How media products use and challenge conventions
1. Evaluation Question 1 - In what
ways do your media products use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. Poster - Text
From my textual analysis of Eden Lake I found that the
forms and conventions of horror film poster uses the three
colour palette of red black and white to connote the genre
well. Similar to Eden Lake, I have used red for the title and
black for the actors names. The fonts used generally tend
to be distorted fonts which I have also done.
From my textual analysis I have also learned that film
posters usually have a quote/short extract of a review
from a magazine to attract the audience.
Similar to Eden Lake I have used the same quote on
the trailer, and have used fonts and colours which fit
in with the rest of the poster to create a continuous
style.
3. Poster – Image
During the research and planning I found
that horror film posters clearly introduce
characters, particularly the main
antagonist and protagonist. As in the
poster for Eden Lake I have done this.
The lighting of the main image also hints
towards genre and narrative themes in
both the Eden Lake poster, and my poster Similarly to the Eden Lake poster, I
have introduced the main antagonist
and protagonist, and have given away
an idea of the narrative.
4. Trailer
From the trailer for Eden Lake I have found
that light is used to signify the genre, going
from bright lighting when introducing
character and location to darker lighting
when the editing pace quickens.
Following forms and conventions, I have
included this element in my trailer to
reflect professional practice.
5. Trailer - Intertitles
I have followed the forms and
conventions of the Eden Lake
trailer by using the same font
throughout all of the intertitles
of my trailer.
However, unlike Eden Lake I
have used the same fonts and
colours as on my film poster,
this is to create a continuous
theme throughout.
I have also followed the forms
and conventions through using
distorted fonts throughout.
6. I have swapped images for my
poster and magazine cover from my
flat plans as these images suited
these products best.
Again similarly to
professional practice I
have followed the three
colour rule.
I have used some of the forms
and conventions of a real media
product as I have used sell lines I have also used a larger font for the title of the
