THIS IS A GROUND HOG
to hibernate (verb)- to sleep through the winter
hibernation (noun)- comes from hibernate (long
sleep through the winter)
legend- old story that is told from parents to
children, and children's children, and so on for
many many years
shadow- darkness made where the light can't go
through (when the sun shines you can see the
dark outline of your body on the ground)
What are groundhogs?
They are small furry animals. Furry
means their bodies are covered with
hair.
They have short ears, a short tail, and
short legs.
Groundhogs are common in the
northeastern and central part of the
United States.
What is the folklore of Groundhog
Day?
Every year on February 2nd
in Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania), a
groundhog tells us how many more
weeks of winter there will be.
If the groundhog sees his shadow,
there will be six more weeks of winter
weather. If he does not see his
shadow, there will be an early spring.
The groundhog in this photo sees its
shadow, so there will be six more
weeks of winter weather.
We are often asked, "Just who are
these guys in the top hats?" Well,
these gentlemen are known as the
Groundhog Club's Inner Circle. They're
responsible for carrying on the
tradition of Groundhog Day every
year.
