Analysis Of Tabula Rasa By Robert Southey
What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice, that s what little girls, are
made of. What are little boys made of? Snips and snails, and puppy dog tails. That s what little
boys are made of . Author: English Poet Robert Southey (1774 1843).
Tabula rasa this is how the educationalist John Locke, (1632) believed children were born, with a
blank slate beginning their lives morally neutral. He also wrote that the little and almost insensible
impressions on our tender infancies have very important and lasting consequences. He argued that
the associations of ideas that one makes when young are more important than those made later
because they are the foundation of the self. Locke, (1632) also argued that because a baby s mind
was so malleable a parent could mould them with careful diligence. However Kohlberg (2004) was
one of the first theorists to address gender as a learned, cognitive concept. His thinking was
influenced by Piaget, who portrayed children as active learners who use interactions with their
environment to construct an understanding of the world around them (Piaget, 1961). Kohlberg
believed that children s cognitive understanding of gender influenced their behaviour (Kohlberg,
1981).
Walking into any new born infant s room you could almost certainly guess the gender of the baby
just from the colour of his or her clothes, blankets, and toys. Any infant surrounded by pink items
is virtually certain to be a girl, whereas a child

Justification Of The Atomic Bomb
On 6 August 1945 the Enola Gay, a B 29 bomber, dropped the first atomic bomb to be used in
actual combat on Hiroshima, Japan. The aftermath of this single bomb was over 130,000 dead and
wounded. The skyline of Hiroshima was almost completely leveled. This caught the
Japanese completely off guard. This as well as the bombing of Nagasaki three days later led to the
final and unconditional surrender of the Japanese
Empire and the end to World War II. The end result of these bombings outweighed the alternative of
invading the Japanese mainland instead of unleashing atomic weapons on the Japanese by a great
deal.
The months and years that lead up to this massive blow against the
Japanese were full of heated debates and arguments on the moral implications of using an atomic
weapon against a civilian target. At the time the Japanese were running rampant in the Pacific and
our nation was fighting a three front war: one front in the Pacific, one front in Europe, and the
final front in North Africa. This placed a great deal of strain on our wartime resources, the tactic of
Island Hopping was becoming successful but the amount of manpower being needed for the other
two fronts meant that the Pacific front was not able to become a top priority.
The Manhattan Project had been underway since 1942 as a last resort option. The Manhattan Project
was of the utmost importance and conducted with the highest levels of security possible. With the

Hash Browns For When You re Sad or Tired Imagine yourself stumbling home after and
exhausting day. You open the fridge door only to find nothing appetizing. There are no leftovers to
quickly heat up, no frozen pizzas to bake in the oven, and your stomach is going to vacate your
body if you eat another peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You want something greasy, delicious, and
completely unhealthy. It s nine o clock at night and breakfast is on your mind. The easiest and most
delicious thing to make is hot mess hash browns. So pull out that bag of hash browns that have been
sitting in your freezer for three months. It s the diced kind that you bought by mistake. ... Show

Go dig through your cupboards until you find your cutting board and then grab a knife. First grab

Essay on Millau Viaduct Project Management
The Millau Viaduct is a cable stayed road bridge which spans the valley of the river Tarn situated
alongside the Township of Millau in Southern France. The viaduct standing over 343 meters tall
was the world s tallest cable stayed bridge and was proposed as the missing link in the A75 auto
route that connects Paris in the north to Perpignan in the south. The Millau Viaductwas the product
of 17 years of ideas, proposals, planning and designs that resulted in shaving 40 miles off the
former route through the region, a boom in local economic development and the completion of the
one of the world s most well managed and constructed projects.

were to be followed in each proposal. Refer to Appendix Figure (4) for images of proposed projects.
This approach was designed to gain further evaluation on already proposed designs, instead of
receiving freshly proposed designs. The proposals were submitted and critiqued by an independent
committee setup within SETRA.
Selection of design:
In July of 1996 the party in charge of executing the work composed of Government
representatives, Local officials, Engineers and Director of Roads selected the multiple cable stayed
viaduct as the most appropriate solution based on the project scope. The viaduct had the lowest
cost across all proposals and also shortest build time. The architectural design was of the highest
quality and in keeping with the local aesthetics. An architect s impression is outlined in Appendix

Romeo And Juliet Essay On Death
Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows Romeo s infatuation with two things:
death, and Juliet, one overpowering the other. Romeo is suicidal; everything related to eternal
rest peaks his interest. Juliet causes Romeo to die which reveals that Juliet did what death itself
could not. She helped Romeo forget about the harsh realities of the world, whereas death allowed
Romeo an option in the end where he could be alongside his one and only true love. Whether it be
in hell or heaven, Romeo would have followed Juliet anywhere. Despite Romeo s obsession with
death, his constant references to Juliet suggests that it is not true. From the first time Romeo lays
his eyes on Juliet, he was entranced by her beauty and falls in love... Show more content on

I am content, so thou wilt have it so/Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so (3.5.17 18 and
24). Romeo is content with dying if Juliet wills it so. This brings light to the fact that Romeo
does not worry about himself or about anything other than Juliet when he is with her. When he
goes to Mantua, Romeo quickly becomes depressed. He complains that, heaven is here, where
Juliet lives, and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven
and may look on her, but Romeo may not (3.3.29 32). Romeo reveals that anywhere outside
Verona is a place of purgatory if the unworthiest of creatures are able to gaze upon Juliet s beauty
while he is stuck in Mantua. As a result, he believes that the banishment is worse than dying as
he is tortured by the fact that he may never be able to see her again without the risk of being
killed. The only way for Romeo to be together with Juliet is through the means of dying. As
Romeo heard of Juliet s deceasement, he rushes to go to Verona despite the evident threat to his
life, with poison, to kill himself alongside Juliet. He kills himself just before Juliet woke up.
Juliet then kills herself so that they may be together in the afterlife regardless of if it is hell or
heaven. Suicide is considered an utmost sin in Christianity and by killing himself, he rescinded his
beliefs and religion to be with the one he loved. They both revoke their religion in order to be with
each other, neither of them caring

Cleopatra the queen of the Nile: When I think back to Roman and Egyptian times the first name
that comes to mind is Cleopatra. I envy her for many reasons. She was a great ruler, she had
riches, she had fame and most of all she had an epic love story. There were not many female rulers
or females with power when you look into history. Cleopatra is an example of many things, and is
the epitome of a powerful historical female. Her name is synomious with beauty, power, intrigue
and ultimately tragedy.
In 69 BC Cleopatra was born into an Egyptian dynasty. A dynasty in decline and under the
protection of Rome. At the young age of 18 she assumed the throne along with one ... Show more

Her dynasty was over, and she proved to be the last pharaoh. With her death Cleopatra has
achieved immortality through the personal story of love and tragedy. When we think of
Cleopatra we automatically think of this story. But upon the research I learned that there were
others and she was actually Cleopatra 7. Many books, plays, movies and stories have been made
about the great queen of the Nile. Some tell us different sides of the story. Each have a little bit
of difference in them so who really knows which one to believe. One thing is certain; Cleopatra
was a great female ruler for her 22 years as the Egyptian queen. Ironically enough she wasn t even
Egyptian or roman for that matter. She and her family were Greek. There are also many works that
suggest that she was not a very pretty woman. Cleopatra s happiness didn t last, which seems
that just like in all love stories her life doesn t have a happy ending. Another side of the story is that
Marc killed himself after being surrounded by Octavia s troops, and then Cleopatra being held
prisoner which is why she killed herself. I was very intrigued by each story that I read of Cleopatra
s life and death and her rule, and I feel like I learned a lot. I think I will go on to watch some of the
movies to see them played

Essay about Leaving Las Vegas
Leaving Las Vegas, directed by Mike Figgis and based on the autobiographical novel by John O
Brien, is an emotional story about an alcoholic who rejects life and wants to drink himself to
death in Las Vegas, and an unselfish prostitute who loves him the way he is. Ben, played by
Nicholas Cage, was a formermovie producer in Los Angeles and has obviously crumbled in the
glamour world of Hollywood which is shown in the opening scene. Here Ben is already an
alcoholic when he disturbs former colleagues that are embarrassed of his appearance at the
restaurant. Ben is unstable and a mess when one of the men give him money and tell him not to
contact him again. Ben then gets fired and ultimately decides to drink himself to death in Las Vegas,

The director mainly used eye level shots, to leave it up to the audience to judge the two main
characters of the movie, although certain power struggles in the film are shown from high angles to
illustrate someone dominating a conversation or argument. Figgis also uses some point of view
shots to show the imbalance during Ben s drunken periods where the camera is placed at an oblique
angle to show tension and approaching movements. The images in the film are in high contrast with
streaks of blackness and harsh shafts of light to underline the dramatic events that occur.
When it comes to the editing, Figgis mainly used cutting to continuity to preserve the fluidity of
most events without the necessity to show them all. The director also uses flash forwards a few
times to give you an idea about the destiny of Sera, which is shown when she reflects about her
encounter with Ben to an invisible therapist. Figgis also shot the movie using Super 16mm film
to give it a tense, documentary feel. The music is also very unique because the jazzy soundtrack
isn t the usual music in a movie with such an emotional and dramatic plot. The actors have a great
impact on the success of this movie because the extremely difficult roles were played by excellent
actor stars. The story is done very well because it starts off showing us the situation of the two main
characters as they are and as the will be throughout

American Imperialism And The Laguna Pueblo History
Events that occur throughout a period of time have an interesting effect on the people, places, and
landscapes around it. In the course of history, particularly the history of North American Indigenous
Peoples, we can see how events have influenced their way of life. Since the arrival of Europeans in
North America, it is easy to notice how a singular event can cause shifts within indigenous cultures,
communities and the landscape. Although shifts within and between cultures and communities can
be good, the shifts Native Americans faced with the arrival of Europeans were usually not. For
centuries Natives struggled to preserve their lands, culture, and people as they were slowly being
assimilated into the new Euro American way of life and colonization. In this, we can not only see
the works of Euro American hegemony but also the fight of Natives to defend and protect their
cultural sovereignty. Throughout the course of this essay I am going to explore the ways in which
Euro American hegemony and the fight to preserve culture relate to the Laguna Pueblo history in
the novel, Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko.
The novel, Ceremony, takes place in the early 19th century in the southwest United States. We meet
the main character Tayo who is half white and half Laguna Pueblo. His mother had an affair with
a white man and left Tayo to be raised by his aunt when he was four. When we first meet Tayo he
has recently returned to the reservation after World War II and is

A. Value of each individual compensation package
Stock Option Compensation
In order to forecast the value of the stock option package, determining the call price is initially.
There are two approaches to calculate the call price for each option, black scholes and binominal
pricing. In addition, the current stock price, exercise price, time of option, annualized interest
rate, and the riskiness of the stock are the inputs for either approach. In the market, the current
price is $18.75. It is much lower than the 5 year offer exercise price for each option which is $35.
Besides, the risk free rate is 6.02% for the 5 year Treasury bill (Exhibit 4). As well, the stock...

C. Incentives
The stock option plans can create the appropriate incentives to either corporations or employees.
For the recipients, it can be regarded to tax reduction. By avoiding the income tax payments,
stock option would help the employees with high annualized income salaries by converting part
of income to capital gains. Furthermore, stock options are effective way to correlate performance
and compensation. In the other words, it implies that compensation would boost the individual
performance as well the overall performance of the firm. For the employees in high positions, the
compensation would encourage them to act in the best interest of company to foster company
growths as well as increase the stock prices. Employees, talented and excellent, are the main
purposes of creating incentive plans by the company. Generally, the stock option only benefits the
executives with high income salaries and in the decision making positions, where have ability to
impact on the company s profitability and growth. Therefore, in order to make the stock option
plans are more favorable, the company should individualize the package based on different
positions. Further, granting the privileges of early exercise or lessen the period of stock options
would also motivate the employees to take the plans. These set up of

George S Patton And Odysseus From The Odyssey
The sun is just setting over the men of the Third Army. They are overtaking one of the most
prized Nazi strongholds, Metz. These men who will wage war within the hour are heroes in their
own right but the hero they all look up to is their general, George S. Patton. He truly is the hero
of this theatre of war. These, and all heroes, look at danger as little more than an obstacle to
overpass. General George S Pattonand Odysseus from The Odyssey, by Homer, are both heroes.
They reached fame at very different times but they both exhibited the same qualities and abilities
that allowed them to overcome any and every challenge thrown at them. Patton fought Nazis in

He would not have been called a coward if he walked away from those odds. He didnt walk
away. He stood and fought with his son and they prevailed. He decided that his home and his
family were worth the risk. Patton, as a general in WWII, knew that each man under his control
was worth it. He told them that, Each man has a purpose in my army and each man before me
will be expected to fulfill that duty (O Reilly.14). Patton did more than just inspire his men from
a concealed hideout, far from the danger of the front lines, he also journeyed in his Willy Jeep
to the front lines to guide the assault. He was a high value target and escaped death on
numerous occasions but he maintained his composure on these ever increasing excursions.
When leaving the front lines he would find soldiers and make a point of, placing his hand on
their shoulder, looking them in the eyes and saying, Don t disappoint me soldier. (O Reilly.15).
He expected a lot of his men just as Odysseus did as evidenced by his disappointment when
members of his crew became disloyal and even acted as cowards when faced with challenges..
Odysseus himself did great things but he expected to be a role model to his men as well. When
in a grim situation, a hero needs to remain composed to allow for his wisdom and strategic
mindset to come through and save the day as displayed by both Odysseus and Patton. Odysseus
was trapped in a cave with a stone, that no group of men could move, separating him from the

Analysis Of Brother Can You Spare A Dime
None of us could completely understand or experience the hardships and miseries experienced
by the people during the Great Depression. However, E.Y. (Yip) Harburg the Legendary Lyricist
of the 1930 s gives us a large picture of it in his song Brother Can You Spare a Dime (Chochran
284). Harburg is a famous lyricist of several genres ranging from escapism to comedy and
romanticism. In every lyric he writes, he consistently [views it] as a means for expressing his
opinions against war and in favor of racial equality and economic justice (Chochran 285). His
song, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime, was originally composed with the help of Jay Gorney for a

Unemployed, hungry, and homeless, the people were desperate to find money to support their
family, as Harburg depicts in his song. People began blaming themselves for their misfortune.
They believed that success went to those who worked hard and deserved it (Cook, Karan 415).
Therefore, people blamed themselves for the loss of their jobs and the inability to support their
families during this economic crisis. This sense of self blame and self doubt was perhaps the
reason for an increase in suicide rates during this period (Cook, Karan 415). It was during this
event that Harburg wrote his song, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? , that represented the
struggles the people were going through. As the song represented all of the Americans who
built the great nation, those who had earth to plow or guns to bear (3) and those who built a
railroad (9) or built a tower (13) many were able to identify themselves with the singer and
perhaps had a much deeper understanding of the song s meaning. Harburg strengthens his
credibility and thus appeals to ethos by directly characterizing the singer as someone the reader
already knows, like the kid with the drum (20), and the reader s pal (23) who they called Al (21).
He also does this by making the singer relatable to his

Difference Between Public And Public Health
Public health is its own system within a larger one known as the healthcare delivery system. The
healthcare delivery system comprises of many sectors, all with different perspectives and goals.
Public health and the healthcare delivery systems very much complement and compete with each
other. Public healthas stated by Richard Riegelman is about knowing what not only makes us sick
but also knowing what makes us healthy and how that can be achieved if we come together and
work as a community.2 Public healthis everything around us and because of that it has the
responsibility of focusing on everything and everyone. Public health looks beyond the answer for a
cure, it looks at the how, why, when, where, what and therefore a solution on how to protect not
only the individual but serves an entire population. Competition within the healthcare delivery
system is something that began the moment public health was developed because the process of
public health was separate from the development of private medical practices. We still deal with the
differences between these two sectors; one main reason being that their public health approach was
population based and took a prevention viewpoint when practitioners took an individualistic
approach to cure diseases not prevent them. 1The healthcare delivery system complements public
health in the aspect that they hold together a system that was created for the sole purpose of taking
care of others health. According to the World Health

Mark Twain s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an epic story of the journey of a redneck
boy and a runaway slave, escaping the grips of society in the hope of a chance at the freedom
they long for so dearly. The novel s author, Mark Twain, also grew up in this society. Samuel

solemn faces, but showed smiling or laughing faces when not wearing makeup. I saw relief in
their faces as they accepted themselves, and they showed the world their happiness as it literally

lost its value. It is also said that it is rare to find a happy relationship. Edgar Lee Masters seemed
to believe the same about the romantic relationships of his time, as well. Masters conveys theses
feelings through some of the characters of his work, Spoon River Anthology. Edgar Lee Masters
uses unhappy marriages as a common factor in the deaths of many of the characters including
Margaret Fuller Slack, Amanda Barker and Tom Merritt in order to reveal his own discontent
toward romantic relationships. First, Margaret Fuller Slack s loveless relationship with her husband
is a main factor in her death. In the poem, Margaret Fuller Slack,... Show more content on

This is one way that Masters displays his discontent toward romantic relationships. Also, Masters
uses Amanda Barker s loveless and hateful relationship with her husband Henry as the cause of
her death. In the poem Amanda Barker, the character tells of how she died at a young age at the
fault of her husband. Masters wrote: HENRY got me with child, /Knowing that I could not bring
forth life /Without losing my own. Here, the character, Amanda Barker, retells of how her
husband, Henry, killed her. He was fully aware that she could not have a child without losing
her own life, yet he impregnates her anyway. She also tells of how the townspeople believed that
her husband loved her, but this was not the truth. Masters wrote: ...it is believed in the village
where I lived /That Henry loved me with a husband s love /But I proclaim from the dust /That he
slew me to gratify his hatred. If it where not for her relationship with Henry, she would not have
died young. This, once again, shows Edgar Lee Masters feelings about marriage. By often using
marriage and relationships as an important factor in the death of many of his characters, Lee
confirms his doubt in them. Finally, Tom Merritt s death had occurred because of his wifes romantic
relationship with a lover. The poems, Tom Merritt, Mrs. Merritt, and Elmer Karr tell the story of a
married woman s affair with a young man who, in the end, kills her husband. From the husband

The Theme Of Rebellion In George Orwell s 1984
Rebellions happened all throughout history and still continue in the present. Bacon s Rebellion
continues to have a lasting impact on today s society. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the
theme of rebellion is prevalent. The government system of Big Brother controls every aspect of
the people s lives. As the story progresses, the main character Winston Smith, finds himself
having hatred for Big Brother and wants to find a way to end the Party s reign. Other characters,
like Julia, only want to rebel for personal reasons and want no major changes. In George Orwell s
1984, the use of imagery to draw parallels between Winston s struggle against Big Brother and
man s repeated clashes with nigh totalitarian government. The struggle to beat a power that has
already gained control is grueling. In order to successfully revolt, there would need to be a large
mass of people willing to uprise. The people in overpowering governments are brainwashed to
believe in the false reality placed in front of them. Trying to convince people what they have
been told is fake is a challenge that is hard to surpass. Winston Smith placed himself on a mission
to help take down Big Brother, and in turn takes down himself. Winston wanted to rebel against
Big Brother for future generations to experience life in a way he is unable to. With memories of
the past, Winston realizes the world he lives in is very flawed. Mentally, Winston wants to destroy
Big Brother; however, Winston wants to remain part of

Techniques Used For Classify The Models Of Church Planting
Techniques used to categorize the models of church planting Things that lay influence on various
models used in planting of churches include: one is denominational ecclesiology, two is if a
mission agency or church is carrying out the actual planting, three is the planting body ethos, four is
the spiritual and theological planting body outlook, five being the direct correlation of factors to
the context which includes a community/area sociological understanding of where the church is to
be planted and six is the planting team size. The terminology employed in describing the different
planting models are divergent and a lot of terms are gotten from the obstetrics or horticulture world,
but others are derived from the military, nautical and astronomical worlds (Murray, Laying
Foundations, 260). Christine groups planting models in terms of the body performing the
sponsoring say the agency, church or any other body (Robinson and Christine, Planting tomorrow s
Churches Today, 126). Murray defines four historical church planting categories: one is the
replacement planting where it is conducted in places where the church is being closed, two is the
pioneer planting which is done in places where there are no Christian witnesses, three is the
saturation planting that mainly concerns with ensuring that each group of people that is
identifiable has unlimited church access which has relevance on a contextual basis, and the fourth
and last one is the sectarian planting that ensures an

Technological Approaches For Dementia Patients
Technological Approaches to Care of Dementia Patients
Dementia describes a decline in mental ability. Alzheimer disease, which damages brain cells, is the
major cause of dementia. It is estimated that around 850,000 people in UK developed dementia in
2015. The risks of developing dementia will increase by the comprehensive contributions of aging,
risk genes, and unhealthy lifestyles. However, the medical treatments fails to cure dementia
effectively for the mechanics of how dementia is developed is too complicated to identify.
Therefore, present research on dementia treatments mainly concentrates on technological devices to
help people with dementia. In this report, three technological approaches (the early diagnosis in
preventing people from dementia, infrared movement sensors to help taking care of people with
dementia, and integrated smart house are introduced and the limitations future implications of these
technologies are discussed.
By using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), a technique for measuring brain
activity, dementia can be spotted early and therefore being prevented. The patient will firstly be put
on a electroencephalography (EEG) cap, which records electrical activities (representing brain
activities) of the brain, and then lie in the fMRI machine. To observe the condition of patients
brain, pictures of celebrities will be shown inside fMRI machine and active different brain areas.
The image of the brain areas will be captured and used for

Banquo Eulogy
Welcome, dear family and relatives of Banquo, noble thanes and kinsmen. You have come far

His death was untimely and it is truly hard for me to speak of him now that he is deceased. I am
here today not to speak of his death and that he is no longer here by my side but to speak of his
times of great triumph. His death has hurt me and I will do whatever it takes to destroy the lives
of those people who murder him. All of you and myself will mourn the loss of one of our great
soldiers and my best friend. Banquo was the bravest person I have ever met, he spent his life
fighting for Scotland and he fought well and came out of all of his battles alive. He has always
stayed by my side. He lived a noble life and he died a noble death, from the start of his life when
we were playing together as children to the end he was an admired and undaunted man. During

The Real Merlin Essay
From the shores of Avalon to the court of King Arthur, tales and accounts of the mystical Merlin
abound. Did Merlin really exist, and if so, was he the dark magical wizard of legend or an image
conjured up by superstitious townsfolk to explain occurrences they didn t understand? To answer
this question, one should first look at the actual accomplishments of the figure Merlin. When was
the character introduced and what did he do afterwards? What kinds of feats did this person
accomplish to make him as well known as he is? Secondly, Merlin was well known as a mythical
figure. How did this mythical figure emerge and what aspects of his life do we still remember to
this day? As the son of a devil, was Merlin an evil characteror a good... Show more content on

Many stories of the Arthurian legend contain some reference to Merlin, as either a wizard or a
prophet. As a magician, Merlin performed feats such as the moving of Stonehenge, the disguising of
Uther Pendragon, and the crowning of King Arthur by the use of the sword in the stone (Fletcher
25). As a prophet, Merlin told of the defeat of the Saxons, the death of Arthur, and the one who
found the Holy Grail.
Almost everyone knows the story The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White wherein Merlin
instructed Arthur in his life as king, but what most don t know is that Merlin was, in legend, the
son of a devil. An incubus came and bedded with Merlin s mother so that she would bear his
child (Ackerman 168). One story that shows the significance of this union is Geoffrey of
Monmouth s Historia regum Britannae. In this book there is a section that tells the tale of
Vortigern and Ambrosius. Vortigern, the King of Britain at the time, wants to build a new retreat,
but every night the foundation is destroyed. Vortigern s wise men tell him he must sprinkle the
spot with the blood of a child born fatherless. After a long and tedious search, Ambrosius is found
and brought before Vortigern. Ambrosius tells the King not to slay him but to dig in the spot for
two vases. Those digging found these two vases and inside were two tents. Inside the two tents
were a red dragon and a white dragon. These creatures fought each other

In part 1 of the book A Sand County Almanac reveals what Leopold family sees and does on a

to preserve the integrity, stability, and the beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends

Nuclear Explosion During The Cold War
The occurrence of the explosion was a direct effect of Cold War isolation and the subsequent lack
of safety regulations. From its beginning the Soviet nuclear effort, primarily focused on making an
atomic bomb, was done with complete disregard for human life. Run by skilled, determined and
callous managers, the nuclear industry did not take human life into account if such concerns did
not serve the task at hand. And, like many of the Soviet s projects, the emerging nuclear industry
was covered in secrecy, with little to no information of what was going on made public. This was
mainly due to the fact they wanted to conceal any plans from their enemies, such as the United
States. The Soviet government also wanted to control the scientists and

Literary Devices In Richard Cory
The narrative poem, Richard Cory , written in 1893 by the poet Edwin Arlington Robinson,
narrates the story of Richard Cory, a fictional character, a man who seems to have it all. The
people in the town belong to lower financial class and seem to worship him because of his
position, they look up to him and they want to be like him. Richard Corytakes his own life at the
end of the poem, which shows, that appearance and money cannot buy happiness or fulfillment.
This poem is narrated in the third person plural, where we represents the citizens of the small
town in which Richard Cory resides and where he is considered part of the royalty for his wealth
and well educated self. The title of this poem suggests Richard s destiny; because according to the
meaning the name, Richard derives from German, French and English Ric (ruler, leader, king,
powerful) and Hard (strong, brave, hardy) and it therefore means strong in rule the perfect name
for the perfect guy. Robinson had a rough childhood, since he described his own childhood as stark
and unhappy which led his poetryto have a huge amount of dark pessimism within each line.
Robinson utilizes literary devices in his composition such as, connotations that suggest to the
reader that Richard Cord belongs to the royalty. He mentions sole to crown, (3) imperially slim,
(4) and schooled in every grace, (10), this connotation emphasizes Richard s position as local
royalty and portrays him as the ideal man. The poem

Discussion Surrounding Global Alliances Operating in the...
The international aviation industry is arguably one of the most competitive and cut throat
businesses in the world today. Characterised by high revenue but notoriously thin profit margins,
modern international airlines are constantly searching for methods to gain advantages over their
competitors and attract new customers. One of these methods which has become popular since the
late 1990s is that of the global airline alliance. Today there are three major alliances in operation,
each containing different member airlines. These alliances offer airlinecustomers various
advantages over travel with a traditional carrier. Nevertheless, these advantages have been criticised

Another major airline alliance operating today is the Oneworld alliance. Founded on 1
February 1999 by giants such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas, it has expanded to
include twelve member airlines, and has an additional twenty non voting affiliate members,
such as QantasLink, subsidiary of Qantas, and Dragonair, subsidiary of Cathay Pacific.
Oneworld also won the Skytrax award for best airline alliance in 2010, and has won more
international awards than the other two main alliances (Oneworld, 2011). However, some may
argue that the quantity of awards received is irrelevant, and the awards by Skytrax are
recognised by many as the leading airline awards. Oneworld is also a useful alliance for New
Zealand based travellers, as Qantas membership allows frequent travellers access to the benefits of
this alliance.
Skyteam was the last of the three major airline alliances to be founded, in June 2000. According to
Rodrigue (2005), the Skyteam alliance holds 21 per cent of the market share, when measured by
traffic, making it the second largest airline alliance operating today, after Star Alliancebut before
Oneworld. Skyteam is made up of airline heavyweights such as the merged Air France KLM, in
addition to Delta Airlines, Korean Air, and China Southern Airlines. Whilst the Skyteam alliance is
large, it has also failed to secure any Skytrax airline alliance awards (Skytrax, 2011). This combined

Application Feedback On Student Performance
The area that I have choice to complete my action research project on is giving specific written
feedback on student written assignments will effect student performance on essay and test
questions. I chose this area because of a professional development class I took last year, Assessment
for Learning. I have been working on using rubrics and better assessments and using the formative
assessment for planning my teaching. One of the areas that most of my students struggle with is
writing, therefore I will focus this research action project on teaching my students how to be
better writers. Using specific feedback on skills they did well on and skills they need to
continue to work on, should help students focus on improving their writing. My research
questions is :When given specific feedback that is positive and corrective, students will increase
the quality of their writing assignments and therefore their grades. There is a lot of research on
the topic of specific feedback. According to Black and William(2001), feedback should focus only
on the quality of the work produced by the student and should not compare students to each other.
This feedback should on goals the student can achieve; an individual guide for improvement.
According to Stiggins (2007) students need to know the answers to several questions. Where am I
at? Where am I going? As well as, how do I get there? Give specific written feedback on

Global Management Perspective The business world today is more global than ever before. Every
business from manufacturing to fast food and coffee has gone to a global format. The market place
that businesses must compete for market share in is no longer just a domestic one, the competition
they will face is in the foreign market as well as in the digital market place. With the new ever

Then Starbucks focused on their global dominance just like McDonalds had previously. They let
their focus slide from keeping their current customers and only worrying about gaining new
customers. These missteps and the refocus of McDonalds, led to Starbucks losing the market
share they had won over, plus some that wasn t McDonalds before. The mistakes of McDonalds
were realized and the business plan was adapted. Starbucks really lost more in the end, because
they made the same mistakes they had benefited from earlier. Benchmarking is a good form of
learning and growing as your organization develops them into a global performer. When an
organization is growing and expanding, they will run into issues where they have successes and
failures alike. The organization has to take these and develop best practices to utilize going
forward. These best practices or benchmarks are what allows the organization to grow and what
makes the organization grow. When mistakes are made, these need to be documented and then a
plan put into place that then passes the information along, so that the organization as a whole learns
from the mistakes of their predecessors. Benchmarking and best practices can really save the
organization time, resources and money. When a best practice is established, you show where the
mistake caused the organization a loss and then you establish

Children With ADHD In Elementary Schools
As a teacher of elementary school you work with all different types of children. Some children
are very advanced and excel in their work and others take longer to catch on and comprehend the

but in most children with ADHD that is not the case in fact these types of kids tend to be very

How Did Pope John Paul II Have A Free Response To Religion
As displayed in the film, Pope John II , we can see that Pope John Paul II shows many
characteristics of a faith fulfilled man such as, that it is risky and requires a free response. I think
a main part in the movie where his faith is risked is when he denies his girlfriend of pushing their
relationship into something more. He denied her offer. I feel like her had the calling of Godto him to
become a priest earlier and that a family and marriage was his thing. He knew that God wanted
him to spread the word of God and help spread His ways rather than creating more children of
God. he probably had to think twice on what he truly wanted for his future. There are a lot of
styes when you think about something about this. He truly risked a lot but he knew whatever he
chose his relationship with God would be strong. Pope John Paul II delayed a free response early in
his life when the Nazi s took over hsi town in Poland during the late 1930 s. There was a lot of

Mental Illness In Gran Torino
Our experiences shape who we are. Gran Torino by Clint Eastwood is a moving film that depicts
topics such as racism, mental illness and sacrifice in a modern setting without sugarcoating. In
the film, korean war veteran and curmudgeon Walt Kowalski becomes an unexpected hero and
father figure to nextdoor neighbour Thao Lor. Gran Torino begins in a funeral home, where
protagonist Walt is mourning the death of his spouse, grimacing at the reality of being widowed
and the disrespect of his children and their families. After the death of his wife, Mr. Kowalski
does little other than drink his weight in beer daily and make critical comments towards his
neighbours and surrounding community. Besides the company of his yellow labrador Daisy, Walt
is alone with his thoughts. Because Walt acquired racism through experience where the race he
discriminates was an enemy in reality, it is not truly one of his traits and can be undone as he is
human and is able to overcome his mental illness, which is the reasoning for his intolerance.
Initially, Walt is racist because he has been trained not to trust koreans and will not be bothered to
distinguish the difference between who he had fought and his neighbours. He struggles to realize
that he is no longer at war and mentally is unable to move on from that state of mind. In a scene
following Walt s first threat towards the gang, it is evidently identified that he is still living in the
past through an interaction between him and Father

all be happier than if we were only looking out for ourselves. With society, everyone is able to
concentrate on what they do best, reap the benefits from the skills of others, and avoid the conflict
that would arise otherwise. Thus, it follows that the ultimate goal of society is to ensure the
happiness of everyone. And currently, only one economy has staved off the test of time and
reached that goal. Capitalism, with its merit system, flexible cost adjustments, and having no other
economic contenders is able to achieve a better society than any other socio economic system can.
By having an economic system that rewards merit rather than mediocrity, capitalism stimulates the
market as well as individuals to progress and innovate, thus improving the overall welfare of its
society. In a capitalist society, it is the people that produce that get rewarded. Entrepreneurs or
companies that come up with a new product,

zodiac signs? You have come to the perfect place! The astrological zodiacs are divided into 12
distinct signs. The constellation behind the sun during your birth is ideally your sign. Separated
by 9 degrees on either side of the earth s orbit and the sun s path, Zodiac signs are named after the
constellations in Latin. There are ideally 12 signs in Astrology. They are: Aries Taurus Gemini

A Virgo it is! Reasonable, practical, head strong and inquisitive, the Virgo is one of the most
feminine signs of the zodiac. They can be short tempered, impatient, and sometimes a tad too
selfish. Charming, intuitive and very skillful at reading and understanding people, Virgo gels
well with Taurus and Capricorn. o Libra Represented by scales, the Libra is all about justice,
balance and stability. They like peace, beauty and harmony around them. Understanding, caring
and ideally very quiet, the Librans prefer to be quiet and avoid any arguments. However, if the
need be, they can take a battle head on like no other. Excellent debaters, Libra carry themselves
with a happy and carefree attitude. Decision making is however one of the most challenging
jobs for them. o Scorpio Artistic, creative, and one of the most sensual lovers in the Zodiac, the
Scorpio is the most dynamic signs. The charm, the mystical glances, the aura is so attractive that
people are drawn to you like moth is to flame. Unforgiving, bold, cool, particularly head strong,
the Scorpio can have a dangerous dark side. Withdrawn and secretive, Scorpios are known to be the
best friends you could ever ask

Traditional Management Styles And Disciplinary Techniques...
If you do that again, you will be in big trouble! This is an exclamation that is heard all around the
world, in many different languages. It is heard in houses, schools, play groups, and many other
places. It is said by parents and teachers alike. The problem with that phrase is the consequence.
Alfie Kohnand Forrest Gathercoal are two experts in classroom management. They both believe that
traditional management stylesand disciplinary techniques need some adjustments. One can gather
from reading both Kohn s and Gathercoal s works that there is quite a large amount of sense
behind that and schools really should reexamine these practices. Kohn believes that many of the
disciplinary methods used in today s schools do not create an ethical child. Kohn (2006) tells us,
By contrast, ethical sophistication consists of some blend of principles and caring, of knowing
how one ought to act and being concerned about others. Punishment does absolutely nothing to
promote either of these things (p. 29). When children are disciplined, they will only remember
that doing whatever the wrong thing was, has the effect of discipline. This will impair them later
because they may not know why the action was wrong. It will not teach them right from wrong.
Kohn (2006) also talks about coercion. The description used is, The most basic way to get what
you want from someone, assuming you have more power than he does, is just to make him do it
(Kohn, 2006, p. 22). It is argued

Domestic Violence Among Black And Blue
Why is it So Hard to See Black and Blue ? According to the Salvation Army and Care Haven, it is
Hard to See Black and Blue on a White upper class woman because viewers focus on her gold and
white dress, rather than on the bruises that cover her body. The sponsors of the public service
announcement put a gold and white dress on a battered woman to incorporate a popular
phenomenon with something serious: domestic violence. Within the last decade, there has been an
increase in reported incidents of domestic violenceamong upper class renowned Americans males.
Martha Ross, a reporter, interviewed a few of these men. All of them blamed their actions on
accidents or the woman ( Charlie Sheen? ). Despite these men s excuses, they still gain support;
instead of taking the abuser s side people need to protect women. One group that understands the
need to protect women from these types of men is the Salvation Army; they have a division called
CareHaven that specializes in sheltering women and their children who have experienced domestic
abuse (Salvation Army s CareHaven). In the advertisement on the previous page, CareHaven
appeals to viewers sense of logic and emotion by using a woman, text, and an illusion to persuade
people to report and, thus, stop abuse against women.
CareHaven s use of the Caucasian woman is their strongest attribute in this ad to support their effort
to lessen violence against women. She is Caucasian, blonde, well dressed in a gold and white

Popular Musical Development And Societal Development
The Start of Tropicalismo
Popular musical development and societal development are usually parallel with one another.
Artists and musicians can change a society and have an enormous impact on how a country runs
itself. A good example of how a country can be influenced by new, innovative music would be the
Tropicalismo movement. Caetano Velosois a Brazilian musician that started the Tropicalia
movement and created music that combined many elements of different music together, and Veloso
did this with other tropicalists. The background of Caetano Veloso, the two songs Caetano Veloso
produced, information about Tropicalia, and the background of Brazil can help us comprehend
how music has a great impact and influence on society. Tropicalia is more than just a music genre
produced in the late 1960s, but a social political movement that radically changed the way
Brazilians saw contemporary Brazilian music.
Caetano Veloso s start as a Brazilian musician was back in 1942 when Veloso finished school in
Santa Amaro, and he moved to Salvador where he learned how to play the guitar and sing.
(Veloso, Caetano) Veloso would spend his time at bars with his sister and perform music for people
s entertainment. Veloso met Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, and Tom ZГ© in 1963 where they started
musical shows as a group. (Veloso, Caetano) One of the musical shows that they started was Vila
Velha theatre with Veloso directing the theatre. In 1965, Veloso left Federal University of Bahiato

Rock N Roll Analysis
I imagine this song to be an upbeat vibe type of rock n roll song. I want to it have an upbeat type
of song because I feel like rock n roll is that type of genre where people back in the 1950s would
dance to and have fun listening to it at concerts. In this song, it would go along with instruments
like the electric guitar, a couple of backup singers, a drummer, an electronic keyboard, a bass
guitar, and possibly a saxophone. For the type of band who would sing this song, it would
probably be a band like Bill Haley and the Comets. I can picture this song sounding something
like Bill Haley and the Comets song Rock Around the Clock with that kind of upbeat fast tempo.
This song is about a guy who is single and walks into a bar on a Saturday

Test For Aggregation Bias On The United States Personal...
The purpose of this analysis is to test for aggregation bias in the United States Personal
Consumption Expenditure (PCE). This paper uses first and second generation panel unit root
testsfootnote{For more information see Hurlin (2007). } on the National Income and Product
Accounts (NIPA) that make up the PCE. Second generation tests differ from first generation tests in
that the latter drop the assumption of cross sectional independence the error term. Aggregation bias
exists if NIPA inflationdifferentials converge or diverge at different levels of aggregation. An
inflation differential is the difference between inflation rates in one sector and the inflation rate in
another sector. Higher levels of aggregation are made to represent the lower, more dis aggregate
levels. If aggregates properly represent the underlying data then each level should converge or
diverge the same. Aggregation is important because the process used to aggregate the data may
remove information from the data and create divergent inflation differentials when dis aggregate
inflation rates converge. Monetary policy of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is
based on a target inflation rate, however there are concerns that if the FOMC focus s on aggregate
inflation it may cause individual sectors to diverge. Clark (2006) uses dis aggregate quarterly NIPA
accounts to study the distribution of inflation persistence across consumption sectors. Inflation
persistence is the tendency of inflation to

Discrimination and Misrepresentation of Minority Races in...
Discrimination and Misrepresentation of Minority Races in Film
Racists often believe that alternative races are inferior. Stuart Hall, an expert in the field of
cultural studies who is also interested in media studies, believes that it is difficult to completely
eliminate race as a floating signifier because it is impossible to remove the obvious physical
differences of distinct races. These distinctions are made increasingly aware by filmmakers to their
audiences in such films as West Side Story, Birth of a Nation, Gringo in Mananaland, and the Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Even when films were silent movies, The technology of film

Greaser was used to refer to Mexicans who supposedly had used grease to comb their hair, but
soon it spread to incorporate other Hispanic groups as well. Racial epithets were commonly used
and construed into the plots of films, and minority racial groups tended to be increase the profit in
film sales (Keller 13). These epithets were reinforced to define a characteristic style of stereotyping
by playing on the attitudes that predominated among Anglo filmmakers and their white audiences
(Keller 14).
Two particular silent films both exemplify how stereotypes have played on racist Anglo
American attitudes: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Birth of a Nation. The Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse, shows how minority groups are kept as subjects to Anglos. For
example, several camera shots showed how this was thought to be true. A monkey, to which
African Americans have been commonly referred then and even now, is shown climbing a stick,
and a white bird is perched at the peak of the stick, pecking at the monkey to keep him from
climbing up the stick. This scene has several intentions. For one, it depicts how Anglo Americans
do not and will not accept the coming up of racial inferiors , or rather they will do everything in
their power to keep blacks down or keep them from climbing the social ladder to equality. As Stuart
Hall had mentioned, there will always exist

Mrs Dalloway Suffering Essay
In Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf highlights different experiences of everyday suffering after
World War I. Septimus Smith, a veteran of World War I, loses his identity during his tour.
Clarissa Dalloway and Lucrezia Warren Smith are both suffering as a result of society s
expectations; they both lose their individuality and succumb to their husbands. Many people did
not know how to cope with the change of perspective after the war; some people tried different
forms of treatment, while others chose to ignore the war and move forward. Virginia Woolf
asserts
the idea that depression can only be understood emotionally, not scientifically, ultimately proving
that uneducated women have more wisdom than men after the war. Septimus suffered emotional...

Dalloway was never particularly close with Septimus, but when she heard of his death, she was
able to connect with him emotionally. Similar to Septimus, Mrs. Dalloway did not believe in
bringing children into the world, She had the oddest sense of being herself invisible; unseen;
unknown; there being no more marrying, no more having of children now, but only this
astonishing and rather solemn progress with the rest of them, up Bond Street, this being Mrs.
Dalloway; not even Clarissa any more; this being Mrs. Richard Dalloway (10). Mrs. Dalloway
feels invisible in the world, and her seclusion makes her to want to reject the expectations of
society such as reproduction. Clarissa also feels as though she has lost her identity; instead of
being known as Clarissa, an individual, she feels like she is just Mrs. Dalloway: an extension of
her husband. Mrs. Dalloway s joy comes from her husband, It was due to Richard; she had never
been so happy. Nothing could be slow enough; nothing last too long. No pleasure could equal, she
thought, straightening the chairs, pushing in one book on the shelf, this having done with the
triumphs of youth, lost herself in the process of living... (185). She describes a monotonous
experience of household chores with a sense of strong appreciation and pleasure. Everything she
does has the intention of pleasing Richard, and she feels as if she has lost herself; her feelings are
inauthentic. Clarissa has lost her identity and purpose, so now she

Examples Of Positive Reinforcement
Properly used, positive reinforcement is extremely powerful. (B.F. Skinner) This quote from B.F
Skinner shows my opinion on the punishment v. positive reinforcement argument. According to the
dictionary punishment is the infliction or imposition of a penalty for an offense. Examples of
punishment include: loss of recess time, extra homework, detention, and loss of other privileges.
According to the dictionary the definition of reinforcement is the process of encouraging or
establishing a belief or pattern of behavior, especially by encouragement or reward. Examples of
reinforcement are: teacher praise, earning privileges, teacher attention, taking away a homework
assignment, extra recess time, and extending a deadline. Positive reinforcement and punishment
within a classroom are constantly being tested to see which ones more effective when shaping a
child s behavior, but in my opinion positive reinforcement is the better option. To back this up I
am going to be using a combination of different experiments and surveys that have been
conducted with student and teachers. Before speaking about studies and surveys and other cold
fact I am going explain the different types of rein forcers that occur within any type of
reinforcement process. The first type of reinforce that is involved within this process is a social
reinforcers. Social reinforcers are reinforcers that are mediated by teachers, parents; other adults and
peers. (Positive Reinforcement in the Classroom: Tips

The Influence Of The American Soldiers During World War II
Who would have ever thought a small amount of rice with raw fish on top of it would become so
popular across the world? Sushi s fame jumped an ocean across and became popular in the USA.
Many factors contributed to its popularization and has helped make its place in the American
cuisine. As time passed by, the simple creations of sushievolved to complicated combinations and
eye catching presentations today. This change was welcomed because it gave a new perspective of
the dish, giving it a new face.
One of the factors that made sushi popular was the influence of the American soldiers. After
World War II (WWII), American soldiers who were led by General Douglas MacArthur
occupied Japan. During the war, sushi shops were forced to close due to rationing. There were
not enough rice to reopen the shops after the war. The American forces created a program where
people would be the ones to bring their own rice to the shop if they wanted sushi. The sushi chef
would then use the rice brought by the customers to make sushi for them. This allowed for the
shops to reopen and function. This popularized sushi outside of Tokyo (sushi was mainly sold in
the city). One can say, sushi was saved by the American forces. If the American forces had not
stepped in and created the program to help revive the sushi shops, no doubt would there be sushi
shops open today. Sushi would not have had the chance to spread outside of Tokyo.
Another factor is The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. This was a

A Stakeholder Management Model For Ethical Decision Making
It is important for a business to balance all the different stakeholders that a company might have.
Some stakeholders might have different priorities than others. For example, some shareholders
expect the business to give them only money while others stakeholders need good working
conditions. Also, investors might wish to see proof that the company responds to environmental
matters before promising money to a business. In addition, problems might happen when
stakeholders compromise to the expectation of other stakeholders.
The difference priorities of stakeholders can come into place when organizations have to come up
with a decision, they have to decide which stakeholders should be prioritized. When beginning the
dialogue with a specific stakeholder group, the management should explain from the beginning
what the intended objectives of the dialogue are.
Measure performance: the company should be able to tell how well its stakeholder management
processes are going which of course depends on what objectives the firm has set for a specific
stakeholder engagement process. ( a stakeholder management model for ethical decision
making|Simone de Colle Academia.edu , 2016)
Communication and reporting: corporation provides useful information about stakeholder views
and interests.
Review commitment and policies: Corporate s policies should be reviewed to respond to issues
raised by stakeholders.
Continuous engagement: It is necessary for corporations to have ongoing approach with

Student Phonological Awareness
In order to develop a student s phonological awareness I would use the following skills and
activities to focus on: Sentence segmentation, syllable segmentation, followed by tither onset rime
blending as well as segmentation and finally working on phoneme segmentations themselves. The
reason I focused on segmentation it that it teaches the student how to break apart words, as well as
differentiate between syllables and phonemes. The first activity we would work on would be
sentence segmentation where I casually work with the student on breaking down a sentence into
words. This could be done by slowly readinga sentence, or having other students reading, and have
students either clap for each word or hold their hands up and add one finger

  • 2. Analysis Of Tabula Rasa By Robert Southey What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice, that s what little girls, are made of. What are little boys made of? Snips and snails, and puppy dog tails. That s what little boys are made of . Author: English Poet Robert Southey (1774 1843). Tabula rasa this is how the educationalist John Locke, (1632) believed children were born, with a blank slate beginning their lives morally neutral. He also wrote that the little and almost insensible impressions on our tender infancies have very important and lasting consequences. He argued that the associations of ideas that one makes when young are more important than those made later because they are the foundation of the self. Locke, (1632) also argued that because a baby s mind was so malleable a parent could mould them with careful diligence. However Kohlberg (2004) was one of the first theorists to address gender as a learned, cognitive concept. His thinking was influenced by Piaget, who portrayed children as active learners who use interactions with their environment to construct an understanding of the world around them (Piaget, 1961). Kohlberg believed that children s cognitive understanding of gender influenced their behaviour (Kohlberg, 1981). Walking into any new born infant s room you could almost certainly guess the gender of the baby just from the colour of his or her clothes, blankets, and toys. Any infant surrounded by pink items is virtually certain to be a girl, whereas a child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Justification Of The Atomic Bomb On 6 August 1945 the Enola Gay, a B 29 bomber, dropped the first atomic bomb to be used in actual combat on Hiroshima, Japan. The aftermath of this single bomb was over 130,000 dead and wounded. The skyline of Hiroshima was almost completely leveled. This caught the Japanese completely off guard. This as well as the bombing of Nagasaki three days later led to the final and unconditional surrender of the Japanese Empire and the end to World War II. The end result of these bombings outweighed the alternative of invading the Japanese mainland instead of unleashing atomic weapons on the Japanese by a great deal. The months and years that lead up to this massive blow against the Japanese were full of heated debates and arguments on the moral implications of using an atomic weapon against a civilian target. At the time the Japanese were running rampant in the Pacific and our nation was fighting a three front war: one front in the Pacific, one front in Europe, and the final front in North Africa. This placed a great deal of strain on our wartime resources, the tactic of Island Hopping was becoming successful but the amount of manpower being needed for the other two fronts meant that the Pacific front was not able to become a top priority. The Manhattan Project had been underway since 1942 as a last resort option. The Manhattan Project was of the utmost importance and conducted with the highest levels of security possible. Essay on Millau Viaduct Project Management The Millau Viaduct is a cable stayed road bridge which spans the valley of the river Tarn situated alongside the Township of Millau in Southern France. The viaduct standing over 343 meters tall was the world s tallest cable stayed bridge and was proposed as the missing link in the A75 auto route that connects Paris in the north to Perpignan in the south. The Millau Viaductwas the product of 17 years of ideas, proposals, planning and designs that resulted in shaving 40 miles off the former route through the region, a boom in local economic development and the completion of the one of the world s most well managed and constructed projects. • 6. Romeo And Juliet Essay On Death Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows Romeo s infatuation with two things: death, and Juliet, one overpowering the other. Romeo is suicidal; everything related to eternal rest peaks his interest. Juliet causes Romeo to die which reveals that Juliet did what death itself could not. She helped Romeo forget about the harsh realities of the world, whereas death allowed Romeo an option in the end where he could be alongside his one and only true love. Whether it be in hell or heaven, Romeo would have followed Juliet anywhere. Despite Romeo s obsession with death, his constant references to Juliet suggests that it is not true. I am content, so thou wilt have it so/Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so (3.5.17 18 and 24). Romeo is content with dying if Juliet wills it so. This brings light to the fact that Romeo does not worry about himself or about anything other than Juliet when he is with her. When he goes to Mantua, Romeo quickly becomes depressed. He complains that, heaven is here, where Juliet lives, and every cat and dog and little mouse, every unworthy thing, live here in heaven and may look on her, but Romeo may not (3.3.29 32). Romeo reveals that anywhere outside Verona is a place of purgatory if the unworthiest of creatures are able to gaze upon Juliet s beauty while he is stuck in Mantua. As a result, he believes that the banishment is worse than dying as he is tortured by the fact that he may never be able to see her again without the risk of being killed. The only way for Romeo to be together with Juliet is through the means of dying. As Romeo heard of Juliet s deceasement, he rushes to go to Verona despite the evident threat to his life, with poison, to kill himself alongside Juliet. He kills himself just before Juliet woke up. Juliet then kills herself so that they may be together in the afterlife regardless of if it is hell or heaven. Suicide is considered an utmost sin in Christianity and by killing himself, he rescinded his beliefs and religion to be with the one he loved. • 7. Research Paper On Cleopatra Tiffany Bowland Kate Jennings Western civilization 13 July 2016 Cleopatra the queen of the Nile: When I think back to Roman and Egyptian times the first name that comes to mind is Cleopatra. I envy her for many reasons. She was a great ruler, she had riches, she had fame and most of all she had an epic love story. There were not many female rulers or females with power when you look into history. Cleopatra is an example of many things, and is the epitome of a powerful historical female. Her name is synomious with beauty, power, intrigue and ultimately tragedy. In 69 BC Cleopatra was born into an Egyptian dynasty. A dynasty in decline and under the protection of Rome. With her death Cleopatra has achieved immortality through the personal story of love and tragedy. When we think of Cleopatra we automatically think of this story. But upon the research I learned that there were others and she was actually Cleopatra 7. Many books, plays, movies and stories have been made about the great queen of the Nile. Some tell us different sides of the story. Each have a little bit of difference in them so who really knows which one to believe. One thing is certain; Cleopatra was a great female ruler for her 22 years as the Egyptian queen. Ironically enough she wasn t even Egyptian or roman for that matter. She and her family were Greek. There are also many works that suggest that she was not a very pretty woman. Cleopatra s happiness didn t last, which seems that just like in all love stories her life doesn t have a happy ending. Another side of the story is that Marc killed himself after being surrounded by Octavia s troops, and then Cleopatra being held prisoner which is why she killed herself. I was very intrigued by each story that I read of Cleopatra s life and death and her rule, and I feel like I learned a lot. I think I will go on to watch some of the movies to see them played ... Essay about Leaving Las Vegas Leaving Las Vegas, directed by Mike Figgis and based on the autobiographical novel by John O Brien, is an emotional story about an alcoholic who rejects life and wants to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, and an unselfish prostitute who loves him the way he is. Ben, played by Nicholas Cage, was a formermovie producer in Los Angeles and has obviously crumbled in the glamour world of Hollywood which is shown in the opening scene. Here Ben is already an alcoholic when he disturbs former colleagues that are embarrassed of his appearance at the restaurant. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The director mainly used eye level shots, to leave it up to the audience to judge the two main characters of the movie, although certain power struggles in the film are shown from high angles to illustrate someone dominating a conversation or argument. Figgis also uses some point of view shots to show the imbalance during Ben s drunken periods where the camera is placed at an oblique angle to show tension and approaching movements. The images in the film are in high contrast with streaks of blackness and harsh shafts of light to underline the dramatic events that occur. When it comes to the editing, Figgis mainly used cutting to continuity to preserve the fluidity of most events without the necessity to show them all. The director also uses flash forwards a few times to give you an idea about the destiny of Sera, which is shown when she reflects about her encounter with Ben to an invisible therapist. Figgis also shot the movie using Super 16mm film to give it a tense, documentary feel. The music is also very unique because the jazzy soundtrack isn t the usual music in a movie with such an emotional and dramatic plot. The actors have a great impact on the success of this movie because the extremely difficult roles were played by excellent actor stars. • 9. American Imperialism And The Laguna Pueblo History Events that occur throughout a period of time have an interesting effect on the people, places, and landscapes around it. In the course of history, particularly the history of North American Indigenous Peoples, we can see how events have influenced their way of life. Since the arrival of Europeans in North America, it is easy to notice how a singular event can cause shifts within indigenous cultures, communities and the landscape. Although shifts within and between cultures and communities can be good, the shifts Native Americans faced with the arrival of Europeans were usually not. For centuries Natives struggled to preserve their lands, culture, and people as they were slowly being assimilated into the new Euro American way of life and colonization. In this, we can not only see the works of Euro American hegemony but also the fight of Natives to defend and protect their cultural sovereignty. Throughout the course of this essay I am going to explore the ways in which Euro American hegemony and the fight to preserve culture relate to the Laguna Pueblo history in the novel, Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko. The novel, Ceremony, takes place in the early 19th century in the southwest United States. We meet the main character Tayo who is half white and half Laguna Pueblo. His mother had an affair with a white man and left Tayo to be raised by his aunt when he was four. When we first meet Tayo he has recently returned to the reservation after World War II and is ... He told them that, Each man has a purpose in my army and each man before me will be expected to fulfill that duty (O Reilly.14). Patton did more than just inspire his men from a concealed hideout, far from the danger of the front lines, he also journeyed in his Willy Jeep to the front lines to guide the assault. He was a high value target and escaped death on numerous occasions but he maintained his composure on these ever increasing excursions. Odysseus himself did great things but he expected to be a role model to his men as well. (Yip) Harburg the Legendary Lyricist of the 1930 s gives us a large picture of it in his song Brother Can You Spare a Dime (Chochran 284). Harburg is a famous lyricist of several genres ranging from escapism to comedy and romanticism. In every lyric he writes, he consistently [views it] as a means for expressing his opinions against war and in favor of racial equality and economic justice (Chochran 285). People began blaming themselves for their misfortune. They believed that success went to those who worked hard and deserved it (Cook, Karan 415). Therefore, people blamed themselves for the loss of their jobs and the inability to support their families during this economic crisis. This sense of self blame and self doubt was perhaps the reason for an increase in suicide rates during this period (Cook, Karan 415). It was during this event that Harburg wrote his song, Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? , that represented the struggles the people were going through. As the song represented all of the Americans who built the great nation, those who had earth to plow or guns to bear (3) and those who built a railroad (9) or built a tower (13) many were able to identify themselves with the singer and perhaps had a much deeper understanding of the song s meaning. Harburg strengthens his credibility and thus appeals to ethos by directly characterizing the singer as someone the reader already knows, like the kid with the drum (20), and the reader s pal (23) who they called Al (21). Public healthas stated by Richard Riegelman is about knowing what not only makes us sick but also knowing what makes us healthy and how that can be achieved if we come together and work as a community.2 Public healthis everything around us and because of that it has the responsibility of focusing on everything and everyone. Public health looks beyond the answer for a cure, it looks at the how, why, when, where, what and therefore a solution on how to protect not only the individual but serves an entire population. Competition within the healthcare delivery system is something that began the moment public health was developed because the process of public health was separate from the development of private medical practices. We still deal with the differences between these two sectors; one main reason being that their public health approach was population based and took a prevention viewpoint when practitioners took an individualistic approach to cure diseases not prevent them. 1The healthcare delivery system complements public health in the aspect that they hold together a system that was created for the sole purpose of taking care of others health. America was a playground for the ideas of these enlightened men. Born in Florida, Missouri, Clemens childhood was filled with adventures much like those found in both The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Following his childhood experiences, Clemens worked on steamboats on the Mississippi River up until the river was closed during the Civil War. The war opened his eyes to the issue of slavery, which shows up in many of his works, including Huckleberry Finn. Masters wrote: HENRY got me with child, /Knowing that I could not bring forth life /Without losing my own. Here, the character, Amanda Barker, retells of how her husband, Henry, killed her. He was fully aware that she could not have a child without losing her own life, yet he impregnates her anyway. When an organization is growing and expanding, they will run into issues where they have successes and failures alike. The organization has to take these and develop best practices to utilize going forward. These best practices or benchmarks are what allows the organization to grow and what makes the organization grow. When mistakes are made, these need to be documented and then a plan put into place that then passes the information along, so that the organization as a whole learns from the mistakes of their predecessors. • 37. Children With ADHD In Elementary Schools As a teacher of elementary school you work with all different types of children. Some children are very advanced and excel in their work and others take longer to catch on and comprehend the curriculum being taught. Children with ADHD sometimes get labeled as not being very intelligent but in most children with ADHD that is not the case in fact these types of kids tend to be very bright. Their problem does not lie with lack of intelligence but with being able to sit still and focus long enough to be taught something. Now as a teacher of elementary schoolyou are working with young children that already have very short attention spans so just because a child has a hard time sitting still for an hour doesn t automatically make them have ADHD. But difficulty sitting still and paying attention during class would definitely be something to look for. Ask them if their child at home shows the same warning signs such as excessive talking, having to have what they want now, unable to follow directions, and never finishing what they start. How Did Pope John Paul II Have A Free Response To Religion As displayed in the film, Pope John II , we can see that Pope John Paul II shows many characteristics of a faith fulfilled man such as, that it is risky and requires a free response. I think a main part in the movie where his faith is risked is when he denies his girlfriend of pushing their relationship into something more. He denied her offer. I feel like her had the calling of Godto him to become a priest earlier and that a family and marriage was his thing. • 39. Mental Illness In Gran Torino Our experiences shape who we are. Gran Torino by Clint Eastwood is a moving film that depicts topics such as racism, mental illness and sacrifice in a modern setting without sugarcoating. In the film, korean war veteran and curmudgeon Walt Kowalski becomes an unexpected hero and father figure to nextdoor neighbour Thao Lor. Gran Torino begins in a funeral home, where protagonist Walt is mourning the death of his spouse, grimacing at the reality of being widowed and the disrespect of his children and their families. After the death of his wife, Mr. Kowalski does little other than drink his weight in beer daily and make critical comments towards his neighbours and surrounding community. Besides the company of his yellow labrador Daisy, Walt is alone with his thoughts. Because Walt acquired racism through experience where the race he discriminates was an enemy in reality, it is not truly one of his traits and can be undone as he is human and is able to overcome his mental illness, which is the reasoning for his intolerance. Initially, Walt is racist because he has been trained not to trust koreans and will not be bothered to distinguish the difference between who he had fought and his neighbours. He struggles to realize that he is no longer at war and mentally is unable to move on from that state of mind. In a scene following Walt s first threat towards the gang, it is evidently identified that he is still living in the past through an interaction between him and Father ... • 41. The World s Experience with Different Types of... Throughout history the world has experienced several types of socio economies, from Mussolini s fascism to Mao s communism. All of those economies have its weaknesses and strengths and most have countries that can validate its effectiveness. Yet, only one economy has risen above the rest. But before we could decide which economy is truly better for society, there has to be criteria on which to judge the economy s effectiveness. First, what is a society? In essence, it is a network of bonds we as human beings forge under the assumption, that working together we can all be happier than if we were only looking out for ourselves. With society, everyone is able to concentrate on what they do best, reap the benefits from the skills of others, and avoid the conflict that would arise otherwise. Thus, it follows that the ultimate goal of society is to ensure the happiness of everyone. And currently, only one economy has staved off the test of time and reached that goal. Capitalism, with its merit system, flexible cost adjustments, and having no other economic contenders is able to achieve a better society than any other socio economic system can. By having an economic system that rewards merit rather than mediocrity, capitalism stimulates the market as well as individuals to progress and innovate, thus improving the overall welfare of its society. In a capitalist society, it is the people that produce that get rewarded. Entrepreneurs or companies that come up with a new product, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Traditional Management Styles And Disciplinary Techniques... If you do that again, you will be in big trouble! This is an exclamation that is heard all around the world, in many different languages. It is heard in houses, schools, play groups, and many other places. It is said by parents and teachers alike. The problem with that phrase is the consequence. Alfie Kohnand Forrest Gathercoal are two experts in classroom management. They both believe that traditional management stylesand disciplinary techniques need some adjustments. One can gather from reading both Kohn s and Gathercoal s works that there is quite a large amount of sense behind that and schools really should reexamine these practices. Kohn believes that many of the disciplinary methods used in today s schools do not create an ethical child. Kohn (2006) tells us, By contrast, ethical sophistication consists of some blend of principles and caring, of knowing how one ought to act and being concerned about others. Punishment does absolutely nothing to promote either of these things (p. 29). When children are disciplined, they will only remember that doing whatever the wrong thing was, has the effect of discipline. This will impair them later because they may not know why the action was wrong. It will not teach them right from wrong. Kohn (2006) also talks about coercion. The description used is, The most basic way to get what you want from someone, assuming you have more power than he does, is just to make him do it (Kohn, 2006, p. 22). It is argued ... According to the Salvation Army and Care Haven, it is Hard to See Black and Blue on a White upper class woman because viewers focus on her gold and white dress, rather than on the bruises that cover her body. The sponsors of the public service announcement put a gold and white dress on a battered woman to incorporate a popular phenomenon with something serious: domestic violence. Within the last decade, there has been an increase in reported incidents of domestic violenceamong upper class renowned Americans males. Martha Ross, a reporter, interviewed a few of these men. All of them blamed their actions on accidents or the woman ( Charlie Sheen? ). Despite these men s excuses, they still gain support; instead of taking the abuser s side people need to protect women. One group that understands the need to protect women from these types of men is the Salvation Army; they have a division called CareHaven that specializes in sheltering women and their children who have experienced domestic abuse (Salvation Army s CareHaven). Artists and musicians can change a society and have an enormous impact on how a country runs itself. A good example of how a country can be influenced by new, innovative music would be the Tropicalismo movement. Caetano Velosois a Brazilian musician that started the Tropicalia movement and created music that combined many elements of different music together, and Veloso did this with other tropicalists. The background of Caetano Veloso, the two songs Caetano Veloso produced, information about Tropicalia, and the background of Brazil can help us comprehend how music has a great impact and influence on society. Tropicalia is more than just a music genre produced in the late 1960s, but a social political movement that radically changed the way Brazilians saw contemporary Brazilian music. • 47. Test For Aggregation Bias On The United States Personal... The purpose of this analysis is to test for aggregation bias in the United States Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE). This paper uses first and second generation panel unit root testsfootnote{For more information see Hurlin (2007). } on the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA) that make up the PCE. Second generation tests differ from first generation tests in that the latter drop the assumption of cross sectional independence the error term. Aggregation bias exists if NIPA inflationdifferentials converge or diverge at different levels of aggregation. An inflation differential is the difference between inflation rates in one sector and the inflation rate in another sector. Higher levels of aggregation are made to represent the lower, more dis aggregate levels. If aggregates properly represent the underlying data then each level should converge or diverge the same. Aggregation is important because the process used to aggregate the data may remove information from the data and create divergent inflation differentials when dis aggregate inflation rates converge. Monetary policy of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is based on a target inflation rate, however there are concerns that if the FOMC focus s on aggregate inflation it may cause individual sectors to diverge. Clark (2006) uses dis aggregate quarterly NIPA accounts to study the distribution of inflation persistence across consumption sectors. Inflation persistence is the tendency of inflation to ... These epithets were reinforced to define a characteristic style of stereotyping by playing on the attitudes that predominated among Anglo filmmakers and their white audiences (Keller 14). Two particular silent films both exemplify how stereotypes have played on racist Anglo American attitudes: the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Birth of a Nation. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, shows how minority groups are kept as subjects to Anglos. For example, several camera shots showed how this was thought to be true. A monkey, to which African Americans have been commonly referred then and even now, is shown climbing a stick, and a white bird is perched at the peak of the stick, pecking at the monkey to keep him from climbing up the stick. This scene has several intentions. According to the dictionary punishment is the infliction or imposition of a penalty for an offense. Examples of punishment include: loss of recess time, extra homework, detention, and loss of other privileges. According to the dictionary the definition of reinforcement is the process of encouraging or establishing a belief or pattern of behavior, especially by encouragement or reward. Examples of reinforcement are: teacher praise, earning privileges, teacher attention, taking away a homework assignment, extra recess time, and extending a deadline. Positive reinforcement and punishment within a classroom are constantly being tested to see which ones more effective when shaping a child s behavior, but in my opinion positive reinforcement is the better option. • 53. The Influence Of The American Soldiers During World War II Who would have ever thought a small amount of rice with raw fish on top of it would become so popular across the world? Sushi s fame jumped an ocean across and became popular in the USA. Many factors contributed to its popularization and has helped make its place in the American cuisine. As time passed by, the simple creations of sushievolved to complicated combinations and eye catching presentations today. This change was welcomed because it gave a new perspective of the dish, giving it a new face. One of the factors that made sushi popular was the influence of the American soldiers. After World War II (WWII), American soldiers who were led by General Douglas MacArthur occupied Japan. During the war, sushi shops were forced to close due to rationing. There were not enough rice to reopen the shops after the war. The American forces created a program where people would be the ones to bring their own rice to the shop if they wanted sushi. The sushi chef would then use the rice brought by the customers to make sushi for them. This allowed for the shops to reopen and function. This popularized sushi outside of Tokyo (sushi was mainly sold in the city). One can say, sushi was saved by the American forces. If the American forces had not stepped in and created the program to help revive the sushi shops, no doubt would there be sushi shops open today. Sushi would not have had the chance to spread outside of Tokyo. Another factor is The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. This was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
