It’s really exciting to see so many people here today.
We’re going to talk about how to make the most of what LinkedIn has to offer – so you can get the job that you want now and in the future.
Before we dive into introductions, I want to say that our goal is for this material to be useful to a broad range of audiences. If you aren’t getting what you expected, please add your questions or comments in the chat. We will talk about about 20 mins and then take a short break for Q&A before proceeding on.
I am Minal Mehta.
I really enjoy helping people take the next step in their careers.
So, I feel like I have the perfect job right now. I spend a few hours a week coaching HBS students and alumni, and spend the bulk of my time at LinkedIn, where I can help people with their careers at scale.
At LinkedIn, I manage a team of Product Managers, leading a large cross-functional team to deliver great experiences on our content products – the products that help you stay on top of industry trends, learn from others and share your insights. I have a CS degree from Stanford and got my MBA from HBS in 2010.
My name is Rishi Jobanputra. I have my undergrad from UW and my MBA from INSEAD.
I'm currently a Director of Business Operations at LinkedIn, and I oversee monetization products
Before we get into the bulk of the presentation, I wanted to briefly give you all an overview of LinkedIn, and what we stand for
So at Linkedin, we draw a clear distinction between our mission and vision
Mission: overarching objective; it's realizable, it's measurable, and it's inspirational
Our mission is to: Connect the world's professionals to make them more product and successful
This goes beyond helping you find your dream job, but also making you great in the job you're already in
In terms of what's measurable, so far, we have north of 300M professionals on LinkedIn, and by our estimates, there are 680M knowldege workers in the world... so we've made a lot of progress against our mission, but we're still not over the goal line
As we get closer to the goal, we've spent a lot of time as a company thinking about how we can achieve our vision
First off, let me discuss what the vision means to us
vision: our dream, our true north, what keeps us coming back to work everyday
Our vision is to create economic opportunity for everyone in the global workforce
Notice the word "everyone", this goes beyond just "professionals" or "knowledge workers", but the entire 3.3B people in the global workforce
You'll hear Jeff talk a lot about this concept of an economic graph... what he means is that he wants LinkedIn to map the global economy
Imagine a platform that comprised of a profile for every person, every company, every opportunity at these companies, every skill required to obtain those opportunity, every higher education organization, and all the professionally relevant knowledge associated with each of these entities. With these elements in place, we can connect talent with opportunity at massive scale.
... this vision is what gets me out of bed every morning and excited to be part of LinkedIn
Thank you Rishi. Our vision to create economic for every member of the global workforce is why I come to work every single day as well.
Now that you understand what motivates us, let’s dive right into what we are going to cover today:
Step 1 to getting the most out of LinkedIn is to use it to share your story. We’ll talk about ways to set up your LI profile so you can stand out.
Next up is your network. This is the single most powerful thing that LinkedIn has to offer, and those who are good about not only growing, but also nurturing their network get a lot of value from our platform.
We will also talk about how you can use LI to stay on top of industry trends and get the type of information you need to do your work and get ahead in your career
Lastly, we’ll touch on specific tools you can use to get that next job.
Let’s start with Step 1 – your Profile.
Let me start off by saying that your profile is only as good as the work you put into it. And I don’t mean the time you take to format things correctly.
You are an asset that you are marketing, and you need to figure out what story you want to share about yourself. Once you have that clarity, you can use the tools on LI to bring out what you want to share.
Here, I have three examples of HBS alums who have done a great job showcasing their story.
Sasha is a full-time career coach. She also has done a lot of other things in her career – consulting, sales, BD. But here she brings out her coaching.
Indy is a venture capitalist, who has developed deep expertise in the Software as a Service space.
Pratik is a recent grad who is very much what they call a growth hacker. He’s made that clear here, and also indicated that he’s looking to hire an engineer interested in this.
I’m going to dive into some mechanics here. I’m going to use the example of Brent Grinna, one of my classmates from HBS. He has started and runs a company called Evertrue, which helps institutions with alumni relations and fundraising.
As you can see here, Brent has a profile picture. This greatly increases the chances of someone clicking onto your profile to see you
Next – spend some time on your headline. In addition to your name and profile picture, this is the thing that others will see in search before deciding whether to learn more about you.
In this next section, you can see that Brent has published some posts. We will touch on this in section 3 of our talk today, but quickly wanted to highlight how he used his blogpost on alumni giving to solidify that this is a space he knows a lot about
Please make time to write a summary. While the rest of the profile is pretty structured, this is the one place you can use to quickly define who you are and what you are looking for. We recommend that you keep this informal and in the first person.
The bulk of the profile is of course your work experience. You don’t need to add in everything you have ever done. Choose the roles that provide evidence of your story. For example, when I was in college, I worked in a lab in India developing a cream called Fair & Lovely – helping lighten skin. You will not find that on my profile!
Once you have decided what positions you want to add to your profile, make sure you add enough detail in each section so the reader gets a clear idea of you who you. You can add pictures and videos to showcase your work as well.
Endorsements are another section on the profile. Many people ask us about the value of an endorsement, given how easy it is to endorse.
When you look at someone’s profile, you’ll often find that their top 2-3 endorsements really reflect their skills.
So, add the skills that you want others to endorse you for!
On the flip side, endorsing others is a quick way to stay in touch.
If endorsements reflect quantity, then recommendations reflect quality
Get ~ 5 people who can speak highly of you and highlight the things you want on your profile to do so.
As an example, I started coaching with HBS in January this year. I worked very closely with this one student, Varun, to help him get his job at Facebook and negotiate his offer. The next thing I knew – all of Varun’s friends wanted to schedule appointments with me. I asked him to write me a recommendation so that others beyond his network can see what I bring to the table.
So, very tactically – as you ask for recommendations, be mindful that they are doing you a favor. We recommend a soft approach, and also helping the recommender by reminding them of things you might have done together.
Instead of having your linkedin profile having a URL with a random ID at the end, personalize it so that it’s easy to direct others to view this marketing material you have created for yourself.
About half the time people look you up, they are using their phones.
So - lastly, always look and see what your profile looks like on mobile.
Through all of this, our main recommendation is that you tailor your profile so that a person reading it understands your story.
However, if you have a well-written profile, you might start ranking higher in search engines as well – as you can see with Joseph here.
As HBS alum, I'm not worried about your ability to network. What i'd like to reinforce is that LinkedIn can help you nurture your network and that networks are crucial at every stage of managing your career
from Researching different career paths
to applying to jobs
to helping prep for interviews
to negotiating salary
to nailing your first 90 days at work
and finally to finding your next opportunity in/outside of your company
On a personal note, I can truthfully say i wouldn't be where I am without my network
My MBA alum network is what helped me get into LinkedIn
And now, my personal network with Minal has helped me take on a new role within LinkedIn as a Product Manager. Without Minal providing me a swift kick in the butt and helping me navigate the product organization, I would not be in the great position I am today
So.. networks are important, but they also need to be meaningful
Form connections with people you know, and that you have some sort of personal connection with.... don't be that analogy of the Nigerian Prince and spam your broader network
I recommend connecting with Friends, Alum, Co-workers, and Advisors
Generally, I don't recommend connecting with people you haven't met personally, unless you share a common bond or aspiration
On that note, when your are requesting a connection to someone who's not as close, immediate contact, you should write a personalized message.
Use this as an opportunity to:
remind them how you met
say something memorable about your encounter
explain why you're interested in connecting with them
keep it brief too.... no one wants to read an essay
Either way, LinkedIn has a word limit on connection requests... so if you manage to hit the word limit, rethink your message in entirety.
The other cool thing LinkedIn let's you do is keep notes on people; so i like to use LinkedIn as my own personal CRM
This is super helpful for people you don't see as frequently... reminding yourself about little personal things is a great way to keep the relationship warm
BTW, this information also carries over to our mobile Connected app, which i'll talk about in a bit, so the notes will be surfaced when and where you need them most, being your mobile device
So Linkedin recently acquired Newsle, which is a product that helps you know when your friends & colleagues make the news, and gives you a reason to nurture relationships
It connects to both your LinkedIn and Facebook accounts and send you updates about your network
Personally, I just started using it, and it's AMAZING
So here's a screenshot of a buddy from undergrad who I haven't talked to in a while... his company just raised $7.5M
It prompted me to shoot him a note and congratulate him and we ended up having a chat on the phone
This wasn't the intent of the conversation, he asked me if you I knew any seasoned sales professionals... because of this call, I can now pass that information on to other people in my network
Lastly, I want to talk about our mobile Connected app, which is another great tool to help you nurture your network
Connected is this really cool standalone experience that integrates with your calendar and gives you meeting intelligence about the people you're going to meet
Also, it provides you with reminders and insights about people in your network
I highly recommend downloading it. It's only available on iOS now, but will be available on Android soon
Great questions!
Let’s move on to Section 3 where we talk about how you use LI to stay on top of what’s going on in the business world and share your knowledge so you can build your own reputation.
Let’s start with the feed. This is your LI homepage on desktop or the first page you see when you open the LinkedIn mobile app
Everything you see here should either help you stay connected to your network or become more knowledgeable.
You can control what goes in your feed by taking a few actions.
If you are on desktop, you can go to the interests section of your navigation, and choose Pulse. There, you can navigate to the “Discover” section and follow people, channels and publishers that you are interested in hearing from on your feed.
You can also search for any company that you are interested in and follow it. Any updates from this company will now go into your feed.
Note that anything you follow also shows up on your profile. So, this is yet another way you can showcase your professional interests.
A great way to stay on top of industry trends is to join groups.
Within groups, you can have conversations with like-minded professionals on topics that are of mutual interest. You can directly message anyone in your groups if you want to take the conversation into more of a private arena.
Note that the groups you join are also visible on your profile – yet another way to showcase who you are.
We’ve talked a lot about content you can consume on LI, and also about conversations you can have within groups.
Now, let’s shift gears as to how you can use LinkedIn to share your knowledge and your insights, thereby building your reputation.
As we talked about earlier with Brent’s profile, the most involved way to showcase your expertise is to write a blog post on LinkedIn.
For more lightweight interactions, you can share content written by others, start a conversation by sharing a status update or comment on what others have written.
Lastly, we just want you to be aware that you can learn and share right from your phone.
You can share by hitting the little “in” button on most mobile websites. You can also participate in groups and read posts on the main LinkedIn app.
Lastly, you can also consume information on Pulse as well as Slideshare
Rishi, over to you.
So LinkedIn has over 1.4M jobs on our platform, and with our recent acquisition of Bright, we hope to growth that exponentially over the years
Being this central hub for job postings is only part of the value that LinkedIn provides, the real value to me is the insights that we provide to help you land that dream job
Before I begin, I want to emphasize that any job search activity you do on LinkedIn is between you and us. We take privacy very seriously
As mentioned, we have 1.4M jobs on LinkedIn.
We also make it easy for you to find those jobs by providing keyword searches, letting you specify your preferences, and providing personalized recommendations for you based on your profile and activity.
The other additional insight we provide you is letting you know how you're connected to a particular company that may be of interest. As mentioned, we want you to leverage your network throughout the entire search process
Once you've found your dream job, reach out to your connections for a referral and intel (as you can see on the RHS)
As I'm sure you've experienced, applying to job postings always feels like dropping your resume into a blackbox
Increase your chances of success and find that warm lead into the company
Your network can not only help you get an interview, but coach you through the interview process and increase your odds of success
Company career pages are another great way to express interest in companies you may be interested
You can receive company updates and learn about open job opportunites
Additionally, you can see how your connected to the company and use your network (again) to find out about opportunities
Lastly, LinkedIn provides a standalone job seeking app on iOS which you can download on your phone
The app will be available on Android early next year
the job seeker app is a light-weight way to search for and track opportunities on the go
I highly recommend downloading it if you're in active job seeking mode
In closing, I’d like to highlight that everything starts by you telling your story to showcase who you are on your profile.
When you add connections, you can also leverage them as you look for your next job – esp. if you nurture the relationships you’ve built. Who you know also becomes a part of your brand
Lastly, you can share and learn from your connections as well as other channels on LI
As you choose to follow channels join groups, etc. that becomes ye another avenue to showcase who you are.
So, ask you can see – LinkedIn is a place when your identity, your network and knowledge form this amazing base from which opportunity arises!
