’t need to keep looking at these but if I get stuck then this is my back up.
  • 21. Process As I said in the last process about taking action. I have taken action on the previous experiment. I decided to take some more images around college to show that I had learnt something from the past research. This time I used the camera which last time I used my phone so the photographs will be different. This is relevant to my final product as I will need to make sure the images I take are appropriate and professional as I will be using them for social media and other aspects for my client’s business. I have learnt that there is going to a difference when I face the camera towards the window compared to other side of the room. This is why I left the room and went into the atrium where it is big and full of light to take images. I believe this experiment went alright as it me something about using the camera. However, I should have used my phone as well to see which is better to use when it comes to taking images for my client.
