1. Plate Tectonics
The earth's crust is not one solid piece.
There are 7 large pieces of the earth's
crust called 'plates.'
2. Borders of the Plates
What happens
where plates
meet?
Mountain Ranges
Earthquakes
Tsunamis
Volcanoes
3. Mountains
Mountains are
formed when
plates collide.
The two plates
force the crust of
the earth to raise
up, creating
mountains
An example is the
Himalayan
Mountains.
The highest
mountain is
Mount Everest.
4. Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur
when plates touch
as they move.
This happens a lot in
the Pacific 'Ring of
Fire.'
This causes frequent
earthquakes in
places such as
California and
Japan.
5. Volcanos
Volcanos occur in
●
gaps or holes in
the crust.
Hot magma from the
●
mantle bursts
through the gaps
to create a volcano.
Hawaii is an example
●
of an island made
entirely of
volcanoes
6. Tsunamis
Tsunamis occur
when plates
shift under the
ocean.
Powerful water
currents create
massive waves.
Tsunamis can be
very destructive,
such as in
Thailand in
2004.
