Design a magazine cover that features a high quality self-portrait and
intriguing titles for articles that would be featured in the magazine.
Date:
5 May 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 ~ 12 / Sara Tranberg
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop®
Adobe InDesign®
Objectives:
• Using InDesign, create a magazine cover, 8.5 x 11 inches with 0.25 inch
margins and portrait orientation.
• Combine good typography skills with the FOCUS design process to
create an engaging piece.
• Include 3-5 articles and a dominant self-portrait, along with date and
issue number.
Process:
I developed a new magazine idea and selected a title that would intrigue
my audience – Hyperlative. This magazine would reflect some of my
more unique characteristics.
I started with paper and pencil sketches of possible layouts to determine
flow and spacing. Moving to InDesign, I created a matching shape map. I
posed for a self-portrait, then adjusted the new image using Photoshop.
Back in InDesign, I uploaded the image and added text. The final step
was to export the new design for presentation.

Create a photodesign project for a company that is looking for a
photographer/designer who can use Photoshop well.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 ~ 12 / Sara Tranberg
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop®
Objectives:
• Using PhotoShop, create a full-bleed, 8.5 x 11 inch design.
• Include an original, new quality image, a consistent color scheme
based on that image, some text, and a few design elements.
• Include the color scheme in the design.
Process:
I chose to create a flyer that would be used to advertise an upcoming
exhibit of aircraft models at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
I sketched out possbile layouts and then set up my photo studio. I
used a technique called “light painting” to create a subtle effect that
highlights the aircraft that is the focus of the image.
In PhotoShop, I adjusted the image to get the correct color and focus,
added text boxes and the color scale elements. Finally, I exported the
design for presentation.

Design a business identity for a client, including a new logo, business
card and letterhead.
Date:
2 June 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 ~ 12 / Sara Tranberg
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator®
Adobe InDesign®
Objectives:
• Using Illustrator, create a new logo.
• Design layouts for a business card and letterhead in InDesign.
• Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11 inches.
• Business card should be 3.5 x 2. inches, front and back.
Process:
I created a fictitious maritime security company named Anchor & Rode.
This is a kind of play on words, since “rode” is a nautical term for an
anchor rope or chain.
Based on my sketches, I created variations on the logo in Illustrator
and then selected the most appealing. That logo and color scheme then
became the basis for the letterhead and business card. Using InDesign,
I designed a layout for the letterhead, using the anchor motif as a
recurring element. Finally, I transferred the design from the letterhead
onto the front and back of the business card. Exporting the design for
presentation was the last step.

Using the logo from the Business Identity Project, showcase and create
a webpage layout. The client would like to see a logo design as well as a
description of the design process.
Date:

Program(s)/Tools:

Notepad ++
Objectives:
• Use the logo from the Business Identity Project. Size the logo so the
longest side is 300 – 500 pixels.
• Create a webpage layout in HTML5 and CSS using Notepad++. Ensure
that the HTML and CSS both validate.
• Minimum of 200 words.
Process:
Building on the logo and color scheme I created for the Business Identity,
I designed a website to introduce the logo, as well as describing the
process for creating it.
The HTML and CSS coding were done using Notepad++, which is a free
software. Validation of the HTML and CSS is an important step before
publishing a website, so I used the validator available from w3schools.
Once validated, I prepared the project for publication.

Mockingbird
Objectives:
• Use PhotoShop to create a web page layout for a website.
• Must include a wireframe (aka: shape map) and a .psd with layers
based on the 960 web design grid for accurate sizing and precise
coding.
Process:
Previous work on the Business Identity provided the logo and color
scheme for the web design. Sketches were the first step, which I created
using Mockingbird. Next I designed the wireframes in PhotoShop, to
indicate relationships and placement. These were set on a 12-column
grid. Placement of the logo, design elements, and text boxes completed
the design. The wireframes and the final design were them exported for
presentation to the client.

• Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo.
• Clip one image in Photoshop and text-wrap in InDesign.
• Write at least 250 words of original copy.
Process:
I chose to create a brochure to advertise my own web business – Hanging
Pawn Chess. I created new images and adjusted them in PhotoShop. I also
created a new logo in Illustrator, which I did not have prior to this project.
Using InDesign, I created a layout for an 8 1/2 x 11 inch landscaped
brochure, with 1/8 inch bleed on all sides. I added graphics, photo images
and text boxes to complete the design. I exported and printed the
project for presentation.

well as the company’s blog.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 ~ 12 / Sara Tranberg
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator®
Objectives:
• Collect data from websites, databases, or your own surveys.
• Include at least 4 graphics/icons and at least one graph or chart.
• Add a logo that you created, as well as the references to sources.
• Include Color Swatches as part of the design with swatches labeled
with color names from Visual FOCUS color wheel and the Color Scheme
title included in layout.
Process:
I collected data about the U.S. flag, including some history, design,
customs and courtesies, and sales data.
Following the creation of sketches, I selected a color scheme and
determined a size. The next step was to design icons, graphics, and
layout using Adobe Illustrator. Then I added text blocks, a timeline and
a graph. Designing and inserting a logo wrapped up the design. I then
exported the infographic for presentation.

You are working for a Christian non-profit organization and you’ve been
asked to create a spiritual poster montage using images and type. You
can use a scripture, a quote, a thought, whatever you choose, but it must
be spiritual in nature.
Date:
26 May 2016
Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop®
Objectives:
• Montage should be at least 1650×1275 pixels, created in PhotoShop.
• Choose two or more images. Create this montage by using a layer
mask to blend images.
• Apply at least one filter to only a portion of the image.
Process:
I chose to use an excerpt from a poem I wrote many years ago as
my theme. Since it involves keys and bridges, it naturally meets the
requirement for two or more images.
Two of the three images are my own work, with the third being retrieved
from the internet. I uploaded the images into PhotoShop and made
basic adjustments. Layering the images and adding layer masks came
next, then text, colors, and typefaces. The completed design was then
exported for presentation.

Objectives:

Process:
This project reminded me of a technical writing class where they asked us
to write the process for eating an Oreo. We had to assume that we were
teaching an alien who had just landed on earth.
I created new images based on my sketches. These images were adjusted
in PhotoShop and then uploaded to Prezi. Adding text and animations
was the final step. The completed presentation was exported for sharing

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop®
Adobe InDesign®
Objectives:
• Select a famous artist from the 20th century and design a compile a
short biography.
• Use InDesign to create a poster that reflects the philosophy and
design style of the artist.
• Include SFMOMA icon, date and location of the exhibit.
Process:
I selected Abram Games, a graphic artist famous in England for
propaganda posters during World War II. Games liked word play and there
is a tip-of-the-hat here. His name is positioned above the subtitle, “On
War”, so we literally see Games on war.
Using ideas from my sketches, I took original photos and uploaded them
to PhotoShop, where I made adjustments and a clipping mask of the
aircraft. The next step was to create the layout in InDesign and upload
the images. Adding and arranging the title and text were the final steps.
I then exported the finished design ready for presentation.
