2. INTRODUCTION
• Philip Cortelyou Johnson (July 8, 1906 – January 25, 2005)
was an influential American architect.
• In 1930, he founded the Department of Architecture and
Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and
later (1978), as a trustee, he was awarded an American
Institute of Architects Gold Medal and his first Pritzker
Architecture Prize, in 1979.
• He was a student at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
• Johnson died in his sleep while at the Glass House retreat.
• He showed more interest in style and he will always be
remembered as a stimulator of ideas.
• Philip Johnson’s buildings were luxurious in materials,
including expensive interior spaces, with the classical sense
of symmetry and elegance.
3. WORKS
His prominent works include:
Johnson House, "The Glass
House", New Canaan,
Connecticut (1949)
Seagram Building, New York
City, New York (1956)
The Four Seasons Restaurant,
New York City, New York
(1959)
Turning Point Garden at Case
Western Reserve University,
Cleveland, Ohio (1996)
The AT&T Building (now
known as SONY Building)
(1984)
4. Glass House
• The Glass House or Johnson house, built in 1949 in
New Canaan, Connecticut, was designed by Philip
Johnson as his own residence.
• It was an important and influential project for
Johnson and for modern architecture. The building is
an essay in minimal structure, geometry, proportion,
and the effects of transparency and reflection.
• The house is an example of early use of industrial
materials such as glass and steel in home design.
• The collection of structures vary between rectangular
and circular. The rectangularity of the Glass House
itself is complemented with a circular brick fireplace.
• The estate includes other buildings designed by
Johnson that span his career.
5. BUILDING DETAILS:
The building is 56 feet (17 m) long, 32 feet (9.8 m) wide and 10½ feet (3.2 m)
high.
The house is mostly hidden from the public view, behind a stone wall .
The kitchen, dining and sleeping areas were all in one glass-enclosed room,
which Johnson initially lived in.
The exterior sides of the Glass House are charcoal-painted steel and glass.
The brick floor is 10 inches above the ground.
The interior is open with the space divided by low walnut cabinets; a brick
cylinder contains the bathroom and is the only object to reach floor to
ceiling.
The house builds on ideas of German architects “In a house of glass, the
views of the landscape are its wallpaper”.
The landscape surrounding the buildings was designed by Johnson and
David Whitney, with manicured areas of gravel or grass, trees grouped in
what Johnson called outdoor "vestibules", and with care taken in the shape
of the slopes and curves of the ground.
Johnson's estate, originally 47-acre (190,000 m2), also includes 13
Modernist structures Johnson built, including the "Brick House" (1949–
1950), which serves as a guest house, the pavilion (1962), Painting Gallery
(1965), sculpture gallery (1970), the study (1980), the ghost house (1982),
the Kirstein Tower (1985) and the gate house ("Da Monsta", 1995).
9. SEAGRAM’S BUILDING
• The Seagram Building is a skyscraper, located in Midtown
Manhattan, New York City.
• HEIGHT: 157 M.
• STOREYS: 38
• It is a classic example of the International Style, the Seagram
Building was designed by Mies Vander Rohe in collaboration with
Philip Johnson.
• Rohe believed that a skyscraper's structure should be visible, so
the architects used decorative bronze beams to accentuate the
structure and to emphasize the height of the Seagram Building.
• An interesting feature of the Seagram Building is the window
blinds.
• The 38-story structure combines a steel moment frame and a
steel and reinforced concrete core for lateral stiffness.
• It was built of a steel frame, from which non-structural glass
walls were hung.
• Part of the interior has a pool and chairs designed by Mies Van
der Rohe.
• Use of expensive quality materials and lavish interior decoration
including bronze, travertine, and marble.
10.
11. TURNING POINT GARDEN
• Built – 1996 in Cleveland, Ohio.
• Turning point is an architecture
composed of 5 sculptural forms
organized around a turning point of a
campus pedestrian path.
• The shape of each approximately 6 m
in height and varying from 1 to 5 m in
width.
• The individual shapes will be
constructed in polyester resin and
fiberglass formed over structurally
reinforced polyurethane foam.
• Night lighting for the project is
similarly other-worldly , utilizing fiber
optic radiating from a central origin,
like moon-light, which illuminate the
interior faces of the structure.
