2. Monster Of Baun Research Paper
For centuries, stories of monsters have made their way their way through cultures. And with each
culture comes a different perceptions of these monsters. In Japan, the story of the monster Baku has
been passed down as early as the Muromachi Period which is around the 14th 15th century. The story
originates back to chinse folklore, while no one knows who the exact creator of the story Baku is we
do know that it has been an oral tradition in the Japanese and Chinse culture. While it is a story, Baku
has also made appearances in Japanese anime and manga. The monster of Baku, is considered a
monster because he devours the hopes and dreams of anyone who summoned him without caution.

3. I Am A Math Lesson Essay
For my second lesson, I decided to conduct a math lesson as I had never conducted a math lesson in an
elementary classroom let alone a 3rd grade classroom. I discussed with my CT what math concept I
could teach that pertained to one of the 3rd grade standards. My CT told me that I could introduce the
new concept of area to the class on the Friday that I was supposed to teach my lesson. I knew that that
introducing a new topic on a Friday in an elementary classroom was not ideal as the majority of
teachers that I have observed in the past usually wrap up their week s lessons on Friday. The Friday I
was conducting my lesson was also a shorten day due to Fall Break, so I thought the students would
show some off task behavior for the early release day. These circumstances made me think hard about
how I was going to introduce the concept of area to the students in an effective way. I knew that I
needed to have a lesson that included an exploratory hands on activity to keep the students engaged
and wanting to learn. Therefore, I decided to use cheese crackers as manipulatives to represent square
units. The students were to first guess what the area of the different shapes in a worksheet packet were
and then they were to use the crackers to figure out the actually area of the different shapes. I had been
grading the students weekly math quizzes that pertained to arrays and multiplication a couple of weeks
prior to my lesson which helped me presses the students knowledge on

Currently, there are several Vegan restaurants near me with great food. However, once you are finish
eating you must go to another location if you would like to listen to live music. Last week for
example, me and my best friend planned to hangout on Saturday for dinner and dancing. We decided
to check out the new Vegan restaurant called Vegan Basket downtown Atlanta. The staff was great and
the food was even better, but we had to find another location for dancing. The next day, I have a great
thought of opening a Vegan restaurant where everyone can come and enjoy great food and live
entertainment. A couple of weeks later I ran the idea pass my best friend and she agreed to be my
business partner.

5. “The Home Of The Chinese Race Is In Asia, And A Great Future
The home of the Chinese race is in Asia, and a great future awaits the Anglo Saxon branch of
humanity upon the continent of North America. Diplomat Charles Wolcott Brooks, while meeting with
the Canadian Royal Commission on Chinese immigration in 1884, Brooks advocated for cooperation
between the united states and Canada in preventing Chinese immigration to not only America, but all
North America. His rhetoric reflects the deeply institutionalized anti Chinese racism in the United
States. Anti Chinese racism, throughout the mid nineteenth century, emerged as a major political issue
as the Chinese immigrant population rose in the western United States and instances of racial violence

Foreign military and economic intervention by European imperial powers created greater instability in
China. Western powers, through an unequal treaty system, engaged in legal imperialism that gave
them protection through special rights and privileges that gradually reduced Chinese tradesmen to a
subordinate role. Opium trade, fueled by Britain, drained China of silver, and drove up the price of
silver. Silver was the standard payment for taxes, but rising prices made tax payments an economic
burden for peasants. The First Opium War, 1839 to 1842, resulted in the defeat of the Chinese and the
signing of the Treaty of Nanjing. The treaty forced ceded Hong Kong to the British and open treaty
ports to the British along the southern coast providing Britain with greater access to foreign trade. The
emerge of western competition in China threaten the livelihood of people throughout the country and
weakened China s economic power in the region overall. New trade routes, commodities, and the
introduction of western business practices affected many people in various parts of the country.
China, during the mid nineteenth century, also experienced its own internal political instability. The

6. Essay on Routine Drug Testing For High School Athletes
Patricia Neal once said, A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder
drug (Neal). However, many teenagers of this era, large part athletes, seem to think differently and
they constantly use illegal drugs. To help fight this problem, many colleges have taken strong actions
in trying to stop drug abuse by athletes. High schools throughout the country have considered taking
these same actions for various reasons as well. Some people believe that high school athletes ought to
be given a routine drug test because it will help prevent them from abusing illegal substances. Such
actions will also help detect cheaters who use performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) to get an edge
over their opponents. On the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a drug testing system is set up for high school athletes, then those athletes who are tempted to use
illegal substances will think twice before using them. Furthermore, those athletes that test positive for
these substances will get suspended from their respective teams and this will create a healthier
environment at least in high school sports. A routine drug testing system in high school will help
detect cheaters who use performance enhancing drugs to get and edge over their opponents. In today s
world, with the competitiveness and popularity of steroids and other PEDs among professional
athletes, it is not difficult to believe that many high school athletes are doing the same. A 2003 study
examining steroid use among teens in the United States showed that 6.1 percent had illegally used
steroids and 3.2 percent had injected an illegal drug one or more times during their lifetime ( Teens
and Drugs Fast Facts ). Nevertheless, if a routine drug testing system is established, those who are
caught cheating will most likely get suspended or even banned from high school sports thus making
the competitive field more leveled. In addition, those who are tempted to use performance enhancers
will be less likely to in order to avoid the consequences. In 1996, while admitting to the use of
anabolic steroids, Arnold Schwarzenegger stated, It was what I had to do to compete. The danger with
steroids is over usage. I only did it before a difficult competition for two

First, this paper will examine Argentina, and several of the notable Argentine films that have made an
impact on Latin Cinema. The first film is a 1915 silent film directed by Eduardo Martinez de le Para
and Enrique Gunche called Nobleza Gaucho (Gaucho Nobility). The story begins by introducing
businessman Don Jose Gran on his travels to La Pampa in hopes of buying horses for his urban estate.
He hires the poor, yet upright Juan, a gaucho from the Pampas lowlands, who tames horses for a
living. As the two travel, they come across a damsel in distress, Maria, and Juan takes it upon himself

These filmmakers allowed their views of Mexican society to influence their films. This is Cleary seen
in Alejandro Gonalez Ifiarritu s 2000 acclaimed film Amores Perros, which involves violence,
corruption, dog fighting, and many feel these observations make clear that Amores Perros can be made
to render serious social commentary. It has even been stated that no film had matched the international
commercial success of Like Water for Chocolate before Amores Perros. This displays how the film
was very successful at reaching a global audience. Alfonso Cuaron s 2001 masterpiece, Y Tu Mama

problems facing the country. Many viewers see the film as offering various perspectives from which to
advance a critique of social and political problems that have long plagued Mexico. The acclaim that
these filmmakers would receive for these films were seen by many as, marking the resurgence of the
independent Mexican film industry. These two films were also the first to repeat the commercial
success of Like Water for Chocolate, which proved the Mexican cinema could sustain its profitability
and success. It is for these reasons that many see this period as being one of the most important and
successful in Mexican Cinema history, and saving it from what was seen as an almost certain

8. Heights Is Good For The Jews By George J. Sanchez
The assigned readings offered an engaging view of the new suburban life emerging in California
during the postwar years of the 1940s and 1950s. During this time, California was becoming heavily
populated and was experiencing an increased demand for housing. In Holy Land, D.J. Waldie
discussed the rise of the suburbs in Southern California, the creation of tract housing and shopping
centers, and the 1950s illusion that everyone could be middle class (Waldie, 4 85). As suburban areas
were developing and emerging within Southern California, a neighborhood was challenging the
conservative norm of the time by allowing racial diversity within the area. In What s Good for Boyle
Heights is Good for the Jews, George J. Sánchez s tells the forgotten history of Boyle Heights, a
suburb of Los Angeles, praised for being one of America s first communities to embrace racial
diversity. During a time of severe bigotry against African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latino
Americas, Jewish residents of Boyle Heights were able to respect and accept minorities of color living
within their community (Sánchez, 633 657). The postwar years in California demonstrated the
extraordinary power the state had in developing suburbs and how a small district within the Los
Angeles area was able to challenge the status quo on racial diversity.
I was intrigued to read George J. Sánchez s What s Good for Boyle Heights is Good for the Jews for
its social and racial significance. For example, in the

Solutions to Reduce Drunk Driving Over the years in New Orleans, drunk driving was 50% of the
reason for deaths that occurred in the city. The Council of the greater New Orleans job is to prevent
the alcohol and drug abuse that goes on in the city of New Orleans to promote a safe environment for
the families, individuals, and safe communities (linkedin.com). The definition of drunk driving is
defined as operating a motor vehicle while one s blood alcohol content is above the legal limit set by
statute, which supposedly is the level at which a person cannot drive safely (thefreedictionary.com).
Everyone agrees that drunk driving is a dangerous thing in America and it is harming innocent people.

What kinds of foods and eating practices are considered as the world s healthiest food and way of
eating and how they are accepted by global nations? According to Callahan s article, Eating Dirt ,
eating dirt can be seen as pathological or maladaptive. Also, eating dirt may not be adapted culturally
and religiously; however, there are some adaptive benefits by eating dirt. Western countries considered
eating dirt, which is called geophagy, as a disease because microbes and bacteria in the soil are
pathological (Callahan, 2003, p. 165). Likely, there are foods and eating practices that are widely

According to the article written by Louis Evan Grivetti, if Nigeria is a strong nation nutritionally and
America is an emerging country with shortages of food, American will receive foods such as terminate
porridge, locust bread, beetle soup (Grivetti, 1981, p. 61). This article indicates that although insects
are very nutritious, it may not be considered as foods to American because their cultural eating habits
are different than Nigerians. Callahan defines pica as a disease only because we believe normal
undiseased persons would not eat anything but traditional human foods; some of those who do, some
of the time, are at considerable risk because of their unusual appetites (2003, p. 165). Callahan s
definition of pica explains food items, soil, as an example and eating habits may differ culturally.
Especially, geophage benefits human body by providing calcium and other minerals (Callahan, 2003,

and there are 1,600 species of insects are eaten depends on culture (2013, p.142). Moreover, the
concentration of nutritional value is much higher than normal human food. The concentration of

Very low carbohydrate diets or ketosis diets have become increasingly popular for weight loss. There
is evidence from individual trials about the benefits and risks of a low carbohydrate diet verses a fat
restricted diet (2).The objective of this paper is to discover whether low carbohydrate diets have more
beneficial health related solutions verses a fat restricted diet. In one study, a traditional low fat diet
was compared to a low carbohydrate diet amongst people who have type two diabetes. The results
show that only a low carbohydrate diet provided significant improvement of the inflammatory state
and type two diabetes. In another study,Evidence supports a low carbohydrate diet for weight loss and
improvement in traditional cardiovascular disease. The effects of a low carbohydrate diet and a low fat
diet were examined for 12 months among 148 obese adults free of diabetes and cardiovascular
disease. At 12 months participants of low carbohydrate diet had significantly greater increases in
adiponecin than those on a low fat diet, as resulting low carbohydrate diet had a similar or greater
improvement then standard low fat diet. In another study, 148 men and women without cardiovascular
disease or diabetes were put into either low carbohydrate diet or low fat diet. Both groups received

When I first started to read The New Misandry I thought I was not going to like it. I was immediately

helplessness, and although you can bully or shame people into not showing their anger, the only way
to stop the anger is to stop the hurt (Russ 169). This reminded me of The Uses of Anger by Audre
Lorde. Tactically, I do think angry can be tool for change, but I disagree that Misandry could be a
productive label to use. I can see why some people would hate men, but that does not mean I think it is
healthy the person harboring all of that hatred. I want to turn to the idea of hating Patriarchy, but I m

18. Advancements in Prosthetic Limbs
CHAPTER 1 Introduction
Prosthesis is a term used for replacing a human body part which has been damaged or cut accidently
with an artificial one. Hybrid prosthetic limb is a combination of mechanical and electrical circuit in
which a controller gives command to electrically driven motor for the gripper opening and closing.
Signal for the gripper opening or closing is acquired from the other shoulder movement. A strap on the
shoulder is tied to a string which switches on or off the limit switch to give a trigger signal. This
trigger signal actuates the motor in the gripper to perform open or close operation.
In the past few years prototype has been going under many modifications. Last year it was completed
but few flaws were there. Spring Mechanism was used by previous degree but it was not reliable as
due to excess use spring lost its elasticity and could not be used for triggering. Spring mechanism was
also not aesthetically good. A lot of aesthetics was to be done. To cater for this problem we used limit
switch for efficient triggering and made compact circuitry using 8 pin controllers and added much to
aesthetics of limb.

energy. Hydroelectric energy is the most efficient for many reasons. Hydroelectric energy s power fuel
is water, which does not give off harmful chemicals or waste in the air or water; keeping our planet

I would not choose solar energy for my city for many reasons. Solar panels still gives off pollution
produced as a result of manufacturing, transportation, and installation. The production of energy is
rather noisy from the use of fuels. Solar energy can only be used during daylight hours. Bad weather
can decrease the efficiency of solar energy. Modern solar panels are only around 20% efficient. The
initial investment of solar cells is extremely high. Solar energy has too many cons to be the best
possible source of energy.
Coal is also a very destructive source of energy, and is definitely not the supreme source. Coal is a non
renewable resource. Coal creates the most CO2 in the environment. This destroys the ozone layer and
leads to many climate problems. CO2 is toxic at concentrations above 5 percent. Coal is also the
largest contributor to global warning. Coal causes mass destruction of the environment around coal
mines. Coal mining is the 2nd highest emitter of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Coal mining has
high levels of radiation. Coal plants energy sources release the more radiation than any other energy
source! Wind power is a very inconsistent energy source. The wind is unsteady and unpredictable.

21. Thesis About Billiards
Billiards in the Philippines Efren Bata Reyes, Francisco Django Bustamante, Dennis Orcollo, and
many more. Anyone who watches the sport of Billiards knows the names mentioned above. They
helped bring the Philippines on to the world stage of Billiards. They made the Filipinos rejoice with
their victories and the Filipinos cry with their setbacks. But one has to wonder, how did this sport once
made this country crazy? How did this sport brought the Filipino dream on to greater heights? In this
essay, we will talk about the rise of the sport of pool here in the Philippines. Pocket Billiards, also

Reyes, together with his great pal and fellow Billiard legend Francisco Bustamante, won many
tournaments in the coming years and established the Philippines as one of the great powerhouse in the
sport of Billiards. Reyes had great matches with rival Fong Pang Chao of Chinese Taipei in the San
Miguel Asian 9 Ball tour. Bustamante on the other hand has captured his legacy and the admiration of
Filipinos because of his victories and his flamboyance in the game. Bustamante also holds the world
record for having the most powerful break shot in Billiards. Django had the chance to be the 2nd
Filipino world champion in the World 9 Ball Pool Championships in 2002 however, he lost the finals
to the American, Earl Strickland with the score of 17 15. Unknown to many, while the tournament was
going on, Bustamante received the news that her baby died. He strongly considered forfeiting the
tournament but was persuaded by the people close to him to continue on with the tournament. Despite
the 2nd place finish, I am pretty sure that Bustamante made this country proud. During the early
2000s, many Billiard halls were renovated and constructed to accommodate

3. What value does the process deliver to its customer(s)?
The customer may retrieve their prescriptions in a timely manner that allows for them to quickly
receive their order around a schedule that works for them. It also allows them to seamlessly receive
their prescriptions by leaving the negotiation up to the doctor, insurance, and the pharmacist to ensure
that all the needs are met before the patient receives their prescription, meaning that the only thing the
patient is responsible for is payment, not the process.
4. What are the possible outcomes of this process?
There are several possible outcomes:
1. The patients insurance will cover the entire cost of the prescription(s) and the patient will not have

23. Economic Growth And Economic Development
Economic growth refers to an increase in the capacity for an economy to produce goods and services
as compared from one period of time to another. It can be measured either in nominal terms which
include inflation, or in real terms that are adjusted for inflation. It is mainly influenced by
unemployment, inflation, technology levels, rate of investment, population growth rate, among other
factors. These factors are used further to explain the differences in the varying level of output per
capita between and among countries, and explain why some countries are economically growing faster
than others. These factors are best represented in both the theoretical and empirical forms through the
neoclassical endogenous growth models (Steil, 2013, n.p.).
Economic growth revolves around business cycle which include the following phases; depression,
growth or expansion, boom and recession. During economic downfalls such as recession and
depression phases, it is evident that aggregate demand for both goods and services might be
insufficient thus leading to unnecessarily high unemployment rates, low investments and potential
losses of economic output. At this phase the economy of a country goes down as some of the
investments and savings are used to cater for other basic necessities. Inflation also pins down the
growth further as the purchasing power of the current level of income is greatly reduced. As explained
by the IS/LM model in the general theory by John Hicks, there are some

24. The Thin Line Between Child Abuse And Abuse
The Thin Line Between Disciple and Abuse Child abuser or an unfit parent are the words that come to
mind, followed by disapproving looks and scornful stares, whenever a parent admits to using corporal
punishment. Corporal punishment is an infliction of pain as punishment for unacceptable behavior, an
offense, or wrongdoing. The punishment being administered by the parent or guardian can range in
severity from a pop on the back of the hand to a belt or switch to the heinie. Although corporal
punishment is a painful means of punishment, the issue here is whether or not it can be seen as
justifiable when it comes to parents choosing to use it as a disciplinary tool at home. Whether or not a
parent should spank their child has been quite a controversial ... Show more content on

Psychologist Elizabeth Thompson Gershoff, PhD, of the National Center for Children in Poverty at
Columbia University, looked into the positive and negative behaviors that are associated with corporal
punishment. In doing so, she found strong associations between corporal punishment and the eleven
child behaviors and experiences. (Gershoff par.3) Those eleven behaviors and experiences include,
immediate compliance, moral internalization, quality of relationship with parent, physical abuse from
the parent, mental health, aggression, criminal behavior, antisocial behavior, abuse of own children,
and abuse of spouse (Gershoff par.2). Ten of those behaviors are negative and the only positive
behavior is the immediate compliance from the child. Gershoff states that her findings do not give
concrete evidence that all children who have received corporal punishment have turned out to
aggressive or a delinquent. Therefore, there are entirely too many factors that come in to play.
Whether or not the parent and child have a close relationship, if the parent is able to control their
temper while spanking the child, the different forms of corporal punishment, and etc. However, each
parent has their own thought, ideas, and beliefs on how to discipline their child. The act of corporal
punishment itself is different across parents parents vary in how frequently they use it, how forcefully

articulated reasons, I chose intellectual questioning as my greatest motivation for the study, and
appreciation for the arts as the least significant factor associated with the study of religion (Molloy,

Although religious beliefs vary from person to person, the study of different religious beliefs allows
for a greater spiritual knowledge within one s own beliefs, thus providing the greatest motivation for

Cloning is the production of one or more individual organisms that are genetically identical. The
copied organism, which has the same genetic code as the original, is called a clone. In the last two
decades, cloning technology has been becoming more refined, and has been broadly applied in
agriculture, human health, and many other fields. Breeding by cloning means being able to directly
reproduce an animal with a desirable set of genetic traits. The world s most famous clone is Dolly the
sheep, who was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. This idea of being able to clone
animals was encouraged by wanting to bring back extinct animals such as the wholly mammoth and

27. Reflection In Computer Science And Engineering
Stuck in between majors at the beginning of the quarter, and desperately needing another credit to
compete my schedule, I stumbled upon this seminar and added it to my already stem filled schedule.
Hoping to gain value on what a potential major could be for me, I went to the first week of class and
was immediately impacted by the presenters for the College of the Environment. I wish to reflect back
on this presentation as well as Professor Richard Ladner s presentation in Computer Science
engineering and Professor Wendy Thomas s presentation in bioengineering. The first week of class
immediately brought with it an important presentation to me on the topic of Diversity in stem. As an
existing pre engineering student at the time of the presentation I had a very narrow misconception as
to what the field of engineering entails and the majors that are available within in. During the
presentation, I learned that the College of the Environment actually contained its own form of
engineering, environmental engineering, that is recognized as the only engineering major outside the
School of Engineering here at the University of Washington. This was crucial to me because it
immediately broadened my horizon, I have always had an interest in the environment and this allowed
me to research a new potential major that could intertwine my interest in science with my background
in the outdoors. The second presentation that affected me was the presentation by Wendy Thomas, and

28. Grace Stewart In The Film The Others
The Others is a suspense horror film which is set in Jersey, Channel Islands immediately after WWII
in 1945. Grace Stewart, a loving and a formidable mother of two photosensitive children; Anne and
Nicholas, lives together with her children in a huge mansion. One day, all of Grace s servants
mysteriously vanish overnight, so she hires three new servants to take their places. The entry of these
new servants triggers a series of strange and supernatural events, which force Grace to confront and
accept the truth.
A character that I have found extremely admirable in the film The Others, was Anne. In the film, Anne
is an extremely strong character, who has the courage to fight for the truth and for her herself, no
matter the consequences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The whole plot is tied very closely to this idea and this idea gives the audience a view on how the war
can destroy families. The effects of war are clearly shown through effect it had on Grace s character.
Grace is first affected by the war, when it stole her family; they moved to a new place but fail to
contact her ever again. Grace is further devastated and is sent into depression, when her beloved
husband is taken away from her to fight in the war. This resulted in her taking up all responsibility of
the house as well as leaving her no with whom she can share her miseries with. Her pain is very
clearly seen when she say you already left us once, you can t again to her husband s ghost. Her plea
evidently shows her pain and her longingness for support to bear the burden and loss. This burden,
pain, misery and loss eventually leads her to insanity! These events in her life showed me the effect
that war can have on people s lives; the pain, loss and burden they have to bear. This made sympathise
with the victims of war and helped understand their pain, which I feel is as equally as harsh as being
up in the front as they have to live with the memories of the dead. It would be is completely
unbearable, as I can t even imagine my life without my parents, family and friend, and these families

National ID, a bad idea....
In today s world, we can say that the main danger to privacy, security for people who lives in free
democratic societies can come from the system that will create and apply supposedly very high tech
national ID card.
The main purpose of National ID card system in a country is to develop nationwide security, decrease
crime rate, reveal the terrorists, and guard against illegal immigrants. NID system has been used
conducting regular official transactions between government agencies and citizens, with benefits
claimed in the areas of convenience, cost saving or fraud reduction. NID could be a combination of

Then, where is the privacy?
A national ID card would as a practical matter collect a person s records from a number of databases
in computers, which have been intentionally kept separate over the years as a privacy measure into
one large file available to all. And such collection of data practically invites abuse from every level of
governmental offices. It will be easy for the criminal hackers to steal someone else s data, once this
system operates. Unauthorized sale of personal data will be normal in practice once these database are
linked.
If the card is used to check the information against a central database, then the security of this
database will become crucial. For a person, the database should be accessible nationwide in order to
support security checkpoints all over the country. Therefore it will have to be on some networking
system. The security necessary to prevent people from breaking into such a responsive networking
system would be almost impossible to achieve in real life. For this reason, the national ID card system
creates security risks. That would otherwise not exit.
The ID card would be used not just by the government and the security agents, but also by the
employers, schools, hospitals, banks, hotels, etc as their primary ID cards. Virtually,

This means that every month for the last 2 years, 6.2 new luxury hotel were built in the world. Hotels
where each guest may easily fancy himself as prince surrounded by a flock of courtiers (Sherman,
2007, p. 26) are being required more and more every day. The World Luxury Index (2014) revealed
that the global consumer interest for the luxury hospitality industry grew 7.7% in one year.
The numbers don´t lie, the luxury hotels industry is growing fast. But, are they positioning themselves
correctly in the consumer s head? Are they targeting the right client segment? And what are the
triggers they use to attract their consumers?
To answer these questions, I chose two luxury hotels brands. I will evaluate and compare them
covering the brands personalities and positioning, and analyze what these brands do to motivate the
consumers in their purchase decision. The two brands chosen were The Ritz Carlton and the South
African Lodge Londolozi. These very different choices were made considering The Forbes Travel
Guide Star Awards definition of Luxury Hotel; it defines them as those that provide a memorable
experience through virtually flawless service and the finest of amenities. In these hotels, the staff is
perceptive, involved and passionate, willing to go that extra mile. They were both designed with the
guest s comfort in mind, investing special attention to quality.

33. Betrayal In Kelly Link s The Summer People
Betrayal Have you ever been betrayed by someone that you trusted? The Summer People , a fairy tale
short story written by the author Kelly Link, portrayed the characters in a way that be can be greatly
related. Throughout the story, she used several literary elements, such as symbols, allusions, and
dictions to help the readers to understand the moral of the story. The main character, Fran, was bonded
with the faith to be the caretaker of the summer people, and there is no possible way that she can
escape from them. Despite the kindness of her friend, Ophelia, Fran decided to use her to gain
freedom from the summer people. Ophelia has always been truthful to Fran, even though Fran bullies
her during the beginning of the story. At the end, Ophelia was betrayed by Fran and forced to take
over her responsibilities of the summer people. In an e mail interview conducted by Journal of the
Fantastic in the Arts with Kelly Link by the editor, Brian Attebery, explained the style of her writing.
Link stated, The primary goals of fiction whether it s fantasy or realism or whatever are to entertain, to
raise or answer question, to unsettle or to comfort, to communicate. The tool set changes. The goal
varies too, and that s independent of genre (qtd. In Attebery 414). The statement from Link gives the

As I was walking down market street near twin peaks, I saw this funny looking man. He had raggedy
clothes, long white beard and he seems to be lost. When I approached him, I asked him sir, are you
ok? he responded. I don t know what happened, yesterday I was having a drink fell to sleep and today
I have this beard and everything looks different. He asked, where am I? I responded, you are in san
