This presentation focuses on the links between place, song, and language in Tibet, examining how social diversity is represented in musical constructions of place, and how this impacts on the maintenance of that diversity – specifically, linguistic diversity – in Tibet. I take as my starting point the observation that Tibet is linguistically diverse, but culturally integrated, and that song played a crucial role in this integration. Many speakers of non-Tibetic minority languages across the plateau traditionally sang in Tibetan, giving the language the status of what I call a ‘singua franca’ – a sung, rather than spoken, common language. Lyrics in traditional Tibetan songs expressed visions of place and space that described, and ascribed positive value to, linguistic and other forms of social diversity in Tibet. These visions of place, encoded in song, and reproduced amongst Tibet’s diverse populations, including its linguistic minorities, were part of a broader ideological environment of ‘banal cosmopolitanism’ in pre-modern Tibet. Since the late twentieth century, however, the lyrics of Tibetan songs began to imagine space and place in terms of a national geobody - a bounded, internally homogenous unit populated by people that speak the same language, share a common history (of descent), and share the same identity. Importantly, language - the Tibetan language - is portrayed as the soul or life-force of this geobody. This new expression of place in song, focused on a national geobody enlivened by a single language, is part of a pervasive environment of ‘banal nationalism’ in Tibet that has placed Tibet’s linguistic minorities under significant assimilatory pressure. Now, instead of singing themselves into a place within the diverse Tibetan world, Tibet’s linguistic minorities are singing their own alienation from the national geobody. The region’s ‘singua franca’ has lost its function as a shared medium of exchange between diverse peoples, and has instead become a shibboleth for national belonging and boundary marking. In tracking this change, I will explore how visions of place in song contribute to the maintenance or suppression of linguistic and other forms of social diversity.

These visions of place, encoded in song, and reproduced amongst Tibet’s diverse populations, including its linguistic minorities, were part of a broader ideological environment of ‘banal cosmopolitanism’ in pre-modern Tibet. Since the late twentieth century, however, the lyrics of Tibetan songs began to imagine space and place in terms of a national geobody - a bounded, internally homogenous unit populated by people that speak the same language, share a common history (of descent), and share the same identity. Importantly, language - the Tibetan language - is portrayed as the soul or life-force of this geobody. This new expression of place in song, focused on a national geobody enlivened by a single language, is part of a pervasive environment of ‘banal nationalism’ in Tibet that has placed Tibet’s linguistic minorities under significant assimilatory pressure. Now, instead of singing themselves into a place within the diverse Tibetan world, Tibet’s linguistic minorities are singing their own alienation from the national geobody. The region’s ‘singua franca’ has lost its function as a shared medium of exchange between diverse peoples, and has instead become a shibboleth for national belonging and boundary marking. In tracking this change, I will explore how visions of place in song contribute to the maintenance or suppression of linguistic and other forms of social diversity.

Surveying: Object Principles & Types of Surveying; Site Plans, Plans & Maps; Scales & Unit of different Measurements.
Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.
Levelling: Instrument used Object of levelling, Methods of levelling in brief, and Contour maps.
Chapter 4
Buildings: Selection of site for Buildings, Layout of Building Plan, Types of buildings, Plinth area, carpet area, floor space index, Introduction to building byelaws, concept of sun light & ventilation. Components of Buildings & their functions, Basic concept of R.C.C., Introduction to types of foundation

Transportation: Introduction to Transportation Engineering; Traffic and Road Safety: Types and Characteristics of Various Modes of Transportation; Various Road Traffic Signs, Causes of Accidents and Road Safety Measures.
Chapter 6
Environmental Engineering: Environmental Pollution, Environmental Acts and Regulations, Functional Concepts of Ecology, Basics of Species, Biodiversity, Ecosystem, Hydrological Cycle; Chemical Cycles: Carbon, Nitrogen & Phosphorus; Energy Flow in Ecosystems.
Water Pollution: Water Quality standards, Introduction to Treatment & Disposal of Waste Water. Reuse and Saving of Water, Rain Water Harvesting. Solid Waste Management: Classification of Solid Waste, Collection, Transportation and Disposal of Solid. Recycling of Solid Waste: Energy Recovery, Sanitary Landfill, On-Site Sanitation. Air & Noise Pollution: Primary and Secondary air pollutants, Harmful effects of Air Pollution, Control of Air Pollution. . - Understand the goals and objectives of the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) curriculum, recognizing its importance in fostering practical life skills and values among students. Students will also be able to identify the key components and subjects covered, such as agriculture, home economics, industrial arts, and information and communication technology.

- 2. Linguicism • Linguicism may be at play in gate keeping situations where only one language or variety is recognized while others are excluded. Also, attitudes regarding the knowledgeableness, friendliness, and superior status of people based on the language they speak is a psychological manifestation of linguicism.
- 3. Linguicism • For example, in many post- colonial countries like Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and India, schools insist on teaching British or American English. The varieties used in everyday life, such as Sri Lankan, Chinese, or Indian English are censored from classroom use.
- 4. Native speakerism • Authenticity on language • Others are multilingual • Competency
- 5. Monolingualism • Reaction against GT method • shift from writing to speaking • Ban on other languages (USA Arizona) • Desire of colonized • Anglicism
- 6. Multilingualism • Not all languages are always equal in social life. • English that is gaining more power at the cost of other languages. • Cross cultural relations
- 7. English as lingua franca • ELF for information, not for identification • As transactional (business, communication) • As instrumental (SFC) • Not a threat to multilingualism • Local versions of English
- 8. Spread and decline of English language • Diverse languages are gaining prominence • English is being over- taken by the Chinese language in terms of number of speakers • Media (BBC, CNN are challenged by AL-JAZEERA and AL-ARABIYA)
- 9. Conclusion • social conditions have changed a lot since colonial times when English was imposed on other communities. • The new forms of globalization and social relationships in postmodern times have created favorable conditions for negotiability for other communities and languages.
- 10. • But it doesn’t mean that we live in a more democratic linguistic environment now. Issues of power are still relevant. Other languages and communities will always resist, modify, and reconfigure the power of English. • The struggle for power between languages will go on indefinitely, taking new forms and ramifications. The notion of LI reminds us that we must not ignore the role of power in language relationships. It alerts communities and policy makers to negotiate the relationship between languages in creative and critical ways.
