Agonism in the Academy
Rene Siluano

Prof. Kinkade
March 14th, 2013 Education, a most powerful tool of use in today s world and one that we probably
take for granted, could possible be at risk as far as how knowledgeable we are becoming on the
material at hand. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and because of agonism in academics, students
now might not be getting the full potential out of their mind simply because of the way they/we are
being taught. Deborah Tannen, a professor at Georgetown University, in the article Agonism in the
Academy: Surviving the Argument Culture (2000) argues that discussion rather than debate is a more
proficient way of teaching our students, likewise, collaborating ideas instead of tearing down material

Although very logical, this whole hearted sentimental quote is meant to appeal emotionally to readers
by giving the feeling that we need to save our academic humanity, and not let it go to waste. In
essence, Tannen is promoting cooperative discussion, where students and educators can build off each
others ideas, and form new perspectives. So what should, or could, be the immediate solution to this
issue? While discussing agonistic ideology, Tannen states, Our agonist ideology seems so deeply
embedded in academe that one might wonder what alternatives we have (219). Tannen may be saying
here that there are no immediate solutions at this point in time, most likely because we have been
engaging in this agonistic learning style for quite some time. On the other hand, Tannen goes on to
state later in the article, while discussing another reading group experience, Refocusing our attention. .
.is the greatest gain in store if we can move beyond critique in it s narrow sense (220). Now the
solution is blunt, we as students and educators need to step back from critique and step forward to
open discussion. Tannen does an excellent job in explaining and exemplifying throughout her article
how agonism has a negative affect

Cultural Imperialism In Chile
Imperialism is commonly defined as the policy of extending the rule or authority empire or nation
over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. Therefore, one can

within another. Mass media incredibly influences how countries are seen by other parts of the world. It

revolutionary transformation. Chile attempted to break out of its economic and cultural reliance on the
United States, and part of this process included critiquing the propaganda and mass media exported by
the United States to the third world.

Are Organized Activities Or Creative Play More Important...
Are organized activities or creative play more important to a child s development? Some people would
argue that creative play is a very important thing to include in a child s day. Others say that creative
play is not critical to a child s development but organized activities are. Many people believe that
creative play is no longer as essential as it was once believed to be and that organized activities
actaully provide more benefits. They say that since being involved in an organized activity requires
commitment, teamwork, and hard work it can help children become responsible adults. They also
beleive that organized activities help parents become more involved in their children s lives. I believe

How Children Acquire Aggressive Reponses
Childhood Aggression
Many studies found frustration, various drugs, beliefs, traits and provocation are some influences that
effect childhood aggression. Archer (1991) concentrated on biological influence such as
norepinephrine, serotonin, cortisol and testosterone. This brief will focus on several theories that
elevate aggression and can be positively modified by family and environment. Aggression was defined
by Volavka Citrome (1999) as, a physical behaviour that causes psychological or physical harm or
damage to objects or living beings. Aggression is often divided into two types one being instrumental,
or proactive aggression and is pre meditated and frequently goal directed resulting from a lack of
emotional sensitivity. In contrast, reactive aggression stems from excess emotional sensitivity and is
developed through negative experiences and emotions including anger and anxiety (Tremblay et al.,
2005).
According to (Bandura, 1983, 2001; Mischel, 1973; Mischel Shoda, 1995), children acquire
aggressive responses; either by observing others or by direct experience and this is similar to how they
learn any form of social behaviour. Bandura (1983) examined this social learning theory and explained
how the observational learning processes and modelling the behaviour of others can escalate the
acquisition of aggressive behaviours by children in certain situations. This theory is closely associated
to Huesmann s (1986, 1998) script theory. Huesmann (1986, 1998)

The Hitchhiker By Lucille Fletcher Analysis
When giving your child their first car, a parent alway s makes sure to tell their child to never pick up a
stranger. The Hitchhiker by Lucille Fletcher, is a classic story about a man named Ronald Adams. He
sets out on a road trip from Brooklyn to California. Through his journey he seems to keep
encountering a strange male hitchhiker on the side of the road. But strangely, Ronald is the only
person who can see this hitchhiker. To fill his fear of the hitchhiker he picks up a young female
hitchhiker to tag along with. Immediately she realizes that Ronald is insane, the young female quickly
removes herself from the dangerous situation and continues along her way. After the hitchhiker flees,

The Disability Rights Movement
People with mobility impairments have not created oppositional consciousness for their disability, but
have been grouped together with individuals who are deaf or blind in developing an overall disability
consciousness (Mansbridge Morris, 2001). Crucial to disability consciousness is the belief that all
people with disabilities are oppressed in the sense of having been unjustly deprived of power, status,
and opportunities...Like members of other oppressed groups who have developed an oppositional
consciousness, people with a disability consciousness contend that their subordinate position is not
due to personal failure (Mansbridge Morris, 2001, p. 84). People with disabilities believe they have

Television stations, such as the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) that was created in 1967, along
with other grassroots cable television movements in the 1970s, began with the mission to provide
continuous coverage of political issues for citizen awareness and education (Sirianni Friedland, 2001).
By the 1980s, commercial television was a dominant medium of communication, and local news was
its cash cow (Sirianni Friedland, 2001, p. 189). With continued exposure to issues in society for the
American public, individuals in the disability rights movement have another source of media to
influence and promote their campaign. One important issue that had occurred in Seversville, North
Carolina, described the city with years of neglect and public life that was in serious decline. In January
1995, community leaders started a campaign, Taking Back Our Neighborhoods, and televised the
kickoff and continuing events on public television (Sirianni Friedland, 2001). Reporters for this
particular campaign listened and responded to the concerns of problems in the community from those
citizens who lived there. Different groups within the city, different churches and other civic
connections, worked together and grew as agents of change within the political structure of the city.
Crime was reduced, and issues were heard that brought a positive

An alternative approach of affinity chromatography with...
An alternative approach of affinity chromatography with extremely significant results is dye ligand
affinity chromatography. In this type of affinity chromatography, dyes compose the group of ligands
than are employed in the technique (Hage et al., 2012).
The initial motivation for scientists to investigate more about dye ligand affinity chromatography was
given after the interactions that took place between Blue Dextran, a Cibaron Blue and dextran
conjugate, which is used as a void marker in size exclusion chromatography, and particular kinases.
Until then, only purification of various proteins by size exclusion chromatography with Blue Dextran,

Sulfonic acid groups are responsible for molecules in order to be soluble enough in aqueous media.
Another crucial characteristic is the negative charge of these groups at all pH values. Carboxyl, amino,
chloride, or metal complexing groups can be part of these dyes, but in most of them nitrogen both in
and outside on aromatic ring can be included (Denizli and PiÅŸkin, 2001).
The most popular dyes used for the purification of proteins are triazinyl based reactive dyes. The
synthesis procedure is mainly based on Cyanuric chloride or (1,3,5 trichloro sym triazine). In
particular, the fact that electronegative atoms are present is the reason for the three carbon atoms to be
characterized as extremely positive, and as a result they are very sensitive to nucleophilic attacks. The
attachment of chromophore molecules to this is extremely simple and so dichlorotriazinyl dyes can be
also formed (Denizli and PiÅŸkin, 2001).
A characteristic example of this category of dyes is the Procion MX series (from Imperial Chemical
Industries). These series can also react later with aniline, sulfanilates or other nucleophilic substituents
in order to produce monochlorotriazinyl dyes like for example Cibacron (from Ciba Geigy) or Procion
H (from ICI).The exact position of the sulfonate group on the aniline ring is the main characteristic
that helps scientists to distinguish the two series, as in Procion H series it

American Pioneers Vs Pioneers
I recognise your claim in your speech and I have to say I disagree with you. I solemnly believe that the
statue should be put up because the pioneers had every right to come here. They were in search for a
better living because in Holland they were not able to raise children nor make a living. It is very easy
today to compare it too refugees that come to America to better their lives also. Today we have people
are coming to America to better their lives, just like the pioneers did. This statue shows the American

Companionship Quotes In Frankenstein
According to the Oxford University Press, companionship is defined as, friendship, fellowship,
closeness, togetherness, amity, intimacy, rapport, camaraderie, brotherhood, sisterhood; company,
society, social contact. All these words form the idea of two people spending their time and life
together. The idea of companionship is a necessity in life, because all different types of people and
creations rely on the company of others. Without the company of others, people no longer act as they
should in society. They no longer learn new things and they become outcasts. In the book,
Frankenstein, the creature lives his life without a companion and the outcome is tragic.

The Theory And The Psychoanalytic Theory
Although used predominantly to explain the varying characteristics each individual possesses,
personality is also a term often coined to define and explain the reasons behind an individual s
motivations and reactions to certain events, entities and decisions. Defined by Larson Buss, 2005,
personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that are organised
and relatively enduring, and that influence his or her interaction with, and adaptions to, the
intrapsychic, physical and social environments. As personality encompasses such a wide array of
concepts, there are many competitive theories battling to explain these dynamic ideas. Of these
theories, is the unorthodox Psychoanalytic theory, developed by ... Show more content on

In contrast, the humanistic approach emphasised the conscious awareness of needs, choices and
personal responsibilities of the individual (Lahey, 2009). They believed that the personal worth of the
particular individual, the centrality of human values, and the creative and active nature of human
beings was what defined the person (McLeod, 2007). Basically, the humanistic approach, according to
Abraham Maslow, was that humans are born good and that human nature is compassionate and
positive (Larsen Buss, 2012).
Both the psychoanalytic and humanistic theories differ from one another in multiple ways. One of the
most prominent differences is their view on human nature. As mentioned above, Freud and his
psychoanalytic concept, viewed humans as inherently bad. The id, he defined, operated solely on the
pleasure principle, craving immediate gratification without consideration about moral values and the
harm it could cause (McLeod, 2008). He also believed that the ego and the superego was the minds
way of controlling the id ((Lahey, 2009; Larsen Buss, 2012; McLeod, 2008).
In contrast, humanistic psychologists viewed human nature as fundamentally good. Maslow had a
positive view on men, believing that each had the ability to grow and mature into proper beings, and
make use of their full potential (Boeree, 2000 Larsen Buss, 2012). The main emphasis of the
humanistic approach, was that an individual has free will and this plays an important role in shaping

A Report On A Government
A government should always be open to criticism, be held accountable for their actions, and be honest
when notifying the public of any events. This creates government transparency and allows its citizens
to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. In order to create this transparency in today s
society, a technical system must be set in place. This technical system needs to contain government
documents which are easily accessible to the public. But, not all documents should be housed in this
accessible database. Some government knowledge should be kept secret and inaccessible, because it
could fall into the wrong hands. Documents containing economic information, such as budgets and
spending should be readily available on a database for the public to access. Without a transparent
government, citizens can become unruly and no longer trust their government due to the high volume
of secrets or hidden documentation.
Solution I My first solution to this issue is to open a cloud database which would house any
documents containing government budgets, spending, and/or salaries. This database would be
accessible to everyone with the means to access a cloud database. The database could be accessed via
an application downloaded onto a computer or mobile phone. There is already an app with these
specifications available for Montgomery County in Maryland. The app was built by Socrata, a Seattle
based cloud software company, in order to encourage citizen engagement within their

Human Suffering, By The Marxian Analysis Of Capitalism And...
Introduction In this essay, I will examine the concept of human suffering, namely inequality,
alienation, oppression and violence as presented in the Marxian analysis of capitalism and class
struggles. In examining these concepts I argue that the hierarchy of difference created by the binary
model of inferior and superior class positions naturalises this human suffering. In many ways, human
suffering is the negation of the other in order to determine oneself. In order to explore the key
concepts that effectuate to human suffering, I will first talk about the concepts of inequality,
alienation, oppression and violence in the context of case studies drawn from a Marxian analysis
against capitalism. After examining the terms, I will critique how power was concentrated in a top
down hierarchy within Marxist ideology.
Human Suffering The struggle to live against deterministic ideologies constitutes many forms of
human suffering. Human suffering could be largely due to the practice of negation of all others who
do not belong to a dominant or all powerful group. Human suffering can take many forms, but in the
context of capitalism and class struggles, Marx s conceptualisation of human suffering is in the form
of inequality between classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, or the capitalist and the working
class. Because of the inequality between these two groups, capitalists would usually hold the power
over the proletariat, the workers and the labourers who engage in

something in order to feel alienated from it (World Famous Quotes). Rice s statement reveals that
humans are a part of certain cultures or societies yet feel as if they are not. On occasions, individuals
choose to be alienated from groups, but others are alienated against their will. Cultures and societies
both can give individuals a way to connect with one another but also can be a way of segregating
others. Society s stereotypes create a notion that everyone in a certain group should be the same
otherwise they are an outcast. Alienation can be beneficial to one s growth but also shows how the

Essay On Energy Recovery
Energy Recovery
Anaerobic treatment gives a high potential of energy recovery from wastewater in form of biogas. The
effluent can also serve industrial heating and cooling purposes. Wastewater has a huge potential of
electricity generation. Technologies exist for on site energy recovery through sludge/biosolids
treatment processes integrated in wastewater treatment plants, allowing for transition from major
energy consumers to energy producers.
Strict standards for discharge often require energy intensive advanced treatment technologies. As a
result, the number of plants using advanced treatment has increased [17]. Rising energy costs and
concerns about greenhouse gas generation present a major incentive for tracking energy usage of ...

Biogas is a mixture essentially comprising mostly methane (CH4, around 55 75%) but also contains
carbon dioxide (CO2, around 25 30%), varying quantities of water (H2O) and hydrogen sulphide
(H2S). The thermal energy available from the methane contained in biogas is about 6 to 8 kWh/m3.
This corresponds to half a litre of diesel oil and 5.5 kg of firewood [21].
4.2 Microbial Fuel Cell Technology
Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process, consuming about 1,900 kJ/m3 of treated
wastewater [22]. Wastewater contains almost 9 times more energy than the energy used to treat an
equivalent volume, thus creating the need to harness this energy through the use of a Microbial Fuel
Cell (MFC) [22]. Microbial Fuel cell (MFC) is a device designed for electricity generation in the
process of wastewater treatment [23]. Microbial fuel cell is a new form of renewable energy, which
uses bacteria in wastewater to convert organic matter into electricity, while simultaneously treating the
wastewater. MFCs can provide an answer to several of the problems which traditional wastewater
treatment faces. They enable the recovery of energy out of the wastewater, while limiting both the
energy input and the excess sludge production [24].
5.0 Nutrient recovery
Wastewater nutrients are resources that can generate revenues for treatment plants while helping meet
environmental regulations. Wastewater and municipal sludge, can be a reliable source of nutrients, in

Country Club golf course. The crash left him unconscious in a burning plane with a punctured lung,
fractured leg and a bunch of cuts and burns. A Marine sergeant pulled Hughes out of the plane, and he
was rushed to Beverly Hills Emergency Hospital. He was given a fifty percent chance to live. As he
suffered with serious head and back injuries, he became addicted to painkillers. Hughes was
constantly self injecting morphine into his body. As the years passed he became irrationally paranoid.
He surrounded himself with aides that he trusted; a group of seven Mormons which never left Howard
s side, and insisted that any item handed to him be covered by a Kleenex. Hughes had many projects
he worked on such as the Spruce Goose. It was the biggest plane ever built. With a wing span as long
as a football field and room for six hundred plus passengers it was very famous. The Spruce Goose
had eight seventeen foot propellers and the interior looked like the set of the old Time Tunnel, TV
series. On November 2, 1945 in San Pedro Harbor the Spruce Goose flew but for only seventy yards.
Hughes also built the world s first communications satellite. His dream was that anyone on or about
the earth could communicate with someone else. Arthur C. Clark first had this idea but never

Essay on The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien
The Things They Carried, written by Tim O Brein, is a story told through the eyes of members of a
United States Army troop trudging their way through the Vietnamese country side and jungles during
the Vietnam War. Each man has a specific job and so they carry specific belongings that they need to
fulfill that job as well as a few mementos from home. These men also carry unseen baggage that is all
too real to these men, their families and responsibilities back home preying on their minds, the horrors
of war, and the stress of the importance of fulfilling their duties to keep then men around them alive.
The soldiers carried the individual items necessary for individual jobs and sentimental mementoes
from home, such as Rat Kiley, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are the reasons that the men could not sleep at night. Not the foreign sounds of animals and
country they did not know, it was the memories that kept the men alert. By and large they carried these
things inside, maintaining a mask of composure (Belasco 1469). The physical aspects of the things
they carried, the men could get a respite by setting them down for a moment, but the mental things
could not be dropped so easily, in fact most men always carried this weight, thus making the mental
weight upon their shoulders more tedious to deal with. The biggest mental struggles the men dealt
with were those of the memories flashing across their minds of fellow comrades dying, the emotional
weight of men not knowing if the man they are standing next to may die that day, memories from
home and the war, both shameful and joyous, the turmoil of day to day life in an alien land, and
embarrassment. O Brien expands on this by saying, They carried the soldier s greatest fear, which was
a fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. It was what had
brought them to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid
the blush of dishonor (Belasco 1469). The stress of these things, were wearisome to carry, but they had
carry them to live to fight another day. The

Comparing Suetonius And Tacitus
The accounts of emperor Tiberius reign by both Suetonius and Tacitus have qualities that serve to
show how differing authors viewed Tiberius in various flattering and unappealing ways by their
personal reasoning and desire to preserve truth as much as possible in scope of their respective
intentions to provide scholars with treatments of him that give a through picture of his traits, strengths
and weaknesses. Overall, by examining both accounts of Tiberius reign, readers are able to form
independent judgement of Tiberius and if each description is biased beyond any semblance of
objectively. Overall Suetonius and Tacitus leaves books that differ in style and accuracy but both do
indeed want the residing public to understand the true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately the tone of each account is tremendously different; Suetonius is more concerned with its
relation to history while Tacitus is intertwining his own spin on it by blaming the emperor for his
unreliability and foolishness.
Suetonius offers a wider treatment of Tiberius than Tacitus, at first him presenting him in a much
lesser hostile light and then increasing his disapproval as his account unfolds. Tacitus however seems
to be disapproving throughout with short sports of approval filtering in when Tiberius has acted in a
way beneficial to the Roman public. However, Suetonius is very similar in some ways especially his
great disapproval of Tiberius displaying him as a sexual nymphomaniac (Suetonius, Lives of the
Caesars 43.1). In Tacitus, the engaged nobility comes through with an outpouring of condemnation
against Tiberius for his atrocities as Emperor and angrily depicts a man who can role play depending
on whom he is addressing and whom is so disliked by the public that they hurl insults at him near
death.

Essay Battle of Gettysburg
Battle of Gettysburg
This most famous and most important Civil War Battle occurred over three hot summer days, July 1 to
July 3, 1863, around the small market town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It began as a skirmish but by
its end involved 160,000 Americans.
Before the battle, major cities in the North such as Philadelphia, Baltimore and even Washington were
under threat of attack from General Robert E. Lee s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia which had
crossed the Potomac River and marched into Pennsylvania.
The Union Army of the Potomac under its very new and untried commander, General George G.
Meade, marched to intercept Lee.
On Tuesday morning, June 30, an infantry brigade of Confederate soldiers searching for shoes ...

Cavalry leader Jeb Stuart had gone off with his troops to harass the Federals. Stuart s expedition
would turn out to be for the most part a wild goose chase which left Lee at a disadvantage until he
returned.
Lee decided to attack the Union Army s defensive position at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge
which he thought was less well defended.
About 10 a.m. the next morning, Thursday, July 2, Gen. Longstreet was ordered by Lee to attack. But
Longstreet was quite slow in getting his troops into position and didn t attack until 4 p.m. that
afternoon thus giving the Union Army even more time to strengthen its position.
When Longstreet attacked, some of the most bitter fighting of the Civil War erupted at places now part
of American military folklore such as Little Round Top, Devil s Den, the Wheat Field and the Peach
Orchard. Longstreet took the Peach Orchard but was driven back at Little Round Top.
About 6:30 p.m. Gen. Ewell attacked the Union line from the north and east at Cemetery Hill and
Culp s Hill. The attack lasted into darkness but was finally unsuccessful at Cemetery Hill, although
the Rebels seized some trenches on Culp s Hill.
By about 10:30 p.m., the day s fighting came to an end. The Federals had lost some ground during the
Rebel onslaught but still held the strong defensive position along Cemetery Ridge.
Both sides regrouped and counted their causalities while the

Forrest Gump Dynamic Character
Character A person, animal, or creature that takes part in the action of a story, play, or other literary
work. Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks is one of my favorite all time characters. I chose for stomp
as my choice to illustrate the elements of character because he is the main character that takes part in
the whole action of the story. Forrest Gump is child like, and innocent. His heart warming outlook on
life is inspiring. Forest Gumps naïve way of thinking enables him to have no prejudice against
minorities, foreigners or different religious beliefs.
Protagonist This is the main character we can relate to, and is usually, but not always, the good guy.

A good example of a static characters in Forrest Gump is his mother. Mrs. Gump is consistently the
same throughout the movie. Mrs. Gump is a good hearted southern single woman. Mrs. Gump treats
for Forrest like a normal child and expects others to do so as well. Mrs. Gump unwaveringly loves
Forrest despite his mental and physical handicaps.
Dynamic changes as a result of the story s events. Severus Snape is a good example as a dynamic
character in Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling s he is always changing and a surprise of being good and/or
evil. I chose Snape as a perfect example to illustrate a dynamic character because throughout the book
he changes a lot. He is hard and horrible professor and then he becomes the good guy that protects and
saves Harry Potter.
Stereotypical (stock) a character that falls into a stereotype. For example, the clueless blonde The
Breakfast Club movie shows the dumb jock, the druggie or burn out but at the end it shows the
stereotypical character can also have some twists and shows why they are like the way they are as
characters. The stereotypical character I chose that best illustrates a stock or stereo typical character is

The Theory Of Progress And Its Components
The optimism of some human s nature has brought forth interpretations such as the progress theory to
reflect it. Looking back on the world and prescribing that it was a primitive existence compared to the
present is an interpretation that has held some ground until the face of adversary reveals itself. The
progress of human history near the common day is not a straight linear progression that hits abstract
checkmarks of movements and revolutions, but it is a more complex study. Historians such as J.B.
Bury, Herbert Butterfield, and John Lukacs talk about the theory of progress and how it manifests in
historical writings. The scientists, C.P Snow wrote in the Two Cultures a framework of mind of the
significant revolutions in science. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ability to look at the past and its developments is invaluable to see the developments play out and
see how progress is a limited ideal. The past might be crystallized now in textbooks, but the people of
the past did not have the future at their grasp to evaluate. The abridgement between time periods and
movements are not times that we can consider as straight forward progressions, but times in their own
right and merit. The luxury of looking back into the past is a convenience that allows the historian,
student, or teacher to read into the times, but that convenience also draws lines where causes and
effects were not as simple. The tendency to patch the new research into the old story even when the
research in detail has altered the bearings of the whole subject is an effect of the convenience and
discredits the past with comparisons to the present. The past is also held to a standard that keeps the
present wondering on how this preceded it. When studying the past it is desirable to see one s time as
superior and one that is pioneering the mantle of progress, but this is not so when the direction that
follows is not a desired one such as Snow s description of the sciences where if the scientists have the
future in their bones, then the traditional culture responds by wishing the future did not exist. This is
common since We live forward, but we can only think backward , but

as people who elegantly go through life sipping campaign, going to balls and having all of their needs

naive typical rich respected townsman. My response to how these characters were portrayed was that
they were done very well. They were done in a way that you could understand everything going on,
even with the large amounts of complex singing.
The acting in this Operetta was very well done. The actors spoke and carried themselves exactly like
the character they were playing would have acted. They all spoke with different voices, accents and
tonal patterns unique to their part. Many of the actors had to play different mini roles when they were

Analysis Of Cushing s Syndrome ( Cs )
Cushing s syndrome (CS) is a condition whereby there is an excessive amount of glucocorticoids
circulating in the human body1. There are two categories of CS, the most common type is exogenous,
which is caused by supraphysiological amounts of glucocorticoids from an external source1. The
second type is the endogenous CS and is caused by the endogenous over secretion of glucocorticoids
by the adrenal glands2. The incidence of any form of CS has been reported to affect between 2 3
million population per year3, with a higher incidence in women over men4 5. CS is uncommon in
children but if it does occur, it commonly presents with growth retardation and weight gain after
puberty5. When an individual suffers from CS it causes a continuous ... Show more content on

As shown in Table 1 Cushing s Disease is the most common cause of CS. This disease most
commonly develops due to an ACTH producing pituitary tumor9. The increase in ACTH production
leads to an increased ACTH concentration in plasma causing bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia and
hypersecretion of cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Due to the feedback mechanism as shown in Figure
1 a chronic increase in cortisol leads to the suppression of CRH and ACTH secretion.
The second major corticotropin dependent cause of CS is called ectopic corticotropin syndrome (Table
I) and is caused most commonly from a pulmonary carcinoma however can be from other tumors and
carcinomas such as bronchial carcinoma. These carcinomas produce ACTH in an abnormal place, this
increase in plasma ACTH causes bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia and increased cortisol secretion,
and once again high cortisol levels lead to a suppression of the HPA feedback loop9. This cause
creates a more rapid and severe increased cortisol state.
The third and final corticotropin dependent cause is similar to the above mechanism however is
simply due to an increased secretion of CRH instead, this can be from any nonhypothalamic tumor
secreting CRH. This mechanism therefor stimulates hyperplasia of

Investigating The Conversion Of Hydrogen Peroxide

Lab Two: Enzyme Catalysis
Introduction
This lab will observe the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen gas by the enzyme
catalysis. The amount of oxygen generated will be measured and used to calculate the rate of the
enzyme catalyzed reaction. Enzymes are proteins produced by living cells. Enzymes act as
biochemical catalysts during a reaction, meaning they lower the activation energy needed for that
reaction to occur. Through enzyme activity, cells gain the ability to carry out complex chemical
activities at relatively low temperatures. The substance in an enzyme catalyzed reaction that is to be
acted upon is the substrate, which comes together reversibly to the active site of the enzyme. The
active site is the portion of the enzyme that interacts with the substrate. One result of this temporary
union between the substrate and the active site is a reduction in the activation energy required to start
the reaction of the substrate molecule so that products are formed. In a mathematical equation of the
substrate (S) binding with the activation site (E) and forming products (P) is:
E + S ES E + P Several ways enzyme action may be affected include:
1) Salt Concentration For example, if salt concentration is close to zero, the charged amino acid side
chains of the enzyme molecules will attract each other. The enzyme will then denature and form an
inactive precipitate. If salt concentration is extremely

What Is Hans Denck Concerning True Love
Concerning True Love This work is written by Hans Denck in 1527 and it serves like a mystical, yet
systematic description of certain Anabaptist beliefs. Firstly, he speaks of how love, true love, is a
spiritual gift with God being the perfect example of love in Jesus Christ. No one, Denck says, can love
or even know love without first accepting Christ into their hearts. Denck also utilizes his theory of
love to explain what is meant by the new law or new covenant in Scripture. While followers of God
were once chained by the Law, Christians are now liberated from the Law because of Christ s death
and resurrection. Also, Denck shows his colors as an Anabaptist by backing the stance that baptism is
not for infants, but for mature believers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evolution Of The Company And The Competitive Environment
Evolution of the Company and the Competitive Environment
From the time of its founding, the Cleveland Clinic never wanted to replace family physicians. Instead
they hoped to be utilized as secondary specialists that would be used as further consults that were
beyond the scope of the family practitioner. Although this style of practicing is still used in the system
today, the Cleveland Clinic has had to overcome many challenges and has implemented many changes
in order to maintain this system. Since it s founding the organization had operated with just a Board of
Trustees. With issues rising between the older and younger generation of leaders in the organization
and the lack of a succession plan left by the original founders, it was suggested that a Medical Survey
Committee be formed. In 1954, the Medical Survey Committee drafted a report stating the issues that
the Cleveland Clinic was facing and how establishing a Board of Governors could help solve some of
the issues (Clough, 2004). Some of these issues included: the lack of a democratic process, the legal
status, the research and educational institutions needed to be strengthen, the medical needs of the
community needed to be evaluated in order to ensure that the proper services were being offered, and
the patient care needed to be improved (Clough, 2004). With these issues and suggestions in mind the
Cleveland Clinic made a new organizational plan. First, the newly formed Board of Governors would

Nietzsche s New Morality as Reaction to the Old Essay
Nietzsche s New Morality as Reaction to the Old
The purpose of Friedrich Nietzsche s On The Genealogy of Morals (1887) is to answer the following
questions, which he clearly lays out in the preface: under what conditions did man devise these value
judgments good and evil? And what value do they themselves possess? Have they hitherto hindered or
furthered human prosperity? Are they a sign of distress, of impoverishment, of the degeneration of
life? Or is there revealed in them, on the contrary, a plenitude, force, and will of life, its courage,
certainty, future? (17). These questions come about from Nietzsche s rejection of the Darwinian
Spencerian utilitarian explanation of morality, characterized by his portrayal of the ... Show more

They believe that natural selection promotes altruism because it favors the existence of society and the
survival of groups. With principles of selection in mind, the good thus becomes what is socially useful
while the bad becomes what is harmful to society and others. Soon one forgets why altruistic actions
are good in the first place, but since this system of value is already so ingrained in one s mind, one
continues acting out of altruism what man always has done becomes what man always does.
Nietzsche certainly has in mind Paul Rée, Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and other English
utilitarian philosophers (Mill, Bentham et al) when he speaks of the English psychologists. In fact he
writes in the preface that Rée s book, The Origin of the Moral Sensations (1877), first gave him the
impetus to publish his own origin of morality (17 18). Nietzsche refutes this genealogy of morals,

Forshadowings And Mood In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
Have you ever despised your sibling/s at one point, but later started to appreciate them in your life? In
James Hurst s short novel, The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle is a disabled child and the narrator is his brother,
who despises him. The narrator, known as Brother, wanted to murder Doodle due to his disability, but
learns that Doodle is not much of a burden. He sets out to teach Doodle abilities that he could never do
before, but instead, he pressures him too far and ends up leading him to his tragic death. Thus, in The
Scarlet Ibis, Hurst uses diction, symbolism, foreshadowing, and similes to establish a horrifying mood
during the coffin scene part of the story, a melancholic mood during the death of the scarlet ibis, and a
dreary mood during the death of Doodle part of the story.
In the scene of the scarlet ibis s death, Hurst establishes a melancholic mood throughout the section.
As the scarlet ibis falls from the bleeding tree to its death, Doodle observes that the bird was still (10).
The stillness of the ibis heightens the melancholic mood in the scene, as readers might imagine a time
where they witnessed a death and felt a sense of sadness, thus creating a melancholic mood in the
section. Additionally, as the author compares the dead scarlet ibis and a broken vase, he states, for it
lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers (10). As the author distinguishes the similarities
between the scarlet ibis and the broken vase, it highlights how the ibis is

  • 2. Agonism in the Academy Rene Siluano Rws 280 Prof. Kinkade March 14th, 2013 Education, a most powerful tool of use in today s world and one that we probably take for granted, could possible be at risk as far as how knowledgeable we are becoming on the material at hand. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and because of agonism in academics, students now might not be getting the full potential out of their mind simply because of the way they/we are being taught. Deborah Tannen, a professor at Georgetown University, in the article Agonism in the Academy: Surviving the Argument Culture (2000) argues that discussion rather than debate is a more proficient way of teaching our students, likewise, collaborating ideas instead of tearing down material can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although very logical, this whole hearted sentimental quote is meant to appeal emotionally to readers by giving the feeling that we need to save our academic humanity, and not let it go to waste. In essence, Tannen is promoting cooperative discussion, where students and educators can build off each others ideas, and form new perspectives. So what should, or could, be the immediate solution to this issue? While discussing agonistic ideology, Tannen states, Our agonist ideology seems so deeply embedded in academe that one might wonder what alternatives we have (219). Tannen may be saying here that there are no immediate solutions at this point in time, most likely because we have been engaging in this agonistic learning style for quite some time. On the other hand, Tannen goes on to state later in the article, while discussing another reading group experience, Refocusing our attention. . .is the greatest gain in store if we can move beyond critique in it s narrow sense (220). Now the solution is blunt, we as students and educators need to step back from critique and step forward to open discussion. Tannen does an excellent job in explaining and exemplifying throughout her article how agonism has a negative affect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some people would argue that creative play is a very important thing to include in a child s day. Others say that creative play is not critical to a child s development but organized activities are. • 5. How Children Acquire Aggressive Reponses Childhood Aggression Many studies found frustration, various drugs, beliefs, traits and provocation are some influences that effect childhood aggression. Archer (1991) concentrated on biological influence such as norepinephrine, serotonin, cortisol and testosterone. This brief will focus on several theories that elevate aggression and can be positively modified by family and environment. Aggression was defined by Volavka Citrome (1999) as, a physical behaviour that causes psychological or physical harm or damage to objects or living beings. Aggression is often divided into two types one being instrumental, or proactive aggression and is pre meditated and frequently goal directed resulting from a lack of emotional sensitivity. In contrast, reactive aggression stems from excess emotional sensitivity and is developed through negative experiences and emotions including anger and anxiety (Tremblay et al., 2005). According to (Bandura, 1983, 2001; Mischel, 1973; Mischel Shoda, 1995), children acquire aggressive responses; either by observing others or by direct experience and this is similar to how they learn any form of social behaviour. Bandura (1983) examined this social learning theory and explained how the observational learning processes and modelling the behaviour of others can escalate the acquisition of aggressive behaviours by children in certain situations. This theory is closely associated to Huesmann s (1986, 1998) script theory. Huesmann (1986, 1998) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Disability Rights Movement People with mobility impairments have not created oppositional consciousness for their disability, but have been grouped together with individuals who are deaf or blind in developing an overall disability consciousness (Mansbridge Morris, 2001). Crucial to disability consciousness is the belief that all people with disabilities are oppressed in the sense of having been unjustly deprived of power, status, and opportunities...Like members of other oppressed groups who have developed an oppositional consciousness, people with a disability consciousness contend that their subordinate position is not due to personal failure (Mansbridge Morris, 2001, p. 84). Television stations, such as the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) that was created in 1967, along with other grassroots cable television movements in the 1970s, began with the mission to provide continuous coverage of political issues for citizen awareness and education (Sirianni Friedland, 2001). By the 1980s, commercial television was a dominant medium of communication, and local news was its cash cow (Sirianni Friedland, 2001, p. 189). With continued exposure to issues in society for the American public, individuals in the disability rights movement have another source of media to influence and promote their campaign. One important issue that had occurred in Seversville, North Carolina, described the city with years of neglect and public life that was in serious decline. In January 1995, community leaders started a campaign, Taking Back Our Neighborhoods, and televised the kickoff and continuing events on public television (Sirianni Friedland, 2001). Reporters for this particular campaign listened and responded to the concerns of problems in the community from those citizens who lived there. Different groups within the city, different churches and other civic connections, worked together and grew as agents of change within the political structure of the city. In this type of affinity chromatography, dyes compose the group of ligands than are employed in the technique (Hage et al., 2012). The initial motivation for scientists to investigate more about dye ligand affinity chromatography was given after the interactions that took place between Blue Dextran, a Cibaron Blue and dextran conjugate, which is used as a void marker in size exclusion chromatography, and particular kinases. Until then, only purification of various proteins by size exclusion chromatography with Blue Dextran, like for example, erythrocyte pyruvate kinase, phosphofructokinase, glutathione reductase, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sulfonic acid groups are responsible for molecules in order to be soluble enough in aqueous media. Another crucial characteristic is the negative charge of these groups at all pH values. Carboxyl, amino, chloride, or metal complexing groups can be part of these dyes, but in most of them nitrogen both in and outside on aromatic ring can be included (Denizli and PiÅŸkin, 2001). The most popular dyes used for the purification of proteins are triazinyl based reactive dyes. The synthesis procedure is mainly based on Cyanuric chloride or (1,3,5 trichloro sym triazine). In particular, the fact that electronegative atoms are present is the reason for the three carbon atoms to be characterized as extremely positive, and as a result they are very sensitive to nucleophilic attacks. The attachment of chromophore molecules to this is extremely simple and so dichlorotriazinyl dyes can be also formed (Denizli and PiÅŸkin, 2001). A characteristic example of this category of dyes is the Procion MX series (from Imperial Chemical Industries). These series can also react later with aniline, sulfanilates or other nucleophilic substituents in order to produce monochlorotriazinyl dyes like for example Cibacron (from Ciba Geigy) or Procion H (from ICI).The exact position of the sulfonate group on the aniline ring is the main characteristic that helps scientists to distinguish the two series, as in Procion H series it ... I solemnly believe that the statue should be put up because the pioneers had every right to come here. It is very easy today to compare it too refugees that come to America to better their lives also. Today we have people are coming to America to better their lives, just like the pioneers did. The idea of companionship is a necessity in life, because all different types of people and creations rely on the company of others. Without the company of others, people no longer act as they should in society. They no longer learn new things and they become outcasts. In the book, Frankenstein, the creature lives his life without a companion and the outcome is tragic. Companionship is a necessity in life, because living without a companion ... The Theory And The Psychoanalytic Theory Although used predominantly to explain the varying characteristics each individual possesses, personality is also a term often coined to define and explain the reasons behind an individual s motivations and reactions to certain events, entities and decisions. Defined by Larson Buss, 2005, personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that are organised and relatively enduring, and that influence his or her interaction with, and adaptions to, the intrapsychic, physical and social environments. In contrast, the humanistic approach emphasised the conscious awareness of needs, choices and personal responsibilities of the individual (Lahey, 2009). They believed that the personal worth of the particular individual, the centrality of human values, and the creative and active nature of human beings was what defined the person (McLeod, 2007). Basically, the humanistic approach, according to Abraham Maslow, was that humans are born good and that human nature is compassionate and positive (Larsen Buss, 2012). Both the psychoanalytic and humanistic theories differ from one another in multiple ways. One of the most prominent differences is their view on human nature. As mentioned above, Freud and his psychoanalytic concept, viewed humans as inherently bad. The id, he defined, operated solely on the pleasure principle, craving immediate gratification without consideration about moral values and the harm it could cause (McLeod, 2008). He also believed that the ego and the superego was the minds way of controlling the id ((Lahey, 2009; Larsen Buss, 2012; McLeod, 2008). In contrast, humanistic psychologists viewed human nature as fundamentally good. Maslow had a positive view on men, believing that each had the ability to grow and mature into proper beings, and make use of their full potential (Boeree, 2000 Larsen Buss, 2012). • 12. A Report On A Government A government should always be open to criticism, be held accountable for their actions, and be honest when notifying the public of any events. This creates government transparency and allows its citizens to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. In order to create this transparency in today s society, a technical system must be set in place. This technical system needs to contain government documents which are easily accessible to the public. But, not all documents should be housed in this accessible database. Some government knowledge should be kept secret and inaccessible, because it could fall into the wrong hands. Documents containing economic information, such as budgets and spending should be readily available on a database for the public to access. Without a transparent government, citizens can become unruly and no longer trust their government due to the high volume of secrets or hidden documentation. Solution I My first solution to this issue is to open a cloud database which would house any documents containing government budgets, spending, and/or salaries. This database would be accessible to everyone with the means to access a cloud database. The database could be accessed via an application downloaded onto a computer or mobile phone. There is already an app with these specifications available for Montgomery County in Maryland. • 14. Human Suffering, By The Marxian Analysis Of Capitalism And... Introduction In this essay, I will examine the concept of human suffering, namely inequality, alienation, oppression and violence as presented in the Marxian analysis of capitalism and class struggles. In examining these concepts I argue that the hierarchy of difference created by the binary model of inferior and superior class positions naturalises this human suffering. In many ways, human suffering is the negation of the other in order to determine oneself. In order to explore the key concepts that effectuate to human suffering, I will first talk about the concepts of inequality, alienation, oppression and violence in the context of case studies drawn from a Marxian analysis against capitalism. After examining the terms, I will critique how power was concentrated in a top down hierarchy within Marxist ideology. Human Suffering The struggle to live against deterministic ideologies constitutes many forms of human suffering. Human suffering could be largely due to the practice of negation of all others who do not belong to a dominant or all powerful group. Human suffering can take many forms, but in the context of capitalism and class struggles, Marx s conceptualisation of human suffering is in the form of inequality between classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, or the capitalist and the working class. This corresponds to half a litre of diesel oil and 5.5 kg of firewood [21]. 4.2 Microbial Fuel Cell Technology Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process, consuming about 1,900 kJ/m3 of treated wastewater [22]. Wastewater contains almost 9 times more energy than the energy used to treat an equivalent volume, thus creating the need to harness this energy through the use of a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) [22]. Microbial Fuel cell (MFC) is a device designed for electricity generation in the process of wastewater treatment [23]. Microbial fuel cell is a new form of renewable energy, which uses bacteria in wastewater to convert organic matter into electricity, while simultaneously treating the wastewater. The abridgement between time periods and movements are not times that we can consider as straight forward progressions, but times in their own right and merit. The luxury of looking back into the past is a convenience that allows the historian, student, or teacher to read into the times, but that convenience also draws lines where causes and effects were not as simple. The tendency to patch the new research into the old story even when the research in detail has altered the bearings of the whole subject is an effect of the convenience and discredits the past with comparisons to the present. After a costume ball, Gabriel, the protagonist, carries his good yet intoxicated friend Dr. Falke to the middle of town and leaves him passed out on a park bench. Dr. Falke then takes great preparation and skillfully sets up a plan to embarrass Gabriel. He arranges for everyone to be at a prince s ball and to not be recognized by Gabriel. The characters were melodramatic and lively which them each captivating and intriguing in their own way. Most of the characters were in the upper class of society and were stereotyped of their respective characters. For example, Einstein and his wife were a snobbish upper class couple who were portrayed as people who elegantly go through life sipping campaign, going to balls and having all of their needs fulfilled by Adel, the stereotypical maid and housekeeper. Price Orlofsky was a regular snobbish prince who was often never satisfied with anything going on around him. Frank was the typical large and proud jail keeper. Dr. Falke was the typical revengeful antagonist who was plotting his revenge throughout he elaborate plot. This brings to Einstein, the protagonist, who was played as the slightly naive typical rich respected townsman. My response to how these characters were portrayed was that they were done very well. They were done in a way that you could understand everything going on, even with the large amounts of complex singing. The acting in this Operetta was very well done. The actors spoke and carried themselves exactly like the character they were playing would have acted. They all spoke with different voices, accents and tonal patterns unique to their part. Many of the actors had to play different mini roles when they were at the palace. The best example of this is Einstein s wife, Roselinda who had to speak and sing with a ... • 32. Analysis Of Cushing s Syndrome ( Cs ) Cushing s syndrome (CS) is a condition whereby there is an excessive amount of glucocorticoids circulating in the human body1. There are two categories of CS, the most common type is exogenous, which is caused by supraphysiological amounts of glucocorticoids from an external source1. The second type is the endogenous CS and is caused by the endogenous over secretion of glucocorticoids by the adrenal glands2. The incidence of any form of CS has been reported to affect between 2 3 million population per year3, with a higher incidence in women over men4 5. CS is uncommon in children but if it does occur, it commonly presents with growth retardation and weight gain after puberty5. When an individual suffers from CS it causes a continuous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As shown in Table 1 Cushing s Disease is the most common cause of CS. This disease most commonly develops due to an ACTH producing pituitary tumor9. The increase in ACTH production leads to an increased ACTH concentration in plasma causing bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia and hypersecretion of cortisol from the adrenal cortex. Due to the feedback mechanism as shown in Figure 1 a chronic increase in cortisol leads to the suppression of CRH and ACTH secretion. The second major corticotropin dependent cause of CS is called ectopic corticotropin syndrome (Table I) and is caused most commonly from a pulmonary carcinoma however can be from other tumors and carcinomas such as bronchial carcinoma. These carcinomas produce ACTH in an abnormal place, this increase in plasma ACTH causes bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia and increased cortisol secretion, and once again high cortisol levels lead to a suppression of the HPA feedback loop9. This cause creates a more rapid and severe increased cortisol state. The third and final corticotropin dependent cause is similar to the above mechanism however is simply due to an increased secretion of CRH instead, this can be from any nonhypothalamic tumor secreting CRH. This mechanism therefor stimulates hyperplasia of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Investigating The Conversion Of Hydrogen Peroxide Sandy Ibrahim 10/30/15 AP Biology Period 6 Lab Two: Enzyme Catalysis Introduction This lab will observe the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen gas by the enzyme catalysis. The amount of oxygen generated will be measured and used to calculate the rate of the enzyme catalyzed reaction. Enzymes are proteins produced by living cells. Enzymes act as biochemical catalysts during a reaction, meaning they lower the activation energy needed for that reaction to occur. Through enzyme activity, cells gain the ability to carry out complex chemical activities at relatively low temperatures. The substance in an enzyme catalyzed reaction that is to be acted upon is the substrate, which comes together reversibly to the active site of the enzyme. The active site is the portion of the enzyme that interacts with the substrate. One result of this temporary union between the substrate and the active site is a reduction in the activation energy required to start the reaction of the substrate molecule so that products are formed. In a mathematical equation of the substrate (S) binding with the activation site (E) and forming products (P) is: E + S ES E + P Several ways enzyme action may be affected include: 1) Salt Concentration For example, if salt concentration is close to zero, the charged amino acid side chains of the enzyme molecules will attract each other. The enzyme will then denature and form an inactive precipitate. If salt concentration is extremely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. What Is Hans Denck Concerning True Love Concerning True Love This work is written by Hans Denck in 1527 and it serves like a mystical, yet systematic description of certain Anabaptist beliefs. Firstly, he speaks of how love, true love, is a spiritual gift with God being the perfect example of love in Jesus Christ. No one, Denck says, can love or even know love without first accepting Christ into their hearts. Denck also utilizes his theory of love to explain what is meant by the new law or new covenant in Scripture. While followers of God were once chained by the Law, Christians are now liberated from the Law because of Christ s death and resurrection. Also, Denck shows his colors as an Anabaptist by backing the stance that baptism is not for infants, but for mature believers, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Evolution Of The Company And The Competitive Environment Evolution of the Company and the Competitive Environment From the time of its founding, the Cleveland Clinic never wanted to replace family physicians. Instead they hoped to be utilized as secondary specialists that would be used as further consults that were beyond the scope of the family practitioner. Although this style of practicing is still used in the system today, the Cleveland Clinic has had to overcome many challenges and has implemented many changes in order to maintain this system. Since it s founding the organization had operated with just a Board of Trustees. With issues rising between the older and younger generation of leaders in the organization and the lack of a succession plan left by the original founders, it was suggested that a Medical Survey Committee be formed. In 1954, the Medical Survey Committee drafted a report stating the issues that the Cleveland Clinic was facing and how establishing a Board of Governors could help solve some of the issues (Clough, 2004). Some of these issues included: the lack of a democratic process, the legal status, the research and educational institutions needed to be strengthen, the medical needs of the community needed to be evaluated in order to ensure that the proper services were being offered, and the patient care needed to be improved (Clough, 2004). With these issues and suggestions in mind the Cleveland Clinic made a new organizational plan. First, the newly formed Board of Governors would handle any matters that ... • 38. Nietzsche s New Morality as Reaction to the Old Essay Nietzsche s New Morality as Reaction to the Old The purpose of Friedrich Nietzsche s On The Genealogy of Morals (1887) is to answer the following questions, which he clearly lays out in the preface: under what conditions did man devise these value judgments good and evil? And what value do they themselves possess? Have they hitherto hindered or furthered human prosperity? Are they a sign of distress, of impoverishment, of the degeneration of life? Or is there revealed in them, on the contrary, a plenitude, force, and will of life, its courage, certainty, future? (17). These questions come about from Nietzsche s rejection of the Darwinian Spencerian utilitarian explanation of morality, characterized by his portrayal of the ... With principles of selection in mind, the good thus becomes what is socially useful while the bad becomes what is harmful to society and others. Soon one forgets why altruistic actions are good in the first place, but since this system of value is already so ingrained in one s mind, one continues acting out of altruism what man always has done becomes what man always does. Nietzsche certainly has in mind Paul Rée, Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, and other English utilitarian philosophers (Mill, Bentham et al) when he speaks of the English psychologists. In fact he writes in the preface that Rée s book, The Origin of the Moral Sensations (1877), first gave him the impetus to publish his own origin of morality (17 18). Nietzsche refutes this genealogy of morals, however: This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Forshadowings And Mood In The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst Have you ever despised your sibling/s at one point, but later started to appreciate them in your life? In James Hurst s short novel, The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle is a disabled child and the narrator is his brother, who despises him. The narrator, known as Brother, wanted to murder Doodle due to his disability, but learns that Doodle is not much of a burden. He sets out to teach Doodle abilities that he could never do before, but instead, he pressures him too far and ends up leading him to his tragic death. Thus, in The Scarlet Ibis, Hurst uses diction, symbolism, foreshadowing, and similes to establish a horrifying mood during the coffin scene part of the story, a melancholic mood during the death of the scarlet ibis, and a dreary mood during the death of Doodle part of the story. In the scene of the scarlet ibis s death, Hurst establishes a melancholic mood throughout the section. As the scarlet ibis falls from the bleeding tree to its death, Doodle observes that the bird was still (10). The stillness of the ibis heightens the melancholic mood in the scene, as readers might imagine a time where they witnessed a death and felt a sense of sadness, thus creating a melancholic mood in the section. Additionally, as the author compares the dead scarlet ibis and a broken vase, he states, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers (10). As the author distinguishes the similarities between the scarlet ibis and the broken vase, it highlights how the ibis is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
