2. To create my documentary I used Adobe premier pro. Premier Pro is a software I have used in the past and I am familiar with, that is why I chose to
use this software. Premier Pro also offers a wide variety of editing tools which were useful to me to create the best product I possibly could.
In the introduction to my documentary I used stock footage I got for free from the internet. I used this because I wanted a vast introduction with a
drone going through a city, unfortunately, this was beyond the means I have available so stock footage was the best option. The stock footage also
helped bring the documentary together and start off the documentary with a strong theme. I thought the idea of a drone going through a busy city
complimented the theme of the documentary and captures that technology brings us all together.
I decided my documentary should be in the expositional format (voice of god style) which contains interviews and voiceovers over stock footage. I
decided to do this as it was the most popular format among the existing products I looked at during the research I conducted. Also, according to
my target audience research I concluded that the type of documentary people enjoyed the most was the expositional style. It also seems to be the
most popular among the people who watch documentaries
Looking at existing products really helped me identify codes and conventions of documentaries so I can follow them the best I can to produce the
best possible product. The codes and conventions I identified during my research include
- Voice of god style narration (narration over stock footage) which I used in my documentary in the introduction and to introduce
interviewees.
- Fade in and fade out effects on audio, video and text. I used this as It eases out content slowly instead of them disappearing suddenly, which I
found makes viewing more pleasurable for the audience
- Subtitles during narration. I used this for scenes where there was just audio and nothing else. I experimented with adding stock footage to these
scenes instead of a black background and subtitles, but I found that a simple single colour background and some text gave the viewer a rest
and helps them concentrate more on what is going on in the scene.
- Credits scenes. I added a credits scene at the end of my documentary to credit those who contributed. This is a convention I found the vast
majority of documentaries, most of them being black backgrounds with music and text. I did this because it is a refreshing and effective way to
end a documentary.
3. The font I chose for my documentary was an informed decision based on the theme of technology, which is the focal point of my
documentary. The font is a futuristic, sci-fi type of text you may find in a movie or television show set in the future. The font is called OCR A
Extended
I think the font goes very well with the documentary and compliments the theme and subject matter perfectly.
Feedback from previous projects were very helpful in creating this project. It gave me guidance on what to do and what to avoid when creating a
video project such as.
- Make sure shots are centred, stable and in focus. I tried my best to do this while using DSLRs to film interview scenes. I adjusted the focus to
make the shot clear and made sure the lighting settings. ISO which is how sensitive the camera is to light, I adjusted until the image was at the
perfect light. Aperture which is how wide the shutter is on the lens, I adjusted the aperture until the right amount of light was coming through
and focused the camera as necessary.
- I learned when creating my previous projects that creating digital backups of work is very important as some clips from the last project. While
making this project, I made a back up of the work I had done every time I worked on editing, so if the original corrupted, I would still have the
work I completed that day and not have to do any of it a second time.
4. In my opinion I have produced a piece of work that follows the brief well and accommodates client requirements to the best of my ability. I think
my product has achieved it’s purpose, to show the way technology has influenced the culture of young people.
The reason I chose to focus my research on the way young people are effected by technology in their education as I was very interested in finding
what education would have been like without the conveniences of modern technology. My goal with the project was to bring light to how life
would be different for students if they suddenly had to go without modern day technology in their studies.
What I think I did well.
- Following the brief. I believe I did a good job at following the brief inline with the client requirements. I believe if this was a real commissioned
project, It would be well received by the network. This is because I tried my best to create the project inline with what was asked in the brief
- Editing. I believe the editing work I demonstrated in my project shows confidence and competence and I think it shows how my skills using
video editing software has developed over the course of the unit.
- Camera skills. The camera skills I also presented in this project also show the way my skills using hardware and video equipment has developed
over the course of the unit. I think I demonstrate a degree of confidence and competence with the way I use photography equipment
compared to the begging of the year.
What I could have improved on
- Formatting and organisational skills. I did manage to create a folder containing the back ups for my video clips. However, I wish I did this better
and more intricate. For example, making new folders inside the folders to separate copy files from non copy files.
