The Effect of Mulching on Soil Moisture Retention and Yield of Lettuce (Lactu...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different mulching materials on soil moisture retention and yield of lettuce at the greenhouse located at Luyengo campus of the University of Eswatini during the months of January and February, 2019. The treatments consisted of grass mulch (GM), Plastic mulch (PM), leaf debris mulch (LM), and no mulch (NM) which was used as a control. Each of the treatments had four replications. The organic mulch was applied at a thickness of 10 cm, and the plots for experiments were randomly selected. Each plant received 600 cm 3 of water every 3 days using a homemade drip irrigation system (equivalent to 6 mm per irrigation circle). Data on soil moisture content was collected using the gravimetric method every 3 days (before irrigation).The growth parameters of the lettuce plants that were collected weekly were plant height, leaf number and leaf area. Both wet weight and dry weight yield were determined for each plot at the end of the experiment (six weeks after planting). Data collected was coded and entered into SPSS computer software. Data analysis was conducted using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the least significance difference (LSD) test to determine if means were significantly different. The results showed that GM treatment had high mean moisture retention at 9.3%. It was followed by PM and LM at 8.9%. The lowest moisture retention was realized from the control (No mulching) at 7.9%.The differences in mean moisture retention was significant between NM and NM (p<0.05). The same pattern was observed for the growth parameters, where GN had highest values and the control had the lowest values. The wet mass yield was highest for GM, at 164.7 g. The yield from LM was 149.3 g. It was followed by PM at 141.3 g. The lowest yield was obtained from the control at 108 g. The difference in mean yields for GM and NM were significant (p<0.05). They were not significantly different for all the other treatments (p>0.050. It was concluded from the experiment that grass mulching resulted in improved moisture retention and high yields.

Diabetes is a rapidly and serious health problem in Pakistan. This chronic condition is associated with serious long-term complications, including higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Aggressive treatment of hypertension and hyperlipideamia can result in a substantial reduction in cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes 1. Consequently pharmacist-led diabetes cardiovascular risk (DCVR) clinics have been established in both primary and secondary care sites in NHS Lothian during the past five years. An audit of the pharmaceutical care delivery at the clinics was conducted in order to evaluate practice and to standardize the pharmacists’ documentation of outcomes. Pharmaceutical care issues (PCI) and patient details were collected both prospectively and retrospectively from three DCVR clinics. The PCI`s were categorized according to a triangularised system consisting of multiple categories. These were ‘checks’, ‘changes’ (‘change in drug therapy process’ and ‘change in drug therapy’), ‘drug therapy problems’ and ‘quality assurance descriptors’ (‘timer perspective’ and ‘degree of change’). A verified medication assessment tool (MAT) for patients with chronic cardiovascular disease was applied to the patients from one of the clinics. The tool was used to quantify PCI`s and pharmacist actions that were centered on implementing or enforcing clinical guideline standards. A database was developed to be used as an assessment tool and to standardize the documentation of achievement of outcomes. Feedback on the audit of the pharmaceutical care delivery and the database was received from the DCVR clinic pharmacist at a focus group meeting.

agricultural crops, it is necessary to adopt in-
situ moisture conservation techniques in
addition to the large scale soil and moisture
conservation and water harvesting structures
in the watershed.
3. The principle behind the recommendation of
different practices is to increase the infiltration by
reducing the rate of runoff, temporarily

water harvesting.
4. Earlier efforts for moisture conservation were
concentrated upon construction of various
types of bunds across the land slope to control
erosion and conserve soil.
All the erosion control measures however, led to
accumulation of water against the structures
rather than its proper and uniform distribution in
the interterraced area and at times led to
reduction in crop yields.
5. To overcome these problems the insitu
moisture conservation techniques are
recommended.
Generally, the sub soiling and deep digging
decreases the soil penetration resistance and
increases profile water use when compared with
conventional tillage.
6. In-situ moisture conservation
methods
To increase the moisture availability to the
agricultural crops in the individual farmer’s field
and to increase the infiltration and percolation of
rain water into the root profile, the in-situ
moisture conservation techniques are
recommended.
7. i) Deep tillage: Deep tillage means performing
tillage operations below the normal tillage depth to
modify the physical or chemical properties of a soil.
It includes tillage operations commonly referred to
as deep plowing, subsoiling, ripping, or row-till,
which are carried out on an as-needed basis.
8. ii) Mulching: Mulching is one of the simplest
methods to conserve soil moisture.A Mulch is
simply a proyective layer of a material that is
spread on top of a soil.Mulches can either be
organic- such as straw bark chips etc.or
inorganic like stones brick chips plastic.
The process is used both in commercial crop
production and in gardening, and when
applied correctly can dramatically improve
soil productivity.

10. iii) Basin listing: in this method of soil and
water conservations basins are constructed
using a special implement called basin
lister.These basin are constructed across the
slope. Basin listing provides maximum time to
rain water for infiltration into soil

This system helps the soil to preserve the water
level for a longer period. Holding the moisture
intact, the bed stimulates crops growth. This
system not only help in water conservation but
also help to adopt to changing climate.
12. v) Ridges and furrows:
It is an archeological pattern of ridges and troughs
created by a system of ploughing used in Europe during
the middle age, typical of the open field system.
13. vi) Compartmental bunding:
It means the entire field is divided into small
compartments with pre determined size to retain
the rain water where it falls and arrest soil
erosion. The compartmental bunds are formed
using bund former. The size of the bunds depends
upon the slope of the land compartmental bunds
provide more opportunity time for water to
infiltrate into the soil and help in conserving soil
moisture.
