Connor proposes a magazine titled "OutBreak" focused on modern rock music. The name suggests popularity and spread like an infection. The target audience is primarily white British males aged 15-19 who enjoy rock music. For the cover, Connor plans to use caution tape and a hazmat symbol to incorporate a quarantine theme. The contents page will list articles in an organized but messy layout fitting the theme. The double page spread will also follow the theme but may need to be adjusted to feature artists. Connor has permission to photograph models posing as two bands to represent articles, including a rare female duo, at locations around campus and outdoors capturing a spooky atmosphere.

Formal Proposal…
Magazine Title:
After devising numerous possible titles for my magazine, my focus group and I agreed on the name
‘OutBreak’. This is due to numerous features. We believed that the name itself was very simple and
catching. The violence of the section “break” is very reflective of the genre that it would portray and
an outbreak may refer to some sort of traversable item; this suggests that the magazine is very
popular and spreads like an infection (almost like a magazine-‘fever’).
Magazine Genre:
Since the introduction and initiation of the coursework, I was determined on focussing my magazine
on rock music. This is as I am incredibly familiar with the genre and am a frequent purchaser of
competitor magazines such as Kerrang! and Rock Sound. I believe this would be an aid to me as I
would be more acquainted with conventions surrounding magazines of this genre. From this basis, I
started to consider several sub-genres. My audience research decided that I would be doing my
preferred option of ‘Modern Rock’. I am delighted that this has been chosen as I believe that I get
more leeway with artists and themes that I am including; the field is not too strict.
Magazine Target Audience Profile:
Target Audience Information-
• Age- 15 to 19.
• Gender- Both genders but largely male.
• Ethnicity- Primarily White-British.
• Lifestyle- Working and Education.
Profile-
The target male for OutBreak magazine would be 17 years of age and mature. He would be of white-
British origin and his time would predominantly focus on college tasks but has a part-time job in
which a small amount of his money would go towards purchasing magazines of this genre. His music
taste would be moderately stubborn as a whole but when considering rock as a genre, all sub-genres
are loved; he could listen to metal as much as he could punk. Some may consider this male to be
slightly quieter and reserved but upon conversation, this is contradicted by an ability to converse
easily, especially if the topic referred his favourite bands. He would almost always wear darker attire
but never over the top. This uniform would consist of black or grey skinny jeans, dark coloured
novelty t-shirts or fashionable tops and jumpers and either large black boots or more mainstream
shoes in a dark colour such as Vans, Converse, etc. This outfit would be held together by the
appearance of a subtle yet cliché beanie. The entire aesthetic would resemble a modern rock star;
his fringe would hang low concealing the forehead and the eye. Music is this male’s passion which is
facilitated by the consistent appearance of headphones or speakers near him.
Initial Ideas for the Front Cover:
For the cover of OutBreak, I would largely like to follow the usual conventions of such magazines.
This would include numerous coverlines with an overwhelming, obvious main coverline anchored to
the main image hoisted on the centre of the main cover. To break away from convention slightly and
create a sense of independence and originality, I would like to include other smaller images on the

front cover to reflect and convey the other coverlines. The masthead should illustrate the word
‘OutBreak’ in clear capitals. I had seen a similar idea but I plan on creating a mask for the masthead
outline then showing an image of liquid half filling the shot behind the outline. This would be subtle
but also effective as it follows the proposed them that I have in mind; if I surround my magazine with
some sort of hazmat/quarantine theme, the title would be more appropriate. This would be done via
caution tape found in quarantine zones somehow incorporated into the magazine. Also, the iconic
hazmat symbol could easily be used as brand recognition.
Initial Ideas for the Contents Page:
The contents page for OutBreak would follow the same theme to form consistency in a house style.
The masthead would be lessened in size and be placed at the top of the page. All of the desired
articles within this magazine would then be listed. I find it slightly more difficult to complete a
contents page as I am slightly stuck for layout ideas. I would like the layout to be organised yet
slightly messy to fit the theme. Pictures reflecting these articles will then be anchored to the main
stories. The article on the double page must also be included on the contents.
Initial Ideas for the Double Page Spread:
Once again, the double page spread would be following this theme but to perhaps less of an extent
as other magazine’s double page spreads are used to reflect the artist that is included. For example,
the Kerrang! double page spread that I analysed prior included Bring Me the Horizon on the double
page, their initially established theme was lessened to facilitate the colours and themes associated
with the artist. With a theme as strong and prolific as mine, I would struggle to lessen this subtly so it
may have to be a strong change.
Initial Ideas for the Photographs:
Prior to producing this document, I have gained permission from numerous people to photograph
them. So far, I have four models that are posing for two bands; I hope to gain more. These two
bands will be representative of two articles. One of the bands will consist of two female members,
which is incredibly rare, making that in itself an article-worthy story. I plan on taking images around
the college campus and even outside the radius. One of the most prolific locations will be the music
room. This contains valid props too and, with three of my models able to play instruments (two of
which have access to music easily), I am able to utilise these props if I wish. Outside of the college, I
plan to go to a wooded area to create almost a spooky and ominous atmosphere for the shoot. This
is reflective of the genre of music that the models are posing for.
