INTRODUCTION
HUMAN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT OR
ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT ON THE
ENVIRONMENT INCLUDES:
impacts on biophysical environments,
biodiversity and
other resources.
The term anthropogenic means an effect
or object resulting from human activity.
 FACTORS:
HUMAN IMPACT ON
ENVIRONMENT
Factors contributing to ENVIRONMENTAL LOSS are:
 DEFORESTATION,
 OVER-POPULATION,
 WASTE,
 POLLUTION,
 OVERUSE/WASTAGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES,
 ENERGY INDUSTRY etc....
DEFORESTATION
DEFORESTATION
 Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of
trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use.
 Deforestation occurs for many reasons:
 used or sold as fuel
 used as pasture for livestock
 plantations of commodities
 Settlements, etc.
OVER-POPULATION
https://www.youtube.com/w
atch?v=B7lrCMoZKUU
EFFECTS OF OVER-
POPULATION (negative).
 Human overpopulation occurs if the number of people in a
group exceeds the carrying capacity of a region occupied by
that group.
 Environmental pollution
 Loss of habitat
 Over usage of resources
 High farming practices (soil degradation)
 Inadequate clean drinking water and sanitation
 Deforestation (creating a living space)
WASTE
Wastes is a term used for
unwanted materials.
Examples includes:
 municipal solid waste (household trash/refuse),
 hazardous waste
 wastewater (such as sewage, which contains bodily
wastes, or surface runoff)
 radioactive waste, and others.
These examples of wastes affect our environment when
dumped in wrong places e.g. near water sources.
POLLUTION
WATER POLLUTION
 Water pollution is the contamination of
water bodies.
 Water pollution occurs when pollutants
are discharged directly or indirectly into
water bodies without adequate
treatment to remove harmful
compounds.
 Water pollution affects plants and
organisms living in these bodies of water.
AIR POLLUTION
 Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air.
Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold
spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major
part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's
also called smog. Some air pollutants are poisonous.
 CAUSED BY :
 Smoke from factories
 Producing electricity
 Vehicles on the road
 Burning of fossil fuels etc.
LAND POLLUTION
 Land pollution is the deterioration (destruction) of the
earth's land surfaces, often directly or indirectly as a
result of man's activities and their misuse of land
resources
 Examples:
 Litter found on the side of the road.
 Illegal dumping in natural habitats.
 Damage and debris caused from unsustainable mining
and logging practices.
 Oil spills that happen inland.
OVERUSE OF
NATURALRESOURCES
 the depletion of natural resources has
become a major focus of governments
and organizations such as the United
Nations.
The depletion is caused by
Electricity production
 Mining,
 petroleum extraction,
 Fishing,
 Forestry etc..
AND NOT FOR
HOW?
 RECYCLING
 REUSE
 REPLACING (E.G. AFORESTATION)
 EDUCATING PEOPLE TO WISELY UTILIZE THEM IN
ORDER FOR THEM TO RECOVER
 ETC.
GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND
GLOBAL WARMING
 CO2, water vapour, and other greenhouse gases reflect infrared
radiation back toward Earth; this is the greenhouse effect
 This effect is important for keeping Earth’s surface at a habitable
temperature.
 Due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities, the
concentration of atmospheric CO2 has been steadily increasing.
 Increased levels of atmospheric CO2 are magnifying the greenhouse
effect, which could cause global warming and climatic change.
 Global warming can be slowed by reducing energy needs and
converting to renewable sources of energy
HOW GLOBAL WARMING
AFFECT US?
 Temperature increases will have significant impacts
on human activities, including:
 where we can live
 what food we can grow
 how and where we can grow food
 where organisms we consider pests can thrive
NEED OF
CONSERVATION
 Conservation biology is the scientific study of the
nature and status of Earth's biodiversity with the
aim of protecting species, their habitats, and
ecosystems from excessive rates of extinction.
 Habitat conservation is a land management
practice that seeks to conserve, protect and
restore, habitat areas for wild plants and animals,
especially conservation reliant species, and
prevent their extinction, fragmentation or
reduction in range.
