• Want to express the structure of the
building externally.
• American building code.
• To full fill his idea he used I beams.
(BRONZE)
• Mullions and non structural member .
• It was the most expensive building at that
time $41 million .
• Mies wanted the building to have a
uniform appearance. Mies specified
window blinds which only operated in
three positions – fully open, halfway
open/closed, or fully closed.
• There is a 100 ft. of setback from road
• This creates active, open area called
plaza.
• By this plaza mies showed his building
different from New York morphology .
• It attracts people with its 2 large
fountains and the seating around them.
• Large granite was used at this area.
• "PRIVATELY OWNED PUBLIC SPACES“
• Bronze, marble, lavish interior
martial used.
• Glass used – grey topaz (heat
protectant and good natural light )

• The 38-story structure combines a steel
moment frame and a steel and
reinforced concrete core for lateral
stiffness. The concrete core shear walls
extend up to the 17th floor and diagonal
core bracing (shear trusses) extends to
the 29ht floor.

EXPOSED AND VERY REFINED STRUCTURAL DETAILS
-Barcelona pavilion

• Since the pavilion lacked a real
exhibition space, the building itself
was to become the exhibit.
• Mies got the idea from the FLW
for making the plan and elevation
form joining the different
rectangles and making plan and
elevation nearly same.
MATERIAL
• veneers of marble
• golden onyx
• tinted glass of grey, green and
white, translucent glass
• Let the natural materials speak for
themselves
• Added only black rug and red curtains
• Contrast with one of the yellow walls
• Has political statement as well
• Showing German colours
• Highlighted the unique complexity of
the pavilion.
