Evaluation question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Becky Tookey
2. I think that my preliminary task could be
largely improved with the skills that I have
now learnt from making my final magazine.
Although I liked the black and white theme of
the front cover the rest of the magazine does
not follow a strong theme and looking at the
two pages side by side it is hard to tell they are
from the same magazine.
How good do you think your preliminary task was?
Be honest and give detail.
3. I had never used InDesign before which is what
I made my contents page on and I found it very
had to use as all of the functions were new to
me however, I had used Photoshop a lot
previously so the making of the front cover was
not as stressful and messy.
Had you used the software before this task or was this
the first time How easy or difficult was it to use?
4. For the college magazine it was easy to find a
target audience because I knew what a college
student would look for in a magazine however,
for the music magazine opening the genres up
to a larger scale was more difficult to accurately
represent. I focused a lot more on colour and
placement in my music magazine so that it fit
with the genre and audience I was trying to
reach.
When you started your music magazine task what did you realise
about market and audience research that you didn’t focus on as much
for your student magazine?
5. I tried to stick to a solid theme and colour
scheme and this helped my magazine to look
more professional and after learning more
about semiotic and doing research on it I was
able to incorporate what I had learnt into my
work. Looking into codes game me the idea to
put a camera lense into the O of Photo bomb.
How did you use your semiotic knowledge and awareness of
codes and conventions to produce work which looked
professional?
6. I used each lesson to do each section of my
magazine, I started on my front cover with the
photos and then the text and then I did the
same for the contents page and double page
spread and then in the final lessons I made sure
everything was neat and to a good standard.
How did you make use of time effectively?
7. In the beginning I had never used a
professional camera so it was difficult to get
focused and clear shots for my magazine
however when it came to the music magazine I
had gotten more experience and it was easier to
get the shots I wanted for my magazine.
How did you improve your
photography skills?
8. I learnt how to use InDesign however I didn’t
use it for my final magazine because I did not
like using the software.
My Photoshop skills have improved by using
more varied tools in different ways so that I
could achieve a whole new different look for
the magazine.
How did your Photoshop and In
Design skills improve?
9. At first I found it difficult to get started on the
article however once I had written the
introduction the rest of it cam naturally and
flowed like a real article.
How did you develop journalism skills
to produce the article?
10. It helped to build up the basic layout of each
page as a starting point and this helped me to
assemble the rest of the pages as well. House
style was essential.
How much more important was house
style when producing your final piece?
11. I think that because it had a strong theme
throughout the magazine looks much more
professional and it flows naturally as a
magazine.
How much more professional does your
main product look and why is this the case?
