The Department of Agriculture presented to the President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir on ensuring food security through modern farm technologies and utilizing the region's agro-climatic potential. The goals are to improve existing farming systems through sustainable resource use, capacity building of farmers, and facilitating access to quality inputs. The department is responsible for agricultural education, research, protection from pests and diseases, soil conservation, mechanization, statistics, and more. Major achievements include the provision of certified seeds and inputs, fruit plant production, and the establishment of markets. Ongoing activities involve soil testing, pest management, seed production, and training farmers.

1. Provision of certified agricultural inputs for 7,600 acres (7,600
bags Wheat seed & 7600 bags DAP) on 50% cost sharing basis
for Mirpur division during Rabi 2018-19 season.
2. Achievements of Fruit Development Program (FDP:
I. 1,288,477 wild plants were converted into improved quality
fruit plant by Top working
II. 1,573 progeny orchards have been established on farmers
field.
III. 776 farmers and 111 departmental staff were trained in
budding and grafting techniques.
IV. Survey of 607 villages completed for enlistment recording
of wild fruit flora
V. 769 farmers trained in Orchard Management Techniques

• Summer Vegetables present in the farm will be
affected
– Fertilizer, pesticide and other inputs stores are closed
– Extension services are not available
– Farm to market movement of produce is not possible
• Transplanting of certain summer Vegetables still
in the nursery is affected.
• Negligence of Fruit orchards will affect
production (Pest management, hoeing and
fertilization may not be carried out)

• Wheat harvesting operation in AJK (usually April
– May) will be jeopardized because of
– Restricted movement of farm labour
– Non availability/mobility of farm machinery
• Limited number of wheat threashers/harvesters available in
State
• Restriction of machinery entering from Punjab
– Restricted movement of buyers from Punjab
– Limited movement of produce from farm to market
– Due to loss of production more pressure on Food
department for import
36. COVID19 Impact ……..
• Maize Cultivation operation will be affected
– Maize is cultivated late April and May on high altitudes while end of
May and June in low lying areas
– Cultivation operation will be affected due to non
availability/movement of farm machinery and closure of farm
machinery workshops
– Economic slow down will affect farmers buying capacity of good seed
and fertilizer
– Availability of certified Maize seed will be limited
– Fertilizer, pesticide and other inputs are not available due to
• Closure of agriculture stores and shops
• Restricted movement of inputs from Punjab (major input manufacturer and
supplier)
– Extension services are not available
– Distribution of Maize seed and urea fertilizer on subsidized rates will
be affected
– Maize demonstration plots may not be cultivated
