Zoning
Simply put, zoning, in a planning or land use context, is the classification of the land in a community
into districts with different regulations for its utilization. Zoning and other methods of land use control
have evolved with the primary objectives of promoting the health, safety, and wellbeing of residents
while minimizing the negative impacts of one activity or use upon others. Zoning is effectively a
legislative process whereby a community prioritizes values associated with land, development, and
associated activities. A zoning system generally includes map or plan elements which define areas
where like regulations apply, and a textual, usually relatively locally legislated ordinance, code, or law
consisting of definitions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The final general type of zoning regulation limits the physical and spatial form of development.
Examples of this type include restrictions on building heights, setbacks, road widths, building
materials, and architectural style.
In the first third of the 20th century, the United States saw zoning become an accepted tool in land use
regulation. New York City passed a zoning plan in 1916. This set of rules primarily focused on
building form and setbacks, and included a now routine provision for variances. The New York law
was primarily a response to a technological innovation the skyscraper and the arising concerns
associated with it.
Many States adopted the Standard State Zoning Enabling Acts of 1922, which was offered as a model
by the U.S. Department of Commerce and provided a framework and codified a general legal basis for
zoning across the country. The Department of Commerce also introduced a Standard City Planning
Enabling Act, which was widely adopted beginning in 1928. These acts put into place the general
structure of local and regional planning and zoning which is still used today. Elements and entities
such as the Planning Commission, the Master Plan, subdivision control measures, and provision for
regional planning bodies and plans were primarily introduced by the Standard City Planning Enabling
Act.

Textual Analysis Of Komgi
Given Komugi s character design and overall purpose in the anime in addition to the mental and
language representations addressed previously, Komugi has many connotations placed upon her. Her
character continues to reinforce that unusual embodiments are inherently inferior (Garland Thomson,
7), because both herself and the ways others treat her continue to emphasize that she is not worth
much of anything aside from her Gungi skills. However, Komugi is also a significant source for
intersectionality. Utilizing feminist theory, individuals can see that she is already depicted as weaker,
which could be assumed that this is done because she is portrayed as female. Then, in addition to this,
she is weakened even more by her disability. This follows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Komugi comes across as a character that is not someone that many would relate to. Often times, even
if there is a disabled individual portrayed in media they are often they are written not as someone to
relate to, but to represent some other, necessary plot element. Because of this, disabled individuals are
portrayed As either less or more than human [...] blessed or damned, but never quite human (Sandell et
al., 5 6). In doing so, individuals who view these medias can successfully remove themselves from

European Imperialism In Asia
What exactly is imperialism? Imperialism is the seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country
(Beck et al. 339), with New Imperialism being a time of colonial expansion by Japan, the United
States, and European countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (New Imperialism). While
there were many reasons Europeans imperialized, one of the biggest was the advancements that
spurred from the Industrial Revolution, a transition to machine made goods that began in England in
the middle 1700s (Beck et al. 283). This allowed conquering another country to be very successful.
Several of those countries included those in Asia. European imperialism affected Asia in various ways,
both positive and negative. While it somewhat improved the lives of the people in Asia, it was also
extremely detrimental to them with the poverty, racism, and cultural ignorance they had to face.
Imperialism made life incredibly difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Europeans believing they had to civilize Asians, that meant they also believed Asian lifestyle

people to accept modern or Western ways (The Age of Imperialism). European customs Asians did not
understand were thrust upon them, threatening traditional Asian life and leaving them struggling their
cultural identity. This included religion. During 1857 in India, Indian soldiers, or sepoys, were given
rifles with cartridges greased with beef and pork fat from the British. In order to use the cartridges,
soldiers had to bite off the ends. Both Hindus, who consider the cow sacred, and Muslims, who do not
eat pork, were outraged by the news (Beck et al. 359). Because of this cultural ignorance, the soldiers
were outraged and rebelled, leading to an outbreak called the Sepoy Mutiny in which many sepoys

your possessions and the way you expose yourself in public. The author s technique of writing allows
readers to interpret characters in various ways. Although the novel does not start off like modern love
stories, it ends happily. The novel is also known to be a Bildungsroman, in which characters mature
and reevaluate their actions, thoughts, and beliefs. Elizabeth seems to start off with an unforgiving
personality. This essential prolongs her and Darcy being together. When she finds out Darcy paid off
the officer Lydia eloped with, Elizabeth finally matures. She comes to the understanding that Darcy
has only good intentions and that he truly does love her. He is not the man she thought he was. Darcy
also grows throughout the novel. At the beginning he states, I am in no humour at present to give
consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. (Austen 7). Darcy s love for Elizabeth
builds rapidly causing him to mature and stop being selfish.
By the end he is able to set aside is old beliefs and allows himself to be truly happy. Pride is a virtue

Dna Report Missing Person
With the use of DNAAnalysis, we can find the correct identification of the missing person by
narrowing the information down to a single individual. For DNA analysis, we first had to obtain
samples from both the skeletal remains (SKE2/SKE1) and samples from the two missing persons
whom we narrowed down to (MP1/MP2). We then added the DNA to four test tubes with two
different restriction enzymes to cut segments at certain patterns it recognized. We initially used two
different restriction enzymes because there could be a slight possibility that if only one was used, the
two missing persons DNA results after inserted into the gel electrophoresis chamber could show up
the same. This would result in having the same amount of fragments as well as

The Use Of Rggt Inhibitors Doesn t Exhibit Any Toxicity...
The use of RGGT inhibitors doesn t exhibit any toxicity in mouse models (Taylor et al., 2011). This is
supported by comparison to gunmetal mice that harbour a RGGT mutation leading to 80% reduction
of RGGT function. There are mild dysfunctional phenotypes such as hypopigmentation and altered
platelet synthesis. This suggests that a decreased RGGT activity, such that Rab proteins would be
hypoprenylated, would not be lethal if targeted (Recchi and Seabra, 2012). The decrease in RGGT
activity is only specific to certain tissues, leading to the idea that this mutation does not affect all Rabs
equally (Hume, et al. 2001).
NE10790 is a phosphonocarboxylate analogue of the more potent bisphosphonate risedronate (BP
RIS), and contains a carboxylate group instead of a phosphonate group. NE10790 is a specific
inhibitor of RGGT, whereas BPs are non specific inhibitors of Rab prenylation. They act on farnesyl
diphosphate synthase to inhibit prenylation of a variety of proteins such as Rho and Ras, seen in
Figure 9 (Gong, Altman and Klein, 2011). The use of BPs in clinical trials has been successful in
decreasing mortality from lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma. There is also evidence of anti
tumour effects, such as apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle, as well as in other tumour cell types
associated with bone. BPs have also been investigated in vitro on breast and prostate cancers, as they
commonly metastasise to bone. Studies show inhibition of invasion and adhesion to bone,

Rogers Park Adjustment Essay
All my life, I have lived in a safe place in Rogers Park. I know way too many places in Rogers Park
that are definitely not safe for anyone, especially the risky places that many younger children live by.
Many times I have passed by a dangerous area of Rogers Park and have wondered how the innocent
people deal with living there. I want to change this. If I had the power to adjust three things in Rogers
Park, I would choose the most important things that would come to my mind.
One thing I would choose to make better in Rogers Park would be to make it a sanctuary for
immigrants. I want to start with Rogers Park, because I know that not every place will ever be a
sanctuary, also, I think that would be the best adjustment in this community. I ... Show more content

I decided this would be a good adjustment for our area because lately there have been too many police
brutality cases. Honestly, this scares me very much, because many innocent people have been hurt, or
like many cases, died. I would want this because then we would be able to trust these people who are
supposed to be protecting us, not hurting and damaging us. Many stories of police brutality are mainly
focused on racism. Racist policemen are the last thing that we want.
The last adjustment I would want to make for Rogers Park would be to give schools more funds. I
think that this is important because many schools do not have enough funds to create important, fun
programs. They might be able to help pay for some students whose families won t be able to pay for
field trips or for team uniforms. This can help make upgrades to the school building. For example,
some schools might have to make adjustments for the driveway or classroom. Many schools might
need more funds to hire more teachers for students who might needs special observation and a
different teaching method.

Men As An Object Of Society Analysis
Men as an Object of Society
A lethal duel between Major von Crampas and Baron von Instetten had taken place in the seaside
resort of Kessin in Eastern Pomerania, resulting in the death of the major (Fontane Chapter 29 ). The
duel occurred as a result of the Major having a love affair with the Baron s wife six years ago, and was
revealed through the previous love letters that had been discovered in the wife s sewing table.
Wüllersdorf, a lawyer and friend to the Baron, was immediately summoned to deliver the challenge of
the duel and to act as a second in the affair (Fontane Chapter 27 ). Dueling had become a common
practice in Germany, much to the point that it questions whether this practice is an act of one s
vengeance or simply an influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being considered a coward is the true insults to male honour that men including Innstetten felt if he
did not provoke a duel. Likewise, the challenged party such as Crampas would feel equally obliged to
accept the duel; otherwise he would infinitely suffer the criticism from the larger society (Frevent
176). The Baron was quick to notify Wüllersdorf with a note regarding the affair, which he should
have controlled his emotions (Fontane Chapter 27 ). Even when Wüllersdorf had vowed to keep silent
of the affair, Innstetten not wanting to be the object of his sympathy, considered it too late to undo the
dueling request (Fontane Chapter 27 ). He took his pride seriously, and was convinced that duel was
the only solution even when his happiness was at stake (Fontane Chapter 27 ). Nevertheless, Innstetten
was unaware that he had become the object of society, chained to the wishes of the community.
Masculinity and honour is defended when one was courageous enough to fight in a duel, therefore,
deserving to be called a man (Frevent 175). Therefore, a sensible man would take part in dueling to

Comparing Jocasta In The Odyssey And Oedipus
Most seems to enjoy tight casting female characters through two tropes: either the damsel in distress
waiting for her knight in shining armor to save her, or a tough, power indulged witch who s only
concern is herself. Very few times (and by even fewer male authors) will a female character be written
as a medium between the two extremes. This problem has been occurring for centuries almost, even
being found in literature dating back to B.C., with Penelope from Homer s The Odyssey and Jocasta
from Sophocles Oedipus Rex : Penelope being written as the damsel with hundreds of suitors vying
for her attention, all while desperately weaving and waiting day in and day out for her true love to
come home; Jocasta as this harsh women who only wants to be around when everything is working to
her advantage. Then there s Antigone, who stands up for her morals against Thebes without so much
as batting an eye. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, ruler of Ithaca who has been lost out at sea
for the past 20 years after the Trojan war. At home waiting is his son Telemachus and his wife
Penelope. Unsurprisingly Telemachus with the help of Athene ... Show more content on

will inevitably bed his mother keep in mind, Jocasta knew this was all true she put so much effort into
making Oedipus believe that this wasn t true and that it was impossible (Sophocles 38). Later on when
Oedipus found out Jocasta was his own mother, Jocasta later killed herself before she had to face
responsibility for her actions to more than just Oedipus and his men. (Sophocles

resilient woman, who regresses into madness. This madness is the key which unlocks the answers to
her questions about the meaning of her life. As she recovers in a psychiatric ward from her mental
illness, she aspires to survive and find meaning in this survival. Ideal life versus actual experiences of
the world: Plath portrays Esther as an ambitious girl with very little experience of life. There is a gap

symptoms. Joan too describes her insensitive treatment at the hands of male psychiatrists. Also, some
of the hospitals in which Esther lives, pay more attention to sanitation than to the patients and are
frighteningly authoritarian. By seeing the inactive patients, she realizes that mental illness is
something defective and to be ashamed of. It is a blot which needs to be cleaned, hid and denied,

Zeal Without Knowledge Summary
The Quest for Knowledge Elder David Bednar said, Learning to love learning is central to the gospel
of Jesus Christ, is vital to our ongoing spiritual and personal development, and is an absolute necessity
in the world in which we do now and will yet live, serve, and work. Learning is essential to our
experience on earth, and must be a lifelong endeavor. However, knowledge is not enough. Why must
we learn how to apply the knowledge we gain to our lives and learn to think and act for ourselves?
What are the benefits of seeking knowledge and learning to think for ourselves? Thomas Plummer
helps to answer this question in his essay Diagnosing and Treating the Ophelia Syndrome as does
Hugh Nibley in his essay Zeal Without Knowledge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that sometimes we put too much trust in the experts (1990, pg. 443). He shares an
example from his life to illustrate this point. While taking a class in graduate school, his class was one
day discussing a classmate s paper on Heinrich von Kleist s play, Der zerbrochene Krug. Because it
was centered on a description written by a great Kleist scholar, they considered the paper to be
accurate and well written. Plummer s professor showed a picture to the class that proved this great
Kleist scholar to be wrong. The classmate had assumed that the information was correct, since it came
from a Kleist scholar, and had not bothered to check the information for himself. The professor said,
Let that be a lesson to you. Never trust anyone. You must examine the source yourself (1990, pg. 443
444). According to Plummer, we must develop a healthy distrust of authorities and experts and seek
for knowledge and understanding that we gain on our own (1990, pg. 443). Instead of relying on
others, we can know for ourselves what to think and do as we seek and find information that is

The Pros and Cons of Contracting Out In The Public Sector...
Advantages and Disadvantages of Contracting Out In The Public Sector
Introduction
Many public agencies in recent years have followed the trend of privatization, or contracting out.
Activities and functions that were once performed, or services that were once provided, by public
employees are now being performed by private sector employees (Lyons). Vehicle towing, health
services, police protection, and solid waste collection are among the many services and functions that
government has contracted out. A survey in 1995 that was sent to mayors or city managers of America
s largest cities (based on population) revealed that only three of the 66 cities that responded to the
survey had not privatized any city services. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Advantages Of Hiring Contract Employees.
Why is contracting out so attractive to a public agency? Privatizing has its advantages that represent
benefits to the agency.
Although reducing costs and improving services have been cited as the most important reasons
services are privatized by agencies, contracting out offers the attractiveness of hiring a contract
employee over a public employee. This occurs because of the apparent advantages offered by such
options (Dilger et al. 23). Some advantages of hiring a contract employee over a civil servant are as
follows:
Hiring And Training Costs Are Reduced
Reduction Of Hiring Costs Hiring a civil service employee involves recruiting, testing, interviewing,
and selecting a candidate or candidates for given positions. This process is an exhaustive one, which
can last for weeks and months, from the initial recruitment to the final selection of a candidate to the
position. This long process can amount to thousands of dollars in expenditures. The costs incurred by
these steps in the hiring process result from compensation of staff for thousands of additional hours

Similarities Between Luxembourg And The United States
Luxembourg is known to have the best health care system in the world. In Luxembourg, every citizen
has health care insurance and each member is protected by basic medical coverage. Citizens in
Luxembourg have health care taxes taken out of each check which is on average 5.44 percent of gross
income (Health Management, 2017). Dependents are covered under their guardians who pay health
care taxes. Another perk of the Luxembourg health care system is that students are covered for free
until the age of 27. The insurance pays for any basic procedure or treatment that is medically
necessary, if someone chooses to have an elective procedure one must self pay. Options are given to
the citizens to have private health insurance in case one was to become severely ill or next an
extensive procedure (Health Gov, 2012).
The United States has several different insurance options for citizens such as insurance via an
employer, insurance purchased privately or free health care provided by the government. Individuals
qualify for free medical care if they are of low income or over the age of 65. The different insurance
companies can pick and choose what they want to cover and which doctor the patient must use. Also,

I Attended The Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership Seminar
In June of 2015, I attended the Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership Seminar North Florida at Florida State
University in Tallahassee, Florida. The four days I spent at that seminar were some of the most
defining moments of my adolescent life. The Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, or HOBY,
provides an opportunity for youth leaders to build their leadership skills in an open and accepting
environment while tackling taboo topics such as climate change, terrorism, pollution, and racial
profiling. The seminar is the reason why I have taken up such a distinct passion for youth leadership
as well as the belief that leadership development in our youth is one of the most important of the
diverse methods to building a brighter future. Therefore, for my service project I helped put together
the 2016 Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership Seminar at Florida State University and served on staff to

In Castaway the main character Chuck is facing some conflicts.
On type of conflict is called Man vs. Man, an example for this conflict is the scene where he yelled at
the people in Russia, because they were working slow and he knew could deliver one package from

husband. Her new husband didn t want to lose her so he went to meet up with CHuck instead of her.
He wanted to make sure that old feelings wouldn t come up again.
Another type of conflict was man vs. nature, in man vs nature the man had to overcome the struggles

Animal Experimentation And The Human Understanding Of...
Any knowledge obtained, or currently being obtained, through the use of animals is beneficial to
furthering the human understanding of medicine (Greek et al. 15). Throughout history, animal
experimentation has been a key component in understanding the fundamentals of human life. Kay
Peggs argues that virtually every major medical advance of the last century is due, in part, to research
with animals (624). Before recent times, scientists could easily dissect animals strictly for exploration
and curiosity (Greek et al. 15). The knowledge gained from animal experimentation has helped
scientists get desired results without causing direct harm to humans. Without animal experimentation,
medicine and education would be in the dark ages.
In today s times, using animals for medical research and education is a highly controversial issue.
Some believe that it is not justifiable to use animals to serve as human models. They argue that
humans are the best models for human disease and treatment efficacy, not animals. However, humans
cannot be test subjects for the benefit of society without volunteering to participate and fully
understanding the question being researched. This is for all human beings, including prisoners, the
mentally impaired, and unwanted children (Rollin 5). Also, according to the USDA, the first
requirement for a new medical drug or vaccine to be considered for a clinical trial is that nonhuman
animal subjects were used during the development and testing

Mill Vs Adam Smith
Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill were eighteenth and nineteenth century liberal thinkers. Both men
contributed significant political, economic, and social philosophy during their respective lifetimes.
There are many paradigms of thought that the two had in common such as their beliefs in the necessity
of free trade, the abundant right of free speech, and the dream of liberty and freedom. However,
despite both men being liberal giants, there is a great deal of conflict when it comes to their
approaches to colonialism. Their time in history can generally be defined as an era of European
colonialism where the relationship between empire and colony came to the fore of intellectual and
political debate as the quarrels between the British imperial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Like his father before him, Mill worked the majority of his career in the British East India Company.
The company typified the kind of despotic rule that Mill wanted in savage societies. But, unlike many
employees of the company, he recognised the company s government of India for what it actually was
a despotism of an alien race, which, despite the good accomplished by it in the last decades of its
existence, was established by conquest, treaty, and annexation (Harris, 1964, p. 185). It is hard to
believe that Mill s liberal colonialism can be considered liberal in the conventional sense. At the heart
of his justification is the principle of progress or improvement by which the idle and irrational are to
become, through a combination of segregation, force, agrarian labour and education, the industrious,
rational, and autonomous citizen to the extent possible and if not, to remain segregated from civil
society and deprived of their rights and freedoms (Arneil, 2012, p. 505). It cannot be liberal to impose
your will onto someone else (albeit a foreign state), it is purely oppression, regardless of what
perceived just cause you are doing it in the name of. Interestingly, this liberal colonialism of the
nineteenth century has striking parallels to that of twenty first century neo conservatism in the USA.

Is there any output from sleep? Where does cat get its input from? What has to happen before the shell

There is no output from sleep (try giving the command sleep 30 by itself).
The /etc/services file provides input for cat (when cat has an argument, it does not check standard

There are many ways to solve this problem. The following solutions are all basically the same. These

parent of the process using the variable. They also use the fact that echo changes multiple sequential

Rwandan Conflicts And The Effects Of African Conflict In...
05. EFFECTS OF AFRICAN CONFLICTS:
The effects of conflicts in terms of refugee flows into neighbouring countries and the emergence of
internally displaced persons (IDPs) has demonstrated that no African country is an island unto itself .
Refugee camps in the Mano River Union region of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have served as
source of instability for countries in the region. It is estimated that there are close to three million
refugees in central Africa alone. The camps in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from the
Rwandan genocide of 1994, remain a source of concern for all the key actors involved in the Great
Lakes region. 200,000 refugees have spilled into Chad as a result of the violent conflict in Sudan s
Darfur region, creating tension along the border. Dadaab(Kenya) hosts people that have fled various
conflicts in the larger Eastern Africa region. Most have come as a consequence of the civil war in
southern Somalia, including both Somalis and members of Somalia s various ethnic minority groups
such as the Bantu. These situations illustrate the need for effective post conflict reconstruction
processes and the institutions to back them up. IDPs and refugees make it difficult for host
communities and displaced communities to settle down and initiate development. Therefore, a central
pillar of post conflict reconstruction is the incorporation of IDPs and refugees into the host community
or the repatriation of refugees, after consideration of possible

Essay on A clean well-lighted Place
Hemingway s short story, quot;A Clean Well lighted Place quot;, takes place at a cafe very late at
night. Two waiters are watching their last, lingering customer, an old man, who is by now very drunk.
The younger waiter s impatience and the older waiter s understanding toward the old man carry out
the theme of the story: quot;It [life] was all a nothing and a man was a nothing too. quot;(114) Man
must consequently find something to distract himself from his horrible truth. For the old man and the
older waiter, quot;a clean and well lighted quot; cafe is such an escape.
The pervading metaphor in this story is predictably, the quot;clean well lighted place. quot; The story s

by now, he has nothing but money, which is not able to comfort his loneliness; he has nothing but an
old body, which people think that it is nasty. His niece looks after him. But all they care about is his
money. The reason that they saved him from the suicide is the quot;fear for his should. quot;(111) The
older waiter sees the dark truth of life from the old man. Like the old man, he has stared into the Great
Nada, quot;...It [life] was all a nothing and a man was a nothing too... quot; (114) Unable to bear the
darkness of his world, the older waiter is quot;reluctant to close up because there may be some one
who needs the cafe quot; (113), as he wishes also to remain in the light.
In this short story, Hemingway expresses a completely nihilistic worldview: life is meaningless, and
filled with darkness. He believes that people shout find a method of coping with life s hardships in a
graceful, dignified manner. Like the elderly drinker, despite the obvious hardships in his life (since he
attempts suicide), he doesn t lose his cool, but finding his own way of exhibiting grace under pressure,

Analysis Of Sylvia Plath s Daddy
Sylvia Plath s poem Daddy a sixteen five line stanza is about Plath s father and the darkness and
brutality of male dominance. Plath incorporates a very dark and meaningful storyboard to describe her
feelings towards her father. Creating a figurative image for the readers, in second person, it is clearly
understood that she is unhappy to be alive. Sylvia Plath s use of various elements of poetry dramatizes
her internal battle with societal patriarchy and male dominance. The use of metaphors in the poem
combines unrelated things into a big meaning. In addition, the use of symbolism builds an abstract
concept in the poem. Finally, the use of imagery binds together the poem, into an organized vivid
picture. Daddy is Plath s best work; it leaves the reader in understanding the brutality and the hatred
women received from men during that time. Firstly, Plath s use of metaphors in the poem, builds the
poem a character and a deep meaning in regard to her father, whose image has been haunting Plath her
whole life. Using a metaphor of a black shoe and her as a foot that lives in it, Plath creates a deep
meaning to the representation of her father. Any more, black shoe, in which I have lived like a foot, for
thirty years, poor and white (705). In addition, the black shoe was a representation of the societal
patriarchy of the time that did not let the poet live freely under her own terms. In this case there was
the image of her father, that haunted her and holding her back.

Ipsilateral Knee Injury Essay
1.1 Background
Concomitant knee injuries and knee pain associated with lower limb fractures often stay undetected,
or are inadequately addressed in fracture treatment plans, which then attributes to poor treatment
outcomes. [1,2,3] The treatment of choice for tibial shaft fractures is intramedullary (IM) nailing.[4]
After placing an IM nail during surgery, the ROM of the ipsilateral knee joint can be compromised
due to pain, undetected ligamental, meniscal injuries, or the positioning of the IM tibial nail itself.
[2,5,6,7] Although knee pain has been announced the most frequent complication of IM nailing, often
times these instabilities are overlooked during emergency surgical care and remain unaddressed in
post surgical management. [3,8] Long term follow up studies on anterior knee pain described
incidental rates between 10 and 83 percent among patients. [1,5,9,10] It has also been stated that the
high incidence of knee pain after IM nailing is of multifactorial origin.[1,8,11] ... Show more content

These mechanisms can lead to ligamentous injuries in the ipsilateral knee, such as impairment to the
cruciate ligaments or the lateral and medial collateral ligament. These injuries are very common in
cases of open and closed lower limp fractures. [2,3,6,9] Furthermore, the presence of a nail and/or its
protrusion thru the tibial plateau has been recognized as a significant cause of anterior knee pain.
[10,11,12]
We are investigating, whether concomitant ligamental knee injuries generally stay undetected upon
admission, or develop through surgical intervention and treatment plans. For that reason, we try to
correlate ligamentous integrity, range of motion and IM nail size to possible knee injuries and

Analysis Of Stanley Milgram s The Perils Of Obedience
Essay #4 Obedience and Defiance
Stanley Milgram, a psychologist at Yale University, conducted an experiment, which later wrote about
it in The Perils of Obedience in 1963 to research how people obey authoritative figures and what
extent a person would go inflicting pain onto an innocent person. The study involved a teacher
(subject), learner (actor), and an experimenter (authoritative figure). The teacher was placed in front of
a control panel labeled with electrical shocks ranging from 15 to 450 volts and instructed to shock the
learner incrementally if they gave a wrong answer when asked questions with word associations.
Switches corresponded with the voltage ranging from Slight Shock to Danger: Severe Shock followed

The study was observing how far a person would go inflicting pain onto another person. According to
Milgram s study, the subjects would rather please the experimenter and show him or her they can do
the job rather than take on the responsibility that they are harming another human being. The essence
of obedience as Milgram says is when the person follows orders for another person and is not held
responsible for his or her own actions. It is much easier to do a task even if it means harming someone
as in the experiment if the subject is not held liable for anyone. The experimenter did not threaten the
subjects with punishment such as loss of income, community ostracism, or jail for failure to obey
(Milgram 181). The subject did not really have a choice in the experiment, they were compliant, and
when they expressed signs of tension or anxiety or even voiced their concerns, they were told to
continue and that the experiment must go on. Obedience to authority is generally, what most people,
as proven in Milgram s experiment, tend to follow. Nevertheless, is obeying authority always the right
thing to do? A great example is while at work, an employer who gives demands or orders to his or her
employee and since it is their job to follow directions from their

sexism everyday even in the simplest forms. Though women tend to receive more grieve when it

Yes, women s bodies are used to sell products, or portray a perfect image of how men want their
women, but women must voluntarily advertize their own bodies. Some females may considered sexy
or racy photos and commercials to be degrading, but those women choosing to do so can find it very
empowering. They not only feel confident but they are becoming something that men swoon over and
yearn for; ergo creating a sense of authority. Sexism runs rampant in every facet of our society.
The story of Trifles exposes the sexism that women dealt with then, and still to some extent deal with
today. The men show major examples of diminishing and downplaying the women s intelligence when
ignoring them throughout examining the crime scene. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale find incriminating
evidence against Minnie, but the men never think to ask them their opinion; they are too preoccupied

Ethics In Call Of Duty
War is unforgiveable. Even to the novices and the arm chair commanders whose combat experience
does not extend past Call of Duty , it is clear that choosing one path over another can mean the
difference between life and death for oneself and one s unit. Sometimes there is no right decision, and
yet in others our own prejudices, fears, and emotions get in the way of the right decision. While the
former is often the well known reality of life that is seldom overcome, the latter leads people to make
the wrong decision when the right one is clear. The same can be said of the unit from the Academy
Award winning 1986 film Platoon that fell victim to their own prejudices, fears, and emotions,
eventually committing a number of war crimes before the film was through.
Despite the fictional nature of the film, Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, and the rest of the

The Role Of Bargains In Civil Wars And Terrorism
Bargains are significantly more difficult to negotiate and implement in civil wars and terrorism than in
foreign wars. Fewer negotiations are created, even less negotiation settlements are signed by both
parties, and if they are the lack of implementation from both parties continues to break down the
bargain. In many cases, as is commonly found in civil wars and terrorism, ...compromises that would
allow the actors to avoid the horrendous costs associated with wars, and terrorism are often
overlooked and the disputants are motivated to pay the highest price of war rather than negotiate with

Factors such as lack of information on the opposing part, commitment problems, and indivisibility
among rebel groups provide another obstacle for the government to overcome if it wishes to end
conflict before the war. Which in the long run serves as an explanation as to why for most groups, it is
easier and often financially cheaper to go war rather than negotiate with an opposing party. In short,
civil wars and terrorism are a byproduct of bargaining

Uterus Persuasive Speech
A uterus transplant is a whole organ transplant that is allowing women the opportunity of being
pregnant. There are millions of women worldwide that have uterine factor infertility, UFI, which has
left them unable to carry a pregnancy due to the lack of no uterus. In the past, women with UFI could
only have children by surrogates or by adopting. The transplant patients t and donors are tested and
matched. The uteruses have been donated by a chosen donor of the recipient s choice, patient s
mother, family member, or close friend. The removal of the uterus from the donor takes twice as long
as the placement of the uterus into the patient. The transplant patients has to take immunosuppressant
medications for the whole time that they have the uterus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can become very complicated if the terms between the person carrying the child and the person
receiving child is not clearly stated and understood. There are many medical bills, the surrogate s time
and suffering that has to be negotiated. Once the baby is born it would be difficult for the surrogate to
become detached after carrying the infant for nine months. This is a very strong emotional tie that
could cause the surrogate to reconsider the whole deal. Even many years down the road the surrogate
could want or try to become involved in the child s life. Surrogacy is legal in the United States. In the
United States the surrogacy process can be legally complicated. In other countries it could be a
different story however. In many other countries, surrogacy is highly restricted or even banned (team,

Participatory Arts In Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window
As art slowly develops through the twentieth century, moving past voyeurism and historical art where
it promotes passive spectatorial consumption, the role of the audience has evolved too. From the
traditional historical passive visitor in perspective and panoptic spaces, art has gradually evolved into
turning the spectator into an active contributor who not only engages with the work but also becomes
the co author in its creation and completion. Claire Bishop points out, art must be directed against
spectatorship, against the passivity of the masses paralysed by the spectacle of modern life . This not
only applies to art but to objects, image, stories, films etc. The concept of participatory arts can be
demonstrated through the Total Theatre ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both series fulfils the desire to antagonize the public and stage provocation. The artist relies upon the
participants creative exploitation of the situation the artist offers, just as participants require the artist s
cue and direction. This symbiotic relationship is a continual play of mutual tension, recognition and
dependency. As boundaries between art forms become more seamless and permeable and as new
technology places production within reach of an increasingly sophisticated audience, participation art
gains more acceptance. Since participatory arts are incomplete without participation from the
audience, more studies must be undertaken to understand the needs of the audience as they are purely
voluntary partners and are able to make or break the project. To cater to different groups, the project
shall not be designed to be excessively bureaucratic. It must able to communicate and interact within a
broad and diversified audience about issues directly relevant to their life. Moving forward, the state of
art at this stage is best summed up in the words of Allan

Chaos And Guilty In Shakespeare s King Lear
In King Lear, Edgar makes the presumption or assertion that the gods are just in their punishments
holding authority accountable for the folly in their decision making. Lear and Gloucester, the
patriarchs and rulers of their households, both prove that everyone, especially the heads of law
enforcement in the kingdome, are liable to err and that they must suffer to come to a conclusion about
their wrong and make amendments (or take responsibility and atone for their mistakes). In absence of
a true authoritarian ruler, chaos ensues to teach all parties involved the importance of knowledge
through suffering. However, the chaos subsides and comes to a resolution with the forces of good

ignores Familial responsibility and engages in unreasonable conduct, blinded by their reputation to
make suitable reparations. Is rejection of edmund as his illegitimate child fostered a sense of
inadequacy that could only be satiated with vengeance on his brother and ..... to power. Therefore,
Edmund choreographs an elaborate and malicious plan to convince his father that Edgar threatens his
position and manipulates his father s belief in the stars and a falsified letter to substantiate his claim.
Accordingly, Gloucester reacts by creating a manhunt for Edgar and granting Edmund the authority he
craves. While his actions may not seem as egregious or reprehensible as Lear s, his impetuous
decision to hunt Edgar without verifying , confronting Edmund s claims deprives Edgar of a chance
for redemption or explanation. While Gloucester may be blinded (ignorant to) the deception in his
own house, he has an awareness of Lear s mistake in giving up power to his daughters but fails to
amend the injustice and actually unites with Lear s corrupt daughters until he realizes their malicious
intent against their father. Heroically attempting to defend his friend, the evil forces of Goneril and
Regan gauge Gloucester s eyes out ironically, demonstrating the blindness in his decision making.
Unable to cope with the pain of his life, Gloucester loses faith in humanity and the god s judgement:.
However, Edgar guides Gloucester through the

Drugs And Drugs
A. Introduction About $800 Billion worth of drugs are sold every year. The drug industry has affected
agriculture in various ways. While some may think that drug industry has done good for the
agriculture industry. It has also had repercussions. Drugs not only affect our ecosystem, it also affects
us human beings, animals, and plants. It s similar to a cycle, we start off with the ecosystem, which
then leads to plants, then the animals, to human beings. If the drug industry is affecting the whole
agriculture industry it s affecting the whole world. Drugs affect our ecosystem by the pollution, drugs
affect plant growth, drugs affect animals development, and all of these affect what we has humans eat
on a daily basis. If something goes wrong because of the drugs that the farmers are using, at the end it
will affect humans beings that have either consumed or inhaled; and it will be corrupting the whole
agriculture industry which could ve been prevented.
B. Drug History A little bit of history of how marijuana began to go high in demand. Marijuana was
one of the first drugs that became popular. In 1616 tobacco was known as the expert item because of
Jamestown. Spaniards found the natives in the West Indies using the tobacco plant. The spaniards then
took some of the tobacco seeds to Europe, which then ended up spreading to other countries and
around the Mediterranean Sea. The person who discovered this was, John Rolfe. He then began to do

  • 2. Zoning Simply put, zoning, in a planning or land use context, is the classification of the land in a community into districts with different regulations for its utilization. Zoning and other methods of land use control have evolved with the primary objectives of promoting the health, safety, and wellbeing of residents while minimizing the negative impacts of one activity or use upon others. Zoning is effectively a legislative process whereby a community prioritizes values associated with land, development, and associated activities. A zoning system generally includes map or plan elements which define areas where like regulations apply, and a textual, usually relatively locally legislated ordinance, code, or law consisting of definitions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The final general type of zoning regulation limits the physical and spatial form of development. Examples of this type include restrictions on building heights, setbacks, road widths, building materials, and architectural style. In the first third of the 20th century, the United States saw zoning become an accepted tool in land use regulation. New York City passed a zoning plan in 1916. This set of rules primarily focused on building form and setbacks, and included a now routine provision for variances. The New York law was primarily a response to a technological innovation the skyscraper and the arising concerns associated with it. Many States adopted the Standard State Zoning Enabling Acts of 1922, which was offered as a model by the U.S. Department of Commerce and provided a framework and codified a general legal basis for zoning across the country. The Department of Commerce also introduced a Standard City Planning Enabling Act, which was widely adopted beginning in 1928. These acts put into place the general structure of local and regional planning and zoning which is still used today. Elements and entities such as the Planning Commission, the Master Plan, subdivision control measures, and provision for regional planning bodies and plans were primarily introduced by the Standard City Planning Enabling Act. Imperialism is the seizure of a country or territory by a stronger country (Beck et al. 339), with New Imperialism being a time of colonial expansion by Japan, the United States, and European countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (New Imperialism). While there were many reasons Europeans imperialized, one of the biggest was the advancements that spurred from the Industrial Revolution, a transition to machine made goods that began in England in the middle 1700s (Beck et al. 283). This allowed conquering another country to be very successful. Several of those countries included those in Asia. European imperialism affected Asia in various ways, both positive and negative. The author s technique of writing allows readers to interpret characters in various ways. Although the novel does not start off like modern love stories, it ends happily. The novel is also known to be a Bildungsroman, in which characters mature and reevaluate their actions, thoughts, and beliefs. Elizabeth seems to start off with an unforgiving personality. This essential prolongs her and Darcy being together. When she finds out Darcy paid off the officer Lydia eloped with, Elizabeth finally matures. She comes to the understanding that Darcy has only good intentions and that he truly does love her. He is not the man she thought he was. Darcy also grows throughout the novel. At the beginning he states, I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. (Austen 7). Darcy s love for Elizabeth builds rapidly causing him to mature and stop being selfish. By the end he is able to set aside is old beliefs and allows himself to be truly happy. • 12. The Use Of Rggt Inhibitors Doesn t Exhibit Any Toxicity... The use of RGGT inhibitors doesn t exhibit any toxicity in mouse models (Taylor et al., 2011). This is supported by comparison to gunmetal mice that harbour a RGGT mutation leading to 80% reduction of RGGT function. There are mild dysfunctional phenotypes such as hypopigmentation and altered platelet synthesis. This suggests that a decreased RGGT activity, such that Rab proteins would be hypoprenylated, would not be lethal if targeted (Recchi and Seabra, 2012). The decrease in RGGT activity is only specific to certain tissues, leading to the idea that this mutation does not affect all Rabs equally (Hume, et al. 2001). NE10790 is a phosphonocarboxylate analogue of the more potent bisphosphonate risedronate (BP RIS), and contains a carboxylate group instead of a phosphonate group. NE10790 is a specific inhibitor of RGGT, whereas BPs are non specific inhibitors of Rab prenylation. They act on farnesyl diphosphate synthase to inhibit prenylation of a variety of proteins such as Rho and Ras, seen in Figure 9 (Gong, Altman and Klein, 2011). The use of BPs in clinical trials has been successful in decreasing mortality from lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma. There is also evidence of anti tumour effects, such as apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle, as well as in other tumour cell types associated with bone. BPs have also been investigated in vitro on breast and prostate cancers, as they commonly metastasise to bone. Studies show inhibition of invasion and adhesion to bone, ... Very few times (and by even fewer male authors) will a female character be written as a medium between the two extremes. This problem has been occurring for centuries almost, even being found in literature dating back to B.C., with Penelope from Homer s The Odyssey and Jocasta from Sophocles Oedipus Rex : Penelope being written as the damsel with hundreds of suitors vying for her attention, all while desperately weaving and waiting day in and day out for her true love to come home; Jocasta as this harsh women who only wants to be around when everything is working to her advantage. Then there s Antigone, who stands up for her morals against Thebes without so much as batting an eye. Why must we learn how to apply the knowledge we gain to our lives and learn to think and act for ourselves? What are the benefits of seeking knowledge and learning to think for ourselves? • 26. Animal Experimentation And The Human Understanding Of... Any knowledge obtained, or currently being obtained, through the use of animals is beneficial to furthering the human understanding of medicine (Greek et al. 15). Throughout history, animal experimentation has been a key component in understanding the fundamentals of human life. Kay Peggs argues that virtually every major medical advance of the last century is due, in part, to research with animals (624). Before recent times, scientists could easily dissect animals strictly for exploration and curiosity (Greek et al. 15). The knowledge gained from animal experimentation has helped scientists get desired results without causing direct harm to humans. Without animal experimentation, medicine and education would be in the dark ages. In today s times, using animals for medical research and education is a highly controversial issue. Some believe that it is not justifiable to use animals to serve as human models. They argue that humans are the best models for human disease and treatment efficacy, not animals. However, humans cannot be test subjects for the benefit of society without volunteering to participate and fully understanding the question being researched. This is for all human beings, including prisoners, the mentally impaired, and unwanted children (Rollin 5). Also, according to the USDA, the first requirement for a new medical drug or vaccine to be considered for a clinical trial is that nonhuman animal subjects were used during the development and testing ... • 27. Mill Vs Adam Smith Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill were eighteenth and nineteenth century liberal thinkers. Both men contributed significant political, economic, and social philosophy during their respective lifetimes. There are many paradigms of thought that the two had in common such as their beliefs in the necessity of free trade, the abundant right of free speech, and the dream of liberty and freedom. However, despite both men being liberal giants, there is a great deal of conflict when it comes to their approaches to colonialism. Their time in history can generally be defined as an era of European colonialism where the relationship between empire and colony came to the fore of intellectual and political debate as the quarrels between the British imperial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like his father before him, Mill worked the majority of his career in the British East India Company. The company typified the kind of despotic rule that Mill wanted in savage societies. But, unlike many employees of the company, he recognised the company s government of India for what it actually was a despotism of an alien race, which, despite the good accomplished by it in the last decades of its existence, was established by conquest, treaty, and annexation (Harris, 1964, p. 185). It is hard to believe that Mill s liberal colonialism can be considered liberal in the conventional sense. At the heart of his justification is the principle of progress or improvement by which the idle and irrational are to become, through a combination of segregation, force, agrarian labour and education, the industrious, rational, and autonomous citizen to the extent possible and if not, to remain segregated from civil society and deprived of their rights and freedoms (Arneil, 2012, p. 505). It cannot be liberal to impose your will onto someone else (albeit a foreign state), it is purely oppression, regardless of what perceived just cause you are doing it in the name of. Interestingly, this liberal colonialism of the nineteenth century has striking parallels to that of twenty first century neo conservatism in the USA. Where Mill wanted to increase ... Refugee camps in the Mano River Union region of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have served as source of instability for countries in the region. It is estimated that there are close to three million refugees in central Africa alone. The camps in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from the Rwandan genocide of 1994, remain a source of concern for all the key actors involved in the Great Lakes region. 200,000 refugees have spilled into Chad as a result of the violent conflict in Sudan s Darfur region, creating tension along the border. Dadaab(Kenya) hosts people that have fled various conflicts in the larger Eastern Africa region. Most have come as a consequence of the civil war in southern Somalia, including both Somalis and members of Somalia s various ethnic minority groups such as the Bantu. These situations illustrate the need for effective post conflict reconstruction processes and the institutions to back them up. Plath incorporates a very dark and meaningful storyboard to describe her feelings towards her father. Creating a figurative image for the readers, in second person, it is clearly understood that she is unhappy to be alive. Sylvia Plath s use of various elements of poetry dramatizes her internal battle with societal patriarchy and male dominance. The use of metaphors in the poem combines unrelated things into a big meaning. In addition, the use of symbolism builds an abstract concept in the poem. Finally, the use of imagery binds together the poem, into an organized vivid picture. Daddy is Plath s best work; it leaves the reader in understanding the brutality and the hatred women received from men during that time. Firstly, Plath s use of metaphors in the poem, builds the poem a character and a deep meaning in regard to her father, whose image has been haunting Plath her whole life. Using a metaphor of a black shoe and her as a foot that lives in it, Plath creates a deep meaning to the representation of her father. Any more, black shoe, in which I have lived like a foot, for thirty years, poor and white (705). • 34. Ipsilateral Knee Injury Essay 1.1 Background Concomitant knee injuries and knee pain associated with lower limb fractures often stay undetected, or are inadequately addressed in fracture treatment plans, which then attributes to poor treatment outcomes. [1,2,3] The treatment of choice for tibial shaft fractures is intramedullary (IM) nailing.[4] After placing an IM nail during surgery, the ROM of the ipsilateral knee joint can be compromised due to pain, undetected ligamental, meniscal injuries, or the positioning of the IM tibial nail itself. [2,5,6,7] Although knee pain has been announced the most frequent complication of IM nailing, often times these instabilities are overlooked during emergency surgical care and remain unaddressed in post surgical management. [3,8] Long term follow up studies on anterior knee pain described incidental rates between 10 and 83 percent among patients. [1,5,9,10] It has also been stated that the high incidence of knee pain after IM nailing is of multifactorial origin.[1,8,11] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study was observing how far a person would go inflicting pain onto another person. According to Milgram s study, the subjects would rather please the experimenter and show him or her they can do the job rather than take on the responsibility that they are harming another human being. The essence of obedience as Milgram says is when the person follows orders for another person and is not held responsible for his or her own actions. It is much easier to do a task even if it means harming someone as in the experiment if the subject is not held liable for anyone. The experimenter did not threaten the subjects with punishment such as loss of income, community ostracism, or jail for failure to obey (Milgram 181). The subject did not really have a choice in the experiment, they were compliant, and when they expressed signs of tension or anxiety or even voiced their concerns, they were told to continue and that the experiment must go on.
