Ophthalmic prisms are used to correct vision issues. A prism is defined by two plane surfaces that meet at an angle called the refracting or apical angle. Light passing through a prism is deviated towards the base, causing objects to appear displaced towards the apex. The power of a prism can be measured in prism diopters, with 1 prism diopter producing 1cm of apparent displacement of an object 1m away. Prisms form an erect, virtual image that is displaced towards the apex. They are oriented based on the position of the base as in, base up, down, in or out.
