Simran organized a photo shoot with Rachel as a model for her upcoming music project. Simran used fluorescent lights to evenly light the studio and avoid shadows. She took different types of shots, including close-ups of Rachel's makeup and accessories as well as wider shots showing her full outfit and pose. Simran edited the photos, adjusting brightness, saturation, and other qualities. She created a photography portfolio using some of the edited photos and titled it "Wilderness Photo Shoot by Sim K" to connect it to Rachel's new album. Simran interviewed Rachel, asking questions about her life and career, and included the responses in an article for her magazine.
2. Process
I organised a photo shoot and Rachel to be my model as she
is an upcoming female artist for her own project.
In the studio, I had all the fluorescent light panels on so then
it would equal out the light in the room. I did this because it
means that there would be no shadows in the back of the
photos.
I took different angled shots, e.g. close ups and wide shots. I
did the close ups so I could capture her makeup and her
accessories and the wide shots were for what she was
wearing and the pose/position she was in. This will show her
personality. However, as you can see from the images on my
contact sheet I have taken, are mostly close ups. I made sure
there were enough close ups because I needed an image for
my front cover but I wasn’t too sure on what kind. I wasn’t
sure what kind of look I was going for either. This is why I
took different ones.
As my audience is 16+, these images would appeal to them
because they like bold and vibrant portraits and landscapes.
Also, from my survey, I asked the question ‘Do you buy
magazines if the front cover is interesting?’. From that, my
response was ‘Yes’, so I had to make sure the photos were
interesting enough for my audience to pick it up.
3. Process
Thoughts & Feelings:
Throughout the photo shoot, I really enjoyed being a photographer. When I was in the
studio with all the lights on, it makes you feel like a different person all together. I was
mostly thinking about if I was doing this right as I had never used the studio setup
before. Other thoughts were this is fun and I enjoyed my experience.
Time Management:
I had enough time for this photoshoot. I booked the studio a week before so then I
could prepare. This came in handy, because it meant that I could finish off my work
before starting my project. It was a good thing, for me to start the photo shoot first as
I needed the images for the whole project. For example, the front cover, the double
page spread and the photography portfolio. I made sure that took enough images so
then I could choose different ones for different products. It took myself and Rachel, 2
hours as Rachel had to get changed.
4. Process
At the start of my production for my front cover, I had put guidelines in so
then I knew where to place text. I had to transform the main image for it to fit
on the A4 canvas.
I have changed the magazine cover because I wasn’t pleased with it because I
wasn’t sure about the layout. The subheading in purple had to be resized so
then the text underneath the 18 was lined up (see bottom image). The feature
headline was transformed counter clockwise in photoshop by a few degrees
so then you could see that it was a main feature on the main image.
I have used the font ‘Gill Sans Ultra B’ for the whole of the text and for the
bottom on the menu strip, I have used the font ‘Aparajita’.
I have made the masthead bold and ‘stand out’ so then my audience will pick
it up and think ‘this looks good’.
The feature headline clearly shows who the artist is and what she is called. I
have shown this, by putting a quote from her interview on the front page.
From my survey, I asked the question ‘Do you buy magazines if the front cover
is interesting?’. The response I got from that was ‘Yes’. So I have made my
magazine cover interesting enough so my audience will not overlook it.
However, I put the question ‘Do you read the cover page first?’ and the
response I got from that was ‘No’.
This is a clear contradiction however, it helped me work out what I needed to
do to please my audience so then they would look at the front cover without
skipping to the article. I put a rectangle box at the bottom of the page/cover
and made it slightly transparent and then added text on top.
5. Process
Thoughts & Feelings:
When I started to do my front cover magazine, I felt confused and frustrated when I
was picking out a main image. I didn’t know which image to use and I kept changing it
all the time because I just felt like it didn’t look right. Then, there was the masthead
which annoyed me because it didn’t match in with the main image. I thought that it
would take me longer as I was stressed out a bit about the magazine because I kept
thinking that I’ve got to keep to the deadline.
Time Management:
As I had done this before, I knew how long to spend on it without taking too long on it
but still have enough time for it to be good. It did take me longer however, I did stick
to my deadline. It took me about 4 days for the front cover and double page spread.
With the problem said above in thoughts and feelings with the images, I overcame this
problem by trying different images and seeing what looks right and better than the
other image.
6. Process
I use the brush tool on size 5000 and used four
different colours for the background. For this, I have
used summery colours. I wasn’t too sure on what
image to use because I hadn’t taken a proper photo
that would fit into the double page spread. I used this
image and cropped Rachel’s body to a close up out so
then the title and text would fit in properly. As there
was a lot of space on this page, I had to make the title
bigger and transform to tilt the name so it looks like
Rachel is looking up at her name. I lined the questions
up so they wouldn’t look odd or out of place. I made
sure that the text near her head went with her hair
line otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see it properly. I
know my audience will like the double page spread
because I have made the questions and the responses
interesting. I have them interesting by researching
different questions and asking different people if they
like them kind of questions and if not I changed it. I
have put a big ‘I’ at the beginning of the first
paragraph, this is called drop caps. For the masthead I
used the colour picker for the different colour choices,
by this I was using mise-en-scene.
7. Process
Thoughts & Feelings:
After, the front cover I did the double page spread, I felt like this went well. I had
difficulty picking an image again but when I chose one everything else just fit in.
Throughout this product I kept thinking about the colour scheme. I knew I was going
to use the colours from the front cover so it didn’t seem odd. I felt good as I had
already done the interview questions and had already got the answers beforehand.
Time Management:
It took me about 4 days for the front cover and double page spread. This was part of
my schedule, this meant I knew my time limit on how long I should be spending on it.
As I had the problem of not knowing what image to use, it set me back slightly.
However, the images I had were already edited so I didn’t have to do anything to them
when putting it on the page. I overcame this by trying different images and having all
my text already on he page so I could shuffle them around.
8. Process
For my first article, I decided to write the questions
from the interview down on a Word Document. So
then I could change the responses if needed. I asked
10 questions about the artist’s life. This is the
content for my magazine. This made it easier for me
to put into Photoshop, because I just copied and
pasted it and edited it in Photoshop. I think my
audience would like this interview because it can
help my audience if they are thinking of a career in
the music industry.
I, even, did an audio interview, asking the same
questions and got a different response. I edited the
audio in Audition because there was a lot of doors
shutting and opening, I did this by using the razor
tool to select the specific noises I wanted to remove
and deleting them. I also edited the ‘erms’ out so it
seemed more professional in the same way. My
audience will like the audio interview because it
shows the emotions from the artist through the
dialogue and how hard she went through bullying at
school. It could help those out there who are getting
bullied to listen to her songs or interviews as my
target audience is 16+.
9. Process
Thoughts & Feelings:
I felt that the audio interview helped with the article as it gave me some help on what
to write or add. Some of my thoughts were that I didn’t really know what kind of
questions to ask, so I researched some to see what kind of questions are suitable.
Overall, I felt it went well because the content of my article gave me inspiration for my
cover lines and helped me decide on the images to use which would be suitable.
Time Management:
I made sure that I balanced my time between college and home so then I had enough
time to spend on making sure each product was of the highest quality. I had prepared
the questions at college, this allowed me extra time to put the article together.
10. Process
This is my photography portfolio. After I
had done the photo shoot, I edited some
of the main images. So I changed the
brightness, the saturation, the vibrancy of
certain areas of the image through the
image adjustments. I did this because the
raw image had high contrast lighting and
the white balance wasn’t adjusted so she
appeared too pale. As I have used Portfolio
Box before for another project, I knew
what to do. I went for a scroll down setting
so it really shows the effects and the
editing on the image. I called my portfolio:
‘Wilderness Photo Shoot by Sim K’ as
Wilderness is the title of her new album
and the audience would link the artist to
the portfolio through the title.
11. Process
Thoughts & Feelings:
I hadn’t done a photo shoot before, so I felt quite unsure and nervous about how the
end product would look like and the setup of the studio or even if there too much
lighting. After I had done the editing, I kept those images so I could use them for other
products. This made me feel relieved because it meant that I didn't have to edit
anymore images and I saved time.
Time Management:
As I had done the photo shoot in between timetabled classes I was able to edit them
straight away in class. I had used Portfolio Box before so I knew how to use it, this
meant that there was no delay. I had no problems to overcome because I had extra
time it gave me chance to sort out the layout and colour scheme.
