Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

1. Most of my energy and free time the past 5 years has been spent on thinking of and practicing new
ways of creative expression. Being able to create a product of any kind imbued with your thoughts
and feelings grants me a sense of relief and satisfaction. It is that exact feeling that has led me to the
decision of applying to study at university. My interest in Creative Media stems from a GCSE taster
session I attended back in 2018, it revealed to me the variety of methods and diversity of subject
matter within the industry. I felt as though I could create something unique and personal to me,
which I wanted a part of. This led me to college to study the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative
Media. Throughout my studies at college, I have gained a lot of useful experience and have been
able to explore my creativity. I’ve also started to form a unique style that I apply to most of the
products I create. One of the projects that really helped me creatively evolve was the music video
project, we were given complete creative freedom and could pick any song we wanted to make a
music video for, in any style we chose. This project is where I truly started to realise the potential for
personal expression and my technical skills. The project demanded efficient and capable
videography and editing skills, good time management and an artistic outlook on product creation.
This task also required an understanding of how to navigate and utilise Adobe Premiere Pro, I had
prior knowledge on the software beforehand but because of the large focus on it in this project my
experience and skills skyrocketed. Handling video and camera equipment in this task was also a
major focus. Another piece of work I created that highlights my creative ability is the horror movie
advertisement posters I made. The task was to formulate an idea for a new unique horror movie. We
were then tasked with creating some form of advertisement for the movie, I created 3 unique but
stylistically consistent print products in a professional and expressive manner. Having to apply my
specific style to 3 products that each possessed a totally different format really tested my ability to
adapt and overcome complicated circumstances in a project. I think the next best step for me is a
university course so that I can further develop and fully realise my place within the creative
production space.
Recently I attended the Aesthetica film festival in York, there were many interesting and insightful
presentations that took place, however the two that resonated with me the most were the interview
and the animation lecture. The interview portion of the festival granted me with a lot of professional
information, it helped me adopt a more refined and experienced way of thinking about film
production, creative processes, and the media industry as a whole. Hearing the answers given by
these accomplished film makers and directors also helped me acquire extremely helpful knowledge
that will transfer perfectly into university. The animation presentation also turned out valuable as it
granted me insight into the different stages of a creative process from an established animation
companies' point of view, the host highlighted the key points of each stage of creation and focused
mainly on how to manage time when it comes to big workloads which will prove valuable in future
University projects. My educational experiences and my dedication towards gaining a true
understanding of the way in which media products such as films, print products etc are crafted make
me a perfect fit for this course as it will allow me to continue to develop my existing foundation of
skills. After University I plan to further pursue a career in the creative media industry, potentially in
filmmaking, film directing or some form of graphic design, this will give me a chance to utilise my
skills acquired from college and university in a practical and professional setting.
