The document describes experiments conducted to learn editing techniques for a video project comparing scenes from Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz. Effects tested include split screens, slow motion, rewind, adding text, and transitions. The rewind effect emulating a VHS glitch worked well. Transitions between jumping scenes flowed smoothly. Higher quality footage and text positioning need improvement. Not all experiments may be included in the final project.

2. Split screen effect
In my video I plan on doing a comparison between
scenes and I want to show them both at the same time,
to do this I imported the clips I wanted to use for the
scene and I had to add the crop effect on both of my
videos as well as layering them on top of each other. The
crop effect helps resize the video so they’re both the
same size as each other, it also makes room so both
videos can be seen at once on the same screen.
When it came to cropping the video I had to make sure I
cropped them both so you could still see what the main
character was doing. I struggled trying to fit everything in
both clips so I had to enlarge the screen, I then had to
make sure when the videos are side by side that they were
level with each other and shared the same amount of
space on the screen. The main aspect I spent time on
while making this was position the two videos together.
The scenes I have chosen for my experiment I plan on using in
my actual video, I have chosen the bonnet slide from the foot
chase in Baby Driver and the bonnet slide from the foot chase
in Hot Fuzz. I chose to compare these scenes because both
the movies are made from the same director and you can see
the similarities in a side by side comparison. When it comes to
actually doing this in my project I need to find a better quality
video from the Baby Driver scene as the one I used in this was
quite low quality compared to Hot Fuzz and it looks very
blurred and pixilated.

3. Split screen effect
In my project I planned on using slow motion a lot for my
scenes as I’m analyzing what’s happening it will be helpful
fro the viewer if I slowed the scene down for them. I
wanted to see how slow motion would look in a side by
side comparison, I think it would work if I timed the two
scenes perfectly in sync with each other such as when they
start to jump over the car, I struggled to do this especially
with the Baby Drive footage being not the best of quality, I
tried to get them both in sync with each other in slow
motion and it didn’t come out as good as I hoped so when
I do my actual project I’ll make sure to get it right.
I wanted to try an effect in my project where the video
rewinds itself, this experiment doing the split screen in
reverse isn’t exactly what I had in mind. I thought it would be
a good idea when I’m narrating and talking over the scene I
could show the two scenes at normal speed, then I could
reverse it back and then do it in slow motion. I thought
doing this would help the audience as they could then
clearly see the differences between the two scenes and I
think the rewind effect would visually look good in my
project.

4. Rewind effect
For my next experiment I tried to do a rewind effect on a chase
scene from Baby driver. I thought it would be a cool effect to
have in my project as when I’m talking about the scene and want
to re watch it I can just apply that effect to it. The rewind effect I
have done for my experiment is more of a VHS glitch style
rewind, which I think worked well with the scene I have chosen.
At first I played the scene normally then I duplicated the scene
and sped it up to 250% in reverse. I then duplicated the scene
again and played it through normally at the end.
To add the glitch VHS effect I added a black video and placed it
on top of my video, I then added the noise effect to it as well as
Wave warp, this made the video go blurry as well as making it
glitch with blurred lines running through it. I then duplicated the
black video and put it on top of the other one and I changed the
wave warp to smoother noise which made the video a lot
smoother when it went in reverse and sold the VHS effect a lot
more.
To make the effect more believable I added the word
REW<< which is usually seen when you rewind a VHS tape, I
tried to download the VCR font which makes it look like the
actual font used when it rewinds but it wouldn’t download
properly, Instead I tried to find a similar font to it and I
added it to the corner of the screen. When it comes to
actually doing this I’m going to try and include the actual
VHS font.

5. Adding text to video
For my next experiment I practiced adding text to video,
because I’m doing an analysis video I will be adding quite
a bit of text to it so I wanted to test out different fonts
and how the text would transition onto the video. I don’t
want my whole video to be full of text, so I would only
include text where necessary as it could overwhelm the
audience with too much writing. I also need to judge how
long the text is on for, because if it goes on and then
comes off too fast it would be difficult to read it all and I
don’t want it to stay on for too long either so I need to
cut it at an appropriate time.
When my text appears on my video I didn’t want it all to appear at
once so I applied the addictive dissolve transition and I typed out each
point separately. This made the writing fade in on the screen and it
gives the viewer more time to read it all as well. When it comes to
doing it in my project I will try and position the text much better on
the video, in my experiment some of the writing went onto the
characters face, I would of preferred for it to be more in the
background as it would look better because it doesn’t really fit well
when it goes onto an object that is moving.

6. Transitions
For my final experiment I took the baby driver foot chase
scene and cut it up into sections where the character
was jumping over something. I then tried to match the
scenes together so it transitions when he’s jumping over
it will go onto the next scene where he’s jumping over
something else. So it would feel like the scenes are
supposed to follow up from each other.
To make the transitions seem smooth I had to cut at the end
of the scene when he’s about to land and add the next scene
where he’s about to land in that scene. I tried to make it look
like he was landing in the next scene, some of the clips I used
didn't really match up as well as I hoped but I still thought it
was a nice transition. I did these transitions because in my
project I want to make it enjoyable to watch and these quick
transitions from one scene to another I think would make the
video enjoyable and engage the viewer more.

7. Title
I wanted to try and do a title card sort of experiment that
would introduce what is being discussed in my video. In
my experiment I went on photo shop and blurred the
image so it looked like you were looking at it through a
blurred camera lens. I then placed the image in my
premier timeline and added the title, the title is the main
focus in the picture so I didn’t blur it I thought that the
Baby Driver background being blurred would be a nice
effect as the focus is then on the title instead of the
background.
When I do my project I plan on doing some of these title
clips as it helps the audience know what I’m about to talk
about and it will help me organize my video in different
sections so when I talk about one topic ad move onto
another the title will be the thing that will break it all up.

8. What went well?
- I think all of my experiments went well, they have helped me prepare for when I make my project as I’ve
gotten used to using premiere again as well learning new techniques to use when it comes to editing my
video.
- My favorite experiment that I have done and what I think would look good in my video is the rewind effect.
Making it VHS style I thought worked really well and it wasn’t as tricky as I thought it would be to make that
effect, so when I do apply it to my actual video it won’t take too much time to do.
- I also think that my transitions between videos went okay as well, my favorite transition which I thought went
the smoothest was the clip when he’s running and jumping over the wall and then he lands on the escalator.
I tried to do a similar thing with my other clips but I don’t think they worked they as well as the first.
What could be improved?
- I think I could improve on my split screen video effect, I needed a higher quality video for Baby Driver when
I was comparing it to Hot Fuzz it was very blurred and it was hard to see what was happening. I also need
to work on my positioning in that video as well as I have to cut parts of the 2 videos out so it will fit on the
same screen.
- I also need to figure out how I’m going to present my text on the screen as well, I did change it in my
experiment, at first it included all 3 points at once on the video then I went back and changed it so it was
showing one at a time.
- In my video I think I’m only going to include a few of these experiments because some I don’t think would
fit or work well in my video. I don’t think I’m going to use the split screen rewind because it’s a bit pointless
when I’m doing the VHS rewind and I don’t think I would really use it in my experiment
