- 4. What is census? A Census is a procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. Census department of India works under ( Ministry of home affairs). They send members who visit each and every household and gather particulars by asking questions and filling up census forms.
- 5. Definition. The population composition means the structure of population that includes the factors such as occupation, sex, literacy level, health condition and income level.
- 7. The composition of population helps us to know: how many are males and females, which age group they belong to, how educated are they, where are they employed, what their income levels are, and what their health condition is.
- 8. Age structure: 1. Young dependent (aged below 15 years). 2. Working population (aged between 15 and 65). 3. Elderly dependent (aged above 65 years). The type of age structure has a direct influence on the future of a nation because countries with young population need to invest more in schools, while countries with older population need to invest more in the health sector.
- 9. Population pyramid: A population pyramid illustrates the age and sex structure of a country’s population.
- 10. Sex composition or sex ratio: Defined as the number of females per 1000 males in the population. Sex ratio is an important indicator of equity prevailing between male and female at a given point of time. India shows an uneven composition of population compared to most of the developed countries, as shown is 2011 census - 940 females per 1000 males. The reasons put forward was female infanticide, high maternal mortality and the neglect of girl babies.
