Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

objective:
Improve skills in Adobe Indesign and demonstrate ability to
create stationary for a cohesive brand.
process:
1. In Adobe InDesign, I imported my logo and tried positioning
in different areas on the page. I added horizontal bars, and a
larger version of the logo as a watermark.
2. Using the same font faces and colors, I created a two sided
business card in a separated document.
3. Used GIMP to crop the logo for the back of the business
card, because I was getting close to deadline, and didn’t
have time to figure it out in Illustrator or InDesign. Besides
trimming off the bottom of the logo for this one element,
all other elements were developed in Adobe software.

objective:
Learn to use Photoshop to add text and design elements to a

process:
1. I took a photo of an old Spider-man action figure. I then
imported that photo into Photoshop, and adjusted the levels
and vibrance.
2. I duplicated the layer, and made the bottom layer black and
white. I used a layer mask to show Spidey in full color with a
black and white background.
3. I added the horizontal bars, text, and color swatch circles.
I used a layer mask to have Spidey’s head in front of the
horizontal bars. I adjusted the opacity of the horizontal bars to
let some of the background show through.
