4. INTRODUCTION
• Refers to a yellowish discolouration of the
body tissues, including skin, sclera and
mucous membrane - ICTERUS
• Due to large quantities of bilirubin in the
exctracellular fluid
• Normal plasma concentration of :0.2-0.8
mg/dL
• Levels of bilirubin concentration
» > 1mg/dL (hyperbilirubinemia)
» > 2mg/dL (diffuse into tissue- JAUNDICE)

POST-HEPATIC
(OBSTRUCTIVE)
CONJUGATED REGURGITATION
9. PRE- HEPATIC JAUNDICE
• Also known as haemolytic jaundice
• Occurs before bile is made in liver
• Excess unconjugated bilirubin is produced
• Faster than the liver is able to conjugate it for
excretion

13. TREATMENT
• Treatments for jaundice, depending on the
underlying cause
• Prevent the rapid breakdown of red blood
cells that's causing bilirubin levels to build up
in the blood.
• E.g.
- Blood transfusion
