Course Description - Pharmacognosy is the study of medicinal drugs derived from plants or other natural sources.
- The American Society of Pharmacognosy defines pharmacognosy as "the study of the
physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or
potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from
natural sources.”
- It is also defined as the study of crude drugs.
- This course introduces the pharmacy student to the science and application of therapeutically
active components of plants and other natural sources
A. 3.5 Credit Units
B. AIM: To provide an understanding of drugs obtained from plants and other natural sources and their active medicinal components to the
pharmacy training students
C. The OBJECTIVES of the course are to:
i. Describe the phytochemistry of plants of medicinal value
ii. Describe the pharmacological activities of drugs of natural origin
iii. Identify the indigenous existing medicinal plants in the country
iv. Identify the different groups of pharmaceutically active substances
v. Isolate active components of natural sources of drugs
vi. Analyze the structures of different groups of pharmaceutically active ingredients from plant sources
vii. Demonstrate alkaloid production in artificial culture
viii. Justify the use of drugs of natural origin
ix. Appreciate the indigenous medicinal products
x. Identify plants of pharmaceutical significance
xi. Discuss the principles related to the commercial production of natural plants

7. Analyze the macroscopic structures of different groups of pharmaceutically active ingredients
8. Demonstrate alkaloid production in artificial culture
9. Justifies the use of drugs of natural origin
10. Appreciates the indigenous medicinal products
Teaching & Learning Methods
1. Class lectures and lecture notes are designed to achieve the course objectives.
2. Students should read the assigned topics from recommended textbooks before class and participate in class.
3. Students should ask questions - Ask lots of questions.
4. Tutorials will be conducted to encourage discussions and further understanding of material taught in lectures.
5. Students are expected to have answers to tutorial questions for them to be allowed to attend.
6. Students are expected to attend ALL lectures. Students with less than 85% attendance will not be allowed to write end of year
examinations*
7. Students should undertake ALL laboratory practicals

Bwalya Total Teaching Hours 120 Hours Total Contact Hours for Lab / Clinical/Tutorials / Workshops Sessions 120 Hours Course Description - Pharmacognosy is the study of medicinal drugs derived from plants or other natural sources. - The American Society of Pharmacognosy defines pharmacognosy as "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources.” - It is also defined as the study of crude drugs. - This course introduces the pharmacy student to the science and application of therapeutically active components of plants and other natural sources A. 3.5 Credit Units B. AIM: To provide an understanding of drugs obtained from plants and other natural sources and their active medicinal components to the pharmacy training students C. The OBJECTIVES of the course are to: i. Describe the phytochemistry of plants of medicinal value ii. Describe the pharmacological activities of drugs of natural origin iii. Identify the indigenous existing medicinal plants in the country iv. Identify the different groups of pharmaceutically active substances v. Isolate active components of natural sources of drugs vi. Analyze the structures of different groups of pharmaceutically active ingredients from plant sources vii. Demonstrate alkaloid production in artificial culture viii. Justify the use of drugs of natural origin ix. Appreciate the indigenous medicinal products x. Identify plants of pharmaceutical significance xi. Discuss the principles related to the commercial production of natural plants

Class lectures and lecture notes are designed to achieve the course objectives. 2. Students should read the assigned topics from recommended textbooks before class and participate in class. 3. Students should ask questions - Ask lots of questions. 4. Tutorials will be conducted to encourage discussions and further understanding of material taught in lectures. 5. Students are expected to have answers to tutorial questions for them to be allowed to attend. 6. Students are expected to attend ALL lectures. Students with less than 85% attendance will not be allowed to write end of year examinations* 7. Students should undertake ALL laboratory practicals 8.
