Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Edgy Tech Tools or How I Plan to Wow! Students This Year!
Just to give a little background before we jump right in. This presentation came about due to my recent immersion into the world of technology specifically a course that I took through ODU and having been to a technology fair hosted in my county. This immersion then became the impetus to try to see if there were things that I could add to my teaching repertoire. A lot of what I will share is appropriate for any grade level with some tweaks made to them. Feel free to jump right in if you know something that I don’t or a few other ideas that might help us all. Here goes!
44:17
Voki will say: Welcome everyone to Edgy Tech Tools! I’m Bridget but our human for today’s presentation is Monique Howe-Freeman, a librarian from Loudoun County Public Schools. We will be sharing some amazingly new technology with you today that can be used in the classroom. The only caution for you is that it is addictive so be careful.
This is a Voki and we will be talking more about it later.
44:01
So, our agenda is posted. I will not insult your ability to read with reading them but I will add that for today we are helping one another to be the best that we can be. Technological applications are being created by the millions every day and to keep up with the latest and greatest we must share with one another.
43:01
Voki allows you to create an avatar similar to the one that I had introduce me. So unless you have seen the movie, Avatar this will be an unfamiliar term. Which I hadn’t until this…an avatar is an icon or figure representing a particular person in computer games or internet forums and now we can easily create one online to use in a classroom. This website takes you through the entire process in a matter of minutes. Students will love it because it gives them the opportunity to create something unique and the only limitation is their own imagination. It is free so that’s a boon, however you can purchase it specifically for your classroom.
42:57
Remember, the boring book report that everyone had to do and the one that today some of us still do for lack of something better? Well, kiss it goodbye as we use Voki to do a book talk with students. The assignment is to create a talk about a book that you have read and submit it by the end of class to the teacher. The SOL is for 9th grade, however this particular activity could be used for any grade level.
42:30
Some other ideas that I’ve been thinking about…in the library, use it to introduce a genre or how to use the electronic card catalog. Sometimes we are out of the building, what about using a Voki to leave directions for student work for the day? Using the voki to read an activity to a student who needs one on one assistance. It can’t really teach your student but for some it may be comforting to know that the teacher is there in voice if not in presence.
Cat says: Any questions? Don’t let the cat get your tongue. Coming up next is Blabberize.
41:39
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have an inanimate object talk? Blabberize gives voice to talking pictures and not the movies. Take a photo, add a mouth, and what comes out of it is totally up to you. The website makes the entire process very simple and it takes all of 5 minutes to complete depending on how complicated you want to make it.
41:13
For this activity in a first grade classroom, I would have them read a biography on George Washington. Students would then determine what the important facts were and create a blabberize for that important historical figure. This particular one is approximately 1 minute in length so I will not share all of it but I did want to be sure to give you a taste of Blabberize.
George says, “My name is George Washington. I was born February 22, 1732 in the British colony of Virginia. I joined Virginia’s army and later became the head of the army. The British King kept making the colonies pay high taxes so I and others decided to fight for America’s freedom. This war was the American Revolution and I was in charge of the whole army against the British. After 8 long years, the American colonies were free. We had no government so I helped create the Constitution. I was then chosen to be the 1st president of the United States. I was president for 8 years. Washington, D.C., the Washington Monument, Washington state, and George Washington University are all named in my honor. I am even on the $1.00 bill. Out of all of America’s presidents, I am the one most loved.”
What fun!
39:38
These are just a few other ways to incorporate it into your classroom. From a librarian perspective, how much fun would it be if the book were the one to Blabberize about itself to get students to pick it up off the shelf and take to check-out. Any questions? Check out our next tech tool!
39:17
Tagxedo is another type of word cloud that is all the rage with everyone right now. You take a bunch of words that are on the same topic and create a visual picture. This is a lot like Wordle but I have found that this is easier and more visually appealing.
39:06
For this activity, 5th grade students would create a Tagxedo of their vocabulary for a unit that they are learning about in their science class. Half the fun is coming up with the design but also examine the profusion of vocabulary content and color. Now you can see what they learned from the unit that you just taught.
38:43
Just a few ideas for how you can use Tagxedo in your classroom. In addition, as a librarian, what a great way of announcing new books to the library or events for the month. Any questions? Time to take a pic! Next, let’s look at Pixabay.
38:22
Pixabay has free public domain photos, illustrations and graphics that can be used for just about anything! Be aware however that the first images that come up when you are searching will come from Shutterstock. The images from Shutterstock are not free, it is the ones that come after that you can feel free to utilize.
37:57
Use Pixabay to get the art of Hans Holbeing and an unknown Cubist artist, have students determine if the art is realistic or if it is distorted. Have them defend their answer using the pictures. What do you think? Which one is realistic and which is distorted? How do you know?
37:33
Most of the images that I’ve used for this presentation have come from Pixabay. As a librarian, you may want to emphasize to both students and teachers the importance of citing their photo sources and that by utilizing this simple tool, they have no worries. Yay! Especially since we know that they use a lot of the photos off the internet without permission.
37:11
Tellagami unlike some of the other applications that I have shared with you today is strictly for your phone. I would hope that one day you could actually utilize it on your computer but for now it is strictly a phone application. You take a picture using your camera phone and then you can create an animated person who can talk about whatever it is you wish. You can also write on your animated picture with your finger in multiple colors. The animated person can also speak if you type a message for it to say or you can record your own voice for a 30 second block of time. The Tellagami app is delivered via email, Facebook, or Twitter.
36:32
For this homework assignment, I would have students take a picture of an example of each type of rock. They would create their animated person who would then share what type of rock it was. What a fun assignment utilizing the technology they own with a real life opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned from science class.
36:09
Just a few suggestions for the use of tellagami in the classroom but even more than that is just the opportunity for students to be able to take real pictures and insert an avatar that they create to convey information. What if a teacher or student were traveling to a uniquely scenic area, they can now send back information about the area which they have just visited.
35:09
These are but a few of the edgy technology that is out there today. Also take a look at Shelfari, QR Code Monkey, Doppelme, and Glogster. All great sites with wonderful opportunities to connect with students in the classroom and in the library. Happy Tech Time and I thank you for spending this time with me today! Any further questions? Thanks!
