What is it about human life that makes it valuable? Some people believe that life is valuable even
before birth. Before we are given a name or our gender has been identified, we are valued. As
children, we are taught that we are valuable and that life is valuable. However, what makes human life
valuable? The answer to this question may come from an analysis of the lives of two people; a
fictional character and a real life person, and a comparison to my own personal belief about the value

The Consequentialist theory of Ethical Egoism sets out to prove that the morally right action is one
that aims to maximise one s own self interest. The moral theory runs on the premise that the principle

The director of the film has many different techniques to utilize; actors, camera shots, location,
properties, sound, music, light. Compared to the way John Steinbeck wrote the book, Gary Sinise

I chose the book Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World. As the title suggests, and the
author, Mark Kurlansky, explores, a simple fish, more specifically, cod, has an importance that has
been proven throughout history. The prologue is set in Petty Harbour, a town in Newfoundland and
tells a story of three experienced fishermen, Sam, Leonard, and Bernard. They are participating in the
Sentinel Fishery which was an attempt to help scientists and fishermen work together to measure the

caught at once. From there, bottom dragging became popular and although it was an effective method
of catching a lot of cod at once, it was also damaging to other fish that got caught in the net. In
addition to improved techniques, curing methods advanced and freezing methods were developed.
Technology advancements included the chronometer and telegraph which both improved navigation,
and sonors and spotter aircraft aided in spotting cod schools. Fishing boats advanced from oars and
sails to steam powered to motorships. All of these advancements aided in the overfishing, and
consequently became a hazard. Scientists argue that you can t predict nature and there is no way to tell
if and when, as well as, how long it will take to replenish the codstock. For this reason, I suggest

Drowning in a Sea of Avoidance
Drowning in a sea of avoidance, I needed to save myself from this repetitive behavior that was
tarnishing my social bonds. In the past I was afraid of rejection or criticism in everyway imaginable. I
kept myself from relationships due to my own insecurities, which stemmed from my lack of self
confidents. To confine in a person one must be wiling to show their most vulnerable side, and not
doing so made me have unhealthy relationships with the people around me. Causing me to portray a
false image of myself to escape what others thought of me. These fears and insecurities had leaded me
into a downward spiral of pushing people away.
At a point in life we all suffer from some type of psychological frailty, not everyone is capable of
finding their own way out of darkness that has been created by insecurities. The book Love s
Executioner by Irvin D Yalom, gives insight on those who dealt with conflicts that ultimately
diminished their self esteem. Something good happened and she felt great, one criticism from
someone and she was down for days. It was like trying to keep your house heated with a furnace
thermostat placed to close to the window (Yalom, 221). This was a compelling piece to me because it
unmasked the exact issue of needing justification from others to feel good about myself. Having
control over something that can completely shift your sense of self is necessary to break the cycle of a

forty, people enter the achieving stage according to the developmental psychologist K. Warner Shaie.
In this stage young adults begin to be more focused on making decisions on what to do for the rest of
their lives and whom to form relationships with. These decisions will soon make up the core of their
happiness throughout adulthood. According to the psychologist Erik Erikson, this challenge of
forming relationships is called the intimacy versus isolation stage. Those who are successful in the
stage have no problem in forming intimate relationships and are willing to sacrifice for others. Those
who have a hard time often result to loneliness with a growing fear of relationships. This could be a
result of failure to form an identity for oneself in Erikson s previous stage of identity versus confusion.

The Crusades were a set of wars between the Catholic Church and Muslims. These wars lasted from
1096 A.D. to 1291. The Crusades are known as successful failures because two of the nine crusades
were successful, the First and Third. On November 27, 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade to
help the Byzantine s take back the city of Jerusalem. The First Crusade was led by Raymond of Saint
Gilles, Godfrey of Bouillon, Hugh of Vermandois, and Bohemond of Taranto. From 1096 to 1099, the
Catholics took back Nicea, Jerusalem, Antioch, Edessa, and Tripoli from the Turks. The First Crusade
s goal was to take back the Holy Lands, especially the city of Nicea. The city of Nicea, now modern
day Iznik, Turkey, is fifty five miles, southeast of Constantinople, where the Crusaders are coming
from. After months of fighting, the Seljuk Turks surrendered against the Crusaders, giving Nicea back
to the Catholic Church. After several weeks of war and conflict, Christian knights began to massacre
