Theory week 1
Spaced – season 2 Episode 5 – GONE
Context- the show was made in the 90s which can be quite clear from the styles and dated
humour, but also the products involved such as the PlayStation one. However, the show
seems to be aimed at a younger audience from teens to young adults covering topics such
as drugs, partying and relationship problems. Earlier on in the episode the 3 males have a
conversation based on women and the mysterious behind them which is a relatable and
almost funny topic for most males, and then following it with a pretend gun fight to show
the bromance between the three but also how guys can tend to act on there own, which
may suggest they were going for a more male target audience.
The series was made by Simon peg and Nick frost therefore the humour and referencing
involved is almost a bit geeky but also very relatable for lots of people, also the scene which
sort of recaps the night is something that I notice they have used before in the ice cream
trilogy movies, with a quick narrative over small clips or images one after another.
Camera- after watching the episode I noticed the show uses the camera in many different
ways to set the scene but also to make what’s going on much clearer. The first point this is
clear is when the character is on the phone with Sarah and the camera pans left to right on
each character showing who is talking and to make it seemas there in different locations.
Another early on use of the camera is when daisy puts the herb in her pocket it pans in on
this motion foreshadowing what happens later on. The show also uses flashbacks or
imagination scenes and they do this at first when zooming up the people in the back whilst
Tim sits on his game, showing how he was going to spend his entire night sat playing games,
creating quite a long joke in a short clip which is quite well done, and with the flashbacks
making the camera look slightly lighter to show its not in the present.
After the scenes where the characters suggest how to spend the night they flip a coin, as the
coin is in the air the camera is looking down on the people as if you see the coins view then
when it lands in his hand and he slaps it down it quickly cuts in the pub, this shows how the
toss turned out and is a creative way to change the scene working really well.
The scene following this uses many jump cuts every time the order a drink to slowly show
how the effects of the alcohol are changing them and their progress through the night.
The show uses lots of camera panning from character to character when in dialect which is
another thing the two writers do in there movies, but also camera shots such as the scene
where Collin goes missing and as nick frosts character screams it zooms out to show the
entire house, adding to the effect of the scream and show he is worried.
The scene when Tim is in the bathroom talking the camera begins to zoom in on the other
guys face when he starts to show aggression as the music changes, they have done this to
add to the suspense and to show that the other guy is getting annoyed more. They also do a
similar thing when tim meets his old friend and starts to get worried panning from each
character and tims expression changing each frame on him, and how the flashbacks pop up
each time.
