1. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK,
WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?
2. • During the preliminary task the majority of the technology which I had learned to use was new to me. I had
limited knowledge on the different camera shots, and angles, the media codes and conventions and both
Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. By learning how to use all these new technologies, I was able to have a
better understanding to help produce my music magazine.
• Despite using Photoshop in the past, I didn’t know how to use it properly and create something that looked
professional. However, after completing my preliminary task I picked up many new skills allowing my to
create a music magazine front cover that looked more legit and professional.
• I also discovered different camera angles and techniques and the effects they have. The main image on the
front cover of my preliminary magazine is mid shot but on my music magazine I have used a medium close
up. Inside my magazine I have used long shots and close ups so there is a wide variety of camera shots.
This makes my magazine look more interesting since the photos are not of the same style. I have also kept
all the pictures in my magazine straight so the overall look on my magazine is very boxy and square.
However, on the double page spread I went around the picture on Photoshop with the magic wand tool so
text could fit around my image. I also learnt about camera lighting and how different lighting created certain
effects for specific moods. I chose to mainly use bright lighting which gave the realistic effect of a
professional photoshoot. It is important to create a certain mood with the lighting as it enables the audience
to be gratified by the magazine, thus making it a success. I also learnt how to use InDesign to create a
professional double page spread to produce an articulate article.
• Also, the clothing that my person was wearing on my preliminary task wasn't planned so it did not quite fit in
with my school magazine feel. Therefore, when I was taking photographs for my music magazines I made
sure that the clothing, hair and makeup fitted in with the genre of my magazine.
• So, since the preliminary task, I feel that I have grown in my experience of the usage of advanced software
and I have gained a brief insight into what it takes to produce a magazine publication.
3. This magazine includes minimal
amount of magazine conventions.
Doesn’t look
like a legit
magazine.
I created the front cover when I was new to
Photoshop which is clear as it doesn’t look
legit..
i.e no ISBN/date/issue number,
colour scheme isn’t coherent
The masthead is
unproductive, as it isn’t
the first thing any
costumer would notice,
also it’s on the side, and it
should be on the top – as
it’s noticeable there.
Although it includes a
website, it is not
clear.
Colour
scheme is
coherent
(as is the
font)
Masthead is
bold, and
much more
noticeable,
allowing it to
be the first
thing
someone
sees.
After doing a lot of research of other
magazines. This was my final magazine
cover...
