2. Pre-production
• What are you making? For this project I will be creating a
youth culture magazine, featuring and showcasing young
artists work. I will do 3 photoshoots as well as this produce an
advert for the middle of the magazine. The mag will include a
front cover, contents page, 3 double page spreads, and a back
cover.
• Why? The purpose of this magazine is to capture life and
activities of the youth in Britian to showcase what its like as
well as promote people’s work.
• Who is it for? The audience of this magazine is anyone from
ages 16-24 as I feel the conent within the magazine will most
likely be relatable to them.
• Where will it appear/on what? When this magazine is
complete I will publish it on issuu or blogger. I may try and
produce one physical copy depnding on budget and time.
Reflection:
3. Pre-production: Fonts
This is one of a potential three fonts I will use on my magazine for
the cover title. I chose this on as it includes a minimalistic style while
also been fairly bold to draw attention from the viewer. I feel this
font is similar to other youth magazines such as ’Dazed Magazine’
This is the second font out of the three that I may use on the cover. Similarly to
the previous font this one includes a minimalistic style while been much
bolder drawing more attention to the cover of the magazine. I would compare
to that of the font on the cover of i-d magazine.
The third and final font is much less minimalistic to the previous and is a lot less
bold meaning less attention is drawn. If this isn’t a font used on the cover of the
magazine it will have potential to be used on the inside of the magazine maybe for
the heading of a specific article
4. Pre-production: Potential cover designs
These are two are both potential options for the cover design of my magazine. Both of
these options feature a minimalistic style to allow the viewer to be intrigued by the
photo on the cover. The first design uses bold text so the reader knows what it is they're
reading as well as the issue and month. The second cover features a hand written title
that’s been teared out of paper to give the cover a unique look. If I was to do something
similar to this on my final cover I could experiment with different materials and
experiment with different pens until I had my desired look. Both of these are strong
options for the final product and when I have shot my cover I will decide which option
suits best.
5. Pre-production: Potential cover designs
These are two are both potential options for the cover design of my magazine. The first
cover features less of a minimalistic style in comparison to the previous two, while also
been slightly more informative. The second cover features less information than the first
but I feel it stays aimed at the target audience and isn't too formal. Target audience and
style of the cover will need to play a huge role when designing my final cover.
6. Pre-production:
This is the colour scheme from photos shot on film. All of the tones are much warmer than
anything that would be taken on a digital camera and aren’t as bold. These colours fairly
mellow due to been shot on film; meaning when I write an article the colours of the font on
the page will pop and be much more visible to the reader. To keep a minimalistic style,
similar to i-d, to my magazine I will keep my font colour either black or white depending on
the colour of the page, making It easier for the viewer to read.
7. Pre-production: Potential back cover designs
These are both potential back cover designs each similar style to the front covers I
designed. Both featuring the editors name as well the names of people featured in my
magazine. I personally prefer the second one as it still has a minimalistic feel to it while
also keeping its own unique twist.
8. Pre-production: Style sheet - Interior
Inner double page layout of a magazine
that will inspire mine. This features.
Minimalistic layout allows the photos to
speak for themselves. As well as this the
colour scheme matches the colours in
the photos, this is an idea I’d like to
replicate.
These are some shots from a recent photoshoot
that will feature in one of three double page
spreads in my magazine. These photos were shot
on dslr and then edited in post production to give
them more of a film look to match the tones of
other shots in the magazine. The page with these
shots on will feature a dark blue or green
background to represent the colours in the photo.
9. Pre-production: Style sheet - Outfits
Evisu jeans are a staple
piece of clothing within
youth fashion, to appeal to
my audience I will make
sure these jeans or this
brand is featured in
order to make it relatable
to the reader.
True Religion double stitch
straight leg jeans. These are
popular within youth fashion
today after making a comeback.
These jeans are usually paired
with Nike Tns. Once again these
will have a feature somewhere in
my magazine.
The outfits on
my models will typically be
based around a baggier
look.
