love sonnet to that of hatred, resentment, and lust. It seems more in line with the reality and harshness
of falling in love, as opposed to the traditional googly eyed admiration of a lover. Since Shakespeare
avoids this fictional theme, he gives readers a good reason to believe his Sonnets may actually be true.
In Shakespeare s Sonnets, the pain experienced emotionally and physically contributes to the realistic
nature of his words. Specifically addressing the Dark Lady, the speaker expresses a more mature love
unlike the relationship between him and the young man. Readers are warned about the dangers of lust
in the love triangle, but the speaker is content with the Dark Lady s affairs rather than the young man
s. In Sonnet 138, the speaker says, On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed/But wherefore say
not I that I am old?/Oh love s best habit is in seeming trust (8 10). In their relationship, love is

In Claude McKay s The White City, the beauty he perceives in the city is juxtaposed with the reality
that dwells in it. From a distance, McKay views the city of his dreams, he describes it having towers
as high they touch the clouds, though, the city s environment fills him with hatred it is the only thing
keeping him alive . Although, he describes it as heaven in the white world s hell (Arp, 892). The
strong opposing connotation McKay notes, symbolizes the atmosphere in the city he so desires. His
heaven would be what the people in the city would consider hell . Since the poem was written during

to be a place where blacks can be mixed with the whites, which for the white city it would be hell.

American colonies were under British rule, they were subject to the almost tyrannical British
government, in which they were not fully represented. After the colonies achieved independence, two
main political factions emerged: the Republicans and the Federalists. The Republicans, scarred by the
overbearing British government, advocated for a weak federal government with individual state
governments, which prevented the concentration of power in a single party and promoted a form of
