Final Major Project Evaluation
As my Final Major Project is now moving closer to the end, I will now be evaluating each i ndividual technical skill and production
process to see how my final major project turned out overall. Due to these factors, I will therefore input my opinion in the
document stating if I thought the processes went well, and if not I will state how I could have changed this particular aspect to
make my final media product substantially better. I will also be concluding whether if I think I managed my time effectively and if
not how it could have been improved upon.
In contrast, the first aspect I am going to evaluate which happened to be encoded within the text of my film opening title sequence
is the technical quality of my product therefore, within this particular paragraph I am going to talk about the footage, use of audio
(diegetic and non-diegetic, editing, layout and the composition of all my shots encoded. With the film footage, I decided to use a
Canon 700D DSLR camera which allowed me to obtain high definition film footage due to this fact, I was able to gain effectively
focused and thorough footage which would work substantially within my film opening title sequence. However, although the
majority of the footage was in focus as I filmed my footage on a DSLR my camera on the other hand, had a large exposure to light
which made some aspects of my footage really hard to colour correct on Adobe After Effects. Due to this fact, I therefore
thoroughly believe that if I was to re-shoot some of my filmfootage again I would try and move the camera away from the sky light
because that affected me badly when I was trying to make my footage look darker and more intens e on Adobe After Effects as the
sky remained white. In addition, due to this fact if I come to filmanother thriller film opening title sequence and I need to make the
footage look darker I will either; move the camera away from the sky light so it isn’t a s exposed to the light or film my footage at
the relevant time at night however, if I was to do this I would have to equip a lighting set so my demographic target audience can
see thoroughly what is visually happeningon screen. For example, if I was to filmat my firstlocation at night (back garden) I would
have to film just before 18:12pm as that is when the sun set on Monday 14th March, 2016 due to this fact if I went off schedule
when filming and it became too dark I would therefore, have to use my lighting set effectively to create a low key and intense
lighting. Additionally, in reference to the audio which I applied to my film opening title sequence; I managed to apply two different
types of non-diegetic music. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that these two soundtracks were used effectively in my film
opening title sequence as they functioned in a way which allowed them to build intensity at a substantial and effective speed. Due
to these contributingfactors,I was therefore able to adhere to the thriller filmgenre conventions as well as appeal to my intended
demographical target audience (E, D, C1) followed by the possibility of C2. Despite these facts, I do think my second soundtrack
within my filmopening title sequence which was titled ‘Aftermath – Madness Paranoia’ slightly adhered to horror film conventions
as the music sounded like it was conducted by a piano and chime therefore, making my film opening title sequence more spooky
and deranged instead of intense although, I still believe that my soundtrack was able to make my media product slightly intense at
the same time. Furthermore, in reference to my second soundtrack which was titled ‘Eyes Gone Wrong’ I do believe that this
particular one made my title sequence more intense in comparison to the other soundtrack (Aftermath – Madness Paranoia) as
with the Eyes Gone Wrong soundtrack I cut a quick two second clip out of the track which sounded like a ferocious bang therefore,
this on the other hand could have made my audience jump while at the same time portraying the correct type of film (thriller) . In
addition, as the film opening title sequence was coming to an end I managed to perfectly cut my first soundtrack so it faded out at
the end in an intense manor as the title ‘Redemption’ and ‘No one ever wins the fight between life and death’ appeared and fa ded
therefore I believe this on the other hand sent off the enigma code as my audience would have immediately started to ask
questions such as ‘What is going to happen next?’ and ‘Will the protagonist ever redeem his sins?’. Due to this fact, I therefore
believe that this soundtrack substantially pushed the cliff-hanger which I left at the end of the film as the protagonist fell into his
sleep in the back alley late at night. In contrast, in reference to my final font style I managed to select a font style from the website
‘dafont.com’ which portrayed a thrilling mood. For example, on the title ‘Redemption’ the audience should have been able to
clearly see the markings, bruises and shots on the title therefore, this on the other hand would have pushed the narrative forward
as I was trying to portray the protagonistcharacters life now after these events have taken place as if he now lives by a scar which
has mentally and physically defeated him over time which lead him to committing criminal offences.
Furthermore, in reference to the editing skills which I applied to my film opening title sequence; I thoroughly believe that I was
able to make my film opening title sequence much more intense through the usage of the two software types Adobe After Effects
and Adobe Premier. For example, when I was editing all of my digital film footage on Adobe After Effects which I shot on a DSLR
camera I decided to colour correct all of my footage so I could make them much darker and intense and I knew by doing this I
would be ableto adhere to the thriller filmconventions as well as substantially appeal towards my intended demographical target
audience (E, D, C1). Once again for example, when I was on Adobe After Effects I decided to use colour correcting skills such as;
curves, exposure, brightness and contrast, and levels. By applying the majority of these tools I was able to make the majority of my
digital film footage much darker while also applying a slight blue tint which managed to portray a much colder mood within th e
text of my filmopening title sequence. In addition,as stated before when I was editing on this particular softwareI did have quite a
substantial amount of trouble as the majority of my footage displayed the sky light and I was unable to edit this aspect without a
photo of some form of dark clouds and if I did manage to get a photo of the clouds it would be very time consuming as I would
DeclanTyldesley
have to develop and entirely new editing skill or technique which would have allowed me to make my footage much more intense.
However, in contrast while I was editing my film footage on this software I also had to try and make some scenes a bit lighter
because when we was filming the bedroom scenes I didn’t allow enough light to get to the DSLR camera therefore, the footage
came out looking substantially darker than it was supposed to. Due to this fact, I therefore had to use some of the same colour
correction tools but this time I would adjust each level a bit higher so I could make my footage more visible towards my intended
demographical target audience. Although I made these scenes a bit brighter I still believe that they managed to build intensity as
well as any other scene, and if I was to re-film these scenes again I would definitely go back and open some more blinds so that
more light is able to get to my DSLR camera and I believe if I would have done this, it would have been much easier to make the
footage darker as the footage wouldn’t have been exposed towards the white sky light. In contrast, when I was editing on Adobe
After Effects I also had to edit all of my filmopening titles.Additionally, with this particular aspect I decided to use an effective and
efficient method which would appeal towards my target audience as well as adhere to the thriller film conventions. In addition,
with every single title I decided to apply a simple fade in and out as I wanted to portray a very serious and formal mood to show
that my protagonist character isn’t just in a depressed state and that he wants to do something better with hi s life. I was able to
apply this particular editing technique by adjusting the opacity on all of my titles. I started off by putting the opacity on 0% and
then two seconds later I would add a key point and then once again change the opacity to 100% once I have done this I would then
adjust the opacity back to 0% to create a simple fade in and out which adhered to the thriller film conventions. In evidence, within
my research I analysed three different film opening title sequences and two of them used a simple fade in and out as the film
director also wanted to adhere towards the films conventions. However, once I rendered out all of my film footage and film titles I
realised that I didn’t select ‘audio output’ on my film footage when I was exporting and with my titles I forgot to change a
particular aspect which would have allowed me to play the titles over the film footage. Due to these facts, I therefore worked very
un-efficiently at this stage as I had to go back and render everything all over again therefore; overall it took me around two hours
to render every singleaspectback out and into my E Driveso I could start editing on Adobe Premier. In addition, if I was to go back
I would definitely make sure that all of my footage and titles are rendered out correctly so I can continue working efficiently and
get to Adobe Premiere at an effective speed.
In contrast, when I moved over to the second form of software I had to piece all of my film footage together in a chronological
order however, when I was also editing on this software I had to make it look like the protagonist was dreaming of all of these
different events within his sleep this on the other hand would have adhered to the films conventions as it is stated that a thriller
film follows a chronological order with the usage of flashbacks. In addition, once I pieced together all of my film footage and film
titles in chronological order I then decided to use a new editing skill which I never learnt before and it was double exposure. I
wanted to apply this particulareditingskill because I knew that it would feel more like it is dreaming as it shows to different forms
of film footage at the same time. As always, as I was learning something new I messed up quite heavily a few times as at some
points it would show nothing but a black screen and in other time it just showed one shot however, after multiple attempts I
managed to apply double exposure to two of my shots at the start of my film opening title sequence therefore, making my
demographic target audience believe that my protagonistcharacter is dreaming of these events. For evidence, please view the first
twenty seconds of my film opening title sequence. In addition, as I have now developed an entirely new editing skill I will now be
able to make my future pieces of work much better due to this newly developed post-production skill and if I was to apply double
exposure again I seriously doubt that I would have as much trouble as I did this time therefore, allowing me to work more
efficiently on future media products for clients. In addition, once I finished piecing together all of my film opening title sequence I
was then able to export itindividually as I have completed a video project before and once I had exported my media product there
were no problems at all as I viewed the project as it exported into my E Drive, due to this fact I was therefore able to go straight to
YouTube so I could import and upload my media product to complete task 6 on my Final Major Project. Another essential point
was the layout of my film opening title sequence and as stated before I structured my film opening title sequence in chronological
order with the usage of flashbacks and dreams. Subsequently, I therefore thoroughly believe that the layout of my film opening
title sequence was easy to understand as I used editing techniques such as double exposure therefore, essentially showing my
demographic target audience that he is dreamingand realisingthe events which took placethat day. In addition,I also managed to
make each individual shot pace a bit faster as the film opening title sequence progressed therefore; by doing this I was able to
build intensity at an effective speed within my final media product. Furthermore, an aspect which I thought worked substantially
well within my title sequence was when my protagonist character Ross jumped from his sleep because at this point the audience
should have realised that it is real, so he can execute his mission within the redeeming fight between ‘life and death’. Also when
Ross woke up I used a CUS of his face and within the layout I cut to a CUS of Joe’s face to try and portray how similar these two
characters are, in a way I wanted to say one has become the other and I don’t think I portrayed that. Due to this fact, if I was to go
back I would definitely use a few different layoutand cinematography skillswhich could portray that these two characters are very
similar therefore, their fate it unknown or noticeable. Subsequently, in reference to the composition of all my shots; I thoroughly
believe that I used a wide variety of cinematography movements which allowed to pace my shots at a ferocious speed to different
camera angles which allowed me to substantially adhere to the thriller film conventions as well as appeal to my intended
demographical target audience. For example, some cinematography angles which I used within my film opening title sequence
DeclanTyldesley
were; CUS, LS, MS, ECUS, TS, PS, WAS, LAS, HAS and an ES. In addition, all of the film footage displayed within my film opening title
sequence was all hand held and due to this fact I therefore, believe within the title sequence there was quite a lot of shaky camera
movements despite this fact, I do believe that the shaky camera movements built intensity as it could have portrayed the
protagonists breathing state which at the time was very heavy as he was being followed by someone who will more than definitely
defeat his confidence. In addition, all of my film footage varied from slow-paces to fast-paces which I think worked effectively
within my film opening title sequence. For example, during the boxing sequences I decided do direct the camera operator to use
very steady and fast cinematography movements in evidence, when the protagonist started to punch the punching bag in front of
him I decided to use steady camera movements which would slowly jump and move every time he punched the bag. I used this
composition technique because I wanted my intended demographical target audience to feel my protagonist’s anger. In addition,
once I composed all of these shots atthis particular location I then reviewed all of the filmfootage which we shot and if it was okay
we will move forth to the next location and if not I and my camera crew will have to re-film some shots which we might have
ruined with digital noise. Thankfully, at this location we did not have to re-shoot any of the footage therefore, we were able to
move effectively to the next location (back alley).
Additionally, I thoroughly believe when studying this unit I have managed to effectively further develop some of my existing skills
as well as develop some new production skills which I have newly required from my Final Major Project. For example, a few skills
which I have managed to further develop are my producing and directing skills, I have developed these particular skills because
within this project I have had to produce an entire film opening title sequence therefore; allowing me to do my own research and
planning methods which I am going to apply to my title sequence along the way. In evidence, within this project I’ve had to
produce scripts, storyboards, location reconnaissance, filming schedules, call sheets and a risk assessment. These aspects on the
other hand have therefore, given me a more developed understanding on what I would ha ve to do if I was to produce a short film
or another film opening title sequence. Also as stated before I have developed my directing skills as well, I have developed this
particular skill because within the production phase I have had to manage around all of my actors and actresses as well as my
camera crew. A film director has to do this effectively because if his actors or camera crew don’t know what they are doing the
client will not be given the correct product as the director didn’t direct the production correctly. Furthermore, as I was developing
this particular skill I did have some issues along the way as I still didn’t have the greatest understanding on how to direct a film
opening title sequence. However, as opposed to my lastfilmopeningtitle sequence I do know I have developed this specific skill as
this particular title sequence turned out much better than my first which was titled ‘The Avenger’. In addition, if I was to go back
and re-direct an aspect of my film opening title sequence I would probably draw to the back alley location because I can tell by
watching my film opening title sequence that this location wasn’t directed effectively due to the lack of shots and substanti al
amount of shaky cinematography movements. Therefore, if I was to go back I would definitely take a lot more control so I can gain
much better film footage which will work more effectively in my film opening title sequence titled Redemption. Furthermore, from
my Final Major ProjectI havealso managed to develop my actingskillsas I starred as the protagonist Ross in the film opening title
sequence. Due to this fact, I have now learnt how to take on a particular acting role and how to portray them with my own twist
for example, with this character I knew that he was very depressed and angry about the events which had taken place in the past
therefore, when portraying this character I had to prove to myself and to my intended demographical target audience that I was
this character therefore, I was substantially motivated to progress my skills within the acting industry. In contrast, a skill which I
newly acquired within my Final Major Project was an editing skill. As stated before when I was in the post-production phase I
applied double exposure to two of my shots therefore, allowing me to develop a new skill within post-production. With this
particular newly acquired skill I managed to make my film opening title sequence much easier to understand and it also made it
much more intense as the audience now knew that he was dreaming about these events. In addition, this on the other hand will
now allow me to apply this newly acquired skill to my future projects and I will do this because it can make things flow much
smoother and efficiently.
Furthermore, once I completed my film opening title sequence I then went back to view my proposal form to see whether or not it
matched my final and original intentions stated in my proposal formand on my pitch. In addition, within my proposal form I stated
what form of media product which I wanted to create and it was a film opening title sequence, I stated that I wanted to make this
product because I had done this type of project before therefore, I would knew what to i nclude and what not to include which
leaves elliptical elements. In reference to my final productI thoroughly believe that I did everything stated within this aspect of the
proposal form as I managed to leave my title sequence on a cliff-hanger therefore, leaving elliptical elements which will force the
my intended target audience to start asking questions (enigma code). In addition, on my proposal form I also had to state the
synopsis of my idea, and within this aspect I included every fine detail to what I would encode within the text of my film opening
title sequence, within this aspect of the proposal form it should also give the readers a clear insight into what I am trying to
portray. In disparity, my film opening title sequence on the other hand, in my opinion followed the majority of aspects which I
stated within the synopsis of my idea therefore, my title sequence more than likely would have adhered to the film conventions as
well as appeal to my intended demographical target audience. Within the first paragraph focusing on the synopsis of my idea I
talked about particular technical skills such as the lighting, audio, character development, and the font design as well as this I also
DeclanTyldesley
went on to talk about location and compositional camera movements. For example, within my film opening title sequence I believe
that I was able to apply an effective amount of low key lighting which made my title sequence much more intense. For example,
when we were filming the bedroom scenes we used low key lighting as I wanted to portray the darkness and desolation of his
dream or nightmare. However, in reference to my audio usage within the title sequence I don’t thoroughly believe that I outlined
the aspects stated within my proposal form as I didn’t manage to apply any diegetic sounds of breathing therefore, if I was to go
back and record different types of audio I will definitely consider this aspect as it would have made my title sequence much more
intense. Despite these facts, on the other hand I did manage to apply two non-diegetic types of music which I believe worked
effectively as it built intensity at a substantial speed. In addition, in reference to the character development I thoroughly believe
that my filmopening title sequence effectively developed my protagonistcharacter as my character was seen as a very angry, dark
and depressed character which I think I portrayed thoroughly. But despite all these aspects of my character he is also very
reluctant. However, if I was to go back I think I would try and develop a bit more backstory by possibly showingan old fami ly photo
when he was happy. In addition, in reference to my antagonist I wanted my audience to start asking questions (enigma code) as
they’d have no idea who this person is. However, within my film opening title sequence I believe I showed my antagonist i n too
much detail therefore, my audience were not forced to ask questions. Due to this fact, if I was to go back I would more than likel y
leave a lot more elliptical elements. Subsequently, in reference to my font deign I thoroughly believe that within my title sequence
I selected a very thorough, formal and intense font style which appealed to a majority of social demographic profiles which are; E,
D, C1, C2, B and A. Furthermore, within my film opening title sequence I also believe that I used effective locations which allowed
me to build intensity. In addition, I think my best location was the back alley because it was slightly gothic as the trees were jagged
with a lack of leaves therefore, portraying death and danger. In reference, to this aspect I believe that my title sequence outlined
everything stated within my proposal form. In addition, within the synopsis of my idea I also talked about the compositional
camera movements which will be encoded within the title sequence; for example some of the camera movements which I wanted
to apply were; TS, LAS, HAS, MS, CUS, LS, WAS and a ECUS. Due to these facts, I believe that within my film opening title sequence
I applied these entire camera movements which made my title sequence much more intense, but despite this it also made my film
opening title sequence flow much smoother and efficiently therefore, making it easier to watch. Also within the synopsis of my
idea I also talked about the narrativestructures and that I wanted to apply a linear narrative with the usage of some flashbacks. In
reference to my film opening title sequence I thoroughly believe that that I followed these narrative structures as it was a linear
narrativeand itdid show some flashbacks. However, if I was to go back and edit again I will edititso it looks like he is looking back
at these events which took place in the past. Also I do believe that I followed the intended narrative development as the majority
of my audienceprofiles should have understood that my protagonist character will go on a mission to redeem his past sins which
they saw throughout my film opening title sequence ‘Redemption’. Due to these contributing facts stated above, I therefore
thoroughly believe that my filmopening titlesequence portrayed a very evil and relentless mood which was distributed to all of my
demographic audience profiles. Furthermore, as I created a thriller film opening title sequence I wanted to attract quite a broad
demographic target audience however, at the same time I wanted my title sequence to relate to lower class profiles because
within my title sequence I showed events which might well of happened to the lower class profiles watching (E, D, C1). Also as my
film was a thriller I also tried to attract higher demographic profiles (C2, B, A) as there child might have suffered from pa rticular
events displayed within my film opening title sequence. However, despite this if I was to back and re-film I would probably try and
develop a new higher class profile character because by doing this I would allow particular profiles to relate to this charac ter
therefore, making them more interactive and intrigued with this character and the film itself. For example, a film which allowed
their target audience to relate to particular characters was a film named Taken (Morel, 2008). Subsequently, within my proposal
form I also talked aboutwhat production techniques I will use to help produce my film opening title sequence. Within this aspect I
stated that I would produce a substantial amount of research as well as storyboards, scripts, a risk assessment, a location
reconnaissance,a call sheet and a production schedule. As opposed, to my final research, planning and final product I thoroughly
believe that I followed all of these production techniques and because I did, I think I came out with a great final media product
(film opening title sequence) which substantially appealed towards my intended demographi cal target audience.
In difference, within my Final Major Project I also had to complete a weekly update of both a production schedule and production
dairy. These particular two aspects have allowed me to keep up to date with all the tasks I have had to complete over these past
months, if I got everything right and didn’t mess up because if I did some tasks could have been left behind. For example, my most
complicated week which I had to stay on top of was the week of 22/02/2016 as I had a total amount of two research tasks to
complete as well as four pre-production tasks. I choose to place these tasks together like this because I knew if I was able to
complete all of these particular tasks I would be able to progress further ahead therefore, allowing me to start production earlier
than expected. In addition, when I was planningmy production scheduleI had to consider all of my advantages and disadvantages
so I could therefore, plan it carefully and leave enough time for the aspects I am not that great at. In evidence, before I planned the
schedule I knew already that I was quite an effective researcher and producer therefore; I could complete both the research and
pre-production aspect in a short amount of time due to my past experience in these particular aspects. In addition, in evidence I
managed to complete both of these particular aspects within an eight week time gap. As opposed, as I am not incredibly talented
with production and post-production I therefore; left a substantial time gap of twelve weeks so I could thoroughly complete every
DeclanTyldesley
single task in thorough detail to make sure my final media product is at a professional standard. Despite these facts, on the other
hand I do still consider myself to be a fairly talented film director therefore, I only gave myself the time required which I would
need in order to complete filming at my four and thorough locations. In evidence, I managed to complete all of my production
phase within the space of four weeks although, I did complete filming in three weeks I was just disrupted quite heavily by a
weather hazard therefore, we were unable able to film on the date I set too. However, I did deal with this particular hazard at an
effective speed because as soon as I noticed the hazard I called together the crew which was needed on location so we could
arrange a new filming date in the week to come. After we negotiated I then re-scheduled to film within the week 04/04/2016 on a
Tuesday, as I checked the weather and it was not forecasted to rain on that particular date. Furthermore, when we were filming on
this particular date we encountered a minor practical constraint and the constraint appeared when we were filming the short fight
sequence which took place in the back alley. The problem was that as my character Ross would be thrown on the ground I wanted
the camera to be directly below him as he fell to show the height of his fall therefore, when we came to a decision I decided to
direct the camera moving away from my body as I fell, and when I hit the floor the camera would lift up and show a HAS of my
body to show my characters weakness and the antagonists power. Due to this fact, I therefore believe that I and my crew
overcame this particular constraint by using an effective, intense and thorough technical strategy which will turn out just as good
than the original plan of my self-falling on top of my demographic audience profiles vision. Also I decided to schedule all of my
filming times just before sunset (18:12) so I could obtain substantial amounts of effective and useful footage which will
substantially adhere towards the thriller film genre conventions as well as appeal towards my intended demographical target
audience. Additionally, as stated before I am not great within the post-production phase therefore, within this phase I left a
substantial ten week time gap so I could edit every aspect of my film footage. I will edit my footage by colour correcting every
scene to make it darker therefore; these scenes on the other hand will make my film opening title sequence much more intense
due to the colour of the locations used within the title sequence. However, despite all of these time management aspects, I did on
the other hand have multipleother units to attend to therefore, the work on my final major projectwas affected slightly as I had to
focus on other units as well, and predominantly film studies (Unit 26).
Subsequently, I also conducted a questionnairewhich I made on a website survey conductor named Survey Monkey. This particular
survey on the other hand included a total amount of nine questions and they all focused on different aspects which were encoded
within my film opening title sequence named ‘Redemption’. In addition, once I conducted all of my questions I then distributed my
survey to multiple social class demographics including social class profiles; E, D, C1, C2, B and A. Additionally, below I will now
discussand debate how my opinion contradicts with my audiences’ opinion whether they are negative or positive opinions. Once I
have given my opinion I will then go onto criticise their feedback which they have given me to decide whether or not I think their
opinion is relevant or correct. In addition, within my survey I also managed to gain both quantitative and qualitative data which I
thoroughly believe has had an influence on the future projects which I will create. Also my survey ended up with a total amount of
fourteen respondents, who answered all of my questions in thorough and professional detail. Please view the next page to see my
survey questions and answers…
DeclanTyldesley
Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the firstquestion within questionnaire, the question which I asked towards my
intended demographical target audience was; ‘Do you think I used an effective soundtrack within my film opening title sequence?’
In addition, I wanted to ask this particular question as I was generally slightly confused whether or not the two non-diegetic
soundtracks used within my film opening title sequence worked effectively as I’m not sure they built intensity at a substantial
speed which I expected them too. I think this because as stated above I thoroughly believe that this soundtrack made my film
sound like a horror however, at the same time my footage was kind of contradicting the non-diegetic audio. Despite these facts,
within my research I did state that the thriller film genre is very similar to the action and horror genres therefore, alongs ide this
fact I therefore believe that my film opening title sequence soundtrack un-expectantly adhered to the thriller and horror film
conventions. As opposed, on the other hand all of my fourteen survey respondents (100%) answered with ‘Yes’ therefore, telling
me that people from different demographic social classes thought that my soundtrack worked effectively within my film opening
title sequence. Due to the facts, stated above I thoroughly believe that the majority of these answers were fairly considerate as I
do not fully believe that I selected the correct soundtrack for my film opening title sequence as it sounded more like a horror film,
but the titlesequence did not visually. To conclude, I am still very happy with the responses I gained from this particular question
as all of my survey respondents believed that the soundtrack was used effectively. However, if I was to go back and re-edit this
specific question I will ask ‘Why?’ because by asking this I would have been able to obtain more qualitative data as well as
quantitative data.
DeclanTyldesley
Additionally, as you can see above I have displayed the second question which I conducted within my questionnaire, the question
which I asked towards my intended demographical target audience was; ‘Which genre do you think my film opening title sequence
developed?’ below I then left a total amount of six different genres so them to select. In addition, I wanted to ask this particular
question because I wasn’t sure on what genre my title sequence developed however, I did know what genre I set out to develop
which was a thriller. I wasn’t sure because as stated above the two soundtracks which I selected developed more of a horror genre
as it was orchestrated with instruments that are very conventional towards the horror genre as the soundtrack overall turns o ut
spooky, dark and mysterious. Despite these facts and my opinion, the social class demographics un-expectantly answered with the
the intended genre which I set out to create. For example, four of the survey respondents (28.57%) thought that my film opening
title sequence developed a drama genre, and the other ten respondents (71.43%) thought that my film opening title sequence
DeclanTyldesley
developed the thriller filmgenre. In addition, I also completely understand why some of the demographic who filled out my su rvey
answered with ‘Drama’ because the title sequence kind of portrayed this s tereotypical English drama with gangs, violence, love
interests and redemption. However, this was not coincidental as I actually set out to follow the thriller film genre but also touch
upon an English drama because I thought by doing this I would be able to attract a much broader demographical target audience.
In addition, although I am not fully confident with these answers I am still very happy with these particular answers as none of my
survey respondents did not answer with any of the followingfilm genres; Horror, Action, Biographical, or Romance. In conclusion,
if I was to go back and re-edit this particular question I would also add a comment box so I could have asked my audience ‘Why?’
they thought my title sequence developed the genre they selected also therefore, by doing this I would have been able to obta in
both qualitative and quantitative data.
In contrast, as you can see above I have displayed the third question which I choose to conduct within my questionnaire created by
Survey Monkey, the question which I asked towards my intended social classdemographics was; ‘Do you think the cinematography
movements used within the title sequence adhered to genre conventions?’ and below this particular question I left three different
tick boxes (Yes, No, Sometimes). Additionally, I wanted to ask this specific question because the cinematography within my title
sequence was hand held therefore, making the majority of camera movements shaky and hard to decode in reference to my target
audience. Also some of the cinematography was also out of focus therefore, the audience watching on the other hand would not
have been able to every fine aspect in clear detail due to this fact, I should have probably become a much more reluctant direc tor
on set to ensure that my camera operator films every shotin clear focus. Despite these facts, within my film opening title sequence
I managed to director the camera operator into creating slow and fast cinematography movements which matched both the non -
DeclanTyldesley
diegetic audio and mise en scene displayed on screen therefore, due to this fact my demogra phic target audience would have
appealed to the cinematography movements as I expected them to adhere towards the thriller film genre conventions. In contrast,
a total amount of fourteen survey respondents (93.33%) answered with ‘Yes’ therefore, one survey respondent (6.67%) answered
with ‘Sometimes’. In addition, due to these answers my confidence has therefore been raised on the quality and effectiveness of
my final media product. Also in reference to these answers I am very happy with them all because despite all of the camera shake
and lack of focus my demographic target audience still believe that the cinematography movements encoded adhere to the thriller
film conventions. However, if I was to go back and re-edit an aspect of this question I would once again ask why because then I
would have been able to gather both qualitative and quantitative data to improve my future pieces of work.
Subsequently, as you can see above I have displayed the fourth question which I choose to conduct with my questionnaire created
by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked towards my intended demographical target audience was; ‘What did you like or
enjoy about my film opening title sequence?’ also as a disclaimer I created this particular question because I finally wanted to
obtain some qualitativedata as I thought itwould help me substantially if I was to create any future film opening title sequences or
a short film.In addition, one aspect which I thoroughly enjoyed about my film opening title sequence was the boxing sequences as
within these aspects of the film opening title sequence I managed to really portray my protagonist character’s (Ross) anger and
desolation therefore, within these scenes I really had to put my back into out and make myself into this angry and reluctant
character. Also an aspect which helped me with these scenes was my past, because within the past I used to box therefore, I could
placethose elements into my character to help alongthe way with anger, desolation and depression. Also as you can see under my
question I managed to collect a total amount of fourteen different answers surrounding my film opening title sequence. As an
DeclanTyldesley
example, one of my survey respondents answered with; ‘I liked how you structured your film opening title sequence as I could tell
he was in a dream and visually seeingall of these events’ with this particular answer I was fairly surprised because I thought I could
have structured my title sequence much better because in my opinion it wasn’t that great. However, despite this fact as one of my
survey respondents commented on this aspect I therefore, now now that my editing and structural skills aren’t that bad overall. As
another example, one of my survey respondents stated; ‘I think the cinematography of the sequence worked well, created a sense
of realism’also with this answer I was again fairly surprised because as stated before some of the camera shots were out of focus
and very shaky however, I am happy that my title sequence created a sense of realism because that is what I was going for; to try
and make it as realistic aspossibleto worry a few demographic about this happening to them. To conclude, overall I am very happy
and surprised with the answers I obtained of this question as all of the were in very thorough detail allowing me to collect relevant
qualitative data.
Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the fifth question which I choose to conduct within my questionnaire created
by Survey Monkey, the which I asked my demographic target audience was; ‘Do you think my film opening title sequence
developed the narrative as well as leave elliptical elements?’ once again under this specific question I gave my a udience three
options which were; yes, no, and sometimes. In my opinion, I do thoroughly believe that my film opening title sequence develo ped
the narrative at an effective speed as I managed to create a plot within the first few seconds which was noticeable to all of my
target audience. In evidence, within the title sequence I managed to develop a stereotypical plot of redemption hints why I
selected the title ‘Redemption’, I did this by showing a tragic event of the protagonist character being ‘jumped’ in a back alley
therefore, he’ll want to redeem this event. However, in terms of the narrative I believe my film opening title sequence slightly
DeclanTyldesley
followed the three act structure as the stakes and cliff-hanger weren’t incredibly effective. Although this factor may be more than
true I still believe that I was able to leave elliptical elements within my film opening title sequence I didn’t develop one particular
character which is Morgan portrayed by Nicole Melia, I did this by showing her briefly within the title sequence as a form of love
interest and then when my protagonist character turned around to see who was there, there was nothing displayed… This on the
other hand would have left elliptical elements because my audience won’t know if she is just a figure of imagination therefore, I
also managed to use the enigma code, forcing my audience to ask questions. In contrast, a total amount of thirteen survey
respondents (92.86%) answered with ‘Yes’ and one survey respondent (7.14%) answered with ‘Sometimes’. In addition, due to the
facts stated above I did expect to receive these particular answers, but if I was to go back and get more information I would ask
why because then I would have been able to find out why one of my respondents answered with ‘Sometimes’. Due to this fact, if I
would have done this I would have also been able to collect qualitative data which could have helped me produce or create my
future film or media projects. To conclude, if I was to go back and re-film my title sequence I would definitely consider using
techniques which would have raised the stakes because by doing this I would have been able to leave my narrative development
on a cliff-hanger.
In addition,as you can see above I have now displayed the sixth question which was conducted within my questionnairecreated by
Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographical target audiencewas; ‘What would you rate my actors and actresses’
portrayal of their characters?’also asa disclaimer the protagonist character Ross was portrayed by Myself, the antagonist Joe was
DeclanTyldesley
portrayed by Adam Grundy and finally the Female lead (love interest) Morgan was portrayed by the actress Nicole Melia. Also
under this particular question I left six different options were; Excellent, Good, Satisfa ctory, Okay, Bad and Terrible. In addition, I
wanted to ask this particularquestion because I wanted to find out my audience’s opinion of the portrayal on all of the char acters
encoded within the text. In my opinion, I believe that all of the characters within the film opening title sequence were portrayed in
thorough detail due to the filmdirector and also the actors and actress. I also wanted to ask this specific question because I knew
from this that I would be ableto collectquantitativedata which will help me thoroughly within my future film or media projects. In
contrast, in reference to my survey respondent’s answers, two survey respondents (13.33%) answered with ‘Excellent’, eleven
survey respondents (73.33%) answered with ‘Good’ and another two survey respondents answered with ‘Satisfactory’. In addition,
if I was to go back and re-edit this particular question I would ask my demographic target audience why because by doing this I
would have been able to obtain qualitative data which would have helped me more substantially in the future. Also from this I
would have been able to develop a better understanding on whether or not to hire a particular actor or actress again as my
audience thought they did an amazing job when portraying their characters set by both the film producer and film director. As
stated before, if I was to go back and re-film my title sequence I would definitely include a much older character so people within
higher social class profiles can relate to that character, therefore by doing this I would be able to attract a broader demographic
target audience into watching this particular film opening title sequence.
Subsequently, as you can see above I have now displayed the seventh question which was conducted within my questionnaire
created by a website named Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my social demographic target audience was; ‘If you were
to change anything about my film opening title sequence, what would it be?’ I particularly wanted to ask this question because
from this question I would be able to obtain qualitative data which could help me substantially in the future, when I create more
film or media projects. In my opinion, if I was to change anything about my film opening title sequence it would be the non-
DeclanTyldesley
diegetic because as stated before I still thoroughly believe that, that particular soundtrack developed the horror genre due to the
instruments which it was orchestrated by. In addition, another aspect which I would change about my film opening title sequence
was one of the locations and believe it or not it would be the back alley. I would change this location because we were constantly
disturbed by people walking up and down therefore, we had to stop filming on multiple occasions and also the week following I
went out to try and find possiblelocations which I could haveused and I walked passed a location very similar to the other, but this
particular one seemed a lot more intense as there were trees without leaves and there was also a stream which could of portrayed
everything drifting away for my protagonist character. Despite these facts, one of my survey respondents answered the question
with ‘It needs a voiceover’ and I actually agree with this comment because within my proposal form I actually talked about
encoding a voiceover into my film opening title sequence as I believed it would have made the title sequence much more intense
and suspensive. Also another one of my survey respondents answered with; ‘It feels more of a short film to me, very specific three
act structure has been followed. For it to be a true opening sequence for a feature film, a cliff-hanger could have been used’ once
again I completely agree with this particular demographic because as stated above I also felt as if my title sequence follow a three
act structureas the stakes weren’t as high so the cliff-hanger which I intended to use wasn’t as effective. Due to this fact, if I was to
go back to my title sequence I will more than likely make the stakes much higher so my title sequence could have been used
effectively within a full feature film.To conclude,I thoroughly believe that this qualitative data is going to help me substantially in
the future with my film and media projects for clients.
Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the eighth question conducted within this particular questionnaire created by
Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographic target audience was ‘Do you think my film title (Redemption) adhered
towards the narrative of the film?’ I wanted to predominantly ask this particular question to gain quite a substantial amount of
quantitative data as I knew that these particular answers will prominently help with my screenwriting and treatment in the future
because as a screenwriter it is there job to select the correct title for the narrative of the film. For example, the film The Revenant
(G. Iñárritu, 2015) the word ‘revenant’ means a person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead and within the film
the character Hugh Glass is known to be dead. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that my film title adhered towards the narrative
DeclanTyldesley
of the film because the whole plot of the film is about someone trying to redeem their past sins when they were ‘jumped’ is a dark
and desolated back alley. Also my protagonist character only feels the way to get his life back on track is by redeeming himself in
the most brutal way possible towards the antagonist as he once did the same to him. In addition, my caption also developed fr om
the plot as it was’ ‘No one ever wins the fight between life and death’ because the protagonist soon realizes that he doesn’t have
to go down this road but will it be too late… In contrast, in reference to my answers a total amount of thirteen survey respondents
answered with ‘Yes’ and one survey respondent answered with ‘No’. Due to these answers I therefore believe that the majority of
my demographic target audience realized the title of my film as it adhered towards the narrative. However, as one survey
respondent answered with ‘No’ I wish I asked why because then I would have also been able to obtain qualitative data as well as
quantitative data. To conclude, also as stated before I also believe that these answers have given me ingenuity to continue
screenwriting as this particular film title (Redemption) adhered towards the narrative of my film.
Additionally, as you can see above I have managed to display the final question which was conducted within this questionnaire
created by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographic target audience was; ‘What rating would you give my film
opening title sequence out of ten? (1 being the worst and 10 being the best)’ I wanted to ask this particular question as I once
again wanted to obtain quite a substantial amount of statistical quantitative date which will help me create better pieces of work
which adhere to film conventions in the future. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that overall I did quite a good job with this
particular film opening title sequence, I think this because I believe that I directed this opening sequence effectively so that it
would adhere to the thriller film genre conventions and appeal to my social demographic target audience at a substantial speed. I
also believe that my actors and actress portrayed the characters I set them to effectively as the majority of my demographic target
DeclanTyldesley
audience thought all of their performances were good and some thought that they were excellent therefore, within my future
pieces I will definitely consider hiringthese people again to play similar roles or extremely different ones as they have my trust and
I know their skills within this particular department. In addition, with all of these contributing factors alongside me I can now
thoroughly say that this particular film opening title sequence in my opinion was much better than my first one which was titled
‘The Avenger’ as this filmopeningtitle sequence was ableto build intensity ata much more substantial rate. In contrast, as you can
see above the majority of my demographic audience profiles rated my film with an eight out of ten, from this question I also
received two nines, two sevens and one ten out of ten rating. Due to these facts, from these answers I thoroughly believe tha t my
future projects will be substantially better as I now know what to include within my title sequence so I can both appeal to a much
broader demographic target audience and adhere to particular film genre conventions dependent on which title sequence or film I
decide to produce and distributenext. In conclusion,in a ratingoutof ten I can confidently say that I will rate my film opening title
sequence an eight out of ten due to the vast majority of people which said this and also with the content that was included.
Finally, for the lastpartof my final major projectevaluation I amgoingto talk about, how I would respond to this particular project
brief if I was to execute this again. In addition, if I was to try executing this form of brief again I will more than definitely select a
different plot device to follow for my thriller film opening title sequence. For example, if I was to select a different plot device I
would probably set my title sequence in no more than two locations because with four locations I found it really difficult to
schedule all of the filming dates therefore, with two locations I will be able to work much more efficiently. If I had to select a
location right now I would probably choose a dark setting, set in a car park where some form of deal is happening therefore, if I
was to do this I could icon multiple different aspects with conventional CUS’s which are relevant towards the storyline. Due to this
fact, I will also be able to leave my title sequence on a much more substantial cliff-hanger as well as leave elliptical elements
(enigma code) forcingmy audienceto ask questions. In contrast,if I was to execute this project brief again I would more than likely
use a few different editing techniques as I believe the ones used within this particular technique were a bit rushed as out final
major project deadline was moved to an earlier date therefore, if I was to execute this again I would take a bit more time when
editing my title sequence because I believe if I would have taken my time it would have been much more effective and intense. For
example, if I would have taken another week editing my film opening title sequence I believe I would have been able to make all of
my shots a lot smoother throughout my title sequence and I also might have been able to apply a little more double exposure to
the majority of my shots when it was needed. In addition, I would also be more time efficient with the two different time
management aspects (production scheduleand dairy) which we had to fill out weekly, I think this because I believe I had taken too
much time focusing on these two aspects, too much in so many occasions I forgot to fill out both the production schedule and
production diary. Furthermore, if I was to execute this particular brief again I would more than likely apply a few more planning
methods for example, within one of my production weeks I could have gone out and execute a few test shots and sequences
because by doing this I would have been able to be a much more efficient film director as all of my crew would have known what
they are meant to do beforehand therefore, the only aspect which I will have to deal with is directing the actors and actress where
to go, where to stand, what to say etc. In addition, as I did not do this it made it very difficult for me to progress by film directing
skills as it was very stressful on set as the majority of the time I was the only one who knew what was taking place on the visual
screen therefore, this is a crucial aspect which I would need to execute if I was to complete this form of project brief again. To
conclude this aspect of my final major project evaluation, I don’t thoroughly believe that I will change the majority of aspects as I
thought I worked effectively within the research, pre-production, production and post-production phases therefore, there wasn’t
that much to change as the majority of aspects were completed at a professional (industry) standard. In addition, just before I
leave this paragraph if I had the funding for my filmopening title sequence I would definitely try use multiplicities of shots so I can
make effective and conventional quick cuts.
In my overall conclusion, to complete my Final Major Project, I thoroughly believe that this project brief overall, has given me a
more thorough knowledge in multiple different aspects of media such as; how clients operate with freelancers and production
companies’,and how filmproducers and directors use particular technical and research methods which can ultimately make their
final media product substantially better. Due to all of these contributing factors and this project brief I have also been heavily
boosted into going university and achievingthe highestgrade I possibly can, this project brief on the other hand has also given me
the ingenuity to go off and create, produce or screen write particular films which can truly have an influence on other people’s
lives and if I accomplish to make a film which ultimately changes someone’s life despite their demographic status I will be more
than happy to know that I have made a particular someone or group realise something true and meaningful. In conclusion, I also
believe that this project brief would have had the same influence on all of my colleagues to go off and do something great by
portraying a strong, powerful, and true semiotic message.

Final Major Project Evaluation

  • 1. DeclanTyldesley Final Major Project Evaluation As my Final Major Project is now moving closer to the end, I will now be evaluating each i ndividual technical skill and production process to see how my final major project turned out overall. Due to these factors, I will therefore input my opinion in the document stating if I thought the processes went well, and if not I will state how I could have changed this particular aspect to make my final media product substantially better. I will also be concluding whether if I think I managed my time effectively and if not how it could have been improved upon. In contrast, the first aspect I am going to evaluate which happened to be encoded within the text of my film opening title sequence is the technical quality of my product therefore, within this particular paragraph I am going to talk about the footage, use of audio (diegetic and non-diegetic, editing, layout and the composition of all my shots encoded. With the film footage, I decided to use a Canon 700D DSLR camera which allowed me to obtain high definition film footage due to this fact, I was able to gain effectively focused and thorough footage which would work substantially within my film opening title sequence. However, although the majority of the footage was in focus as I filmed my footage on a DSLR my camera on the other hand, had a large exposure to light which made some aspects of my footage really hard to colour correct on Adobe After Effects. Due to this fact, I therefore thoroughly believe that if I was to re-shoot some of my filmfootage again I would try and move the camera away from the sky light because that affected me badly when I was trying to make my footage look darker and more intens e on Adobe After Effects as the sky remained white. In addition, due to this fact if I come to filmanother thriller film opening title sequence and I need to make the footage look darker I will either; move the camera away from the sky light so it isn’t a s exposed to the light or film my footage at the relevant time at night however, if I was to do this I would have to equip a lighting set so my demographic target audience can see thoroughly what is visually happeningon screen. For example, if I was to filmat my firstlocation at night (back garden) I would have to film just before 18:12pm as that is when the sun set on Monday 14th March, 2016 due to this fact if I went off schedule when filming and it became too dark I would therefore, have to use my lighting set effectively to create a low key and intense lighting. Additionally, in reference to the audio which I applied to my film opening title sequence; I managed to apply two different types of non-diegetic music. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that these two soundtracks were used effectively in my film opening title sequence as they functioned in a way which allowed them to build intensity at a substantial and effective speed. Due to these contributingfactors,I was therefore able to adhere to the thriller filmgenre conventions as well as appeal to my intended demographical target audience (E, D, C1) followed by the possibility of C2. Despite these facts, I do think my second soundtrack within my filmopening title sequence which was titled ‘Aftermath – Madness Paranoia’ slightly adhered to horror film conventions as the music sounded like it was conducted by a piano and chime therefore, making my film opening title sequence more spooky and deranged instead of intense although, I still believe that my soundtrack was able to make my media product slightly intense at the same time. Furthermore, in reference to my second soundtrack which was titled ‘Eyes Gone Wrong’ I do believe that this particular one made my title sequence more intense in comparison to the other soundtrack (Aftermath – Madness Paranoia) as with the Eyes Gone Wrong soundtrack I cut a quick two second clip out of the track which sounded like a ferocious bang therefore, this on the other hand could have made my audience jump while at the same time portraying the correct type of film (thriller) . In addition, as the film opening title sequence was coming to an end I managed to perfectly cut my first soundtrack so it faded out at the end in an intense manor as the title ‘Redemption’ and ‘No one ever wins the fight between life and death’ appeared and fa ded therefore I believe this on the other hand sent off the enigma code as my audience would have immediately started to ask questions such as ‘What is going to happen next?’ and ‘Will the protagonist ever redeem his sins?’. Due to this fact, I therefore believe that this soundtrack substantially pushed the cliff-hanger which I left at the end of the film as the protagonist fell into his sleep in the back alley late at night. In contrast, in reference to my final font style I managed to select a font style from the website ‘dafont.com’ which portrayed a thrilling mood. For example, on the title ‘Redemption’ the audience should have been able to clearly see the markings, bruises and shots on the title therefore, this on the other hand would have pushed the narrative forward as I was trying to portray the protagonistcharacters life now after these events have taken place as if he now lives by a scar which has mentally and physically defeated him over time which lead him to committing criminal offences. Furthermore, in reference to the editing skills which I applied to my film opening title sequence; I thoroughly believe that I was able to make my film opening title sequence much more intense through the usage of the two software types Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premier. For example, when I was editing all of my digital film footage on Adobe After Effects which I shot on a DSLR camera I decided to colour correct all of my footage so I could make them much darker and intense and I knew by doing this I would be ableto adhere to the thriller filmconventions as well as substantially appeal towards my intended demographical target audience (E, D, C1). Once again for example, when I was on Adobe After Effects I decided to use colour correcting skills such as; curves, exposure, brightness and contrast, and levels. By applying the majority of these tools I was able to make the majority of my digital film footage much darker while also applying a slight blue tint which managed to portray a much colder mood within th e text of my filmopening title sequence. In addition,as stated before when I was editing on this particular softwareI did have quite a substantial amount of trouble as the majority of my footage displayed the sky light and I was unable to edit this aspect without a photo of some form of dark clouds and if I did manage to get a photo of the clouds it would be very time consuming as I would
  • 2. DeclanTyldesley have to develop and entirely new editing skill or technique which would have allowed me to make my footage much more intense. However, in contrast while I was editing my film footage on this software I also had to try and make some scenes a bit lighter because when we was filming the bedroom scenes I didn’t allow enough light to get to the DSLR camera therefore, the footage came out looking substantially darker than it was supposed to. Due to this fact, I therefore had to use some of the same colour correction tools but this time I would adjust each level a bit higher so I could make my footage more visible towards my intended demographical target audience. Although I made these scenes a bit brighter I still believe that they managed to build intensity as well as any other scene, and if I was to re-film these scenes again I would definitely go back and open some more blinds so that more light is able to get to my DSLR camera and I believe if I would have done this, it would have been much easier to make the footage darker as the footage wouldn’t have been exposed towards the white sky light. In contrast, when I was editing on Adobe After Effects I also had to edit all of my filmopening titles.Additionally, with this particular aspect I decided to use an effective and efficient method which would appeal towards my target audience as well as adhere to the thriller film conventions. In addition, with every single title I decided to apply a simple fade in and out as I wanted to portray a very serious and formal mood to show that my protagonist character isn’t just in a depressed state and that he wants to do something better with hi s life. I was able to apply this particular editing technique by adjusting the opacity on all of my titles. I started off by putting the opacity on 0% and then two seconds later I would add a key point and then once again change the opacity to 100% once I have done this I would then adjust the opacity back to 0% to create a simple fade in and out which adhered to the thriller film conventions. In evidence, within my research I analysed three different film opening title sequences and two of them used a simple fade in and out as the film director also wanted to adhere towards the films conventions. However, once I rendered out all of my film footage and film titles I realised that I didn’t select ‘audio output’ on my film footage when I was exporting and with my titles I forgot to change a particular aspect which would have allowed me to play the titles over the film footage. Due to these facts, I therefore worked very un-efficiently at this stage as I had to go back and render everything all over again therefore; overall it took me around two hours to render every singleaspectback out and into my E Driveso I could start editing on Adobe Premier. In addition, if I was to go back I would definitely make sure that all of my footage and titles are rendered out correctly so I can continue working efficiently and get to Adobe Premiere at an effective speed. In contrast, when I moved over to the second form of software I had to piece all of my film footage together in a chronological order however, when I was also editing on this software I had to make it look like the protagonist was dreaming of all of these different events within his sleep this on the other hand would have adhered to the films conventions as it is stated that a thriller film follows a chronological order with the usage of flashbacks. In addition, once I pieced together all of my film footage and film titles in chronological order I then decided to use a new editing skill which I never learnt before and it was double exposure. I wanted to apply this particulareditingskill because I knew that it would feel more like it is dreaming as it shows to different forms of film footage at the same time. As always, as I was learning something new I messed up quite heavily a few times as at some points it would show nothing but a black screen and in other time it just showed one shot however, after multiple attempts I managed to apply double exposure to two of my shots at the start of my film opening title sequence therefore, making my demographic target audience believe that my protagonistcharacter is dreaming of these events. For evidence, please view the first twenty seconds of my film opening title sequence. In addition, as I have now developed an entirely new editing skill I will now be able to make my future pieces of work much better due to this newly developed post-production skill and if I was to apply double exposure again I seriously doubt that I would have as much trouble as I did this time therefore, allowing me to work more efficiently on future media products for clients. In addition, once I finished piecing together all of my film opening title sequence I was then able to export itindividually as I have completed a video project before and once I had exported my media product there were no problems at all as I viewed the project as it exported into my E Drive, due to this fact I was therefore able to go straight to YouTube so I could import and upload my media product to complete task 6 on my Final Major Project. Another essential point was the layout of my film opening title sequence and as stated before I structured my film opening title sequence in chronological order with the usage of flashbacks and dreams. Subsequently, I therefore thoroughly believe that the layout of my film opening title sequence was easy to understand as I used editing techniques such as double exposure therefore, essentially showing my demographic target audience that he is dreamingand realisingthe events which took placethat day. In addition,I also managed to make each individual shot pace a bit faster as the film opening title sequence progressed therefore; by doing this I was able to build intensity at an effective speed within my final media product. Furthermore, an aspect which I thought worked substantially well within my title sequence was when my protagonist character Ross jumped from his sleep because at this point the audience should have realised that it is real, so he can execute his mission within the redeeming fight between ‘life and death’. Also when Ross woke up I used a CUS of his face and within the layout I cut to a CUS of Joe’s face to try and portray how similar these two characters are, in a way I wanted to say one has become the other and I don’t think I portrayed that. Due to this fact, if I was to go back I would definitely use a few different layoutand cinematography skillswhich could portray that these two characters are very similar therefore, their fate it unknown or noticeable. Subsequently, in reference to the composition of all my shots; I thoroughly believe that I used a wide variety of cinematography movements which allowed to pace my shots at a ferocious speed to different camera angles which allowed me to substantially adhere to the thriller film conventions as well as appeal to my intended demographical target audience. For example, some cinematography angles which I used within my film opening title sequence
  • 3. DeclanTyldesley were; CUS, LS, MS, ECUS, TS, PS, WAS, LAS, HAS and an ES. In addition, all of the film footage displayed within my film opening title sequence was all hand held and due to this fact I therefore, believe within the title sequence there was quite a lot of shaky camera movements despite this fact, I do believe that the shaky camera movements built intensity as it could have portrayed the protagonists breathing state which at the time was very heavy as he was being followed by someone who will more than definitely defeat his confidence. In addition, all of my film footage varied from slow-paces to fast-paces which I think worked effectively within my film opening title sequence. For example, during the boxing sequences I decided do direct the camera operator to use very steady and fast cinematography movements in evidence, when the protagonist started to punch the punching bag in front of him I decided to use steady camera movements which would slowly jump and move every time he punched the bag. I used this composition technique because I wanted my intended demographical target audience to feel my protagonist’s anger. In addition, once I composed all of these shots atthis particular location I then reviewed all of the filmfootage which we shot and if it was okay we will move forth to the next location and if not I and my camera crew will have to re-film some shots which we might have ruined with digital noise. Thankfully, at this location we did not have to re-shoot any of the footage therefore, we were able to move effectively to the next location (back alley). Additionally, I thoroughly believe when studying this unit I have managed to effectively further develop some of my existing skills as well as develop some new production skills which I have newly required from my Final Major Project. For example, a few skills which I have managed to further develop are my producing and directing skills, I have developed these particular skills because within this project I have had to produce an entire film opening title sequence therefore; allowing me to do my own research and planning methods which I am going to apply to my title sequence along the way. In evidence, within this project I’ve had to produce scripts, storyboards, location reconnaissance, filming schedules, call sheets and a risk assessment. These aspects on the other hand have therefore, given me a more developed understanding on what I would ha ve to do if I was to produce a short film or another film opening title sequence. Also as stated before I have developed my directing skills as well, I have developed this particular skill because within the production phase I have had to manage around all of my actors and actresses as well as my camera crew. A film director has to do this effectively because if his actors or camera crew don’t know what they are doing the client will not be given the correct product as the director didn’t direct the production correctly. Furthermore, as I was developing this particular skill I did have some issues along the way as I still didn’t have the greatest understanding on how to direct a film opening title sequence. However, as opposed to my lastfilmopeningtitle sequence I do know I have developed this specific skill as this particular title sequence turned out much better than my first which was titled ‘The Avenger’. In addition, if I was to go back and re-direct an aspect of my film opening title sequence I would probably draw to the back alley location because I can tell by watching my film opening title sequence that this location wasn’t directed effectively due to the lack of shots and substanti al amount of shaky cinematography movements. Therefore, if I was to go back I would definitely take a lot more control so I can gain much better film footage which will work more effectively in my film opening title sequence titled Redemption. Furthermore, from my Final Major ProjectI havealso managed to develop my actingskillsas I starred as the protagonist Ross in the film opening title sequence. Due to this fact, I have now learnt how to take on a particular acting role and how to portray them with my own twist for example, with this character I knew that he was very depressed and angry about the events which had taken place in the past therefore, when portraying this character I had to prove to myself and to my intended demographical target audience that I was this character therefore, I was substantially motivated to progress my skills within the acting industry. In contrast, a skill which I newly acquired within my Final Major Project was an editing skill. As stated before when I was in the post-production phase I applied double exposure to two of my shots therefore, allowing me to develop a new skill within post-production. With this particular newly acquired skill I managed to make my film opening title sequence much easier to understand and it also made it much more intense as the audience now knew that he was dreaming about these events. In addition, this on the other hand will now allow me to apply this newly acquired skill to my future projects and I will do this because it can make things flow much smoother and efficiently. Furthermore, once I completed my film opening title sequence I then went back to view my proposal form to see whether or not it matched my final and original intentions stated in my proposal formand on my pitch. In addition, within my proposal form I stated what form of media product which I wanted to create and it was a film opening title sequence, I stated that I wanted to make this product because I had done this type of project before therefore, I would knew what to i nclude and what not to include which leaves elliptical elements. In reference to my final productI thoroughly believe that I did everything stated within this aspect of the proposal form as I managed to leave my title sequence on a cliff-hanger therefore, leaving elliptical elements which will force the my intended target audience to start asking questions (enigma code). In addition, on my proposal form I also had to state the synopsis of my idea, and within this aspect I included every fine detail to what I would encode within the text of my film opening title sequence, within this aspect of the proposal form it should also give the readers a clear insight into what I am trying to portray. In disparity, my film opening title sequence on the other hand, in my opinion followed the majority of aspects which I stated within the synopsis of my idea therefore, my title sequence more than likely would have adhered to the film conventions as well as appeal to my intended demographical target audience. Within the first paragraph focusing on the synopsis of my idea I talked about particular technical skills such as the lighting, audio, character development, and the font design as well as this I also
  • 4. DeclanTyldesley went on to talk about location and compositional camera movements. For example, within my film opening title sequence I believe that I was able to apply an effective amount of low key lighting which made my title sequence much more intense. For example, when we were filming the bedroom scenes we used low key lighting as I wanted to portray the darkness and desolation of his dream or nightmare. However, in reference to my audio usage within the title sequence I don’t thoroughly believe that I outlined the aspects stated within my proposal form as I didn’t manage to apply any diegetic sounds of breathing therefore, if I was to go back and record different types of audio I will definitely consider this aspect as it would have made my title sequence much more intense. Despite these facts, on the other hand I did manage to apply two non-diegetic types of music which I believe worked effectively as it built intensity at a substantial speed. In addition, in reference to the character development I thoroughly believe that my filmopening title sequence effectively developed my protagonistcharacter as my character was seen as a very angry, dark and depressed character which I think I portrayed thoroughly. But despite all these aspects of my character he is also very reluctant. However, if I was to go back I think I would try and develop a bit more backstory by possibly showingan old fami ly photo when he was happy. In addition, in reference to my antagonist I wanted my audience to start asking questions (enigma code) as they’d have no idea who this person is. However, within my film opening title sequence I believe I showed my antagonist i n too much detail therefore, my audience were not forced to ask questions. Due to this fact, if I was to go back I would more than likel y leave a lot more elliptical elements. Subsequently, in reference to my font deign I thoroughly believe that within my title sequence I selected a very thorough, formal and intense font style which appealed to a majority of social demographic profiles which are; E, D, C1, C2, B and A. Furthermore, within my film opening title sequence I also believe that I used effective locations which allowed me to build intensity. In addition, I think my best location was the back alley because it was slightly gothic as the trees were jagged with a lack of leaves therefore, portraying death and danger. In reference, to this aspect I believe that my title sequence outlined everything stated within my proposal form. In addition, within the synopsis of my idea I also talked about the compositional camera movements which will be encoded within the title sequence; for example some of the camera movements which I wanted to apply were; TS, LAS, HAS, MS, CUS, LS, WAS and a ECUS. Due to these facts, I believe that within my film opening title sequence I applied these entire camera movements which made my title sequence much more intense, but despite this it also made my film opening title sequence flow much smoother and efficiently therefore, making it easier to watch. Also within the synopsis of my idea I also talked about the narrativestructures and that I wanted to apply a linear narrative with the usage of some flashbacks. In reference to my film opening title sequence I thoroughly believe that that I followed these narrative structures as it was a linear narrativeand itdid show some flashbacks. However, if I was to go back and edit again I will edititso it looks like he is looking back at these events which took place in the past. Also I do believe that I followed the intended narrative development as the majority of my audienceprofiles should have understood that my protagonist character will go on a mission to redeem his past sins which they saw throughout my film opening title sequence ‘Redemption’. Due to these contributing facts stated above, I therefore thoroughly believe that my filmopening titlesequence portrayed a very evil and relentless mood which was distributed to all of my demographic audience profiles. Furthermore, as I created a thriller film opening title sequence I wanted to attract quite a broad demographic target audience however, at the same time I wanted my title sequence to relate to lower class profiles because within my title sequence I showed events which might well of happened to the lower class profiles watching (E, D, C1). Also as my film was a thriller I also tried to attract higher demographic profiles (C2, B, A) as there child might have suffered from pa rticular events displayed within my film opening title sequence. However, despite this if I was to back and re-film I would probably try and develop a new higher class profile character because by doing this I would allow particular profiles to relate to this charac ter therefore, making them more interactive and intrigued with this character and the film itself. For example, a film which allowed their target audience to relate to particular characters was a film named Taken (Morel, 2008). Subsequently, within my proposal form I also talked aboutwhat production techniques I will use to help produce my film opening title sequence. Within this aspect I stated that I would produce a substantial amount of research as well as storyboards, scripts, a risk assessment, a location reconnaissance,a call sheet and a production schedule. As opposed, to my final research, planning and final product I thoroughly believe that I followed all of these production techniques and because I did, I think I came out with a great final media product (film opening title sequence) which substantially appealed towards my intended demographi cal target audience. In difference, within my Final Major Project I also had to complete a weekly update of both a production schedule and production dairy. These particular two aspects have allowed me to keep up to date with all the tasks I have had to complete over these past months, if I got everything right and didn’t mess up because if I did some tasks could have been left behind. For example, my most complicated week which I had to stay on top of was the week of 22/02/2016 as I had a total amount of two research tasks to complete as well as four pre-production tasks. I choose to place these tasks together like this because I knew if I was able to complete all of these particular tasks I would be able to progress further ahead therefore, allowing me to start production earlier than expected. In addition, when I was planningmy production scheduleI had to consider all of my advantages and disadvantages so I could therefore, plan it carefully and leave enough time for the aspects I am not that great at. In evidence, before I planned the schedule I knew already that I was quite an effective researcher and producer therefore; I could complete both the research and pre-production aspect in a short amount of time due to my past experience in these particular aspects. In addition, in evidence I managed to complete both of these particular aspects within an eight week time gap. As opposed, as I am not incredibly talented with production and post-production I therefore; left a substantial time gap of twelve weeks so I could thoroughly complete every
  • 5. DeclanTyldesley single task in thorough detail to make sure my final media product is at a professional standard. Despite these facts, on the other hand I do still consider myself to be a fairly talented film director therefore, I only gave myself the time required which I would need in order to complete filming at my four and thorough locations. In evidence, I managed to complete all of my production phase within the space of four weeks although, I did complete filming in three weeks I was just disrupted quite heavily by a weather hazard therefore, we were unable able to film on the date I set too. However, I did deal with this particular hazard at an effective speed because as soon as I noticed the hazard I called together the crew which was needed on location so we could arrange a new filming date in the week to come. After we negotiated I then re-scheduled to film within the week 04/04/2016 on a Tuesday, as I checked the weather and it was not forecasted to rain on that particular date. Furthermore, when we were filming on this particular date we encountered a minor practical constraint and the constraint appeared when we were filming the short fight sequence which took place in the back alley. The problem was that as my character Ross would be thrown on the ground I wanted the camera to be directly below him as he fell to show the height of his fall therefore, when we came to a decision I decided to direct the camera moving away from my body as I fell, and when I hit the floor the camera would lift up and show a HAS of my body to show my characters weakness and the antagonists power. Due to this fact, I therefore believe that I and my crew overcame this particular constraint by using an effective, intense and thorough technical strategy which will turn out just as good than the original plan of my self-falling on top of my demographic audience profiles vision. Also I decided to schedule all of my filming times just before sunset (18:12) so I could obtain substantial amounts of effective and useful footage which will substantially adhere towards the thriller film genre conventions as well as appeal towards my intended demographical target audience. Additionally, as stated before I am not great within the post-production phase therefore, within this phase I left a substantial ten week time gap so I could edit every aspect of my film footage. I will edit my footage by colour correcting every scene to make it darker therefore; these scenes on the other hand will make my film opening title sequence much more intense due to the colour of the locations used within the title sequence. However, despite all of these time management aspects, I did on the other hand have multipleother units to attend to therefore, the work on my final major projectwas affected slightly as I had to focus on other units as well, and predominantly film studies (Unit 26). Subsequently, I also conducted a questionnairewhich I made on a website survey conductor named Survey Monkey. This particular survey on the other hand included a total amount of nine questions and they all focused on different aspects which were encoded within my film opening title sequence named ‘Redemption’. In addition, once I conducted all of my questions I then distributed my survey to multiple social class demographics including social class profiles; E, D, C1, C2, B and A. Additionally, below I will now discussand debate how my opinion contradicts with my audiences’ opinion whether they are negative or positive opinions. Once I have given my opinion I will then go onto criticise their feedback which they have given me to decide whether or not I think their opinion is relevant or correct. In addition, within my survey I also managed to gain both quantitative and qualitative data which I thoroughly believe has had an influence on the future projects which I will create. Also my survey ended up with a total amount of fourteen respondents, who answered all of my questions in thorough and professional detail. Please view the next page to see my survey questions and answers…
  • 6. DeclanTyldesley Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the firstquestion within questionnaire, the question which I asked towards my intended demographical target audience was; ‘Do you think I used an effective soundtrack within my film opening title sequence?’ In addition, I wanted to ask this particular question as I was generally slightly confused whether or not the two non-diegetic soundtracks used within my film opening title sequence worked effectively as I’m not sure they built intensity at a substantial speed which I expected them too. I think this because as stated above I thoroughly believe that this soundtrack made my film sound like a horror however, at the same time my footage was kind of contradicting the non-diegetic audio. Despite these facts, within my research I did state that the thriller film genre is very similar to the action and horror genres therefore, alongs ide this fact I therefore believe that my film opening title sequence soundtrack un-expectantly adhered to the thriller and horror film conventions. As opposed, on the other hand all of my fourteen survey respondents (100%) answered with ‘Yes’ therefore, telling me that people from different demographic social classes thought that my soundtrack worked effectively within my film opening title sequence. Due to the facts, stated above I thoroughly believe that the majority of these answers were fairly considerate as I do not fully believe that I selected the correct soundtrack for my film opening title sequence as it sounded more like a horror film, but the titlesequence did not visually. To conclude, I am still very happy with the responses I gained from this particular question as all of my survey respondents believed that the soundtrack was used effectively. However, if I was to go back and re-edit this specific question I will ask ‘Why?’ because by asking this I would have been able to obtain more qualitative data as well as quantitative data.
  • 7. DeclanTyldesley Additionally, as you can see above I have displayed the second question which I conducted within my questionnaire, the question which I asked towards my intended demographical target audience was; ‘Which genre do you think my film opening title sequence developed?’ below I then left a total amount of six different genres so them to select. In addition, I wanted to ask this particular question because I wasn’t sure on what genre my title sequence developed however, I did know what genre I set out to develop which was a thriller. I wasn’t sure because as stated above the two soundtracks which I selected developed more of a horror genre as it was orchestrated with instruments that are very conventional towards the horror genre as the soundtrack overall turns o ut spooky, dark and mysterious. Despite these facts and my opinion, the social class demographics un-expectantly answered with the the intended genre which I set out to create. For example, four of the survey respondents (28.57%) thought that my film opening title sequence developed a drama genre, and the other ten respondents (71.43%) thought that my film opening title sequence
  • 8. DeclanTyldesley developed the thriller filmgenre. In addition, I also completely understand why some of the demographic who filled out my su rvey answered with ‘Drama’ because the title sequence kind of portrayed this s tereotypical English drama with gangs, violence, love interests and redemption. However, this was not coincidental as I actually set out to follow the thriller film genre but also touch upon an English drama because I thought by doing this I would be able to attract a much broader demographical target audience. In addition, although I am not fully confident with these answers I am still very happy with these particular answers as none of my survey respondents did not answer with any of the followingfilm genres; Horror, Action, Biographical, or Romance. In conclusion, if I was to go back and re-edit this particular question I would also add a comment box so I could have asked my audience ‘Why?’ they thought my title sequence developed the genre they selected also therefore, by doing this I would have been able to obta in both qualitative and quantitative data. In contrast, as you can see above I have displayed the third question which I choose to conduct within my questionnaire created by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked towards my intended social classdemographics was; ‘Do you think the cinematography movements used within the title sequence adhered to genre conventions?’ and below this particular question I left three different tick boxes (Yes, No, Sometimes). Additionally, I wanted to ask this specific question because the cinematography within my title sequence was hand held therefore, making the majority of camera movements shaky and hard to decode in reference to my target audience. Also some of the cinematography was also out of focus therefore, the audience watching on the other hand would not have been able to every fine aspect in clear detail due to this fact, I should have probably become a much more reluctant direc tor on set to ensure that my camera operator films every shotin clear focus. Despite these facts, within my film opening title sequence I managed to director the camera operator into creating slow and fast cinematography movements which matched both the non -
  • 9. DeclanTyldesley diegetic audio and mise en scene displayed on screen therefore, due to this fact my demogra phic target audience would have appealed to the cinematography movements as I expected them to adhere towards the thriller film genre conventions. In contrast, a total amount of fourteen survey respondents (93.33%) answered with ‘Yes’ therefore, one survey respondent (6.67%) answered with ‘Sometimes’. In addition, due to these answers my confidence has therefore been raised on the quality and effectiveness of my final media product. Also in reference to these answers I am very happy with them all because despite all of the camera shake and lack of focus my demographic target audience still believe that the cinematography movements encoded adhere to the thriller film conventions. However, if I was to go back and re-edit an aspect of this question I would once again ask why because then I would have been able to gather both qualitative and quantitative data to improve my future pieces of work. Subsequently, as you can see above I have displayed the fourth question which I choose to conduct with my questionnaire created by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked towards my intended demographical target audience was; ‘What did you like or enjoy about my film opening title sequence?’ also as a disclaimer I created this particular question because I finally wanted to obtain some qualitativedata as I thought itwould help me substantially if I was to create any future film opening title sequences or a short film.In addition, one aspect which I thoroughly enjoyed about my film opening title sequence was the boxing sequences as within these aspects of the film opening title sequence I managed to really portray my protagonist character’s (Ross) anger and desolation therefore, within these scenes I really had to put my back into out and make myself into this angry and reluctant character. Also an aspect which helped me with these scenes was my past, because within the past I used to box therefore, I could placethose elements into my character to help alongthe way with anger, desolation and depression. Also as you can see under my question I managed to collect a total amount of fourteen different answers surrounding my film opening title sequence. As an
  • 10. DeclanTyldesley example, one of my survey respondents answered with; ‘I liked how you structured your film opening title sequence as I could tell he was in a dream and visually seeingall of these events’ with this particular answer I was fairly surprised because I thought I could have structured my title sequence much better because in my opinion it wasn’t that great. However, despite this fact as one of my survey respondents commented on this aspect I therefore, now now that my editing and structural skills aren’t that bad overall. As another example, one of my survey respondents stated; ‘I think the cinematography of the sequence worked well, created a sense of realism’also with this answer I was again fairly surprised because as stated before some of the camera shots were out of focus and very shaky however, I am happy that my title sequence created a sense of realism because that is what I was going for; to try and make it as realistic aspossibleto worry a few demographic about this happening to them. To conclude, overall I am very happy and surprised with the answers I obtained of this question as all of the were in very thorough detail allowing me to collect relevant qualitative data. Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the fifth question which I choose to conduct within my questionnaire created by Survey Monkey, the which I asked my demographic target audience was; ‘Do you think my film opening title sequence developed the narrative as well as leave elliptical elements?’ once again under this specific question I gave my a udience three options which were; yes, no, and sometimes. In my opinion, I do thoroughly believe that my film opening title sequence develo ped the narrative at an effective speed as I managed to create a plot within the first few seconds which was noticeable to all of my target audience. In evidence, within the title sequence I managed to develop a stereotypical plot of redemption hints why I selected the title ‘Redemption’, I did this by showing a tragic event of the protagonist character being ‘jumped’ in a back alley therefore, he’ll want to redeem this event. However, in terms of the narrative I believe my film opening title sequence slightly
  • 11. DeclanTyldesley followed the three act structure as the stakes and cliff-hanger weren’t incredibly effective. Although this factor may be more than true I still believe that I was able to leave elliptical elements within my film opening title sequence I didn’t develop one particular character which is Morgan portrayed by Nicole Melia, I did this by showing her briefly within the title sequence as a form of love interest and then when my protagonist character turned around to see who was there, there was nothing displayed… This on the other hand would have left elliptical elements because my audience won’t know if she is just a figure of imagination therefore, I also managed to use the enigma code, forcing my audience to ask questions. In contrast, a total amount of thirteen survey respondents (92.86%) answered with ‘Yes’ and one survey respondent (7.14%) answered with ‘Sometimes’. In addition, due to the facts stated above I did expect to receive these particular answers, but if I was to go back and get more information I would ask why because then I would have been able to find out why one of my respondents answered with ‘Sometimes’. Due to this fact, if I would have done this I would have also been able to collect qualitative data which could have helped me produce or create my future film or media projects. To conclude, if I was to go back and re-film my title sequence I would definitely consider using techniques which would have raised the stakes because by doing this I would have been able to leave my narrative development on a cliff-hanger. In addition,as you can see above I have now displayed the sixth question which was conducted within my questionnairecreated by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographical target audiencewas; ‘What would you rate my actors and actresses’ portrayal of their characters?’also asa disclaimer the protagonist character Ross was portrayed by Myself, the antagonist Joe was
  • 12. DeclanTyldesley portrayed by Adam Grundy and finally the Female lead (love interest) Morgan was portrayed by the actress Nicole Melia. Also under this particular question I left six different options were; Excellent, Good, Satisfa ctory, Okay, Bad and Terrible. In addition, I wanted to ask this particularquestion because I wanted to find out my audience’s opinion of the portrayal on all of the char acters encoded within the text. In my opinion, I believe that all of the characters within the film opening title sequence were portrayed in thorough detail due to the filmdirector and also the actors and actress. I also wanted to ask this specific question because I knew from this that I would be ableto collectquantitativedata which will help me thoroughly within my future film or media projects. In contrast, in reference to my survey respondent’s answers, two survey respondents (13.33%) answered with ‘Excellent’, eleven survey respondents (73.33%) answered with ‘Good’ and another two survey respondents answered with ‘Satisfactory’. In addition, if I was to go back and re-edit this particular question I would ask my demographic target audience why because by doing this I would have been able to obtain qualitative data which would have helped me more substantially in the future. Also from this I would have been able to develop a better understanding on whether or not to hire a particular actor or actress again as my audience thought they did an amazing job when portraying their characters set by both the film producer and film director. As stated before, if I was to go back and re-film my title sequence I would definitely include a much older character so people within higher social class profiles can relate to that character, therefore by doing this I would be able to attract a broader demographic target audience into watching this particular film opening title sequence. Subsequently, as you can see above I have now displayed the seventh question which was conducted within my questionnaire created by a website named Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my social demographic target audience was; ‘If you were to change anything about my film opening title sequence, what would it be?’ I particularly wanted to ask this question because from this question I would be able to obtain qualitative data which could help me substantially in the future, when I create more film or media projects. In my opinion, if I was to change anything about my film opening title sequence it would be the non-
  • 13. DeclanTyldesley diegetic because as stated before I still thoroughly believe that, that particular soundtrack developed the horror genre due to the instruments which it was orchestrated by. In addition, another aspect which I would change about my film opening title sequence was one of the locations and believe it or not it would be the back alley. I would change this location because we were constantly disturbed by people walking up and down therefore, we had to stop filming on multiple occasions and also the week following I went out to try and find possiblelocations which I could haveused and I walked passed a location very similar to the other, but this particular one seemed a lot more intense as there were trees without leaves and there was also a stream which could of portrayed everything drifting away for my protagonist character. Despite these facts, one of my survey respondents answered the question with ‘It needs a voiceover’ and I actually agree with this comment because within my proposal form I actually talked about encoding a voiceover into my film opening title sequence as I believed it would have made the title sequence much more intense and suspensive. Also another one of my survey respondents answered with; ‘It feels more of a short film to me, very specific three act structure has been followed. For it to be a true opening sequence for a feature film, a cliff-hanger could have been used’ once again I completely agree with this particular demographic because as stated above I also felt as if my title sequence follow a three act structureas the stakes weren’t as high so the cliff-hanger which I intended to use wasn’t as effective. Due to this fact, if I was to go back to my title sequence I will more than likely make the stakes much higher so my title sequence could have been used effectively within a full feature film.To conclude,I thoroughly believe that this qualitative data is going to help me substantially in the future with my film and media projects for clients. Furthermore, as you can see above I have displayed the eighth question conducted within this particular questionnaire created by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographic target audience was ‘Do you think my film title (Redemption) adhered towards the narrative of the film?’ I wanted to predominantly ask this particular question to gain quite a substantial amount of quantitative data as I knew that these particular answers will prominently help with my screenwriting and treatment in the future because as a screenwriter it is there job to select the correct title for the narrative of the film. For example, the film The Revenant (G. Iñárritu, 2015) the word ‘revenant’ means a person who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead and within the film the character Hugh Glass is known to be dead. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that my film title adhered towards the narrative
  • 14. DeclanTyldesley of the film because the whole plot of the film is about someone trying to redeem their past sins when they were ‘jumped’ is a dark and desolated back alley. Also my protagonist character only feels the way to get his life back on track is by redeeming himself in the most brutal way possible towards the antagonist as he once did the same to him. In addition, my caption also developed fr om the plot as it was’ ‘No one ever wins the fight between life and death’ because the protagonist soon realizes that he doesn’t have to go down this road but will it be too late… In contrast, in reference to my answers a total amount of thirteen survey respondents answered with ‘Yes’ and one survey respondent answered with ‘No’. Due to these answers I therefore believe that the majority of my demographic target audience realized the title of my film as it adhered towards the narrative. However, as one survey respondent answered with ‘No’ I wish I asked why because then I would have also been able to obtain qualitative data as well as quantitative data. To conclude, also as stated before I also believe that these answers have given me ingenuity to continue screenwriting as this particular film title (Redemption) adhered towards the narrative of my film. Additionally, as you can see above I have managed to display the final question which was conducted within this questionnaire created by Survey Monkey, the question which I asked my demographic target audience was; ‘What rating would you give my film opening title sequence out of ten? (1 being the worst and 10 being the best)’ I wanted to ask this particular question as I once again wanted to obtain quite a substantial amount of statistical quantitative date which will help me create better pieces of work which adhere to film conventions in the future. In my opinion, I thoroughly believe that overall I did quite a good job with this particular film opening title sequence, I think this because I believe that I directed this opening sequence effectively so that it would adhere to the thriller film genre conventions and appeal to my social demographic target audience at a substantial speed. I also believe that my actors and actress portrayed the characters I set them to effectively as the majority of my demographic target
  • 15. DeclanTyldesley audience thought all of their performances were good and some thought that they were excellent therefore, within my future pieces I will definitely consider hiringthese people again to play similar roles or extremely different ones as they have my trust and I know their skills within this particular department. In addition, with all of these contributing factors alongside me I can now thoroughly say that this particular film opening title sequence in my opinion was much better than my first one which was titled ‘The Avenger’ as this filmopeningtitle sequence was ableto build intensity ata much more substantial rate. In contrast, as you can see above the majority of my demographic audience profiles rated my film with an eight out of ten, from this question I also received two nines, two sevens and one ten out of ten rating. Due to these facts, from these answers I thoroughly believe tha t my future projects will be substantially better as I now know what to include within my title sequence so I can both appeal to a much broader demographic target audience and adhere to particular film genre conventions dependent on which title sequence or film I decide to produce and distributenext. In conclusion,in a ratingoutof ten I can confidently say that I will rate my film opening title sequence an eight out of ten due to the vast majority of people which said this and also with the content that was included. Finally, for the lastpartof my final major projectevaluation I amgoingto talk about, how I would respond to this particular project brief if I was to execute this again. In addition, if I was to try executing this form of brief again I will more than definitely select a different plot device to follow for my thriller film opening title sequence. For example, if I was to select a different plot device I would probably set my title sequence in no more than two locations because with four locations I found it really difficult to schedule all of the filming dates therefore, with two locations I will be able to work much more efficiently. If I had to select a location right now I would probably choose a dark setting, set in a car park where some form of deal is happening therefore, if I was to do this I could icon multiple different aspects with conventional CUS’s which are relevant towards the storyline. Due to this fact, I will also be able to leave my title sequence on a much more substantial cliff-hanger as well as leave elliptical elements (enigma code) forcingmy audienceto ask questions. In contrast,if I was to execute this project brief again I would more than likely use a few different editing techniques as I believe the ones used within this particular technique were a bit rushed as out final major project deadline was moved to an earlier date therefore, if I was to execute this again I would take a bit more time when editing my title sequence because I believe if I would have taken my time it would have been much more effective and intense. For example, if I would have taken another week editing my film opening title sequence I believe I would have been able to make all of my shots a lot smoother throughout my title sequence and I also might have been able to apply a little more double exposure to the majority of my shots when it was needed. In addition, I would also be more time efficient with the two different time management aspects (production scheduleand dairy) which we had to fill out weekly, I think this because I believe I had taken too much time focusing on these two aspects, too much in so many occasions I forgot to fill out both the production schedule and production diary. Furthermore, if I was to execute this particular brief again I would more than likely apply a few more planning methods for example, within one of my production weeks I could have gone out and execute a few test shots and sequences because by doing this I would have been able to be a much more efficient film director as all of my crew would have known what they are meant to do beforehand therefore, the only aspect which I will have to deal with is directing the actors and actress where to go, where to stand, what to say etc. In addition, as I did not do this it made it very difficult for me to progress by film directing skills as it was very stressful on set as the majority of the time I was the only one who knew what was taking place on the visual screen therefore, this is a crucial aspect which I would need to execute if I was to complete this form of project brief again. To conclude this aspect of my final major project evaluation, I don’t thoroughly believe that I will change the majority of aspects as I thought I worked effectively within the research, pre-production, production and post-production phases therefore, there wasn’t that much to change as the majority of aspects were completed at a professional (industry) standard. In addition, just before I leave this paragraph if I had the funding for my filmopening title sequence I would definitely try use multiplicities of shots so I can make effective and conventional quick cuts. In my overall conclusion, to complete my Final Major Project, I thoroughly believe that this project brief overall, has given me a more thorough knowledge in multiple different aspects of media such as; how clients operate with freelancers and production companies’,and how filmproducers and directors use particular technical and research methods which can ultimately make their final media product substantially better. Due to all of these contributing factors and this project brief I have also been heavily boosted into going university and achievingthe highestgrade I possibly can, this project brief on the other hand has also given me the ingenuity to go off and create, produce or screen write particular films which can truly have an influence on other people’s lives and if I accomplish to make a film which ultimately changes someone’s life despite their demographic status I will be more than happy to know that I have made a particular someone or group realise something true and meaningful. In conclusion, I also believe that this project brief would have had the same influence on all of my colleagues to go off and do something great by portraying a strong, powerful, and true semiotic message.
