A proctoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the anus, rectum, and sigmoid colon performed using a proctoscope. During the procedure, a lubricated proctoscope is inserted into the anus to allow the doctor to visually examine the internal tissues. Air may be used to expand the colon and improve visibility. Biopsies can also be taken using small tools passed through the proctoscope. Proctoscopies are generally well-tolerated and take around 10 minutes to complete. They are used to investigate issues like rectal bleeding, abnormal bowel movements, suspected cancers or other growths, ulcers, and more.
