Personal Statement
For my future, university has always been my ambition. The thought of the independence you
get and how it helps prepare you for the future is a big appeal but also I believe that going
through university is the best possible path for me to get to where I want to be and succeed. I
currently study Creative Media Production at York College. The course covers multiple areas
of the media including film, games and print production. I have been on the course for 3
years and it has been a huge part in guiding my decision towards further study in graphic
design. I love the print side of the media and how people design products based on their
audience but also based on themselves and how they can include small aspects of their views
and life into their work. I also see graphic design as a course where you can throw your
passions and things that really appeal to me personally into my work but also to share it with
people around me and people who may have different views. The course I am doing is a great
preparation for a graphic design course as we get a lot of choice about the way we work. We
then break projects down, starting with initial ideas, research and planning before moving on
to production then evaluation of the work and its process, The freedom and creativity of this
course is something that I believe a graphic design course will offer to me. Doing this course
I have enjoyed the print side of the work as it allows you to be creative in your work but also
implement many angles of the media. I enjoy illustration overall. Making posters and album
covers has been an awesome experience and has given me skills in the conventional aspects
of the work but also got me used to using equipment such as the graphics tablets. In my work
I have tried to test myself and make work that for each project is quite different. This was to
test my own skills and try not to just make work that I enjoy and personally take interest in. I
have made fanzines based around punk music making them by hand in an original sixties
style. I then took on a totally different challenge by rebranding a roofing company. I made all
of that work digitally. For final projects, have made posters and album covers but also a
digital art gallery making a layout of the exhibit, leaflets, posters and examples of work
including moving and still images mixing real life photography with drawings using a
graphics tablet. Studying abroad for a year or getting a chance in an actual work placement is
a big opportunity you can get in university, along with competitions and events that give you
a chance to make contacts for the future with existing companies. Outside of my education I
am quite passionate about music and the influence it has on people and the way they act and
look. I have passion for lots of political and anarcho music where people voice their opinions
and talk of a world full of creativity and freedom. I love drawing in my spare time, as it is
another way to express yourself without having musical ability but also really pushes
creativity and visions you may have in your head which sometimes words aren't enough to
show. I have a strong love for nature and getting out to different places that give you
completely different views on life and culture. I like to see how people all over live and how
some are content with little when others live in a rushed world full of pressures and goals
even though they have so much at their fingertips. Getting the opportunity to study graphic
design at university is something I feel very strongly towards and would love the chance to
test my skills in a more skilled environment and push myself beyond boundaries to show my
views through my work to whom may be interested.
