Essay On Identity
Identity not only helped me define who I am, but the concept of identity helped me construct my
perception of myself. Confidence is a trait I sometimes lacked throughout my lifetime. Confidence is
hard to acquire living in such a competitive, evolving world. Everything in life is a competition. My
grades, personality, and confidence all contribute to who I am. Personally, for me, it is hard to feel
comfortable in every social setting. I tend to be shy and nervous when I am around new people;
however, a time in my life I feel most comfortable is now! I am a transfer student from Fairfield
University, halfway through my junior year at Marist College, and I have never felt so motivated and
pleased where my life is at the moment. I enjoy my friend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I was at Fairfield University I did not fit in with the in crowd. Everything mattered at Fairfield,
especially physical appearance, which I found ridiculous. People were very judgmental and
unwelcoming. The environment around me affected my self confidence significantly, in a negative
way. Therefore, I felt trapped and alone. I almost felt like I was suffocating and there was no way to
escape this horrifying nightmare. One specific example I had at Fairfield University contributed to my
self esteem immensely. The friend group I made decided not to be friends with me anymore because
my ex boyfriends new girlfriend did not like my presence when I was around. Basically, she made my
life a living hell, and my so called best friends did not even look me in the face when I walked by.
That is when I knew it was time for a major change in my life. After this experience I learned a lot
about myself. For example, I was discouraged by this particular situation; however, this experience
made me realize how strong and independent I am. Attending Fairfield University was not a mistake,
it was a life lesson that made me learn new qualities about myself, and helped shape not only my
identity, but my life into something great and

A Comparison of Love in Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest...
The Phenomenon of Love in Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest
We know from the very opening scene of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet s love will end in
tragedy. We may wonder why Miranda and Ferdinand in The Tempest do not end up with the
same fate as Romeo and Juliet. Both couples are from opposing political families. Both couples
are enraptured with their lovers. Why then does Romeo and Juliet end with their death s and the
Tempest end with Miranda and Ferdinand s marriage plan? In this paper I will argue that
according to Shakespeare reason needs to guide the souls of lovers to avoid tragedy and find
bliss. I will do this by examining and comparing William Shakespeare s plays; Romeo and Juliet ...

In both cases we can see the passions of love between the
lovers clouding their reason.
In both plays Shakespeare has a councillor, or mentor, for each couple. In Romeo and Juliet
this mentor is Friar Laurence and in The Tempest it is Prospero. Because of the nature of the
phenomenon of love, it seems Shakespeare feels that both young couples need this mentor as a
source of reason and advice to help guide them through their passions. Both mentors warn the
couples against letting passion guide their souls. Both mentors do seem genuinely concerned
with the pairing and the good of the lovers and those connected to them. Most importantly the
mentors try to act as reason for the lovers while the are caught up in desire. These mentors are
one way that reason ought to guide the souls of lovers.
Love ending in tragedy
The play in which love ends in tragedy is Romeo and Juliet. After Romeo and Juliet s first
meeting at the dinner, we see how driven by passion Romeo is. After leaving the Capulet s
home, he is so taken with Juliet he must return. He climbs the Capulet s wall and sneaks up to
Juliet s balcony. There the two lovers exchange their passionate declaration of love for each
other. We only hear a slight hesitation from Juliet when she says [this contract tonight] is too
rash, too unadvised, too sudden but she ignores this thought

Cause Of Noise Pollution In The United Kingdom
Causes of noise pollution
We are bombarded with sound even when we live in rural areas. From crop dusters to large farm
equipment, we have plenty of sound in the country. In the urban areas, we not only have sound that is
produced at unnatural decibel levels, the sound is reflected from hard surfaces that form at every kind
of angle. We go to theaters and concerts where the ability to magnify sound has developed in
incredible ways. We listen on headphones, where sound is not only concentrated, but the waves pound
the eardrums with persistent and unnatural force.
Living next to airports, anywhere in the flight path of departing planes, and near maintenance facilities
where engine run ups can blast sound for miles, is another source of ... Show more content on

Inconsiderate people add to the enormity of urban noise by turning up their radios, televisions and
entertainment equipment up as loud as they will go. Some people drive their neighbours to distraction
by vacuuming or playing loud music, or having noisy parties late at night. The biggest cause of
neighbour disputes in the United Kingdom is noise it far outpaces any other factor.
Then there are those inconsiderate people who drive on urban roads with their sound system playing
as loud as it will go. They seem to be saying I like my music, if you don t like it, tough luck. I will
impose my taste on everyone else .
There can be nothing more annoying than when having found a nice place to sit on a beach or in a
public park, some idiot family come and sit right next to your encampment, turn their radio up full
blast and let their noisy children run riot and shout at one another.
Neighbour noise could be lessened if people and companies were more considerate about noise. If
houses and other buildings were built with a view to lessening sounds coming from the building there
would be less noise. If quieter vehicles were designed it might just lessen the constant hum of traffic.
Some countries use quiet road surfaces and these have proved successful in abating noise pollution.
Quieter airplanes, or quieter ways of operating them, need to be designed too.
If you move from an urban area to a rural area you hear sounds that you had forgotten. It is

Civil Disobedience, By Thoreau
Civil disobedience is the refusal to obey civil laws in an effort to induce change in governmental
policy or legislation. Thoreau s infamous ideas on Civil Disobedience, written in 1849, have been
monumental in the fight for change. It has helped influence change anywhere from the 1940s fight
against Danish resistance, to the 1950s and McCarthyism. Thoreau s words have helped lead the way
to freedom. It has made the people of the world think about how they are being governed and how
they are being treated. Thoreau s message of freedom in Civil Disobedience , transcend his own time
to be so influential to those throughout history for three main reasons which are that he is read around
the world, it had to do with helping yourself, and he connected it to real life.
The first reason why Thoreau s message of freedom in Civil Disobedience , transcend his own time to
be so influential to those throughout history is that he was being read all over the world. Even though
he was not the most popular writer in the United States, he was very well like everywhere else. His
writings have been reprinted countless times, both in English and in translation into many foreign
languages. His ideas were read and the people really took what he was saying to heart. They listened
to the messages that he was trying to convey and started to make changes. Henry thoreau states on

The Real Estate Appraisal Process
Real Estate Appraisal Process Executive Summary The real estate appraisal process is a process that
affects nearly everyone who lives in a home. Most people do not have the funding to purchase a home
outright and must rely on financing to purchase their homes. Banks require that a real estate appraisal
be conducted to determine what the market value of a property is so they know how much the
property is worth as collateral for the loan. Therefore the appraisal serves as the basis for factors such
as determining a fair market price, how much collateral a property can offer a lender, or in some cases
even how much a property should be able to earn in income in a best use scenario. This report will
outline the basic steps of evaluating the value of property as well as discuss some of the considerations
surrounding the appraisal process in general. Three Approaches to Value There are three primary
routes to establishing a real estate property values and these methods differ significantly. The most
common for residential real estate is the determination of market value or the sales comparison
approach. This method utilizes sales data to determine what other similar properties in the local
market have sold for. Another method of determining value is through a cost approach which is more
typical in new construction. For example, when a contractor builds a new house or structure they
might charge for the materials and labor that was used plus some amount of

enquiry has largely been limited to a materialistic understanding of natural and technological
processes. At one stage, science comprised the spiritual sciences of Alchemy and Metaphysics. With
the taking of the industrial path, the spiritual enquiry was neglected by the mainstream scientific
establishment. Technology has become increasingly complex without questioning its basic
foundations and long term effects, and has moved further and further away from the simple basic
workings of nature. Environmental, pollution, exploitation and dereliction have intensified with the

The Concept Of Abstract Data Types
Abstract The objective or purpose of this paper is to drill deep down into the concept of Abstract Data
Types. Draw the basic comparison between ADTs and few of the most frequently confused terms with
the concept. Examine how modern programing languages, predominantly, java, C#, Python, Ruby,
Objective C and C++ put these ideas into practice. The intent of my research is to help developers
identify the strengths and weakness of different abstract data type and evaluate scenario under which
each data type can be utilized to fully harness its maximum potential. Keywords: Abstract Data Types,
Data Types, Data Structures Abstract Data Types: Examine How Different Languages Choose To Use
the Concept Since most of the popular programing languages used today are object oriented in nature,
which in turn, is not a language, but a set of ideas that is supported by many languages, part of my
research will be focused on how these concepts came into play and the rest will be aimed at collecting
arguments to elaborate distinction and similarities between the two paradigms. Before the concept of
Object Oriented development was introduced, programs were written as a long piece of code, often
with all the data and variables defined in one place and all the logic in another. This Approach to
programing was known as Procedure Oriented. Although, procedural languages had named functions
and subroutines to make the program look more modular and maintainable, but as the code got bigger

The International Student Association ( Misa ) Lounge On...
When I initially found out that I was interviewing Josh for my one to one I wasn t too stoked on the
idea. I was a bit worried that our session together might not be as personal as I would like and that he
would find it hard to open up because of our differences. I originally asked him to meet me at the
Minnesota International Student Association (MISA) lounge on the second floor of Coffman Union.
MISA is a space specifically catered to International students and multi cultural students so I assumed
it would be different from what Josh might be accustomed to. When Josh arrived at the MISA lounge
the room was occupied by a student group event, so I took him to the room right next door, the Asian
Student Union lounge. By the way Josh looked around the room, I could tell that he was a little
uncomfortable by the Asianess of the room, so I asked him if he would rather do the interview
somewhere else. He replied back that he was fine with the space so we carried on with our 1 on 1.
To begin with, I asked Josh to tell me his story and share some significant moments in his life. It was a
very vague question and I didn t expect much contend from his answers. He began with the very
nonspecific details about his childhood growing up in Woodbury, MN and how lived a very normal
life. He talked about how he participated in soccer, baseball and hockey and how sports kept him
occupied while growing up. I felt that he wasn t sharing much so I asked him the question again about

Taxing Taxation And The Tax System
In the United States, taxing is a large source of funding for many programs. Taxes are instituted to all
U.S. citizens by the government for government programs. Without taxes roads, buildings, public
services, and much more would not be accessible to everyone. Yet, as simple as a tax sounds, there are
several different qualifications and standards that make it more complicated (Weigant). There are
several different tax systems, only two used in the United States: regressive and progressive taxation.
Regressive taxation is a tax system where the proportion of income paid in taxes decreases as one s
income increases. Progressive taxation is a tax system where individuals or families that have a higher
percentage of income will pay more in taxes. Not only does the tax dollars increase, but the tax rates
also increases. In conjunction with these tax systems, there is also a proportional tax, which means all
individuals or families pay the same rate of income despite their income (Roach). Within these tax
systems are various types of taxes imposed by the United States government. In 1913, the sixteenth
amendment legalized the first income tax proposed by the federal government that was levied on
wages and salaries. The federal government will only tax a portion of the total income, which is all the
sum acquired by an individual or family from all sources of work. Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is a
deduction from the total income, but the number deducted is not based off of

Military Heritage Essay On Taps
Military Heritage Essay Taps
A family cries as the bugle sounds taps, a solemn tune played at a military funeral. How many of us
have ever considered the history behind the sounding of taps? When observed, our traditions create a
sense of heritage and honor. This essay, will discuss the history and importance for the playing of taps.
History
During the American Civil War, a new melody named taps played in the place of lights out. Although,
adopted by the Union Army to mark the end of the day, it also marked the end of life. Taps is the most
recognize bugle call of all times, its origins are straight from the battlefield and is a tribute with the
highest respect.

Adaptation
Private Oliver Wilcox Norton first sounded the notes of taps in 1862 (Schneider, 2002). Only
moments before the call for lights out, Butterfield presented Wilcox the notes for his new melody.
With little practice, Wilcox stood above the camp and began to play Butterfields version of taps. This
beautiful melody quickly spread throughout the Union Army. Often, southern troops were so close
they could hear the trumpet and soon adapted Butterfields taps. After being adapted for lights out, this
melody replaced three cannon volleys to honor a soldier s burial. Cannons exhaust a large plume of
smoke when fired and troops that did not want to expose their position adapted taps in place of cannon
volleys.
Meaning
Battle is an exhausting effort and uncertainty clutters the minds of soldiers in time of chaos. A
soothing melody played over a battle fatigued camp offers comfort. Day is done, gone the sun, words
taken from the lyrics to taps, reminds people they have survived the hardships of the day. All is well,
safely rest; God is nigh, assures people that it is safe to rest and they can be comforted that their God
is near. Taps, born on a battlefield in the darkest days of American history, has similar meaning to all
that have endured combat and uncertainty of living to see the next day. Those that know the history of
taps and its meaning also understand the importance.
Importance
Today, on every American military post, taps retires the

The Rights Of Rejection Of The Contract
The place of examination is subject to the agreement of both parties. It may be on pre shipment
inspection , nonetheless, it is inconvenient for the buyer to do so if he is in another country and has no
representative at the place of shipment . In Bragg v Villanova , the seller received the documents and
paid the price before taking the delivery and finding that the goods was not of contract quality. The
court found that he was considered as not accepting the goods until he had reasonable opportunities to
exercise examination, therefore, he had not lost his right of rejection. The two rights of rejection in
FOB contract are applied at the similar principle of CIF contract as discussed. In particular, if the
documents are inconsistent with the contract, the buyer is entitled to reject them and give the seller
opportunity to correct the defects; he may reject the non conforming goods even though he accepts the
documents . Under section 51(3) of the Sale of Good Acts 1979, the damages are measured by: ... the
difference between the contract price and the market or current price of the goods at the time or times
when they ought to have been delivered, or (if no time was fixed) at the time of the refusal to deliver .
In case of the classic FOB contract, the place assigned in the contract for shipment is deemed the place
where the market is relevant . The time when the goods ought to have been delivered is considered as
the time at which they ought to have been placed free on

History of African Americans and Higher Education Essay...
For blacks, the history of higher education typically points to segregated education. Before the Civil
War, the social system promoted the belief that blacks wouldn t get return on their time spent in higher
education. Brown and Ricard (2007) noted that most North institutions were reluctant to allow black
enrollment in colleges and universities, and in the South, where slaveholder s were still powerhouse
businessmen, slaves would never be allowed to become more educated than their owners. The
reluctance of the White leaders to allow blacks to formally be accepted into higher education
programs held blacks back from achieving what many aspired to, and were fully capable of,

When ex slaves demanded a formal public schooling, they were really asking the South to develop and
embrace a relatively new philosophy of education. Effectively, they were having white southerners
pay for the education of people they once owned as property, and had the right to receive what most
whites in the region hadn t had available previously. According to Anderson (n.d.), the Reconstruction
Era (1877) presented a unique problem for black professionals. Although more blacks were becoming
qualified for educational and employment opportunities, the job demand shifted to industrial needs.
For black leaders, having to get industrial training instead of a broader, more useful education was a
beneficial short term answer for employment. The primary advocate for industrial training was Booker
T. Washington. Washington, educated at the Tuskegee Institute located in Alabama, expressed publicly
that manual labor will be more beneficial to individuals because that was the type of work available
(Anderson, n.d.). On the opposite side of Washington s argument for occupational training was W. E.
B. Du Bois. Du Bois, who came from Harvard, had higher aspirations than occupational education,
with a conviction that Black life and culture should be a primary topic of Black thought and
investigation (Anderson, n.d. p.1). Considering the value of a general degree in comparison to a

American Beauty Film Analysis
American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball, explores the Burningham family
s projection of a perfectly normal lifestyle or the ideal American family portrayal. This film is about
how everything is not as it seems behind closed doors. As the storyline progresses the film adheres to
multiple genre codes and conventions to deepen the story arc, this is known as Genre Hybridity as it
refers to two or more established genre s through storyline, etc. (REF TO TEXTBOOK) American
Beauty is a hybrid genre text because it conforms to more than one genre this being romance, satire
and drama through formal elements such as narrative and screen aesthetic. This can also be further
proved by examples of single/hybrid genre texts like The Notebook (2004, Nick Cassavetes), Fight
Club (1999, David Fincher) and Bold and the Beautiful (1987 , William J Bell).
http://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/1213628.pdf?acceptTC=true Many major box office hits in today s day
an age contain comedy, witty one liner s, major plot twists but mostly romance. The romance genre
has become a booming success in the film industry as of late 2000 s. (REF) The genre is difficult to
define but can be described as the development of love between characters as a main narrative (REF).
This can be shown by the massive success of the iconic film, The Notebook grossing in at $115, 603,
229 worldwide. (REF) The film is set around two characters falling in love, therefore falling under the
romance genre. One of the conventions of a romance film is forbidden love, this is shown throughout
the Notebook between the two main protagonists and is also shown in the movie American Beauty. In
American Beauty the protagonist, Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) becomes infatuated with his
daughter s best friend, Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) this creates tension between the characters as
Angela continuously entices Mr. Burnham whilst knowing they can never be together due to the age
gap and because of his daughter, it is more of an unnatainable lust, therefore conforming to the
forbidden love narrative contained within most romantic films. Another aspect of the romance genre is
tragedy. Throughout Shakespeare s works all love ends in heartache, there are

Lessons Learned from A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings
A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings is a short fiction story written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in
1955. Magical realism plays a major part in this story by the use of fantasy of an old man being
portrayed as an angel who has come to create miracles to a family along with many other believers.
Some will believe, others will just shoo this so called angel away in a painful and heart breaking way.
I enjoyed this story very much. I was able to get very interested. Marquez starts it out with On the

Just like in this story, many people were throwing leftover foods to him, coming to him just for a
miracle, then having nothing more to do with him. They had only used him and did not see him for
who he really was. What would seem to be humiliating to me and was to the angel, I assume, was that
a priest, Father Gonzaga, sent away to Rome for a judgment on what they should do.
A human with wings was foreign to these people. Some did not believe because an angel is appeared
to be beautiful. This old man was just your average Joe with wings to many people. However, some
had paid money to see this supernatural creature. What was magical at this point was when Marquez
talks about the woman who disobeyed her parents and was changed into a spider. How magical can
this be? A woman, who is a spider the size of a ram! The angel and this woman were the main
attractions of the town. The realistic element here is obvious. For instance, in the town of Ironton,
when someone goes to use the bathroom everyone knows about it. Similarly, it did not take long for
this town to hear the news. Anyway, the woman spider ended up getting more attention because her
story was of the truth to the town and the angel was only of mocking fun. Anyhow, people had paid so
much money that Pelayo and his family became rich. They built a mansion. Their child played with
the angel. The angel and their son both came down with the chicken pox at the same time. An angel

Cornelius Vanderbilt Essay
The want for wealth saturates everyone s mind at one point or another. Almost everyone dreams of
having the large mansion near the beach, the multiple cars, etc., but this money does not just come, it
either has to be inherited or earned. During the 1800s, most wealth was inherited, but there were a few
self made men that worked their way from the bottom to the top in order to become wealthy. One man
in particular influenced wealthy men to come like Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller. He was able to
begin many of the ideas brought about during the Gilded Age because not only was he a major
influence in society, but he greatly changed the economy and the industries he was involved in during
that time. Lastly, he modernized commerce for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vanderbilt was the first businessman in America to try to monopolize other businesses by creating
lower prices. This enabled him to become wealthy because the lower his prices went the more
customers he gained. Once other companies found that they could also lower their prices, it added
more competition for Vanderbilt, so he had to begin to create trusts. During the Gold Rush in
California, many people went by sea to go from the East Coast to the West Coast. At the time
Vanderbilt had the lowest prices and he was putting many other steamboat companies out of business;
so The Steamboat Association threw in the towel and bought him out. For $100,000 and an annual
payment of $5,000 for ten years, Vanderbilt agreed to withdraw from the Hudson River market. 2 By
making other steamboat companies pay him rent to stay out of the industry, he was still becoming
extremely wealthy without having to do any work. Even though Vanderbilt was extremely wealthy, he
was very cautions with his money and only spent it when he knew something was a strong investment
that would get him more powerful. During the Gold Rush, the other steamboat industries used the

From a multitude of treatments to doctors appointments, from new medications to hospital visits, the

Angeliki Pelehrinis had anger in her, she did not want to deal with this cancer. There were times where

Macbeth Movie And Play Comparison
Macbeth movie and play comparison paragraph Tragedy is a strong and contradicting event that leaves
the victims with catharsis and pity. The audience experiences sympathy towards the culprit because of
their reasons into why they fell into the darkness. These same emotions are felt when contrasting the
behaviour of Macbeth from the movie and the play. In the movie, Macbeth, by Rupert Goold, the
audience is mesmerized to feel less affinity towards Macbeth in contrast to the play because of the
differences in the plot, how the characters are developed, and the motifs in this militaristic film(This
last point is too specific).
To start off, the audience feels less sympathy towards Macbeth in the movie because of the main

There are a few snippets that are different from the play but also have a large impact on the plot. This
is indicated in the movie when Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a personal conversation in the
change room. Macbeth says, Be innocent of the knowledge dearest chuck, And with thy bloody and
invisible hand, cancel and tear to pieces great bond.....but hold thee still; So prithee, go with me (III.
Ii. 50 60). With these words, in the movie, he speaks in a frustrated manner, as if he is forcing Lady
Macbeth to follow his path into darkness by tenaciously grasping her hand. This creates less sympathy
for Macbeth. Another significant difference in the movie was when Lady Macduff and her sons and
daughters get assaulted by the murders. Macbeth is also present in that scene and he himself finishes
the cruel act as he reveals his dagger from his belt. Nevertheless, in the play, Macbeth remains in his
castle and calls upon the murderers to finish his dirty work. Therefore, these small differences in the
plot including Macbeth s strange behaviour shown in the movie are far more brutal and he is shown
less compassionate towards the

The DCV Merger
What is a merger? Most people would think that it is some sort of combination of two or more
companies to be one. A simple synonym describing this noun would be a: combination, fusion,
integration, confederacy or even an incorporation. Common small business approach of a merger is to
make all work efficient and at a reduced cost to promote new products and services within another
venture doing roughly the same ratio of productivity. Within the mergers concept, there is often a term
used as discounted cash flow (DCF). This logic is strictly for assessment of the companies. There are
both advantages and disadvantages for DCF. The advantages of this model allow for changes in cash

Below is a broken down overview of areas that need to be addressed:
Research: Target needs to perform a detailed research on its e/m commerce platforms and those of the
competition. Since Target is the follower, without spending too much in R D it can take advantage of
what Amazon has proven to be working and internalize those practices that increase number of visitors
and transactions. Using focus group studies and split testing1 Target can pinpoint aspects of the
platforms that work well, and areas that need improvement. Therefore, interface and content are the
two areas of focus of the research.
1Split Testing: Experiments with two variables, one controlled and one varied; also known as A/B
testing.
Interface: The lay out of Target.com and the mobile extension of the website as well as Target s mobile
app and its coupon app Cartwheel (currently under beta testing) need to be intuitively designed to
allow for easy navigation, selecting and comparing products and making payments.
Above all, as an extension of Target s in store differentiation strategy, the company needs to
implement strong customer service features on all its digital platforms as well. This will include
friendly, well English speaking customer service reps available 24/7 customers can talk to about
questions or technical problems with little or no waiting time.

High Stakes Testing Pressure Summary
Have you ever felt the pressure of high stakes testing as a student, a teacher, an administrator or even
as a parent? The goals of federal and state governments of high stakes testing are to improve schools.
The government believes if there are negative consequences tied to standardized test performance then
teachers and students will work harder which will increase test scores. The use of standardized testing
dates back several decades but with the passing of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002, high stakes
testing is mandated nationwide. The article, High Stakes Testing and Student Achievement: Updated

one goal and that is to re examine the relationship between high stakes testing pressure and its

when Dana all of a sudden starts to get dizzy and Dana then finds herself in a grove of trees thats in
the late 1800 s in the state of Maryland by a nearby river when she spots a young boy drowning

Alice then eventually kills herself and because of that Rufus also nearly kills himself. Rufus then
clings to Dana because she s just like Alice but he then tries to rape Dana but in doing so, Dana stabs
Rufus and kills him. Dana then immediately appears back at her apartment all beaten up.
The writing style that Octavia Butler is very simple. Nothing in this novel is very dramatized or
extremely brutal. Although it t does have a few very dramatic and sad at points when it talks about
Dana getting beat up and Allice hanging herself. The feeling is very dark and kind of dingy because of
all the slavery in this book that the characters go through. This novel has a lot to do with slavery back
in the 1800 s. It kind of talks about the life of some African Americans back in the 1800 s and some
being worked on the Weylin Plantation. It has a lot of violence and deals with whipping, hangings,
rape, and many other brutal actions.
The culture in this books is African American. The African American culture that this book goes
through is the life of an African American in the 1800 s. Back in the 1800 s African Americans were
treated very differently than they are treated today. Butler focuses on some of the aspects that they had
to go through. Such as slavery, rape, and getting abused and beaten. African Americans weren t
allowed to do a whole lot. They had to always live in fear.

Mexican American War Essay
Introduction/Background
The Mexican American War began on April 25, 1846. The war lasted two years losing many men on
both sides. The Mexican war was the third major fought by the United States. In 1810, Miguel
Hidalgo y Costilla triggers the beginning of Mexico s fight for independence from Spain. Mexico
gained its independence in 1821 after a long and bloody revolution against Spain. For Mexico, the war
between them and the United States was a fight to keep their institutions and national integrity intact,
to protect themselves from present and future aggressions by the Americans, but more than anything
else, the war was a struggle for land. In the early days of the republic, most Americans made their

which was known as the San Patricio Brigade. These soldiers would fight alongside Mexico in the
war...they were soon captured by the U.S forces and branded with a D pm their faces for deserter and
hanged on the gallows. On April 11 the Mexican troops stationed at Matamoros had welcomed a new
commander and 2,000 more soldiers. On May 8, the Mexicans were all along the enemy line. When
the two armies were only half a mile apart, Mexico fired with their big guns and cannons. The
Americans quickly attacked the Mexican front line. Hardly either side used their bayonets, knives or
bare hands. General Taylor s army fought several battles south of the Rio Grande. He captured the
important city of Monterrey and defeated a major Mexican force at the Battle of Buena Vista in
February 1847. President Polk remarked that he wanted, a small war, just large enough to require a
treaty of peace and not large enough to make military reputations. Scott and his army entered Mexico
City on September 14, 1847. The fall of the Mexican capital ended the military phase of the conflict.
President Polk s goal was to create a threefold force: an Army of the West, to conquer New Mexico
and California; an Army of the Center, to keep Chihuahua and northern Mexico under control; and an

Although coming up with solution to those problems are challenging, at least I learned how to address
them. Since I understand the causes and consequences of social problems, I am now comfortable to
discuss my points of view with another individual in an educated discussion. Furthermore,
understanding the causes and consequences has also allowed me to understand that not everybody has
the same points of view. We can all go through the same situation, but we all experience it differently,
and precisely that experience is what shapes our perceptions of things. Thus, my empathy increased
greatly, because when my perception gets challenged, I understand the the other person has

understood that it is not in their power to change their economic situation, but it relies on the
institutions that do not allow them to earn better wages, or do not allow them to have the same
opportunities as others. My stereotypes were challenged with every social problem discussed in class.

Depiction Of The Berlin Wall
The Depiction of the Berlin Wall and the Relation to its Historical Importance
The Berlin Wall, built in August of 1961, was a physical symbol of the division between East and
West Germany. After World War II, East Germany, also known as the German Democratic Republic,
constructed a wall that remained an indication of the divide of Germany for almost thirty years. The
purpose of this barrier was to separate democratic West Germany from communist East Germany.
During the Cold War, crossing this concrete wall was not an easy task, and it most likely led to
punishment and death.
The novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, written by John le Carré, illustrates the tasks of West
European spies during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall played a key role throughout the Cold War, thus
le Carré wrote about crossing the Wall in his book. The two parts from the novel that will be analyzed
contain descriptions of characters attempting to crossing the Wall. The novel begins with the death of
Karl Riemeck. Karl, a British spy, was trying to escape East Berlin and cross over into West Berlin
before being shot. The second event occurs toward the end of the novel. Alec Leamas and his love
interest, Liz, are both shot while trying to get over the Berlin Wall. These events represent how
dangerous crossing from the East to the West was back during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall can be
seen as a potent symbol in the novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold because the depiction of the

Persuasive Speech On Conformity In Science
How bizarre would it be to live in a world where people still believed the Earth was flat? Or if doctors
were drilling holes into their patient s heads for migraine relief ? Luckily, we exist on a planet where
curios forefathers have already paved the scientific highway to innovation. If renowned scientist such
as Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein had followed the scientific norms of their time, rather challenge
accepted beliefs; they would have never made crucial discoveries that impact our world today.
Furthermore, people should understand that scientific creativity is vital for progression. Resisting
conformity is important within the scientific community; it is said that in science people must question
everything, and provide evidence to support their discoveries. Proving or disproving beliefs have an
impact on our daily lives, and the most critical discoveries were made by creative minds.
Despite the advice of peers being highly valued, one should refrain from succumbing to the scientific
beliefs of others without question. In science, conformity could be described as a parasite draining
intelligence from humanity. In order to learn and grow, we must cultivate our minds by thoroughly
understanding the principles of a subject. However, most pupils have become accustomed to taking
their teacher s lessons at face value, and tend to memorize subjects in contrast to than learning them.

There is no Separation of Church and State With the dead rising from their graves en masse, most of
the living dropped to their knees and began praying for salvation from a vengeful God while the

End Times, established a new prejudice for the unnatural, resulting in controversial changes in
governmental politics and ideas to protect or segregate the newly Risen from the living. However, due
to the supernatural circumstances of the Rising, the Church arguably provided better support for

During the Rising, Roarton was left to fend for its own after the national government prioritized the
safety of larger, more urban areas. Instead of letting the whole village descend into chaos and allowing
the newly risen to prey on the citizens, the Church provided some sort of moral and emotional support
for the living, even naming Bill Macy as the Shepherd of Roarton to offer its official support to the
HFV in their efforts to fight off the rabid Undead. In the government s stead, the Church provided
stability and order when the outside world was falling to ruin. And it is because of this support that
Roarton s affairs are usually dealt with by the Parish council even after the Rising had passed and
everything was returning to some semblance of normalcy. Having guided Roarton through the
turbulent events of the Rising, Vicar Oddie does his best to keep his congregation on guard, having
lost all trust on outside forces (the Government) to look after them. He keeps order by reminding his
followers who was there in their time of need and demanding that they keep vigilant of any threat that
would hurt the village by having them remember the atrocities the Undead committed in their

The Military Of The Army Essay
Mission Command Army officer who in charge of leading military missions must bear in mind that his
success or failure is dependent on his commanding style. There are typical ways through which an
officer is more successful than the other is. Just think about why a great Greek s military leader,
Thucydides, failed to save the city of Amphipolis. He was distant from the army to protect the
important military strategic city. Thucydides failure was his absence that made his army
psychologically impotent and the enemy courageous. () Command presence was vital in classical
periods because of the limitation of means of communication. Leaders usually led their army through
direct involvement in detailed tasks. Command presence, more than influencing the army through
close relationship with subordinate, has also a great impact on the enemy army. As a classical custom
required leaders to take part in leading the army, many great leaders was successful by taking direct
command of the army on the front battle. The coalition army in Napoleonic War purposefully avoid
fighting where Napoleon had a direct command on the army. It is so evident that Napoleon presence
had psychological influence on his own army and had taken as a center of gravity by the coalition
army of Europe. Alexander the Great defeat the vast area of Asia Minor with small number of the
army due to Alexander himself directly led the Army. Since command presence have a remarkable

Snow Country Analysis
Snow Country A place or Emotional and Psychological state. Snow country is a place in a Western
Japanese country, which we can consider as the setting of this novel. The expression does not mean
where snow falls. Though an area, Y. Kawabata, the writer of the book writes in such a way that it
portrays more about a love affair, human feelings, emotions, loneliness, and a state of a person in
isolation. Likewise, the novel reveals how a human relationship can be complicated and arduous at
times to understand. It tells about people in a relationship of love, trying to love, and connect to one
another, but difficult to compare. The closer they are, the more both parties try to know each other,
and the more they found out that they do not. Such is the case of the relationship between these
parties: Shimamura and Komako, Shimamura and Yoko, and a love triangle between Yukio, Komako,
and Yoko. An affair of the moment, no more. Nothing beautiful about it. You know that it couldn t last
(22). Shimamura who can be considered a touch of melancholy, said the above statement, a
personality that wants to love but find it difficult to love, he is only interested in satisfying his sexual
desire. He is a wealthy man, but he is bored, and end up a life of idleness. With this nature of his,
Shimamura left his home country, Tokyo to a hot spring country to seek for a way out of his boredom.
Did he find a solution to this boredom? Did he get to fill the vacuum in his life? The

Big Fish Research Paper
At New Melones Reservoir, despite the continuing snow melt, the water level dropped another foot
last week. The water clarity is good and the temperature is slowly coming up, now averaging 76 to 81
degrees. Trout are showing signs of schooling over deep water and feeding on shad minnows. Trollers
have been finding trout at 40 to 60 feet with Speedy Shiners, Needlefish, and ExCel lures. Night
fishermen have been doing well by anchoring over fairly deep water and lowering their light to about
20 feet. This attracts plankton, which in turn, attracts shad, which will attract larger fish. Live
minnows and nightcrawlers are choice baits. The kokanee numbers may be down, but the quality is
good with some going 15 to 18 inches. Bladed lures may work well in deeper water as they create
vibration which will attract fish. Scented corn on each hook is important. Big trout winner at Glory
Hole Sports was, again, Bob James, of Murphys, with a 2 pound rainbow caught at 55 feet in the main
lake. Big catfish winner was John Tennant, of Twain Harte, with an 11 pound, 15 ounce fish caught
with sardine bait in the main lake. Bass fishing is good for those who specialize in that type of fishing.
Hayden Lee, of Angels Camp, recently caught a 10 pound Largemouth Bass on a topwater lure and he
had no net in the boat. He and a friend were able to boat the fish for photos before release.

Analysis of The Romantic Elements In Sleepy Hollow
In the novel Sleepy Hollow, by Peter Lerangis, several elements of the Romantic period of literature
are evident. Themes carry throughout the novel that suggest a strong Romantic influence upon the
text. The story is rich in colorful figurative language and contains a spell binding plot that leaves the
reader feeling very satisfied. In the midst of such an enchanting story are the Romantic themes, such
as a deep appreciation of nature in conjunction with the condemnation of city life, exaltation of
emotion over reason along with the defiance of conventional rules and traditions, and interest in local
folk/ethnic culture, while providing the reader with plenty of attention to the supernatural. Each of
these elements combines to create a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is ironic that for the duration of the beginning of the novel, Crane refuses to allow anyone to speak
of such theoretically impossible tales as the tale of the Headless Horseman. However, after seeing the
beast for himself, he is pleading with the people of the town that they must believe [him], and that he
can assure all of them of the visual contact he made with a horseman. A dead one. Headless! (Lerangis
66). With his newfound faith in the credibility of the legends around the hollow, Ichabod decides that
all of the logic and reason he had previously relied on are of no use to him. It is ironic that one night s
events have changed his views on reasoning so quickly. Nearing the novel s end, Ichabod burns all of
his ledgers and papers that had held his knowledge over the past several years. In doing so, it is
apparent that he has accepted the fact that sense and knowledge had betrayed him in Sleepy Hollow
(Lerangis 125). Ichabod s sense and knowledge are personified in this passage to show the reader that
two ideals which he had held so close to heart and high in regard had proved to be inadequate. This
further exaggerates the Romantic ideals of the power of emotion over all reason and logic. Along with
this newfound reliance on emotion rather than reason is a defiant quality of all formal rules and
traditions. All of the other authoritative figures in New York shun

Advancements in Prosthetic Limbs
CHAPTER 1 Introduction
Prosthesis is a term used for replacing a human body part which has been damaged or cut accidently
with an artificial one. Hybrid prosthetic limb is a combination of mechanical and electrical circuit in
which a controller gives command to electrically driven motor for the gripper opening and closing.
Signal for the gripper opening or closing is acquired from the other shoulder movement. A strap on the
shoulder is tied to a string which switches on or off the limit switch to give a trigger signal. This
trigger signal actuates the motor in the gripper to perform open or close operation.
In the past few years prototype has been going under many modifications. Last year it was completed
but few flaws were there. Spring Mechanism was used by previous degree but it was not reliable as
due to excess use spring lost its elasticity and could not be used for triggering. Spring mechanism was
also not aesthetically good. A lot of aesthetics was to be done. To cater for this problem we used limit
switch for efficient triggering and made compact circuitry using 8 pin controllers and added much to
aesthetics of limb.

Prosthesis is a term used for replacing a human body part which has been damaged or cut accidently

Mozart s Effect On The Theory Of The Mozart Effect
1. What is the problems being studied
The problem being studied is whether listening to Mozart causes an increase in IQ scores. Several
researchers have made this claim, yet others have not been able to replicate the experiment.
2. What is the authors hypothesis
Steel, Ball Runk (1997) sought to test the theory of the Mozart effect based on the study completed by
Rauscher, Shaw Ky (1993). The authors hypothesis predicted that if the Mozart effect enhances spatial
reasoning tasks, then listening to Mozart s music should enhance the participant s ability to complete
the backwards digit span task.
3. How was the hypothesis developed
The authors reviewed several previously published studies on the subject of the Mozart Effect.
4. How does this study relate to the problem
Rauscher et al specified that an appropriate task would involve not just spatial recognition but should
incorporate spatial and temporal transformation, which was the basis for the dependent measure of
backwards digit span task. If listening to Mozart was proven to improve performance, then the
participant s performance on the backwards digit span task should improve after listening to Mozart.
5. What type of research design did Steele et al. use
This research followed the empirical research method of a true experiment since it contained the
following critical features: the independent variable is a manipulated variable under the researcher s
control; the researcher uses random assignment to

Hairtyle Definition
Proportion is the comparative relationship of one thing to another. A well chosen hairstyle can create
the illusion of better proportion. It is essential when designing a hairstyle to take into account the
client s body shape and size. Challenges in body proportion become more obvious if the hair form is
too small or too large. A general guide for classic proportion is that the hair should not be wider than
the center of the shoulders, regardless of the body structure.
Proportion is also defined as any portion or part in relation to the whole. No one certain feature or
style produces beauty but rather the relationship or harmony created when all components come
together into a total image. Why does a hairstyle, for example, look great on one ... Show more

Many have a side of the face that appears heavier. Many have one eye that is slightly smaller or one
flare of the nose that is slightly larger. And so, adaptability becomes the first design consideration.
During your client consultation, take the time to make notations of the asymmetry to the face. If we
design the hair towards the low side of the face, we will accentuate it. If we duplicate the head form
with either fullness or the lack thereof, we emphasize it. Feel the bones of the head and take note of
the growth patterns in the outer and inner perimeters. Remember that the outer perimeter creates the
strongest influence to the features. Be very careful about the hair that touches the face. Will it point to
an unflattering feature, such as a pointed nose? If there is a protrusion of the frontal bone, the fringe
area will lift and dry shorter than anticipated. We have found that working with two mirrors is of
tremendous benefit: one for the frontal view and one for the profile. Watch that you do not accentuate
a poor profile with an extension in that area. The mirrors will tell you things that the eye cannot see
directly. In addition, using a haircutting chair gives the best view of the back and sides of the head
because you are looking directly into them. If you are looking down at the hairline, your vision is
altered. (No, it is not for your feet; although that is a

Compare And Contrast Pearson And John Diefenbaker
Prime Ministers of Change: Lester Pearson vs John Diefenbaker
Gandhi once said, We must be the change we wish to see in the world. Lester Pearson and John
Diefenbaker are two of countless individuals who have put this advice to action. These two influential
Prime Ministers have made multiple important changes to Canada and the world. Despite having
different goals and priorities, both Prime Ministers have improved the lives of many and are
considered important in Canadian history. Though John Diefenbaker has made numerous contributions
that benefited the country, Lester Pearson made extensive and constructive changes that not only
bettered Canada, but that also shaped our future and our identity, making him the more significant

One of Pearson s goal was to strengthen relationships between French and English Canadians. On
April 21 1963 when Quebec separatists placed a bomb in a Canadian army recruiting office killing a
janitor, Pearson called for a royal commission to investigate bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada.
From the recommendations made during the royal commission, Pearson created the Official
Languages Act, which states that federal services such as federal courts and government ministries,
must be offered in both English and French. This makes him significant, because bilingualism in
Canada still exists today and is still an important part of our culture. On the other hand, Diefenbaker s
Bill of Rights got replaced in 1984, and none of his contributions reflect Canada s culture or identity
the way Pearson s does. Though Canada is often regarded as the United States little brother , one thing
that differentiates Canada from the US is their free health care system. Medicare, Canada s universal
health insurance, is only one of the changes Pearson introduced to Canada s welfare state. Pearson
also established the Canada Pension Plan in 1966 to support retired citizens, as well as the Canada
Assistance Plan which funded welfare programs for the disabled and injured. At the time, Canada had
a strong economy, making additions such as the Canada Student Loans Program and increased funding
for university research possible. Not only did

Organizational Leaders Need For Change
Organization s today do all they can to improve their performance with an ever changing environment.
Therefore, having strong leadership is needed when addressing change. Organizational leaders need to
have a well developed vocabulary to help improve performance during organizational change.
Leadership has the ability to create a vision and encourage others to achieve the vision for the
organization. Therefore, organizational leaders must identify the need for change and communicate it
throughout the organization. However, leadership is only one piece of the equation, without involving
the employees the vision of the organization will not be achieved. In order for leaders to achieve new
initiatives they must actively involve employees that are most affected by the change through every
process to help maintain and improve performance. Therefore, communication, human motivation,
engagement, and recognition are the driving focuses for positive change and performance
improvement. My organization in going through change, which involves the organization to improve

Bottled Water Vs. Cost
Bottled Water Versus Cost According to The Water Project, Bottles used to package water take over
1,000 years to bio degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80%
of all single use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter ( Bottled Water is Wasteful ). This
fact is not the only reason I believe that bottled water does not outweigh its costs. Although statistics
show that bottled water is efficient, there are many reasons to believe otherwise. As aforementioned,
there are explanations to believe that bottled water does outweigh its repercussions. Thomas J. Lauria,
author of In Defense of Bottled Water , states, Bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water
is not accessible ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). In this article, Lauria states that bottled water is a
topic of great interest. He goes on to discuss that in the United States, Adults consume 450 calories a
day from beverages and sixty eight percent of those twenty years old and older are classified as
overweight or obese, bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible,
preferred, or convenient ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). Sure, this is fact and definitely a benefit to
bottled water. Lauria continues to say that if bottled water is not offered then people will be more
likely to choose soda, juices, or options similar to those. He says that banning bottled water will urge
people to consume unhealthy beverages because

The friend group I made decided not to be friends with me anymore because my ex boyfriends new girlfriend did not like my presence when I was around. Basically, she made my life a living hell, and my so called best friends did not even look me in the face when I walked by. That is when I knew it was time for a major change in my life. After this experience I learned a lot about myself. For example, I was discouraged by this particular situation; however, this experience made me realize how strong and independent I am. Attending Fairfield University was not a mistake, it was a life lesson that made me learn new qualities about myself, and helped shape not only my identity, but my life into something great and ... • 3. A Comparison of Love in Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest... The Phenomenon of Love in Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest We know from the very opening scene of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet s love will end in tragedy. We may wonder why Miranda and Ferdinand in The Tempest do not end up with the same fate as Romeo and Juliet. Both couples are from opposing political families. Both couples are enraptured with their lovers. Why then does Romeo and Juliet end with their death s and the Tempest end with Miranda and Ferdinand s marriage plan? In this paper I will argue that according to Shakespeare reason needs to guide the souls of lovers to avoid tragedy and find bliss. In both cases we can see the passions of love between the lovers clouding their reason. In both plays Shakespeare has a councillor, or mentor, for each couple. In Romeo and Juliet this mentor is Friar Laurence and in The Tempest it is Prospero. Because of the nature of the phenomenon of love, it seems Shakespeare feels that both young couples need this mentor as a source of reason and advice to help guide them through their passions. Both mentors warn the couples against letting passion guide their souls. Both mentors do seem genuinely concerned with the pairing and the good of the lovers and those connected to them. Most importantly the mentors try to act as reason for the lovers while the are caught up in desire. These mentors are one way that reason ought to guide the souls of lovers. Neighbour noise could be lessened if people and companies were more considerate about noise. If houses and other buildings were built with a view to lessening sounds coming from the building there would be less noise. If quieter vehicles were designed it might just lessen the constant hum of traffic. Some countries use quiet road surfaces and these have proved successful in abating noise pollution. • 7. The Real Estate Appraisal Process Real Estate Appraisal Process Executive Summary The real estate appraisal process is a process that affects nearly everyone who lives in a home. Most people do not have the funding to purchase a home outright and must rely on financing to purchase their homes. Banks require that a real estate appraisal be conducted to determine what the market value of a property is so they know how much the property is worth as collateral for the loan. Therefore the appraisal serves as the basis for factors such as determining a fair market price, how much collateral a property can offer a lender, or in some cases even how much a property should be able to earn in income in a best use scenario. This report will outline the basic steps of evaluating the value of property as well as discuss some of the considerations surrounding the appraisal process in general. Three Approaches to Value There are three primary routes to establishing a real estate property values and these methods differ significantly. The most common for residential real estate is the determination of market value or the sales comparison approach. This method utilizes sales data to determine what other similar properties in the local market have sold for. Another method of determining value is through a cost approach which is more typical in new construction. For example, when a contractor builds a new house or structure they might charge for the materials and labor that was used plus some amount of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before the concept of Object Oriented development was introduced, programs were written as a long piece of code, often with all the data and variables defined in one place and all the logic in another. • 13. Taxing Taxation And The Tax System In the United States, taxing is a large source of funding for many programs. Taxes are instituted to all U.S. citizens by the government for government programs. Without taxes roads, buildings, public services, and much more would not be accessible to everyone. Yet, as simple as a tax sounds, there are several different qualifications and standards that make it more complicated (Weigant). There are several different tax systems, only two used in the United States: regressive and progressive taxation. Regressive taxation is a tax system where the proportion of income paid in taxes decreases as one s income increases. Progressive taxation is a tax system where individuals or families that have a higher percentage of income will pay more in taxes. Not only does the tax dollars increase, but the tax rates also increases. In conjunction with these tax systems, there is also a proportional tax, which means all individuals or families pay the same rate of income despite their income (Roach). Within these tax systems are various types of taxes imposed by the United States government. In 1913, the sixteenth amendment legalized the first income tax proposed by the federal government that was levied on wages and salaries. Before the Civil War, the social system promoted the belief that blacks wouldn t get return on their time spent in higher education. Brown and Ricard (2007) noted that most North institutions were reluctant to allow black enrollment in colleges and universities, and in the South, where slaveholder s were still powerhouse businessmen, slaves would never be allowed to become more educated than their owners. Effectively, they were having white southerners pay for the education of people they once owned as property, and had the right to receive what most whites in the region hadn t had available previously. According to Anderson (n.d.), the Reconstruction Era (1877) presented a unique problem for black professionals. Although more blacks were becoming qualified for educational and employment opportunities, the job demand shifted to industrial needs. For black leaders, having to get industrial training instead of a broader, more useful education was a beneficial short term answer for employment. The primary advocate for industrial training was Booker T. Washington. Washington, educated at the Tuskegee Institute located in Alabama, expressed publicly that manual labor will be more beneficial to individuals because that was the type of work available (Anderson, n.d.). On the opposite side of Washington s argument for occupational training was W. E. B. Du Bois. American Beauty Film Analysis American Beauty, directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball, explores the Burningham family s projection of a perfectly normal lifestyle or the ideal American family portrayal. This film is about how everything is not as it seems behind closed doors. As the storyline progresses the film adheres to multiple genre codes and conventions to deepen the story arc, this is known as Genre Hybridity as it refers to two or more established genre s through storyline, etc. (REF TO TEXTBOOK) American Beauty is a hybrid genre text because it conforms to more than one genre this being romance, satire and drama through formal elements such as narrative and screen aesthetic. This can also be further proved by examples of single/hybrid genre texts like The Notebook (2004, Nick Cassavetes), Fight Club (1999, David Fincher) and Bold and the Beautiful (1987 , William J Bell). http://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/1213628.pdf?acceptTC=true Many major box office hits in today s day an age contain comedy, witty one liner s, major plot twists but mostly romance. The romance genre has become a booming success in the film industry as of late 2000 s. (REF) The genre is difficult to define but can be described as the development of love between characters as a main narrative (REF). This can be shown by the massive success of the iconic film, The Notebook grossing in at $115, 603, 229 worldwide. (REF) The film is set around two characters falling in love, therefore falling under the romance genre. One of the conventions of a romance film is forbidden love, this is shown throughout the Notebook between the two main protagonists and is also shown in the movie American Beauty. In American Beauty the protagonist, Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) becomes infatuated with his daughter s best friend, Angela Hayes (Mena Suvari) this creates tension between the characters as Angela continuously entices Mr. Burnham whilst knowing they can never be together due to the age gap and because of his daughter, it is more of an unnatainable lust, therefore conforming to the forbidden love narrative contained within most romantic films. • 23. Macbeth Movie And Play Comparison Macbeth movie and play comparison paragraph Tragedy is a strong and contradicting event that leaves the victims with catharsis and pity. The audience experiences sympathy towards the culprit because of their reasons into why they fell into the darkness. These same emotions are felt when contrasting the behaviour of Macbeth from the movie and the play. In the movie, Macbeth, by Rupert Goold, the audience is mesmerized to feel less affinity towards Macbeth in contrast to the play because of the differences in the plot, how the characters are developed, and the motifs in this militaristic film(This last point is too specific). To start off, the audience feels less sympathy towards Macbeth in the movie because of the main events being distinctive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are a few snippets that are different from the play but also have a large impact on the plot. This is indicated in the movie when Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have a personal conversation in the change room. Macbeth says, Be innocent of the knowledge dearest chuck, And with thy bloody and invisible hand, cancel and tear to pieces great bond.....but hold thee still; So prithee, go with me (III. Ii. 50 60). With these words, in the movie, he speaks in a frustrated manner, as if he is forcing Lady Macbeth to follow his path into darkness by tenaciously grasping her hand. This creates less sympathy for Macbeth. Another significant difference in the movie was when Lady Macduff and her sons and daughters get assaulted by the murders. Macbeth is also present in that scene and he himself finishes the cruel act as he reveals his dagger from his belt. Nevertheless, in the play, Macbeth remains in his castle and calls upon the murderers to finish his dirty work. Therefore, these small differences in the plot including Macbeth s strange behaviour shown in the movie are far more brutal and he is shown less compassionate towards the ... Depiction Of The Berlin Wall The Depiction of the Berlin Wall and the Relation to its Historical Importance The Berlin Wall, built in August of 1961, was a physical symbol of the division between East and West Germany. After World War II, East Germany, also known as the German Democratic Republic, constructed a wall that remained an indication of the divide of Germany for almost thirty years. The purpose of this barrier was to separate democratic West Germany from communist East Germany. During the Cold War, crossing this concrete wall was not an easy task, and it most likely led to punishment and death. The novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, written by John le Carré, illustrates the tasks of West European spies during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall played a key role throughout the Cold War, thus le Carré wrote about crossing the Wall in his book. The two parts from the novel that will be analyzed contain descriptions of characters attempting to crossing the Wall. The novel begins with the death of Karl Riemeck. Karl, a British spy, was trying to escape East Berlin and cross over into West Berlin before being shot. The second event occurs toward the end of the novel. • 43. Analysis of The Romantic Elements In Sleepy Hollow In the novel Sleepy Hollow, by Peter Lerangis, several elements of the Romantic period of literature are evident. Themes carry throughout the novel that suggest a strong Romantic influence upon the text. The story is rich in colorful figurative language and contains a spell binding plot that leaves the reader feeling very satisfied. In the midst of such an enchanting story are the Romantic themes, such as a deep appreciation of nature in conjunction with the condemnation of city life, exaltation of emotion over reason along with the defiance of conventional rules and traditions, and interest in local folk/ethnic culture, while providing the reader with plenty of attention to the supernatural. Each of these elements combines to create a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is ironic that for the duration of the beginning of the novel, Crane refuses to allow anyone to speak of such theoretically impossible tales as the tale of the Headless Horseman. However, after seeing the beast for himself, he is pleading with the people of the town that they must believe [him], and that he can assure all of them of the visual contact he made with a horseman. A dead one. Headless! (Lerangis 66). With his newfound faith in the credibility of the legends around the hollow, Ichabod decides that all of the logic and reason he had previously relied on are of no use to him. It is ironic that one night s events have changed his views on reasoning so quickly. Nearing the novel s end, Ichabod burns all of his ledgers and papers that had held his knowledge over the past several years. In doing so, it is apparent that he has accepted the fact that sense and knowledge had betrayed him in Sleepy Hollow (Lerangis 125). Ichabod s sense and knowledge are personified in this passage to show the reader that two ideals which he had held so close to heart and high in regard had proved to be inadequate. This further exaggerates the Romantic ideals of the power of emotion over all reason and logic. Along with this newfound reliance on emotion rather than reason is a defiant quality of all formal rules and traditions. All of the other authoritative figures in New York shun ... • 44. Advancements in Prosthetic Limbs CHAPTER 1 Introduction Prosthesis is a term used for replacing a human body part which has been damaged or cut accidently with an artificial one. Hybrid prosthetic limb is a combination of mechanical and electrical circuit in which a controller gives command to electrically driven motor for the gripper opening and closing. Signal for the gripper opening or closing is acquired from the other shoulder movement. A strap on the shoulder is tied to a string which switches on or off the limit switch to give a trigger signal. This trigger signal actuates the motor in the gripper to perform open or close operation. In the past few years prototype has been going under many modifications. Last year it was completed but few flaws were there. Spring Mechanism was used by previous degree but it was not reliable as due to excess use spring lost its elasticity and could not be used for triggering. Spring mechanism was also not aesthetically good. A lot of aesthetics was to be done. To cater for this problem we used limit switch for efficient triggering and made compact circuitry using 8 pin controllers and added much to aesthetics of limb. Literature Review Prosthesis is a term used for replacing a human body part which has been damaged or cut accidently with an artificial one. Earliest users of prosthesis were Ancient Egyptians. Due to war injuries they used prosthetic limbs to look complete. A prosthetic toe was found on a 3000 years old mummy. An ancient Greek historian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Mozart s Effect On The Theory Of The Mozart Effect 1. What is the problems being studied The problem being studied is whether listening to Mozart causes an increase in IQ scores. Several researchers have made this claim, yet others have not been able to replicate the experiment. 2. What is the authors hypothesis Steel, Ball Runk (1997) sought to test the theory of the Mozart effect based on the study completed by Rauscher, Shaw Ky (1993). The authors hypothesis predicted that if the Mozart effect enhances spatial reasoning tasks, then listening to Mozart s music should enhance the participant s ability to complete the backwards digit span task. 3. How was the hypothesis developed The authors reviewed several previously published studies on the subject of the Mozart Effect. 4. How does this study relate to the problem Rauscher et al specified that an appropriate task would involve not just spatial recognition but should incorporate spatial and temporal transformation, which was the basis for the dependent measure of backwards digit span task. If listening to Mozart was proven to improve performance, then the participant s performance on the backwards digit span task should improve after listening to Mozart. 5. What type of research design did Steele et al. use This research followed the empirical research method of a true experiment since it contained the following critical features: the independent variable is a manipulated variable under the researcher s control; the researcher uses random assignment to ... • 46. Hairtyle Definition Proportion is the comparative relationship of one thing to another. A well chosen hairstyle can create the illusion of better proportion. It is essential when designing a hairstyle to take into account the client s body shape and size. Challenges in body proportion become more obvious if the hair form is too small or too large. A general guide for classic proportion is that the hair should not be wider than the center of the shoulders, regardless of the body structure. Proportion is also defined as any portion or part in relation to the whole. No one certain feature or style produces beauty but rather the relationship or harmony created when all components come together into a total image. Why does a hairstyle, for example, look great on one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many have a side of the face that appears heavier. Many have one eye that is slightly smaller or one flare of the nose that is slightly larger. And so, adaptability becomes the first design consideration. During your client consultation, take the time to make notations of the asymmetry to the face. If we design the hair towards the low side of the face, we will accentuate it. If we duplicate the head form with either fullness or the lack thereof, we emphasize it. Feel the bones of the head and take note of the growth patterns in the outer and inner perimeters. Remember that the outer perimeter creates the strongest influence to the features. Be very careful about the hair that touches the face. Will it point to an unflattering feature, such as a pointed nose? If there is a protrusion of the frontal bone, the fringe area will lift and dry shorter than anticipated. We have found that working with two mirrors is of tremendous benefit: one for the frontal view and one for the profile. Watch that you do not accentuate a poor profile with an extension in that area. The mirrors will tell you things that the eye cannot see directly. In addition, using a haircutting chair gives the best view of the back and sides of the head because you are looking directly into them. If you are looking down at the hairline, your vision is altered. (No, it is not for your feet; although that is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lester Pearson and John Diefenbaker are two of countless individuals who have put this advice to action. These two influential Prime Ministers have made multiple important changes to Canada and the world. Despite having different goals and priorities, both Prime Ministers have improved the lives of many and are considered important in Canadian history. Though John Diefenbaker has made numerous contributions that benefited the country, Lester Pearson made extensive and constructive changes that not only bettered Canada, but that also shaped our future and our identity, making him the more significant Prime Minister. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of Pearson s goal was to strengthen relationships between French and English Canadians. On April 21 1963 when Quebec separatists placed a bomb in a Canadian army recruiting office killing a janitor, Pearson called for a royal commission to investigate bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada. From the recommendations made during the royal commission, Pearson created the Official Languages Act, which states that federal services such as federal courts and government ministries, must be offered in both English and French. This makes him significant, because bilingualism in Canada still exists today and is still an important part of our culture. On the other hand, Diefenbaker s Bill of Rights got replaced in 1984, and none of his contributions reflect Canada s culture or identity the way Pearson s does. Though Canada is often regarded as the United States little brother , one thing that differentiates Canada from the US is their free health care system. Medicare, Canada s universal health insurance, is only one of the changes Pearson introduced to Canada s welfare state. Pearson also established the Canada Pension Plan in 1966 to support retired citizens, as well as the Canada Assistance Plan which funded welfare programs for the disabled and injured. At the time, Canada had a strong economy, making additions such as the Canada Student Loans Program and increased funding for university research possible. Not only did ... • 50. Bottled Water Vs. Cost Bottled Water Versus Cost According to The Water Project, Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that over 80% of all single use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter ( Bottled Water is Wasteful ). This fact is not the only reason I believe that bottled water does not outweigh its costs. Although statistics show that bottled water is efficient, there are many reasons to believe otherwise. As aforementioned, there are explanations to believe that bottled water does outweigh its repercussions. Thomas J. Lauria, author of In Defense of Bottled Water , states, Bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). In this article, Lauria states that bottled water is a topic of great interest. He goes on to discuss that in the United States, Adults consume 450 calories a day from beverages and sixty eight percent of those twenty years old and older are classified as overweight or obese, bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible, preferred, or convenient ( In Defense of Bottled Water ). Sure, this is fact and definitely a benefit to bottled water. Lauria continues to say that if bottled water is not offered then people will be more likely to choose soda, juices, or options similar to those. He says that banning bottled water will urge people to consume unhealthy beverages because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
