The French American Alliance And Connection Is One That
The French American alliance and connection is one that has existed since the founding of the United
States of America. The French lent their support to the American Patriots in the form of supplies and
weapons until they gained full independence from Great Britain. There were even many French
notables directly involved within the Revolutionary War such as Lafayette and Pierre Charles L Enfant
who legitimized the idea of the revolution in Europe(1). The French also gained a lot from their
alliance, as they not only took inspiration from the American Revolution and Constitution, and
completely restructured their government and society shortly afterwards. Both countries wanted more
rights, equal representation, and more comprehensive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, it is the way that votes are translated into seats in parliament or other areas of
government such as presidency (3). It is from here, where the differences in political systems between
the United States and France begin to form. In the history of the 20th century there are basically three
types of established democratic regimes; presidential, parliamentary and a mix of both. Though France
is semi presidential and America only presidential, they both work best for their respective socio
political contexts.
Historically, France has had a much harder and rockier road to established democracy than America.
France s government has been through many phases characterized as the Five Republics. The
constitution of the Fifth Republic (which is in place today) was drawn up several weeks after Gen.
Charles de Gaulle was invested as the last prime minister of the Fourth Republic. The new
constitution, which was adopted by an 80 percent vote in a popular referendum held in September
1958, was tailor made for de Gaulle. It contained much of what the past four republics had such as
both a president and prime minister, as well as a bicameral legislature in the form of the National
Assembly and the Senate(4). It is important to note here that France has both a president and a prime
minister thus making the Head of Government and Chief of Staff two separate roles, respectively. This
is what makes France a semi presidential system

Daniel Orozco s Orientation
The short story, Orientation by Daniel Orozco will leave the reader with many questions. Think about
a horror film. Is there always killing or ghosts? Not always. In this short story we are introduced to a
different type of a horror. A horror in the way of control, inhumane thoughts, actions, and, even
invading privacy. This story goes into the personal lives of its characters and explains their home lives,
who they are in love with, and even one of the characters is expressed as a serial killer. This

of telling the new employer that they don t have much freedom, and that the company will have

This story explains Amanda is physically harmed by her husband at home who is a lawyer. No one is
supposed to know this, but they do. At the end of her story it says if you let on, you may be let go . I
believe that they reuse this saying to explain that they know too much information, but aren t willing
to help their fellow employees. They are hiding horrifying details from the public, instead of helping
the cause. During the story of Kevin Howard, the serial killer, everyone knows the horrifying details
of his murders, but aren t threatened by him because he only goes after strangers . They are covering
for him and the truth behind who he really is. These stories express the horror into people s lives.
But, more importantly the control that this company has over its employees. They make the new
employee aware of the secret lives, and make sure that they know if they make a mistake, or tell, they
will regret it. They will regret it in the way of losing their job. But, also I feel like this is their way of
telling the new employee that they will find out everything about you. They will dig into your life and
find your secrets. It relates to real life

Achilles Vs Odysseus
ODYSSEUS VS. ACHILLES: WHO IS THE BETTER MAN?
When considering the question Who is the better man? It is necessary to find the similarities that exist
between the two men who are being compared, (i.e. Odysseus and Achilles) of which there are mainly
three. The first one being that they are both Greek men, the second one being that they are both
heroes, and the third one being that they are both leaders. Odysseus is the better man because he better
fits the role of an Ancient Greek man, he better fits the role of a hero, and he better fits the role of a
leader.
In Ancient Greece, the concept of Arete (moral virtue) was highly valued, Arete was the central ideal
of all Greek culture. 1 Arete was considered one of the key elements that an Ancient Greek man
(especially a nobleman or a hero) should possess, it was the ability to ...make his hands keep his head
against enemies, monsters, and dangers of all kinds, and to come out victorious. 2 To use a
paraphrastic definition of moral virtue according to Aristotle in Book 2 of the Nicomachean Ethics,
moral virtue is the ability to inherently know that which is right from that which is wrong. Odysseus
showed that he possessed the quality of Arete throughout The Odyssey, the prime examples of which
being in his motivations for returning home. Firstly, the great love he bore for his wife, Penelope, and
his son, Telemachus, and secondly, the duty which he felt to his people as their ruler. Both the idea of
family and the great

Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience
In Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience , Thoreau makes the claim that the best form of
government is a government that doesn t govern at all. Thoreau s paper pushes for the people to begin
following the will of their conscience rather than blindly and foolishly follow the unjust idea of
majority rule . Throughout the paper Thoreau makes a point of stating that majority rule is simply the
will of the upper class being forced into action over the rights and wills of the poorer minority. This
paper openly criticizes and condemns many institutions and policies of the American National
government. Because Thoreau wrote this paper during the Mexican American War he uses in it, in
addition to slavery, to reinforce his statement of all political decisions merely being the wills of the
strongest citizens put into action. For the purpose of this assignment the paper has been divided into
three significant parts, Thoreau did not have these divisions. In the third part of Thoreau s paper he
begins writing about his own acts of civil disobedience . He moves from his discussion of his night in
jail, talked about in the second part, to his various reasons for accepting or refusing to pay certain
taxes. From here Thoreau continues to state that he is not sure how long he can maintain his resolve to
deny the government, stating that he is in constant search of a reason to follow its laws. Thoreau then
explains that the reason he did not follow the conventional paths of reform is

Battle Of Normandy Research Paper
World War II was a very horrific period of time. Men displayed great courage, great ideas as well as
national pride. Many people had died during this battle however they knew it was worth the fight
because if the Allies won, it would be the turning point of the war; therefore, this gave them every
reason to fight harder. The battle of Normandy was the most significant battle of WWII. It was the
most significant because it came with a lot of difficulties, it was one of the largest military assults in
history, and it ended WWII. Keeping all things in mind, the Battle of Normandy gave much
significance throughout history. On June 6, 1944, the allies invade Western Europe in the largest
amphibious attack in history. This battle lasted from June 1944 to August 1944 and made a huge
impact on the war. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the end of June, allies had seized the vital port of Cherbourg and they had landed about 850,000
men and 150,000 vehicles in Normandy. After continuing their march across France, the allies reached
Seine river. As a result of the battle, the Germans were removed from Northwestern France and they
concluded the battle of Normandy. Even though the Battle of Normandy was over, it left great effects
on the rest of the world and history, the allies had made their way throughout Germany while also
pushing the rest out. Shortly after reaching Seine river, the Allies prepare to enter Germany to meet up
with the soviet troops whom of which were coming in from the East side of Germany. Things began to
get tough for the Nazis, and all in all, it prevented Hitler from sending troops from France to build up
his Eastern front against the soviets. By May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany finally surrendered and a week
later, and Hitler had committed suicide. Multiple reasons throughout this excerpt give great excuses to

Compromises Of 1850
The 1850s were a time of attempted compromise when compromise was no longer possible. The
Union was becoming divided through many events in the time leading into the Civil War. The North
and South had too many hostilities to account for. Socially, the North and the South could not stand
what the other would do or say with anything. Politically, the government was completely divided and
undecided. And economically, the South began to prosper as the North began to struggle. Thus, during
the 1850s, socially, politically, and economically there was not any compromise that could fix the
problems beginning to occur. In the 1850s, the North and South could not agree on anything and were
in constant disagreements. In 1850, Henry Clay created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This made the south feel that slavery was okay since they took care of their slaves providing them
food, clothing, and shelter. This would make the slavery issue more undecided since it seemed
humanely correct. It would create a more difficult way to compromise since they all knew it was
wrong, but there were also rights of it. The literature made the compromise almost impossible to be
agreed upon since the reasons were so indecisive towards if slavery was correct or wrong. Another
issue also created stir in the country and that was Harper s Ferry. Harper s Ferry was when John
Brown captured an idea of arming and freeing slaves. He thought slaves would help, but he was
wrong. He fought with the army, captured, tried, and hung. The North condemned the violence but the
South did not believe them and saw Brown s raids as final proof the North s true intentions, to use
slave revolts to destroy the south. This showed that there would not be any more compromise to go
over since the South felt they knew exactly what was happening and wouldn t take anything for an
answer. The countries people were fighting and there was nothing to do. On the other hand, politicians
were in an uproar on what should be done and could not come to a solution for anything. The
government had become divided into two over the problems that were being started in the country.
One of the first incidents was the

God Of Carnage Analysis
God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza is centered upon two upper class couples who come together to
discuss a fight between their boys. Through this meeting, they become their children fighting, causing
absolute chaos and carnage of the situation. All of them lose their objective in the end of wanting to
solve the problem of their boys and to be the most civilized, powerful couple in the situation.
Specifically Annette, played by junior Sarah Cushman, ultimately loses her battle of maintaining a
civilized demeanor due to the killing of Veronica and Michael s hamster, her husband s work related
calls, and drunkenly listening to Veronica about being a phony when emotions were already at their
peak. One of the first conversations is about Michael getting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

At this time, Veronica insulted Henry, Annette and Alan s son, and, in turn, Annette stood up for her
son. She was then called a phony by the other couple, prompting her to leave. As Alan was not paying
attention, per usual, she grabbed the tulips and beat him with them, bawling about how it is the worst
day of her life, too. At this point, she has lost all civility and power. She embarrassed herself and
nothing was solved with the meeting. Cushman stuck with her given circumstances so well by the
point. She was defensive of her child, her husband lacked the attention and care to deal with the
situation, she was drunk which caused her emotions to escalate, and she knew she had not been civil.
Cushman allowed the audience to see the defeat of Annette. There were many more moments when
Annette failed to reach her super objective, but the fate of the hamster, the destruction of Alan s cell
phone, and her reaction to being called a phony all were major points in losing civility and represented
her downfall into causing carnage. Her downfall was clearly articulated by Sarah Cushman and overall
every point of outrageous activity was justified by playing into the given

The Unknown Citizen By Auden
The Unknown Citizen, written by W. H. Auden, is a poem that describes a man who lived a life most
people would see as ideal. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to do,
which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Some may see
the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because he did exactly
what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making a change,
the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Auden s poem can be seen from two
perspectives: the man who lived an ideal life that many people sought to have or the man who lived an
unfulfilling, ordinary life which caused him to blend in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
W. H. Auden s poem, The Unknown Citizen, is a great example of this because one can find at least
two meanings within the poem. One person could see the poem as a description of a perfect man while
someone else could see the poem as a message to be unique and make a change in the world. The man
in the poem fulfilled society s expectations, but at the same time, the man may not have had a
fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. Other readers may
discover their own meanings or explanations of the poem. Overall, the speaker in The Unknown
Citizen describes the life of an unknown man, but the reader must decide the message behind being

Compare And Contrast To Kill A Mockingbird And The Silver...
Many books and stories demonstrate the maturing of children by experiencing what life beyond
childhood is and how that affects their relationships and behavior. The stories To Kill a Mockingbird
and the Silver Star best show the effect of growing up through experiencing the realities of life. To
Kill a Mockingbird shows the maturity of a young girl named Scout who lives during the Great
Depression when her father takes the job of defending a black man. Even though The Silver Star does
not take place during the depression it still shows the maturity of two girls (Liz and Bean) when they

Although, they have this ideology, the Silver Star and To Kill a Mockingbird have two different
themes. The Silver Star shows a theme of courage and what it involves. It demonstrates the theme
when Bean and her sister stand up to a powerful mill owner: Maddox. The story also uses symbolism
to express the theme with the Silver Star, a medal that Bean s father had earned. It is used in the title to
represent the courage that the girls had to face throughout the book. The story shows what Bean
thought a Silver Star that her father received from war represented and thought that her sister had
deserved the star because of the bravery that she showed. In chapter 56 of the book, it states, I felt no
right to earn it (the silver star). Liz certainly had, not just for everything she d gone through but for
protecting me. This shows the bravery that Bean thought towards her sister and how it expresses the
theme. The story To Kill a Mockingbird, although, shows a theme that expresses innocents. This is
expressed in the book when a black man is put on trial for crimes that he did not commit, but was at
court because of the racism from the town. It also shows innocence with a character, Arthur Radley
that the town feared for rumors based on him, but were later proven false during the book. This shows
that the character was innocent, but people still feared him. The story, like the Silver Star, uses
symbolism through the title: To Kill a Mockingbird, in the story to portray the theme. The novel states,
Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit em, but remember it s a sin to kill a Mockingbird. This
shows how something that is innocent like a Mockingbird should not be killed. The themes that the
two novels depict, show the maturity of the characters in the story and what they learn throughout the

Body Temperature Lab Report
Sex steroids such as progesterone control reproductive function as well as influencing body
temperature1. Production of progesterone is low prior to ovulation, with granulose cells producing
small amounts. Corpus luteum produces large amounts of progesterone during the Luteal phase.
Progesterone is known to stimulate strong negative feedback. Due to this reason, it is the main
ingredient in contraceptive pills, as it elicits strong negative feedback throughout the menstrual cycle
preventing LH surge, thus preventing ovulation. During the luteal phase females experience higher
body temperature due to high levels of progesterone, and lower body temperature during low levels of
progesterone2. Thus, cyclic variation may demonstrate different pattern in females taking the

American Civil Society On The Iranian Nuclear Deal
Introduction
In examining the impact of American civil society on the Iranian nuclear deal, it is absolutely critical
to recognize that, in historical perspective, the American population has had very little impact on
foreign policy. As Almond asserts, the American population has typically viewed politics as a
phenomenon that ends at the water s edge, and has consequently participated only minimally in
debates over foreign affairs. Noting that discussions of foreign policy have not historically been
prominent within American civil society and that the parties have not truly sought to socialize voters
on the basis of foreign policy derived cleavages, Almond is thus pointing to a context wherein the
American political system is not one in which civil society has historically mobilized itself so as to
support or oppose given elements of national foreign policy. With Almond also proposing that
Americans attitudes towards these foreign policy phenomena tend to be simplistic and often premised
on incorrect factual information, Almond thus makes it clear that American civil society does not
typically engage with foreign policy, and largely lacks the capacity for doing so. The work of
Converse goes further and suggests that the American party system, historically aligned on the
traditional conservative liberal dichotomy, is not one that has created a consistent space for civil
societal discussion of foreign policy issues. Rather, and given that this dichotomy has socialized the

Shakespeare has written three different types of genre in his plays. One of these is his Tragedies like
Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet . Another genre he writes within is Comedy, an example of which is
Much Ado About Nothing .
The last genre Shakespeare uses is History; an example of this is Henry V where he bases this play on
actual historic events. The play is set around the year 1420 and King Henry is faced with the difficult
decision, whether to attack France or not. There are a lot of incidents in this play where Shakespeare
exaggerates the qualities/attributes of King Henry; he changes the way we think of King Henry. The

This is one of the facts that were distorted by Shakespeare, in reality it was quite the opposite.

town.
In Act 5 Scene 2 Shakespeare shows Henry as charming when he manages to win over Katherine; the
princess of France. Upon that I kiss your hand, and I call you my queen.
This implies that Henry is charming, as he was able to win over the princess of France and have her
hand in marriage.
There are two scenes which Shakespeare shows Henry as an excellent speaker . First of which is in
Act 3 Scene 1, where Henry and his army are attacking Harfleur.

My Cultural Paper On Machu Picchu Peruvian Restaurant
One of the countries in South America is Peru, home to part of the Amazon rainforest and also to
Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city that was set high in the Andes Mountains. The
civilization was renowned for its sophisticated dry stone walls, and so is Machu Picchu Peruvian
Restaurant. This restaurant has captured the essence not only of the ancient civilization, but of the
culture of Peru as well. Though this is a restaurant, they teach their customers about Spanish culture,
and they also contributes to both their immediate community and Hispanic community. So in other
words, this restaurant isn t just a restaurant, but a Peruvian cultural experience. First of all, the reason
why I chose to do my Cultural Paper on Machu Picchu Peruvian Restaurant is because to me (as well
as the community, I m sure), this place isn t only in existence to sell food, but to allow its customers to

restaurant embodied Peru to the T . The dishes on the menu were all authentic, Peruvian

The War With Mexican American War
The war with Mexico is long remembered as an episode, and by no means is it an unimportant one.
With the events that led up to its happening, from the Manifest Destiny to the disputes on territory, it
has severely marked the United States. American historians regard the Mexican American war as the
foulest blot on our national honor . (sfmuseum.org) Unethical actions were taken gain Mexican
territory. Polk and his hunger for land drove him to find some devious way to fight a war with Mexico.
His belligerent attitude in regard to this war was the foulest blot on our national honor. However, as
one studies the events that led to it, was it an unprovoked act of aggression? Or did the US
unjustifiably lure Mexico into one of the bloodiest wars on American soil?
The O Sullivan article on Manifest Destiny sparked an initial interest amongst the American people.
The idea that it was the United States destiny to expand across the continent became an ardent hope.
America had a strong Christian belief that God had intended this for the country. The need for more
land became vital as an increasing amount of immigrants flocked to the country each year. As the US
gained more land, they steadily began to approach the western part of the continent. At the time, the
United States was half of what it is now. The other half was owned by a country that would soon be
forced into a two year war.
Mexico was once a country half the size of the US. It stretched, as one could say, from coast to

E payment systems are not a novel idea. Electronic money has been used between banks in the form of

Credit cards are currently the most popular payment instrument on the Internet. The first credit cards

of Tibet and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize. Brought up from an unusual childhood, he became
head of the state of Tibet at age 16, and was later forced into exile by the Chinese government. Despite
all the hardship he had to endure he does not give up his fight for freedom and treats all sentiment

Hawaii Doesn t Dance Just Hula Essay
Hawaii Doesn t Dance Just Hula Hip Hop dancing is a revolutionary style that has spread throughout
America for over decades now. Going coast to coast and even over many oceans, especially the
Pacific Ocean in the state of Hawaii. The stereotype that all people in Hawaii are Hawaiians or that the
population lives in grass huts and doesn t know what a mall is, plagues the minds of mainlanders. So it
would be a big surprise knowing that these Hawaiians can be Hip Hop dancers too. The message was
shouted out to the whole nation when Hawaii s first Hip Hop dance crew Hype 5 0 competed on
America s Best Dance Crew season five showcasing their dance abilities against other dance crews
from around the country. Once this message was relayed, Hawaii was put on the Hip Hop map and
even more Hip Hop influence poured into the state with dance competitions being held, Hip Hop
artists increasingly having concerts, and having dancers from Hawaii travel out to the mainland
expressing their talents and not forgetting where they are from. The origins of Hip Hop dancing
occurred in the early 1960 s and comes from various cities within New York. Creating and
incorporating different styles within New York, they were able to construct a diverse culture of
dancing that would soon spread throughout the whole country. With dance styles such as uprock,
breaking, locking, roboting, boogaloo, and popping. Hip Hop dancing over the years improved with

Essay #3 Imagine John Lennon
Who doesn t want to live in a world without peace? Many people use music as a source of happiness
and inner peace, causing many ideas and emotions to surface the mind. A large number of musicians
have gotten their inspiration for creating music from other musicians indicating that music can inspire
itself. John Lennon used to belong to one of the biggest bands in the world known as The Beatles.
Although he had a great life career experience with the Fab Four, he eventually realized it was time
for him (and everyone else) to move on. Post Beatles, John Lennon released his debut solo album,

why he points out he is a dreamer and many types of hopefuls are out there wanting the same results.
The intended audience is anyone. Their social status or economic status status doesn t matter,
everyone deserves peace. A second point of view if the audience did what he said, may be very
different then what many expected. Living in a world of just peace and no bad or evil, is a world
without hope or dreams. Some would say the good evens out the bad and without the bad lie would be

Jewish Death And Burial Practices
Introduction
Burial has long been considered an important component of death; it is the mourners final encounter
with the recognizable, substantial body of the deceased. Every culture has to determine how to deal
with the physical remains of the dead, to find a way to honour their memory, and to go on living in a
society that is now deprived of one of its members. Burial traditions and practices have developed
throughout history and around the world to meet this human need. This paper will examine Jewish
death and burial practices from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and other New Testament accounts, as
well as archaeological evidence from first century Palestine; this evidence, when compared to recent
arguments against the burial of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was also the first of seven days of mourning. This mourning took place publicly, either just
outside the entrance of the tomb, or inside the tomb itself..
Burial in the Jewish nation most commonly occurred in a family tomb, usually a cave located outside
the city proper, and therefore away from where people lived. In the Old Testament, the euphemism for
death, slept with his fathers, references the familial tomb (eg. 1 Kings 2:10; 1 Kings 11:43; 2 Kings
15:7,22,38; 2 Chr. 26:2,23).
The Jewish people in the Old Testament showed respect for the dead by providing them with proper
burials. In Scripture, examples of burial of the dead date back to the days of the patriarchs (Sarah,
Gen. 23; Abraham, Gen. 25, Jacob, Gen. 50), the judges (Tola and Jair, Judg. 10; Ibzan, Elon, and
Abdon, Judg. 12), and the kings, both good and evil (Saul, 1 Sam. 31; David, 1 Kings 2; Manasseh, 2
Kings 21; and Josiah, 2 Kings 23).
In keeping with the Mosaic laws, even executed criminals were to be buried promptly, in order to
avoid defiling the land:
When someone is convicted of a crime punishable by death and is executed, and you hang him on a
tree, his corpse must not remain all night upon the tree; you shall bury him that same day, for anyone
hung on a tree is under God s curse. You must not defile the land that the Lord your God is giving you
for possession. (Deuteronomy 21:22 23, New Revised Standard Version)

Pliny The Elder Summary
INDUSTRY S KNOWLEDGE OF THE HARMFUL EFFECTS
Numerous authors believe that the risks associated with asbestos exposure were known more than
2000 years ago when Greek Geographer Strabo pointed out that slaves who wove asbestos into clothes
developed a sickness of the lung and that a similar observation was also made on asbestos miners, by
Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist.3,9,120 However, Browne et al describes Strabo s and Pliny s
stories to be inaccurate due to mistranslation. He points out that Strabo was referring to arsenic
disulphide, and that Elder Pliny was referring to sulphide of mercury, and not asbestos.121 Regardless
of the accuracy of these anecdotes, there is a myriad of evidence of early knowledge of asbestos s

physician specialized in chest diseases who worked for Travelers Insurance Company, diagnosed

when Dr. Selikoff reviewed Tomplait s X rays and said that his diagnosis of extensive pulmonary
asbestosis is as certain as anything can be in medicine . Asbestos manufacturing companies and their
lawyer similarly, denied knowledge of the association between asbestos exposure and lung disease,
and argued consistently in every lawsuit that this association wasn t known until Selikoff s landmark
article that was published in 1964. It was made conspicuous, however, that literally hundreds of
studies were published in the 1920s and 1930s on the association between asbestos exposure and
asbestosis. Stephenson was also able to compile a bibliography of 86 articles on asbestosis most of
them published before 1938. Another example of the unethical conduct was what Dr. Cooper (an
occupational health professor) said about not being able to have known that a 15% asbestos product
would be unsafe in 1961, and that the early studies conducted in England, were on workers who were
exposed to a lot heavier asbestos dust. Dr. Cooper also referred to a study conducted in 1945 by
Fleisher et al that found low incidence (0.3%) of asbestosis among asbestos pipe covers (3 out of
1074). Despite the low incidence, the authors recommended the use of exhaust ventilation and to keep
the total dust concentration low. In Fleisher s study125, the majority (95%) of workers had been
employed for less than 10 years, way less than the needed latency period to develop the disease. It is

The Sacred Canopy Summary
In his book, The Sacred Canopy: Elements of a Sociological Theory of Religion, Peter L. Berger
details a sociological approach to viewing religion as a human necessity. Berger argues that humans
go through the process of world building in order to create the human specific order they lack
biologically. Berger s theory depends primarily on three key aspects: externalization, objectivation,
and internalization. Through these social and cognitive processes, humans create society, culture, and
ultimately religion. Looking at religion through Berger s sociological lens effectively identifies how
religions and their various beliefs have come to be accepted in our society. In my second visit to the
Islamic Center of San Antonio my aim was to hone in on the most deeply fixed aspects of Islam in an
effort to trace them back through Berger s three stages of world building. For instance, one of the most
striking aspects of members of the Islamic Center of San Antonio is their strict commitment to prayer.
The members I spoke with emphasized the importance of sticking to the Salah (daily prayers plus the
Friday prayer) times. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This strict adherence to the Salah schedule is the result of socialization, which Berger describes as the

Socialization is completed after something is externalized, given objectivity, and then internalized.
Externalization is the continuous creation of both the physical and non physical aspects that make up
society (Berger Religion and World Construction ). Salah times are not much different from most
aspects of Islam in that they are believed to be taught to the people by the Prophet Muhammad who

The Black Walnut Tree
The relationship between the Tree and the family in the poem The Black Walnut Tree by Mary Oliver
is conveyed as harsh and difficult. If they choose to sell the tree then it s assured that the house will be
safe, however, they lose a part of their history. If they do not sell the tree, then they have a chance of
the tree destroying the house, but they are struggling to even pay the mortgage and cannot afford any
more expenses. By the selected spacing of the poem, figurative language, and lyric this relationship
dilemma is conveyed.
By the use of free verse, Oliver is able to space the poem to have greater effect on the reader as well as
to strengthen the meaning of the relationship and dilemma between the family and tree. For instance,
lines 9 to 11, each line is spaced so that is sticks in the mind. No information is lost, meaning, that it is
easier and more relative to see where the argument is going for the reader. Throughout, the poem there

Bomba And Orquestas Influence On American Music

From bomba to plena, Cajun music to swamp pop and zydeco and conjunto and orquesta Tejano to tex

continue to thrive and evolve if it remains organic in its nature. Bomba dates to the colonial period of

Orquestas existed prior to the new movement, but they were toned down from what they were today.
Orquestas commonly consisted of one or two violins and ushered with guitar accompanist. But as new

result was orquestas Tejano. Orquesta tejana was often looked down upon by Mexican nationals, for
downplaying their own cultural heritage and joining the American mainstream, this divided the two
groups. Two such innovators of Orquesta tejana were Armando Marroqoin and Paco Betancourt, these
two formed Ideal records in 1946. Armando would reach national stardom, when he produced Las

The vertical hierarchical structure and authoritarianism in bureaucratic organizations is what distorts
communication, and reduces accountability, responsiveness and commitment towards core activities
(Morris, Farrell, 2007). Instead a flatter hierarchy with decentralized management would be more
favourable. It would be cost efficient as wages would be allocated to fewer levels of management. For
example, Call centres in the US adopted flat hierarchies to achieve minimization in costs (Bozionelos,

ANALYSIS OF ALCE MUNRO S SHORT STORIES
The short story collection of Lives of Girls and Women includes eight chapters through which Munro
goes through the details of women s ordinary life and makes this ordinariness extra ordinary to
confirm that a woman can reach mental maturity through the observation of other women around her
and her vital experience of the events. Munro embedded this fact in the protagonist Del who gains
maturity at the end and becomes a creative writer.
Through the observation of her mother (Addie) who reads a lot and sells encyclopedias, Del finds out
that she behaves like a clown and just pretends to be an intellectual. So she doesn t like her mother s
so much enthusiasm, excitement, aggressiveness and showing off as an intellectual. Women should be
equal to men in the way of acquiring knowledge of the world and books but the way her mother shows
off is not desirable both to Del and to people around her.
Her marginalization as someone not to be listened to or respected is presented as a psychological
danger that accompanies maternity. Her autonomy is also undercut by her daughter s perception of her
as someone who brings derision upon herself (Gault, 2006). In addition, Gualt examines Addie s sense
of intellectuality in this

The Financial Responsibility Of Higher Education
Two years ago, I comfortable raced through the last months of my High School career. However, apart
from imperatively aiming my attention over my studies, I unwittingly turned the rest of my focus on
fiddling matters, which haplessly settled into habits. Instead of reading a book, I settled for a movie;
instead of improving my tennis abilities, I watched others improve theirs; instead of taking a full night
s sleep, I harped my guitar s strings through the night.
As a longed spring often passes, graduation swiftly came and just as swiftly went. I began McHenry
County College with my head raised egotistically high, breezing by the first few weeks of my courses.
I, however, came to learn of the financial responsibility of higher education. With an older brother
transferring to the financially demanding Loyola University in Chicago, I decided to take my less
expensive tuition of my parents shoulders.
I quickly searched for a job, and soon landed one at Covidien (which has recently merged with
Medtronic). Covidien, a factory based medical device manufacturer, became my first job. In the light
of my new position, I was faced with many challenges. First, Covidien required labor intensive work,
work that I had never experienced before, work that nearly broke me my first week. Second, at that
time Covidien only required tenders for their 12 hour night crew, working 36 hours one week and 48
hours the next. The third and most painstaking task I decided to face was to balance a

Compare And Contrast The American Horror Story And The...
American Horror Story and the Amazing World of Gumball Compared Ryan Murphy s anthology
American Horror Story shows a side of evil and darkness that none of us could ever imagine. Ben
Bocquelet s animated TV show The Amazing World of Gumball represents that unordinary, innocent
part of ourselves that we often forget about. In this paper, I will be comparing the similarities and the
differences of the two, drastically different shows. American Horror Story (AHS) has a malevolent,
dystopian view on the environment and those in it, while The Amazing World of Gumball (Gumball)
tries to pull off a more welcoming, friendly stance. AHS tends to focus more on the negatives and the
evil in the world like murder, illegal drugs, alcohol, lying, manipulation, and abuse. The show s story
can be written in some of the bluntest ways as possible. There is no beating around the bush or hiding
under the blanket. Gumball gives a display of happiness and a fantasy of what our childhoods could be
like. The joy and fun of being a child is shown in a way that younger kids tend to overlook. The view
of the show normally comes off as fun, innocent humor. AHS s way of presentation is meant to give
off an antiutopian type of reality to appeal to those who enjoy or find interest in the twisted side of
life. Gumball is animated the way it is to have a stronger appeal to children and give off that vibe of
utopia and being carefree. AHS s characters contain those dark, gloomy characteristics that

  • 2. The French American Alliance And Connection Is One That The French American alliance and connection is one that has existed since the founding of the United States of America. The French lent their support to the American Patriots in the form of supplies and weapons until they gained full independence from Great Britain. There were even many French notables directly involved within the Revolutionary War such as Lafayette and Pierre Charles L Enfant who legitimized the idea of the revolution in Europe(1). The French also gained a lot from their alliance, as they not only took inspiration from the American Revolution and Constitution, and completely restructured their government and society shortly afterwards. In the history of the 20th century there are basically three types of established democratic regimes; presidential, parliamentary and a mix of both. Though France is semi presidential and America only presidential, they both work best for their respective socio political contexts. Historically, France has had a much harder and rockier road to established democracy than America. France s government has been through many phases characterized as the Five Republics. The constitution of the Fifth Republic (which is in place today) was drawn up several weeks after Gen. Charles de Gaulle was invested as the last prime minister of the Fourth Republic. The new constitution, which was adopted by an 80 percent vote in a popular referendum held in September 1958, was tailor made for de Gaulle. It contained much of what the past four republics had such as both a president and prime minister, as well as a bicameral legislature in the form of the National Assembly and the Senate(4). It is important to note here that France has both a president and a prime minister thus making the Head of Government and Chief of Staff two separate roles, respectively. This is what makes France a semi presidential system ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Achilles Vs Odysseus ODYSSEUS VS. ACHILLES: WHO IS THE BETTER MAN? When considering the question Who is the better man? It is necessary to find the similarities that exist between the two men who are being compared, (i.e. Odysseus and Achilles) of which there are mainly three. The first one being that they are both Greek men, the second one being that they are both heroes, and the third one being that they are both leaders. Odysseus is the better man because he better fits the role of an Ancient Greek man, he better fits the role of a hero, and he better fits the role of a leader. In Ancient Greece, the concept of Arete (moral virtue) was highly valued, Arete was the central ideal of all Greek culture. 1 Arete was considered one of the key elements that an Ancient Greek man (especially a nobleman or a hero) should possess, it was the ability to ...make his hands keep his head against enemies, monsters, and dangers of all kinds, and to come out victorious. 2 To use a paraphrastic definition of moral virtue according to Aristotle in Book 2 of the Nicomachean Ethics, moral virtue is the ability to inherently know that which is right from that which is wrong. Odysseus showed that he possessed the quality of Arete throughout The Odyssey, the prime examples of which being in his motivations for returning home. Firstly, the great love he bore for his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, and secondly, the duty which he felt to his people as their ruler. Both the idea of family and the great ... • 5. Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience In Henry David Thoreau s Civil Disobedience , Thoreau makes the claim that the best form of government is a government that doesn t govern at all. Thoreau s paper pushes for the people to begin following the will of their conscience rather than blindly and foolishly follow the unjust idea of majority rule . Throughout the paper Thoreau makes a point of stating that majority rule is simply the will of the upper class being forced into action over the rights and wills of the poorer minority. This paper openly criticizes and condemns many institutions and policies of the American National government. Because Thoreau wrote this paper during the Mexican American War he uses in it, in addition to slavery, to reinforce his statement of all political decisions merely being the wills of the strongest citizens put into action. For the purpose of this assignment the paper has been divided into three significant parts, Thoreau did not have these divisions. In the third part of Thoreau s paper he begins writing about his own acts of civil disobedience . He moves from his discussion of his night in jail, talked about in the second part, to his various reasons for accepting or refusing to pay certain taxes. From here Thoreau continues to state that he is not sure how long he can maintain his resolve to deny the government, stating that he is in constant search of a reason to follow its laws. Thoreau then explains that the reason he did not follow the conventional paths of reform is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Compromises Of 1850 The 1850s were a time of attempted compromise when compromise was no longer possible. The Union was becoming divided through many events in the time leading into the Civil War. The North and South had too many hostilities to account for. Socially, the North and the South could not stand what the other would do or say with anything. Politically, the government was completely divided and undecided. And economically, the South began to prosper as the North began to struggle. Thus, during the 1850s, socially, politically, and economically there was not any compromise that could fix the problems beginning to occur. The literature made the compromise almost impossible to be agreed upon since the reasons were so indecisive towards if slavery was correct or wrong. Another issue also created stir in the country and that was Harper s Ferry. Harper s Ferry was when John Brown captured an idea of arming and freeing slaves. He thought slaves would help, but he was wrong. He fought with the army, captured, tried, and hung. The North condemned the violence but the South did not believe them and saw Brown s raids as final proof the North s true intentions, to use slave revolts to destroy the south. This showed that there would not be any more compromise to go over since the South felt they knew exactly what was happening and wouldn t take anything for an answer. The countries people were fighting and there was nothing to do. On the other hand, politicians were in an uproar on what should be done and could not come to a solution for anything. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to do, which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making a change, the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Many books and stories demonstrate the maturing of children by experiencing what life beyond childhood is and how that affects their relationships and behavior. The stories To Kill a Mockingbird and the Silver Star best show the effect of growing up through experiencing the realities of life. To Kill a Mockingbird shows the maturity of a young girl named Scout who lives during the Great Depression when her father takes the job of defending a black man. Although, they have this ideology, the Silver Star and To Kill a Mockingbird have two different themes. The Silver Star shows a theme of courage and what it involves. It demonstrates the theme when Bean and her sister stand up to a powerful mill owner: Maddox. The story also uses symbolism to express the theme with the Silver Star, a medal that Bean s father had earned. It is used in the title to represent the courage that the girls had to face throughout the book. The story shows what Bean thought a Silver Star that her father received from war represented and thought that her sister had deserved the star because of the bravery that she showed. In chapter 56 of the book, it states, I felt no right to earn it (the silver star). Liz certainly had, not just for everything she d gone through but for protecting me. This shows the bravery that Bean thought towards her sister and how it expresses the theme. The story To Kill a Mockingbird, although, shows a theme that expresses innocents. This is expressed in the book when a black man is put on trial for crimes that he did not commit, but was at court because of the racism from the town. It also shows innocence with a character, Arthur Radley that the town feared for rumors based on him, but were later proven false during the book. This shows that the character was innocent, but people still feared him. The story, like the Silver Star, uses symbolism through the title: To Kill a Mockingbird, in the story to portray the theme. The novel states, Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit em, but remember it s a sin to kill a Mockingbird. This shows how something that is innocent like a Mockingbird should not be killed. • 12. American Civil Society On The Iranian Nuclear Deal Introduction In examining the impact of American civil society on the Iranian nuclear deal, it is absolutely critical to recognize that, in historical perspective, the American population has had very little impact on foreign policy. As Almond asserts, the American population has typically viewed politics as a phenomenon that ends at the water s edge, and has consequently participated only minimally in debates over foreign affairs. Noting that discussions of foreign policy have not historically been prominent within American civil society and that the parties have not truly sought to socialize voters on the basis of foreign policy derived cleavages, Almond is thus pointing to a context wherein the American political system is not one in which civil society has historically mobilized itself so as to support or oppose given elements of national foreign policy. With Almond also proposing that Americans attitudes towards these foreign policy phenomena tend to be simplistic and often premised on incorrect factual information, Almond thus makes it clear that American civil society does not typically engage with foreign policy, and largely lacks the capacity for doing so. The work of Converse goes further and suggests that the American party system, historically aligned on the traditional conservative liberal dichotomy, is not one that has created a consistent space for civil societal discussion of foreign policy issues. Polk and his hunger for land drove him to find some devious way to fight a war with Mexico. His belligerent attitude in regard to this war was the foulest blot on our national honor. Going coast to coast and even over many oceans, especially the Pacific Ocean in the state of Hawaii. The stereotype that all people in Hawaii are Hawaiians or that the population lives in grass huts and doesn t know what a mall is, plagues the minds of mainlanders. So it would be a big surprise knowing that these Hawaiians can be Hip Hop dancers too. The message was shouted out to the whole nation when Hawaii s first Hip Hop dance crew Hype 5 0 competed on America s Best Dance Crew season five showcasing their dance abilities against other dance crews from around the country. Once this message was relayed, Hawaii was put on the Hip Hop map and even more Hip Hop influence poured into the state with dance competitions being held, Hip Hop artists increasingly having concerts, and having dancers from Hawaii travel out to the mainland expressing their talents and not forgetting where they are from. The origins of Hip Hop dancing occurred in the early 1960 s and comes from various cities within New York. Creating and incorporating different styles within New York, they were able to construct a diverse culture of dancing that would soon spread throughout the whole country. With dance styles such as uprock, breaking, locking, roboting, boogaloo, and popping. Hip Hop dancing over the years improved with these base dance styles to grow from. According ... Jewish Death And Burial Practices Introduction Burial has long been considered an important component of death; it is the mourners final encounter with the recognizable, substantial body of the deceased. Every culture has to determine how to deal with the physical remains of the dead, to find a way to honour their memory, and to go on living in a society that is now deprived of one of its members. Burial traditions and practices have developed throughout history and around the world to meet this human need. This mourning took place publicly, either just outside the entrance of the tomb, or inside the tomb itself.. Burial in the Jewish nation most commonly occurred in a family tomb, usually a cave located outside the city proper, and therefore away from where people lived. In the Old Testament, the euphemism for death, slept with his fathers, references the familial tomb (eg. 1 Kings 2:10; 1 Kings 11:43; 2 Kings 15:7,22,38; 2 Chr. 26:2,23). The Jewish people in the Old Testament showed respect for the dead by providing them with proper burials. In Scripture, examples of burial of the dead date back to the days of the patriarchs (Sarah, Gen. 23; Abraham, Gen. 25, Jacob, Gen. 50), the judges (Tola and Jair, Judg. 10; Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon, Judg. 12), and the kings, both good and evil (Saul, 1 Sam. 31; David, 1 Kings 2; Manasseh, 2 Kings 21; and Josiah, 2 Kings 23). In keeping with the Mosaic laws, even executed criminals were to be buried promptly, in order to avoid defiling the land: When someone is convicted of a crime punishable by death and is executed, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse must not remain all night upon the tree; you shall bury him that same day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God s curse. Berger details a sociological approach to viewing religion as a human necessity. Berger argues that humans go through the process of world building in order to create the human specific order they lack biologically. Berger s theory depends primarily on three key aspects: externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Through these social and cognitive processes, humans create society, culture, and ultimately religion. Looking at religion through Berger s sociological lens effectively identifies how religions and their various beliefs have come to be accepted in our society. In my second visit to the Islamic Center of San Antonio my aim was to hone in on the most deeply fixed aspects of Islam in an effort to trace them back through Berger s three stages of world building.
